I also know nothing about AD or Windows Server.
Do I need to learn this stuff at the same time? Should I take a course on Windows administration?

Not necessarily

This book is quite old but certainly an option.

And yep, in PowerShell, directory listings are collections of objects - this is what makes it so powerful
No more fiddling around with text parsing

Placing an order.
Learning PowerShell will make learning other Windows admin skills that much easier...
amiright?

Yep!
Well, at least the ones that are designed to be managed with PS, which is rather a lot
Might have to drop back to running EXE utilities once in a while

12:10 AM
Speaking of which... I should learn a bit of Bash as well.

@bwDraco The O'Reilly books are all good, whatever the topic.

@DavidPostill Agreed. I have O'Reilly books for JS.

Once you learn PS, Bash will horrify you ;)

lol
Order placed.

:D

12:19 AM
Sucks that the bot is down...
I'll probably have PowerShell ISE open on this system soon...

Q: What was the command that printed out fun facts about the date in linux?

MrWmThere was a command that you can run and it would print out fun facts about the current date and a couple dates ahead, but I do not remember it. All I know is that it has something to do with history.

I'd like to get alternate opinions on this question!

Seems suspiciously like a software rec to me

I would agree. Although I have seen questions that appear to be software recs that aren't closed.

...and the great thing is, there's a mod behind me in this chatroom as I learn PowerShell \o/
There's nothing quite like having a live expert :P

;)

@JourneymanGeek I'd not call it software rec. OP is asking for the bash command that does it. If there isn't one, and it's a separate program, that's not his fault, he thinks it's a simple in-built command.

12:28 AM
Yeah, but I didn't close it for that, I closed it as a guessing game (aka unclear what you're asking)

I don't know what, if anything, it is, but if it does exist it's probably something akin to fortune

Jeff Atwood on February 29, 2012

We’ve observed a particular pattern of questions emerging on several Stack Exchange sites.

All these questions are effectively guessing games.

I remember myself playing this a bit childish, but in some ways awesome game, where you control a tank, and can pick up and stack turrets (and maybe something else) from enemy tanks you kill. Maybe they also had different platforms (and if it’s one with wheels then technically it’s not a tank, but hey). It was around 2000 (or maybe even earlier) and the game had 3D graphics. …

I miss having Jeff around :(

@JourneymanGeek old news but good to see Engadget publicizing it -- wish they'd publicized it way back when Louis Rossmann and Jessa Jones went to Nebraska to lobby and testify in favor of Senator Brausch's bill, though. Waiting until AFTER they shoot it down isn't so good.

@allquixotic it isn't just about Nebraska tho

1:14 AM
I'm hoping to start the day earlier, now that I no longer have any late-night jobs or classes. Good night.

@bwDraco was more because it was in my bag, I think. and of course the modem contributes a lot of heat

> First off – and there's no getting around this one, I'm afraid – you have to get up early. Really early: 6am is good, but 5am is better. And CEOs don't hit snooze: most of them claim to leap out of bed in the morning (even though it's basically still night) and more than one said that "life is too exciting" for sleep.
The alarm is set for 5:45 am tomorrow morning.
Can't stay here much longer. Good night.
(woke up at 12:30 pm today, so not sure if my body will like it)
I'll see how meal times can be adjusted to accommodate earlier bedtimes.
Even though I have no business reasons to wake up that early, it's a good habit. Being a night owl isn't the best idea.

@BenN the powershell admin modules get ridiculously verbose :(

Bob
@allquixotic I hate underscores the most. Hypens are a close second.
Pain in the arse to type.
camel/PascalCase are much more natural
@allquixotic But it's not like modern nix is that much better
lxc config device set vm1 eth0 ipv4.address=foo
lxc config device add vm1 eth1 nic nictype=bridged parent=lxdbr0 ipv4.address=10.0.105.2
generally, when there's more than 3-4 parts/params to a single command is when I start wanting a GUI
or even editing text conf files is better than extra-wordy commands

@Bob I usually use lxc config edit for that
the native format isn't complicated and easier than commands

Bob
3:25 AM
true enough

@Bob heh. I think those feel more natural

Can anyone try installing the ClickOnce version of WinAuth and see if they get either a certificate prompt/installation unsuccessfully message or if they have success?

Bob
@Ramhound WinAuth?

Its google authenticator but on pc

interesting

Bob
@Ramhound gimme a min (booting VM)
also, s/google authenticator/TOTP/
:P

yes; I use it for my Team Viewer and LastPass authenticator backup
But the portable version doesn't install so it doesn't appear the same way in the start menu

Bob
4:04 AM
@Ramhound "No certificate available"
"No certificates meet the application criteria."
Though that could be because I'm domain-joined... hm.

