@Bob I was a little confused by what lactose-free actually means. I think they add an enzyme into the milk that helps you digest lactose, but it still kinda has to contain lactose
it would take some special chemical processing to remove all of the lactose (basically, a slight molecular derivative of sucrose, sugar) from the milk
as I understand it, the enzyme they put into the milk (1) passes through you with little effect if your body already produces the enzyme by itself; or (2) helps you digest and absorb the sugars contained within the lactose if your body does not produce that enzyme
hence, "lactose-intolerant" just means that your body produces a small enough amount of the enzyme, or none at all, that the lactose ends up going past the stage of your digestive system where you siphon off sugars into the bloodstream, instead letting the bacteria in your gut feast on all that sugar
which creates ... unpleasant after-effects

i thought they put it in a centrifuge and somehow spun the lactose out of the milk
i was wrong @allquixotic was right
they put something in the milk to bind with the lactose
nn all

I think the cows are different....
Ah no

Bob
1:12 AM
@allquixotic Yea, they add lactase which converts the lactose into a different sugar.
@allquixotic Yup, exactly. It's not an allergy - I can eat/drink lactose. It just means I'm ... uncomfortable ... for a few hours after.
I usually take lactase pills before having anything with significant amounts of lactose.
Lactose-free just means they add the lactase earlier, directly to the milk. Which tends to be more effective. Lactase doesn't really like stomach acid.
btw, @allquixotic, in case you didn't see yesterday. those virtio drivers aren't GPL (or at least the RH copy isn't). I've deleted them and asked geek to delete your message, but you might want to remove it from your gdrive. I'm just using the Fedora ones (the hard way) now :\ (idk if you read pings now)
side note, I checked and yea they are on AWS (if you activate the supplementary repo) but licence conditions include not using them on non-RH OSes. bleh.

1:36 AM
Wannakey: in-memory key recovery for Windows XP
> TFW your OS has so many security holes people use holes to fix problems caused by holes.

lol
@Bob deleted. edited and purged.

Bob
2:08 AM
uhm.

2:24 AM
@Bob how many "creators" dedicate their machines to running IIS or SQL Server :P
"Yes, I have a Quad Xeon E7 3U box with 6 x 10 TB HDD with a Dell PERC Hardware-RAID controller and 1 TB of RAM; I'd like to get better tablet support in MS Paint."
btw @Bob, I got the LG G6 :P I turned in my S8+ and went with a new AT&T account (while still keeping all my Verizon cruft including the iPhone) for use at work, because we're literally underneath a Verizon cell tower's signal but I think we're good with AT&T
and we're even better with AT&T at the customer facility because they run AT&T femtocells... they force their employees toward a monopoly... walls are so thick, no other signals get out or in.

Bob
@allquixotic o.O
Any particular reason to go LG insteead of Samsung?
I used to have a G4 but replaced it with a S7... LG is notorious for their bootloops
G4, V10, G5, V20, Nexus 5X... all bootlooping

@Bob because I had an S8+ and it was a little too awesome? because I wanted to save $11/month? because I don't mind a previous-gen Snapdragon in exchange for a more vanilla Android experience?
also, what kind of stupid company puts a dedicated button on a phone, sells it and the button doesn't even do anything? (the Bixby button)
if that's not a rushed product, I don't know what is.
I want a finished device, not an "oops we fucked up the Note 7 so we're gonna rush out a new flashy phone for the PR".

Bob
2:42 AM
o.o
@allquixotic I was waiting for a note8/S9 but the S8 was tempting :P
@allquixotic was kinda curious if there's something you specifically don't like about it
i.e. reasons for me to stay away

@Bob Cost? :P
and the UI a little bit though can't really put my finger on it

Bob
@allquixotic hm. I find I actually like a few things from touchwiz now. LGUI is alright. stock android is ... not good.

