@DestructibleLemon hm? it's repl.it

repl.it does not use that font

user165474
yes it does

user165474
6:05 AM
well maybe you have a different font setting

also I entered the same program
it just shows you don't even care
ok but seriously where is the create a room button

6:06 AM
@isaacg oh apparently I can't make new rooms
I guess because I used emojis in chat one time?
then got annoyed about getting banned?
goddamnit

user165474
what do you want the room to be called

ah forget it

user165474
ok

user165474
also, True,False=False,True

GNU/Linux makes it easier to shoot your foot

What's to be disappointed about?

@betseg Right, but generally you need something like e.g. --no-preserve-root for that to work.

user165474
rm -rf / is bad enough.

user165474
unless you protected / with root in which case you have a whole new set of issues

@HyperNeutrino I removed the g lambda and removed S=g()+g() and the output did not change

6:13 AM
It's only required when the box is skinny enough.

Morning btw

how would I go about getting the ability to make chat rooms again?

If you do l=len you can use l instead of len and save many bytes

Totally agree with ^^^ and ^

C# > Java

Bleh

In every way, except cross-platform compatibility.

@ASCII-only only if > is aliased to <

6:17 AM
I mean Java doesn't even have proper builtin async syntax

@Phoenix well there is mono, so it isn't a big problem

I've just never been writing C# and thought to myself, "I wish I had xxx java feature"

@Phoenix Mono/.NET Core/Unity
@Phoenix Haha because it already has every Java feature

@ASCII-only I mean it's there but I think we can agree it's worse than Java's ability to run on everything including your toaster.

@Phoenix You only need .NET core to run on your toaster
I think

6:19 AM
Give it a year or two, I'd say.

I would actually like to know if I ever get the ability to create rooms again

On the other hand, all the time I write Java code and wish with all my heart I had properties.

user165474
If you have a question, meta.chat.stackexchange.com might be a good place to look ;) honestly though, either ping a mod, an RO, or post on MotherMETA

I can't stop thinking about this xkcd when there is a discussion about an open source and a closed source software.

I don't even know if properties are good code. I just like them.

6:21 AM
@Mego I would like the ability to create rooms again. I don't think it really makes sense to forbid me from making rooms based on why I was banned from chat temporarily

.NET Core and Mono are open source though, aren't they?

@Phoenix Yeah

Well mono has been since 2004 and .net opened source a few months ago (I think), but who uses mono?

@Phoenix But if you want to change compiler things you'd do it directly using a .NET language to modify Roslyn

Anonymous
@DestructibleLemon That's neither something I did nor am capable of doing

6:23 AM
is it possible to reverse?
(also I didn't think you did it)
or am I just going to have to create a sock if I want to create a room

user165474
What does it say when you try, and where does it fail?

Anonymous
I would assume it's a bug

well, the button isn't there anymore, and if I click on the link to create a room it announces I am banned from making rooms

Anonymous
Huh. Maybe a diamond mod did that

Anonymous
6:25 AM
I didn't even know that was possible

@Mego I think it might have just happened from being suspended

Anonymous
Using a sock to evade that ban is grounds for a further ban

@Mego well neither did I
@Mego yeah but the ban already wore off, so it's just annoying now

@DestructibleLemon It's a different ban

then why was I banned from it
ok but I honestly have no idea why I would be banned from creating rooms if it has nothing to do with being banned from chat one time

Anonymous
6:28 AM
It might also be an automatic system thing

You should ask on Mother Meta

A: A guide to moderating chat

Typically, they will be the first line of defense when it comes to inappropriate content or behavior in a room. Users will look to the room owners to guide the room. The room owners...

> A user who has been repeatedly kick-muted will lose the privilege to create chatrooms and will automatically have a moderator flag raised; this should normally serve to inform the moderators of a seriously disruptive person.

oh ffs
I made like a total of 5-7 disruptive messages

CMC: Given a potentially infinite input stream, take input char by char until a palindrome is formed by the input, not counting the initial single char, then exit.

how is that that serious
ok so am I just permanently banned from creating rooms or can I get that privilege back?

This happened a few days ago, not now.

It's baffling how when people have suspensions or restrictions issued, so many of them go "why did you do this Mego?", when I am not capable of imposing those suspensions/restrictions nor am I capable of removing them

It used to be El'Endia Starman.

@DestructibleLemon ROs can only kick users, pin/unpin messages, and move messages. If anything else happens, it's because of automatic system stuff or because a diamond mod did it.

Why do people say "diamond mod"?

I thought they could edit messages too

@Phoenix Nope

@HyperNeutrino There's a diamond next to their name

But isn't "mod" sufficient?

user165474
@Phoenix messages as in comments?

Users with 10k rep are considered to have 'Moderation Tools'

Anonymous
6:40 AM
@HyperNeutrino Because mods have diamonds. It's an easy way to distinguish them from high-rep users who have lesser mod powers

user165474
Ah okay. Makes sense.