Alrifht so it's the server not my pc :-)
no; it's a 404 error

Bob
ah

ClickOnce apps have to be signed, so no certificate means, it's a server end issue
Thanks for checking I will just add the portable version to the start menu

Bob
@Ramhound 403 apparently :P

403 that's what I meant, was getting the same, and the ClickOnce development docs indicated that's a server problem
Access Denied error

Bob
4:10 AM
ah

1 hour later…
5:15 AM
is there anyone know how to do text or file processing from cmd on windows without using any external tools?

5:41 AM
@AvinashRaj You need to clarify your question. What's an "external tool" compared to an internal one? Is an external tool, a process other than literally cmd.exe? A tool that's not built into the base Windows image (for what version(s)?)?
depending on the targeted Windows versions and whether you have (or can distribute, or count on there existing) certain updates such as newer releases of PowerShell and .NET, you could go from cmd.exe in a batch script, to compiling and running C# via PowerShell and basically do anything the user has permission to do

@AvinashRaj Use PowerShell

@Ramhound spam actually
I kinda know what's going on and its slightly lulzy

that the stupid 3 license pack?\

I mean I'm happy to try and help users, but jeez
@Ramhound normally you come accross pretty blunt, I'd expect you to have voted to close by now!

I did

I received Windows 10 1703 today. But during setup, Windows Update installed an update for my Windows 10 1607 as well. Gave me shock. I thought I'm gonna end up with Windows Mush.

@FleetCommand Yes; They renamed it on Windows 8.1. But Windows 10 UWP do not run on Windows 8.1; You can recompile 8.1 UWP to work on Windows 10 though with little effort

user226528
@Ramhound I fully agree with this revision.

user226528
Weren't we supposed to be able to mark Ethernet connections as metered connections in Windows 10 1703? I can't.

I am not entirely sure what changed in my comment though
The question was about Windows 10 UWP not 8.1 Universal applications

user226528
The question explicitly asks "What prevents unsigned UWP apps from running on Windows 8 and 10?"

Just wondering how he managed to draw Mona Lisa in old MS Paint?

Bob
with a steady hand

user226528
With a pen or tablet

I am sure he didn't do it with mouse but rather used drawing electronic equipment like Bamboo pad and pen?
@FleetCommand Tablet?

user226528
@Boris_yo Yes. A digitizing tablet, not a tablet computer.

user226528
I am talking about Wacom, not iPad.

Bob
8:21 AM
@FleetCommand I can.

I tried creating signature on iPAD with pen that has that silicone in its end. Didn't turn out well...
@FleetCommand Ever tried it?

user226528
@Boris_yo A Wacom tablet? Once. I was more than clumsy with it but the artist that exhibited it drew me.

Bob
Toggle to "On" works fine.

user226528
@Bob Greyed out.

Bob
8:25 AM
@FleetCommand ...odd. Group policy?

@FleetCommand It must be making drawing in old MS Paint way easier than with mouse.

user226528
@Bob Not in a domain.

Bob
@FleetCommand Logged in as an admin user?

MS Paint + Mouse = guaranteed Carpal Tunnel

user226528
@Bob No. Let me try that. I must have gotten used to UAC's magic...

Bob
8:27 AM
@FleetCommand Ah. There's a couple forum posts from 2015 (so probably about wireless) saying it's greyed out for standard users.

user226528
Good call, Bob. You were right on the money.

Bob
@Boris_yo Not necessarily. Most people just have extremely high sensitivity mouse setups.
If you turn your mouse sensitivity down, you can make these precise movements with large sweeping arm motions rather than tiny wrist motions.

@Bob But how is it comfortable at all to lift arm to move mouse rather than palm?

Bob
@Boris_yo It's not particularly uncomfortable. And you just clear more space for the mouse. Nice large mousepad if you like pads.
Or you use a mouse with a toggle button so you can slow it down for precise work and speed it back up for moving to another area.

@Bob For me, mice with trackball are the best though. With my Logitech M570 I haven't looked back ever, despite weekly need of cleaning maintenance.

8:50 AM
yup
I do this

@JourneymanGeek Do wat?

Run my mouse at ludicrously high sensitivity, and have a button for precision use

user226528
Captain Planet? Seriously...

user226528
If I didn't know and had to guess, I'd say this is a video frame from M.A.S.K.

I didn't know lyrics when I was a kid, let alone English was like a new world to me. I still watched episodes despite not understanding them.
The graphics, effects etc. were way ahead of Russian cartoons.

user226528
9:54 AM
Wait! Russians have cartoons?

user226528
Hmm... I've always loved anime but it seems Japanese aren't aware that something called "Story" is ever invented.

user226528
And then there were three Japanese anime that Americans imported, censored, dubbed a whole new story on them and rebranded them.

user226528
Robotech...