3:16 AM
0_0
I like stock android...
tho I've grown remarkably fond of oxygen on my OP3

I don't know any (good) carriers in the US that offer OnePlus devices

@allquixotic OPs are sold direct in the US

some MVNOs here and there with inferior data plans and bloated prices
@JourneymanGeek yeah but you can't activate them on most big carriers

and least for me, I'm not locked into a carrier
@allquixotic erf

it's not that we're locked in; it's that we're locked out

3:19 AM
America is strange ;p
2
@allquixotic the lock out is a lock in. ;p

if you buy a retail device at a Big Four (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mo, Sprint) retail store or online, you can get it carrier unlocked for free and port it to another carrier that supports at least some bands in common with the LTE baseband
so you can't be locked in
but if you have a device that's not on their list, you can't get in to another carrier
in practice, with a couple "you can't move devices from carrier X to carrier Y" specific scenarios due to band compatibility, most other carriers' devices are on the portability list to and from eachother
and I think Verizon and AT&T even sell the same literal model number of Galaxy S8 now

@allquixotic band 8 is the only 'unique to one carrier' band here
(also, the india/europe model OPs support ALL THE BANDS)

@JourneymanGeek we have GSM/CDMA (becoming irrelevant, but still required for device activation I think, so it's not totally gone yet), and Verizon is the only one with band 4, I think... and then AT&T probably has one or two bands to themselves

GSM by design is "slip in a sim card"

T-Mo and Sprint have various degrees of "semi-MVNO"-ness where they piggyback off of Verizon towers, but they also run their own towers

3:22 AM
CDMA may be.
2 carriers here share
Singtel is basically our Ma Bell

there are so-called world phones that support CDMA and GSM depending on what network your SIM card tells you to connect to; those will support 2G/3G on, say, GSM AT&T and CDMA Verizon

4th carrier is... er where?

but they may not have 100% of the bands

oh. No 2g here

AT&T deleted their 2G network but there's still GSM somehow o_O

3:24 AM
could be on 3 and 4g

they're using their 2G bands (ex-) for LTE now, obviously
Verizon probably will follow suit.

yup, that's the goal here

@allquixotic does that mean 2g phones will stop working like the original iphone eventualy

@allquixotic ...T-Mobile has band 4, too. It's their primary LTE band.

3:33 AM
@William you can still boot up, use apps and WiFi on the original iPhone, but since the original iPhone was 2G and AT&T only, you can no longer get cellular data with it.
not sure if you can make phone calls either, for that matter

wouldn't this be an issue with emergency 911 calls not working
also you could probably unlock it and get it on Tmobile if Tmobile still sends 2G
I'm surprised they can just cancel something like that. Heck Mosiac(which I was testing out the other day) even works with the new domains names which I was suprised. Talk about backwards compatibility

its different tho
You can't send telegrams either
and dropping 2g is basically a multi year effort

@William the original iPhone is 10 years old. It's unrealistic to be able to operate a phone that long. Different pieces of technology have different realistic life expectancies.

they've basically been telling us "We're dropping 2g on april 1st 2017", for two years

Toasters usually last 10 - 20 years. Central A/C units, 20 to 30 years. Houses (built with good standards), 100 plus years. Desktop computers can still be usable after 10 years, some even longer, but that doesn't mean all electronics can last that long.

Trying to use an original iPhone today is equivalent to complaining that you can't find any leaded gas for your car that requires lead in the gas so the engine doesn't tear itself apart.

Someone in my college class today was using a Dell computer from 2006 that was running W10
But I guess its different

So bascically ThinkPad X60 era... yeah, I could see that being a real stretch, but for basic tasks like web and email, an X60 with 2 GB of RAM and a Core 2 Duo is still probably okay.
Of course, the display will be horrid compared to modern ones, the battery's probably shot, the hinge might be wonky, and it's got enough dust inside of it probably to create an entire cat out of all the dust mites and furballs.

@allquixotic You wouldn't be able to. I tried putting my old phone (Nexus 5X) on 2G only mode when AT&T shut down 2G and could not get any service at all. I could not even make a voice call.

Yes that is correct as all and Journey said

3:43 AM
@bwDraco well now I'm a fellow AT&T'er (and also a Verizon'er) :P

I'm now on T-Mobile, using a OnePlus 3T with LineageOS. Their coverage is a bit uneven, but where you can get a good signal, their LTE is extremely fast (on essentially the same level as Verizon, and sometimes even faster).

Oh that makes sense
also it was a dell businesss laptop which are built well at least the hinges close to a thinkpad they even have a terrible version of the track point

@allquixotic if its a thinkpad of the era... the hinges should be fine

although it is different bands from what I understand it appears Verizons plans to phase out there 3g by 2021 androidauthority.com/…

3:59 AM
T-Mobile still has 2G service for M2M devices but is gradually shutting down 3G UMTS. 2G will remain available until 2020.

