2:00 PM
Welp just passed 22 minutes and I'm still not done ;_;

Well, why am I posting a new question when it wouldn't give me any reps?

would having a challenge for Champernowne's constant be a good idea?

@ConorO'Brien it would, but it also would be a duplicate

that's not an exact dupe
I'm talking about producing the constant, but I'm sure the method used is the same in both challenges

what do you mean by producing the constant?

2:04 PM
e.g. given n, produce first n digits

convince me that it isn't a dupe

it probably is
I originally wanted to do a challenge for C_k, but it's a superset of this challenge

4
Q: Produce the most digits of an irrational number with only 64 KB of memory

hildredConstraints: Calculate any notable irrational number such as pi, e, or sqrt(2) to as many decimal digits as possible. If using a number not mentioned in the list above, you must cite how and where this number is used. The memory used to store data in variables that the program reads from at any...

This challenge is bad.
@ConorO'Brien brownie points if you know why.
I'm referring to the maths behind.
@ConorO'Brien actually, I would 11 it as a duplicate of this challenge of yours

"fractional part of pi"?

@ConorO'Brien no, not about pi
not about any specific number. just the challenge itself.

2:09 PM
perhaps sometihng in "Calculate any notable irrational number ... to as many decimal digits as possible."

@ConorO'Brien hint: why can't I just output 1 until it consumes all the memory?

@JanDvorak Try it online!

@HyperNeutrino you ready? I'm going to write it in 20 minutes starting now. You can time me :)
that said, your spec is missing one detail: Out of all of the games, how do you decide the winner?

user165474
Heh It's been half an hour and I haven't finished yet lol. Actually I have but I can't test it because mini version changes :(

@NathanMerrill last man standing?

user165474
2:11 PM
Oh right. Full round robin and the person with the most wins wins (hopefully this won't ever be a tie...?)

its a bunch of 1v1 games
ok

user165474
wtf Ok does anyone here know how to upgrade java? It's saying Controller has been compiled by a more recent version of the Java Runtime (class file version 53.0), this version of the Java Runtime only recognizes class file versions up to 52.0 when I try to run it which is really annoying because every time I upgrade it goes to Java 9 and then I need to downgrade again

You should be able to have both installed and just switch versions
I've got 5-8 installed on mine right now

user165474
Eh My java version is 1.8.0_121 but the newest is 1.8.0_131

probably compiling with the latest JDK, but your PATH is set to an older JRE or something

user165474
2:17 PM
Yeah. I think I fixed it.

user165474
eh crap now it can't find the main class

user165474
even though it works from eclipse

@HyperNeutrino what are k and J?
and how do they get defined?

user165474
k and j are the max number of snowballs and the max number of ducks. They are given as part of the arguments list.

right, but how do you define them at runtime
also, you don't pass the max number of ducks

2:27 PM
the number of ducks remaining begins at the max

oh, true

user165474
Eh everything is broken

Q: Add up two algebraic numbers

Leaky NunDefinitions An algebraic number is a number that is a zero of a non-zero polynomial with integer coefficients. For example, the square root of 2 is algebraic, because it is a zero of x^2 - 2. The corresponding polynomial is called the minimal polynomial of the algebraic number, provided that th...

user165474
Oh wait I'm dumb

user165474
this is a lot simpler than I thought

user165474
2:32 PM
Yay I finished it

hmm
statistically speaking, if you have more snowballs left than the enemy has snowballs + ducks, you're guaranteed to win if you throw every turn

user165474
I've added a link to the source code of my controller.

bah, I just finished mine as well
and am just finishing up the multi-lang stuf
@HyperNeutrino you never answered me, though. How do you decide what j and k are?

user165474
@NathanMerrill Well theoretically your program should be able to handle me giving it arbitrary values at the beginning of execution but I usually default to 10 snowballs and 5 ducks.

user165474
CMC: Make a program that will watch a question and automatically upvote any answer to it.

user165474
2:41 PM
(please don't actually)

@HyperNeutrino yes but for your challenge to be clear, you need to define it
because it can make a big difference

user165474
Okay. I guess I'll say 50 snowballs 25 ducks as the judging standard.

user165474
Most of the answers are in Python and then there's that one Scala answer :D

    $ Hel

user165474

2:51 PM
@HyperNeutrino CMC (don't) write a program which will find its submission on ppcg and upvote that. ?