Bob
o.o

9:58 AM
@FleetCommand You've obviously never watched japanese adult content.

user226528
@Nick I have studied Japanese law. They can't produce that kind of contents legally.

user226528
So, no, I haven't watched nonexistent stuff.

6:00 sharp.

user226528
Wow. Greetings have really gone downhill here.

@FleetCommand Ah, you see, it's not that kind of content as long as you blur it out! ...apparently.

I never thought there is such thing as different kinds of sh**, but please do proceed.

user226528
And please not about the literal kinds of the literal s***.

Bob
Japanese indecency law is ... odd.

user226528
10:04 AM
You don't have to tell me twice. I read it. What about it now?

user226528
I wish there was one of those "user [such-and-such] is typing..." notices in this chatroom.

Bob
@FleetCommand Who did you think was typing?

user226528
Floof

Bob
:S

@FleetCommand All of their cartoons lack story?

user226528
10:10 AM
@Bob Are you saying that Japanese produce **** but blur out what makes it ****y?

Bob
@FleetCommand Apparently. Not entirely sure what side of legal it sits on, and Article 175 is ridiculously vague, but there's certainly a lot of it so one can assume they're not prosecuted for it.

user226528
@Bob So, they have some quality alone time with a video whose entire length is a mosaic screen?

user226528
Assuming that the title and credit roll aren't so.

user226528
Or maybe they are just not Japan-made anime...

Bob
@FleetCommand I suppose that would depend on the specific parts that are considered such.
(vague responses ftw)

user226528
10:14 AM
@Boris_yo Most of them. You watch whole season and at the end, you ask yourself: "What the hell I was watching?"

Bob
ok now you actually have me curious

user226528
@Boris_yo I can put it this way: If you watch a season of an anime, and then someone put a gun to your head and says "summarize it for me or I'll shoot", you'd better have your last will and testament prepared.

user226528
Because I will never bet on you being able to summarize it.

10:49 AM
@FleetCommand Maybe they tell story as cartoon goes? I guess not...

._.
this is wierd s***

I watched a cartoon about Nagasaki bombing... Don't recall the title but I think it was Japanese. There was a story.

Yanno, I wander off and you guys discuss H****** and worse. Captain Planet

user226528
@Boris_yo There certainly are exceptions, and respectable exceptions too.

Any proper 80s kid would hate it.

user226528
10:51 AM
@Boris_yo For example, Studio Ghibli makes anime with good story.

@JourneymanGeek You don't like the cartoon?

... heck no.
It was excessively preachy and had a terribly earwormy theme song

user226528
But 19 million episodes of anime are made in Japan each year.

@JourneymanGeek I must have awakened wrath in you...

Now, Batman TAS...
That's awesome

user226528
10:52 AM
99% of those 19 million don't have a story.

Or animaniacs. Which gets better when you actually are old enough to get the innunendo

@JourneymanGeek I hated them. I liked nurse though...

lol. I knew there was a reason you were strange....

@JourneymanGeek Batman Begins. Nice?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 80s? reruns pls :P

10:53 AM
How can ANYONE hate animaniacs

TAS means soemthing different to me

@Bob technically early 90s

@JourneymanGeek Dr. Strange that is.

i never really liked animaniacs as a kid

Batman the animated series.
....

10:53 AM
:O

Bob
@JourneymanGeek This has been sitting on my watch later list for half a year

@JourneymanGeek Tool assisted speedrun ;)

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

@djsmiley2k So you are Dr. Strange too?

@Boris_yo What is Dr. Strange?

10:54 AM
How can you people not like animaniacs?

@JourneymanGeek I may rewatch them some day to try to like them.

user226528
@JourneymanGeek The same way they don't like Microsoft.

I can get a dislike of tiny toons.
I mean, it was derivative and almost too cutsy
but animaniacs, man...

I don't dislike microsoft.

Ren & Stimpy anyone?

10:55 AM
Never cared for the art style

@JourneymanGeek Oh yeah. You like your CGI in the morning...

I just created a botnet script which fetches commands from a server and runs them and is only 533KB in size

On the contrary, I either prefer a simplified realist style or actually visually pleasing artwork
I grew up on warner brother's cartoons...

Bob
"only"

user226528
I grew up on Tom & Jerry but whatever.

10:57 AM
@Bob Small enough. Unpacks busybox.exe for addition functionality.

Tom and Jerry is fine.

@FleetCommand Tom and Jerry is AWESOME!
Apr 2 at 6:59, by Rahul2001
I just downloaded all the classic Tom and Jerry episodes :P

Bob
Tom and Jerry got weird under Chuck Jones

user226528
@Rahul2001 I seem to have the same opinion once. I used to find it extremely hilarious.

@FleetCommand It has a long mileage to it. I could watch same episodes and never get enough.
Some movies have a long mileage too. Like Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan etc. ... I can rewatch them again and again.