5:04 AM
wtf, XKCD didn't onebox
also that's a hilarious xkcd
@JourneymanGeek how are you doing? :)

haz job. Not loving it ;p

@JourneymanGeek Can you imagine the food bill for that fella?

@JourneymanGeek what's funny is that it looks like it was just resized.
@GypsySpellweaver nah, he eats the long rats in the basement.

Says his morning meal is kibble. Then 'roo meat later. I'm gonna guess the 'roo meat's free for the shooting, but the kibble's got to come from somewhere that want's to get paid for it.
@satibel That's a cute lil fella.

@GypsySpellweaver we've got those in the ponds around my mother's home.

6:14 AM
Somehow I think my cats would play with them, not eat them.
@satibel I think I like the idea, but I also think it's less cost effective than $20/35# in-store in my case. Electric for the oven would add up fast.

my mother had a cat, the only thing he ever caught, was a worm, but he seemed very proud.
@GypsySpellweaver how costly is electricity where you live?

my cat once brought us a BAT
also had squirrel, bird (alive and dead), mice (alive a dead) and once a huge dead rat

@djsmiley2k Cat, vampire slayer.

The weirdest one may of been the live peigion that he managed to get throug hthe catflap some how
@Burgi didn't hear it, just walked past the window and everything i very very wet again
gaaaaaaaaaah
car died again twice on the way in
I'm tempted to say it's happening more often, but I'm not even sure of tht.

@satibel .09 USD/Kwh

6:22 AM
@GypsySpellweaver well, that's like 2$ for 2 hours of oven, not that expensive.

@satibel Instrutions called for 3 hours/batch, from the photo, looks like enough that it'd take at least 2 rounds to do it all in the oven I have, maybe 3. that's hrs ~ $6 in elec alone. Soy flour's not cheap, though I've not priced it lately. The rest probably don't cost too much, but over all it still adds up.
In-store price for our food is ~$2.30/lb
Plus the 80¢ for the bus trip to get it.

you can often get fish and chicken heads for free.

place trays ina dehydrator
is that something people have?

I have

@djsmiley2k When I lived in the country, many moons ago, I had a nice one. Now I don't :(
luhaR olleH

6:34 AM
@GypsySpellweaver that's because I just use % instead of px and viewport to make the website look decent everywhere.
Don't see the point of separate CSS files if one can do it all

I was hoping that was all you did.
Did you see the one responsive element I added at the end?

@GypsySpellweaver Nope, didn't notice, I'll check now...

can anyone fix my car?

@djsmiley2k Yes. Just not me.

 The Pitstop

For the motormouth in you! (mechanics.stackexchange.com)

@Rahul2001 With the current setup 30% of the width is dead space, and I get about 6 words/line.

Okay wow. Girlfriend just texted me. She's had this brilliant idea of us just "forgetting about each other" for the next 1.5 months and not making any contact so that we can concentrate on studies. I guess she kinda has a point, but this is overly drastic and I don't like it.
@GypsySpellweaver ohh.

@Rahul2001 I wouldn't like it either :(
Did you get the email from your site? Explained it more there.
Visual sample of the moded version can be had at growleybearcreations.us/gossip/chat.html

@GypsySpellweaver I'll check it out

@Rahul2001 lol
yeah that's a bit drastic
I coached my gf through her A-levels,
andhelped her re-write her dissertation at uni

6:49 AM
Her next message was "Don't text or call"

The worst part is that we have vacations right now, and I happen to know that after this we won't be able to talk much for two years (till we graduate from school) anyway because the pressure from school to study will be too great.

so my arqade question made HNQ xD

Q: Do the market place / fishing guy / photo guy / dog tag quests in FFXV ever end?

djsmiley2kDo the market place / fishing guy / photo guy / dog tag quests in FFXV ever end? As in, if I keep going back, will they just continue to generate and give me quests? I like being a completionist, and sometimes this kind of thing can trip me up and leave me spending hours chasing a end I can neve...

It's getting very late here. Good night.

6:54 AM
@bwDraco it's 9 am here XD.

thanks @bwDraco:D
it's a terrible question

Done got late here, I think.

Q: Please add support for the <samp> tag

SklivvzFrom MDN, <samp> The HTML <samp> element is an element intended to identify sample output from a computer program. It is usually displayed in the browser's default monotype font (such as Lucida Console). This is of course very useful on all the "code" sites, but particularly also in doc...

this seems potentially handy

@JourneymanGeek seems to me that the backtick or code indent have been working quite well for that purpose on several sites.