CMC: write a question that is valid on codegolf and another site.

@HyperNeutrino mine is done if you want to check it out. Unfortuantely, you won't be able to use mine (Because mine keeps submissions alive, as opposed to booting them up every time you call a function)
I do it that way, because it is really slow to boot submissions every time you call a function

@ConorO'Brien too broad. What other sites are we talking about?

@JanDvorak that seems to be the goal of the challenge
find the other SE that can polyglot

user165474
@NathanMerrill Yay cool! Nice :)

Tips post idea: Tips for golfing in brainfuck derivatives

Been out of the loop the past few days. Sorry if someone posted this already. malwaretech.com/2017/05/…

It seems to broad but a brain-flak tips post looks like to narrow

@Christopher Dupe of tips for golfing in BF

3:15 PM
@LuisMendo what should be the last testcase?

@Christopher BrainFlak is not a Brainfuck derivative

I wanted to find a cool esoteric language to make a proper bot for @HyperNeutrino 's challenge, , but I can't find one that interests me

@TuxCopter Ok

Would it be possible to make a TNB bot called TIO, so you could enter @tio j echo 2+2?

@LeakyNun Are you always here in The Nineteenth Byte?

3:18 PM
maybe

@Adám ooh, that'd be cool

@Adám Ping Dennis. Or ping in TIO room

@Adám Yeah, that sounds cool.

Anonymous
@Adám About a year ago, I helped write a bot called DataBot that could do similar things

Anonymous
It wouldn't take much work to get it running again - would just have to modify it to work with the new TIO API

3:20 PM
@Mego The only real problem would be specifying what goes in each field.

Anonymous
@Adám Yeah, TIO has gotten a lot more complex than when DataBot was first written

Q: How you do Code golf?

Hasindu LankaHow are you Really making those goals from a Text which never could be read by a human? Code golfers are making amazing things from some charter like {⍵≠⊃⊃≠/∘.∨/¨⍺=⊂⍳¨⍴⍵} or qN/W%(~{1$::!\{1a\Te[f.|z}/..^}/W%N* As a VB programmer I'm prety amazed on them. Can anyone help?

@Mego But anything would be better than nothing. Could use backticks and let the first backticked phrase go in code, the second (if any) in input. Even if this only does one-liners, it'd still be really cool.

Anonymous
@Adám Yep, but I'd need to figure out the TIO API (or have Dennis explain it). AFAIK the only real reason such a thing doesn't exist is because Dennis hasn't finalized the API yet.

3:25 PM
@Mego I don't particularly like the question, but aren't questions about golfing on-topic?

@NewMainPosts Wth. I answered with a correct answer Afaik and i get large amounts of downvotes. More than the challenge

don't answer off-topic questions
it just encourages OP to post again

Oh wow. Sorry for trying to help before the question gets removed

Anonymous
@HyperNeutrino It's not a tips question currently. It's "how do you do this stuff with weird symbols", which is unclear, too broad, and off-topic. Tips questions are "what can I do to optimize code in this language/scenario?" — Mego 1 min ago

user165474
Alright.

user165474

I think any of the likely options are on-topic
but because it's really not clear what he's asking, its off-topic

Well know I know

user165474
3:29 PM
Yup. Don't worry, there's no consequence for not knowing but it's general bad practice to answer questions that are going to get closed without migration.

@HyperNeutrino Eh six downvotes is the consequence

user165474
Well it doesn't really matter too much.

user165474
I mean your rep will be refunded soon.

@Christopher I don't see any mention of compression in the question; I don't see any way your answer is correct (and the question was very unclear and fairly off-topic). So it's not really a surprise that you got downvoted. Even if the OP was asking how to uncompress his text, answering off-topic question just because you know the answer is a poor idea.