@HyperNeutrino Diamond mods can edit chat messages, but the message you replied to was about the diamonds next to the names.

user165474
Also where did El'Endia Starman go? I think I existed on this site before the last time they were active

I have quite a few moderation powers on main (thanks to code golf gold badge and high rep), but none of that translates over to chat

@Riker It's frustrating in two ways. First there's the people getting mad at me when they get suspensions, even though I had no part in issuing the suspensions. Then there's the people that ask me for help with stuff, but I can't help because I'm not a mod, and the best I can do is to point them towards someone with a diamond.

@ASCII-only Those aren't mutually exclusive.

8:06 AM
@Mego (again, I never suspected it was you (though I was somewhat mad). I just thought you would be helpful, because I don't actually know who can help with these things, but I know that now)

@DestructibleLemon That's fair. Chat stuff is not very well documented. Even I was surprised about you not being able to create rooms, and I had to watch the New Room Owner presentation on loop for 24 hours straight while tied to a chair in a remote cabin.

I think that might be a different thing by a third party

@DestructibleLemon What seems to be the issue?

say I want a generator to make a list like this:
[1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4]
what is the not worst way to do this

Anonymous
Do you want it infinite, or bounded?

bounded I guess
but I mean, I could just write the list, I just want to know how to make this work well

Anonymous
So given N, output a generator that yields 1, 1, 2, 2, ..., N, N?

8:40 AM
essentially, but i don't necessarily need input
but I would like to know both

Anonymous
Is this for golf or production?

and also I know I could do something with floored division, but this is not for golf

Anonymous
ok

it's just kind of annoying me that the list comprehensions don't work so great for this apparently

Anonymous
This is probably the most sensible way to do it with a bounded generator

Anonymous
8:42 AM
This is how you'd do it for an infinite generator

hmmm, I kind of wanted a terse list comprehension, but I guess that isn't possible
well, I guess I'm bikeshedding right now or something. it's just so annoying for some reason that there is no easy way to do this

Anonymous
There should be a way to write a generator expression

Anonymous
Let me think for a moment

Anonymous
(x//2 for x in itertools.count(1)) would work for unbounded

Anonymous
For bounded, lambda N:(x//2 for x in range(1,N*2))

8:45 AM
sorta wish python had block comments so I could make more fun things with comments

Python has multiline strings which can work like comments if you don't assign them to anything

Aren't """ block comments?

isn't 1//2 == 0

Anonymous
@KritixiLithos Those are the multiline strings

8:46 AM
@KritixiLithos nope, multiline string

@DestructibleLemon Oops yeah, start at 2

I thought of that solution, its just annoying somehow
that it can't do this simply

Q: Shortest Addition Chain

isaacgAn addition chain is a sequence of integers starting with 1, where every integer other than the initial 1 is a sum of two previous integers. For instance, here's an addition chain: [1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 16, 32, 39, 71] Here are the sums that make it an addition chain: 1 + 1 = 2 1 + 2 = 3 1 + 3 ...

also what is the equivalent of join for lists
will people batter me if I use sum?

Anonymous
sum is not the right answer outside of golf

Anonymous
8:51 AM
In production code, use list1.extend(list2)

Anonymous
Or simply list1 + list2

Anonymous
If they're generators, use itertools.chain

is itertools good practice

Anonymous
Usually. Not reinventing the wheel is good practice.

Anonymous
I can't really think of any situation in production code where you wouldn't want to use itertools (or any other standard module) if it has something that solves the problem.

Q: New code-golf metric : Efficiency*characters

user7185318So, I thought about a new metric of code-golf, the code with the smallest value wins. The value is calculated by characters*time to run. So if you use an programming language like python, it's very short, but for that reason, it's less efficient. This results in a chance for efficient programming...

Chat mini poll: Should I actually make Wolfram Language ToExpression parse Wolfram Language in Charcoal
Also is porting to C++ a bad idea

I'm currently deciding on the items in my botdom koth

11:18 AM
@ASCII-only Fun test case: +;; (I think)
@ASCII-only Actually, it's inversely proportional to the amount of effort you put into it squared.

@feersum Inversely proportional?
@feersum Why does Mathematica even do that

@ASCII-only Did you get something with "Dummy"?

@feersum No, does it work the same on Mathics?

Unlikely.
What did you get?
It's also possible I didn't spell it right.

1 ;; All
Hmm, are Python enums slow? Just profiled my Charcoal and enum method calls take up like 3% of the runtime

11:25 AM
Now I'm going to have to get out Mathematica and check.
Are they Python?
If you need enums in Python, you can use any old object and compare them by reference equality.
Which is probably as fast as you can hope to get.

I don't actually need reference equality, I just need a fast integer constants, preferably in a single class to reduce clutter

hmmm. so far I mostly just picked the warriors items, except with demonic pact instead of dragon spear

Why do they need to be integers?

@feersum not really but if I make them integers I can turn my dictionaries into arrays

for my koth, should the entire thing be a class/object
import random
import bots

deck = (list(range(1, 6)) * 2) + [6, 7, 9]
random.shuffle(deck)
etc. is fine, or should that be in a class
@ASCII-only you know this stuff right?