@GypsySpellweaver for individual lines
but it seems like a nice idea to seperate "code" from console output
"This is what I wrote" vs "This is what I ran, and what I got"

7:05 AM
As he suggests, giving it console type background implies it's only a CLI use, while it's potential includes all the error boxes that GUI's like to pop up with as well.
Though I do recall having used code in block quote to show me vs computer

tho for the latter, screenshots work well?

Screen shots of text almost always get a comment "convert that to text please" and half the time the please is forgotten.

yup
naw, I was thinking screenshots of error windows

I'd prefer the text on 75% of them too. Only a few such boxes really provide information beyond "that don't work" :)
And, in the recent clean up all those were lost too, making the questions WTF?
The imgur connection should stop that, but who knows.

Bob
> Now since no exchange currently allows a way around the charge back issues of buying Bitcoins with Paypal we are going to have to go through VirWox – The Virtual World Exchange. We will use a virtual currency called SLL (Second Life Linden Dollars), This currency is used for one of the biggest virtual worlds today – Second Life.
O_O

7:19 AM
rofl
clever
I wonder if they expect to make money via the exchange rates changing tho
Sooooooooooo how long for a tag deletion again?

Maybe like 2 days?

hmmmmmmm
it just won't... delete...

@djsmiley2k I think it is deleted. see this
1
A: Deletion of several tags

SathyaWe can't delete tags, they are auto deleted by the system every now and then. Also, you can point to a random tag, system will show the standard tag page, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they exist.. (ex: data-explorer doesn't exist, neither does scraping or interesting-tags)

7:36 AM
@GypsySpellweaver ah, ok ty
success!
/me moves onto another tag

Me thinks I spend too much time reading trivia. I shouldn't know that yet.

morning

lol
its useful trivia

well shit is going to hit the fan today...

does it not, everyday?

7:43 AM
yeah but more so today

wooo
Did you bring down the NHS?
3 letter agency
:O

Wear goggles and a poncho

it's hit it every day at work for the last few
been fun
/me isn't involved.

our customer has an EV SSL and it expired yesterday. its taking FOREVER for the additional validation to be.... well validated
@GypsySpellweaver and a shower cap

Slap in a cert from Let's Encrypt for a short time. Not EV, but keeps the error messages away.
Free too.

7:46 AM
i can't, its shared hosting

They have cPanel?

a trimmed down version
the hosting company has to install the SSL

Does it allow control over the certs at all? Even on GoDaddy I could manually install certs.

@Rahul2001 well, this happened to me, twice. Now they are just friends. Not to be a salty old geezer but this probably will end your relationship, though you could maybe get back together when you finish your studies. Don't worry, statistically, relationships at 16 years old don't last long anyways.

@GypsySpellweaver no, none at all

7:49 AM
sucks!

they aren't our prefered supplier

@satibel :/

Bob
hm. this bitcoin thing :P

@Burgi If you provide the cert will the host install it for you?

yes but at a silly cost

7:51 AM
Sounds like an crocodile host to me.

yes
yes they are
they are truly awful

Maybe this is your chance to recommend switching hosts. And have evidence to support your claim. :D

Bob
hm
I'm trying to figure out this bitcoin business :D

@Burgi lul
@Bob what's to figure out?

@Burgi Nothing wrong with being a hatch-ling if you don't mind living in an eggshell.

7:55 AM
they are totally unsuitable for our clients needs but the customer won't pay to migrate the site to a better server

For some reason my mouse cursor and audio recording device are disbaled on startup. Any ideas on why that could be?
@Burgi You have servers? How much?

have you tried rebooting?

Bob
@djsmiley2k all the things
I don't know what I need to know :D

@Nick in terms of cost?

7:56 AM
@Burgi Yup, every time, the mouse cursor disappears and the I have to re-enable the microphone via troubleshooting.

we pay about £100/mth for a fully managed service

Is the expired EV in that fully managed service. :/

@Burgi gah! That's a lot. I can get a server for INR100/month on HostGator. And I'm too broke for that too.

@GypsySpellweaver different hosting company

Bob
> And in the name of all that's routable, please stop using address classes.

7:59 AM
@Bob to turn your bitcoins to cash?

@djsmiley2k It's better to turn farts into gold coins.