@Dada Wnik

3:31 PM
Personally I did not understand the question when I first read it

@HyperNeutrino It was not the rep but the mark on my profile :P

@HyperNeutrino I wrote a bot using the interface, do I have to rewrite it?

user165474
@PhiNotPi I mean, you could just wrap it with some wrapper class thingy that takes in the arguments, passes it to the interface, and then outputs the return value, so you don't have to fully rewrite it but for it to be valid, you'd have to modify it to match the new rules, sorry

user165474
@Christopher Eh. True. But I don't think it shows up on your profile because you deleted it :)

Q: Tips for golfing in Mini-Flak

ChristopherWhat general tips do you have for golfing in Mini-Flak? I'm looking for ideas which can be applied to code-golf problems and which are also at least somewhat specific to Mini-Flak (e.g. "remove comments" is not an answer). Please post one tip per answer. Mini-Flak is just Brain-flak without [] or

@LeakyNun The other python answers were considerably better, I took a quite esoteric approach to what turned out to be a quite trivial problem

How about this challenge: Write a program that takes three inputs, Language, Code, Input, and returns the result.

3:40 PM
@Adám Wayyy to big

@Christopher Why? Should be fairly simple. I didn't say CMC.

user165474
Just figure out how TIO compresses its links and then use TIO :D

@HyperNeutrino The idea is using TIO, not implementing all languages, d'oh!

@Adám I know but still. How many languages? Or is it scored on amount of languages?

@Christopher ^^

3:43 PM
@Adám Ah so the more ya do the more you win. Tie solved by first poster?

@Christopher No. Code-golf.

@Adám So how many languages?

However many are on TIO

Or is tie solved by shortest code

@HyperNeutrino No need, you can just populate the fields, they have id=code id=input, class=output
@Christopher No no, you don't understand. Your program should just be a cover for TIO.
I'm writing one now.

3:45 PM
Would you be guaranteed that the language/code/input would run without errors?

and that the language/code/input will finish within 60 seconds?

@BusinessCat It always does.

@Adám Lame. I am writing my own challenge.

@Adám Either it's going to be so successful that you will hit the rep cap seven times on seven consecutive days or it's going to be so much down voted that your rep will only remain half :P One thing is certain, it's going to extraordinary. (PS : I will upvote)

@KritixiLithos Can't happen on TIO.

3:47 PM
Idea! Answer chaining interpreter! One language implements language A. In language B interpret language A. And so on

I edited the message now @Adám

@KritixiLithos It always does on TIO.

@Christopher "interpret" is often times really broad or really hard

If output is empty after 60 seconds, so be it (i.e. return an empty result).

ah, okay

3:49 PM
@NathanMerrill How would you define it?

I don't think its possible to do it well

@Adám The bot is a simple feed reader. When the RSS feeds get updated, it posts the links.

user165474
The Aggressor works surprisingly well; it's only been beaten by the ugly duckling. The Random Bot's python port is out of order so I may have to run the original Java code.

@HyperNeutrino the first sentence sounds awesome without context.

user165474
hehe lol

4:55 PM
@HyperNeutrino double-check that you are using the updated code of my bot
(there was an edge-case bug which would crash it if the opponent didn't have any snowballs or ducks).

user165474
@PhiNotPi Right I still need to update. The issue was actually because I don't know how to use Python's random.randint lol

user165474
Aggressor still beats Prioritized Random very consistently.

user165474
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ class is starting soon rip, so I gtg now. o/

Really? Hmmm my code is showing something different...

@PhiNotPi hey it's you

4:59 PM
Aggressor and TestBot are the same, right?
The controller I wrote has Random beating Test 99-1
@LeakyNun hi

@PhiNotPi I haven't seen you often

I think there might be a bug in my controller? edit: no I don't see one
Aggressor is actually different than TestBot... but if I've ported it to java correctly, my bot still beats Aggressor 80% of the time.
So yeah, something isn't adding up between our two controllers, or ports.

I don't understand how the Ugly Duckling beats the aggressor

Idea: maybe the bugs are in the order and number of the command line arguments?