11:39 AM
Well there's nothing stopping you from putting them in the global namespace
But it's not OOP and bad practice :P

Sometimes what I do is have a "Game" class that's created for each game.

ok, i don't know why you had to split that into two parts

KOTH idea: A procedurally generated star system simulated with n-body physics and with the bots having to get the furthest possible from the center of the map without crashing in something

brb making a class

@ASCII-only In Mathematica, +;; gives System`Private`DummyId ;; All.

11:47 AM
@TuxCopter seems hard
should I declare constants in the class? @ASCII-only

@DestructibleLemon Yeah IMO

should they be in the init?
its just that self.DAGGER seems way more cumbersome than it should be, but at the same time I don't want the overhead of variable assigning constantly

@DestructibleLemon No

also for this koth, I'm having the memory work by having the bot output an item to be given to the function whenever it is its turn

class MyClass(object):
    MyConstant = 9001

11:57 AM
oh right
class MyClass(object):
    MyConstant = 1337
fixed that for you

From the top 20 users, 16 have an even ID
perhaps I should work on that

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

fireflame241Rooting for Trees With the Right Nodes code-golfgraph-theorytree-traversal A rooted tree is an acyclic graph such that there is exactly one path from one node, called the root, to each other node. A node v is called the parent of another node u if and only if the path from the root to u goes th...

@Adnan So the custom list of characters does not count towards your score/bytecount at all?

Nope, but the byte count doesn't matter for the score
since the iteration number is counted towards the score
I'm not sure on this idea though

5:18 PM
@ASCII-only do we want async-single threading for delayed operations (e.g. network request) or multi-threading

@Adnan this probably will encourage cops to post longer solutions

CMC: turn "In Soviet Russia, you don't <verb> a <noun>. " into " Instead, <noun> <verb>s you. "

I think that was a challenge on main

@KritixiLithos Exactly, which is one of the things I'm worried about

the idea is nice, it is just the scoring that needs improvement

5:22 PM
@JanDvorak TeaScript: " Instead, <noun> <verb>s you.

and you said "characters" not "bytes". Was that intentional?

Yeah, I don't think that really matters in this case
since the possible characters that need to be used are already given by the cop

@Downgoat but the interpreter is broken D:

where <verb> and <noun> are any strings matching [a-z]+

@KritixiLithos are you using https

it works now, the last time I checked (many months ago) it didn't work

Carrot, 61 bytes: #^//\S+(?= a |.$)/gS";"^ ^*1//;.+(?=;)/S0-1vInstead, ^^s you.
that is such a monstrosity
I blame it on the fact that Carrot isn't TC yet

You should fix that

I am planning to rewrite the interpreter
and bring node into the game
so that Carrot can hopefully be added on TIO later (my website sucks)
Here's the online interpreter btw: kritixilithos.github.io/Carrot
searching for "In Soviet russia code writes you" lead me to a closed challenge. That lead me to another closed challenge that finally lead me to this. I think I'll try it in Carrot

@KritixiLithos I was able to discard 4 bytes because my website is bad

Q: What happens to a suspended user's bounty?

I like my dogI am currently working on a solution to a question, on which a currently suspended user has offered a bounty before they were suspended. I am close to a solution that would be "competing" for the bounty but if they can't do anything on the site, I can't be awarded the bounty (or anyone else, for ...

Q: You haven't voted on questions in a while

MattThere does not appear to be a dupe for this. I am not sure of the exact calculations that trigger this notification but seeing as some questions get dozens of answers my voting on questions is very skewed. I typically answer things I see on the HNQ. Those post will usually have plenty of answers...

> However I don't think this site is a victim of poor voting culture.

@KritixiLithos Ha!

@Dennis to git this strait. Somebody broke sandbox?

@Christopher Not exactly. While I know what happened, I intend to keep a lit on the details until this is fixed.

@Dennis Ok, I get it. Don't want people going ham on chat.

what happened to the sandbox? It seems fine

It is now.

@MetaEd I tried. Froze three tabs of my browser. Not sure how.

quick question, for anyone who's better with mathematics than I am: how can I convert coordinates (x,y) from a 2D map (like [that one](http://geology.com/world/world-map.gif)) to geographic coordinates (lat,long)? I can get an approximation of the longitude with something like `(x/width_img * 360) - 180` (assuming x is a coordinate in pixel, and the longitude 0 is in the middle of the 2D map) (the closer we are to the poles, the less the formula is accurate if I'm not mistaken).
But I can't figure out a similar formula to get the latitude... any ideas?
I'd expect the formula for the latitude to contain an atan somewhere

it depends on the projection
on local scale, linear interpolation is good enough. You can guesstimate the relative error from the difference between cos(lon_min) and cos(lon_max)

Q: Largest Amount Of Text With Lowest Number Of Bytes

PeteMcGreeteChallenge: Try to print the largest amount of text with lowest number of bytes. Rules: No loops of any kind or repeated function calls of greater than 1. To Win: Lowest amount of bytes! Good Luck.

@TuxCopter I should pick one to be me

Downgoat, you here?
@Dada , are you asking how to convert degrees to/from decimal?

8:44 PM
A bit more complicated since I'm converting 2d coordinates to 3d ones

@Dada Ah, so, you're looking to convert the pixel coordinates on an image to actual coordinates?