Maybe
If I understand the aggressor properly, it just alternates reloading and throwing

5:14 PM
Like, the python entries assume argv[1] = turn, while my java bot assumes args[0] = turn

But that's because argv[0] is the source file name

But with java, what is args[0]?

Okx
args[0] is the first command line argument, but not the source file name

It would be the turn I think

Didn't @HyperNeutrino say he ported my bot to Python to run it? I suspect he might have not adjusted for that.

5:49 PM
nice

@HyperNeutrino let me know if I've managed to fix it

@Adám It's a method, not a property. So $(...).text() should do fine, I guess.

@Arjun VM6846:1 Uncaught TypeError: $(...).text is not a function at <anonymous>:1:14

@Adám I meant $("textarea.output").text(). Does that work?

@Arjun No. Same thing. And how would including the tag name make a difference? There is only one class=output, AFAICT.

6:05 PM
@Adám Sometimes Cascading matters. Had an issue years ago which was solved by adding more address details of the element. Though, that was CSS. Thought, the same will be the case for Jquery. Turns out it's not.
@Adám BTW, @Dennis has outputTextAreas in his source code. I wonder why? There's only single textarea (of class output). I am sure that's causing the issue.

@Arjun I think there is a more fundamental issue. Inspecting the page reveals that the element indeed has no content. I even searched for the text appearing in the textarea, and it was not found. I'm not sure how the text shows up at all.
@Arjun Try this and see if you can find the string 3.14286 anywhere.

@Arjun There are two at the moment: ouput and debug.

. The markup has two textareas.
@Dennis That is what I was going to say!

@Arjun What is .text()? TIO doesn't use jQuery.

@Adám You can do something like $("textarea.output").first().text()
@Dennis Does it not? Which library is it then?

6:12 PM
I use no libraries.

Oo. Nice.
As expected, actually.

I assume $ threw you off. This is actually homebrew though.
function $(selector, parent) {
	return (parent || document).querySelector(selector);
}

function $$(selector, parent) {
	return (parent || document).querySelectorAll(selector);
}

@Dennis Yup, true.
@Adám What are you going to do of this?
@Adám I can't try to find it, as I am on tablet (which runs Android). No debugging tools for Android browsers! As a matter of fact, I am always on tablet. Actually, I haven't logged in to PPCG without being on a tablet.
:P

@Arjun I was trying to write an answer to this.

@Arjun eh? pretty sure you can use adb and use chrome dev tools

6:24 PM
@Poke I currently don't have access to a device other than the one I am using (this tablet).
So, I can do nothing :P

So, unlucky, indeed! :p

General question: We've got a lot of challenges tagged that aren't really KC, because they're about changing a small-ish number of fixed inputs to fixed outputs. If we were to create a tag for this type of challenge, what should the tag be called?
(examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...)

Okx
@ETHproductions I think is enough.

Well, I'd like to create a meta post proposing to make a tag for this type of challenge, so I'm looking for a decent name
Whether or not the tag itself is a good idea
Of the examples I linked, #3 (and perhaps #6) would probably be tagged with this tag and , because the outputs are considerably larger than the inputs

I don't know why #2 is KC

#2 doesn't fit KC, but it does fit this hypothetical tag, which is why I'm proposing it (it was actually ais523's idea)
OK, so from the top of the KC tag wiki:
> Use this tag for questions about producing a constant output.
We have really strayed from the intention of the tag...

Regarding the transcendental number challenge, what does it mean for a function to "eventually dominate any polynomial"?

6:55 PM
@KritixiLithos KC has morphed into 0 or more inputs -> fixed output(s)
I disagree with that being KC personally, but some of the more experienced users seem to like it
there's a meta about it iirc

My proposal is to add another tag for finite number of fixed inputs -> fixed outputs

I'm going to write a post about it

Q: Is Kolmogorov-Complexity only for constant output?

DJMcMayhemWe have lot's of challenges that are about producing constant output. For example: We're no strangers to code golf, you know the rules, and so do I Print a 10 by 10 grid of asterisks Every single one of the "alphabet challenges" we've been recently flooded with These are very clearly kolmogor...

> All of these are not pure KC questions, since the output varies. However, they are all tagged with KC also. Should they be tagged any differently since the output is not constant? Is it worth making a distinction between constant-kolmogorov-complexity and varied-kolmogorov-complexity? (Obviously we could come up with a better name if we decide to retag)

@KritixiLithos I assume it means that the function is not O(polynomial), as in it grows faster than any polynomial (examples include 2^n or n!)

7:00 PM
@PhiNotPi So do you think the number produced in my submission follows that rule?

@Riker Hmm, that actually seems to be about what I'm asking... Hmm...

yours would be a request though
not quite a dupe

@KritixiLithos I'm actually not sure

I had basically been considering asking "There are a lot of KC questions that don't fit the tag wiki, what should we do?"
Perhaps that's not a duplicate, I can't really tell

If we looks at the starting points of the runs of 1s, the runs start at 10^0, 10^2, 10^4, etc.
And so, if your output only consisted of 1s at those positions, then Z(k) would be exponential and therefore not polynomial.

My personal opinion is that KC applies to challenges where there's a fixed, small-ish number of inputs, and the output is considerably different than the input for the most part

But in your case, Z(k) is partially exponential and partially linear
since it goes 1,2,3,...,8,9,100,101,102,103,...999,10000,10001,etc.

I see what you mean

Z(1) = 1, Z(10) = 100, Z(910?) = 10000
Z(90910?) = 1000000

I have to go now, but so far this function doesn't even overtake x^2

Yeah, I think it is O(n) or maybe O(nlogn)

7:26 PM
@PhiNotPi If you 0-index it, it's Z(0), Z(9), Z(909), Z(90909), ...

Yeah I know, the challenge used 1-indexing though so I stuck to that
In the long, run, I think an arbitrary digit is 1 with probability 0.09090909...
Which means it's O(n) and therefore doesn't automatically qualify as transcendental (it might still be, but isn't proven).

There are 5 main types of questions here (continuing my earlier discussion):
- fixed input -> fixed output. This is pure KC.
- fixed input -> non-fixed output (e.g. 5 Favorite Letters, Print some JSON). This is generally also considered KC.
- small-ish fixed number of inputs -> specific, not-easily-related outputs. As is, this is sort of a hybrid between KC and...
- infinite number of inputs -> small-ish fixed number of outputs. This is what the classification tag is for (or decision-problem, if there's only two outputs).

Q: Multiple spaces not showing up in comment code-blocks

MD XFI wrote a solution to a code golf challenge that included the string ".... ....". This exact number of dots and spaces was necessary for the solution to work. Two users commented (here, here) on ways to golf it down. I tested their suggestions and found that they didn't work. Initially I th...

This was fixed almost 8 years ago, but it seems to be back now. Since this seems to be a network wide problem, I have brought up the issue again here. — DJMcMayhem 3 mins ago
Should I post that as an answer?

I have no strong feelings either way

@trichoplax What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?

It takes long hours of practice and dedication

There are some people voting to close the snowball fight as a duplicate, I don't support this because (1) although there are similarities, you aren't able to copy bots over, and (2) it has been several months since those similar challenges have closed.
I think KOTH close-as-duplicate needs to be more limited than normal duplication, since it's not like new people can go back and answer old KOTHs, in the same way people can go back and answer old golfing challenges.

@PhiNotPi Then you'll run into people posting the same koth after the previous one is over
for those sweet internet points

Anonymous
@Poke If it's the exact same KOTH then yeah, close it as a dupe. If it's somewhat similar but a considerable time has passed, then there's no need to close it.

@Mego Just gotta be careful how you define that. There's already enough grey area when it comes to code golf challenges
applying different rules to koth is going to stir the pot

Anonymous
@Poke Grey area is fine. It's up to the discretion of the close/reopen voters to decide if it's beneficial to close it or keep it open.

We don't need hard-and-fast rules for everything

fine with me too
but there have been discussions on discussions and meta discussions about what constitutes as a dupe and what doesn't
so just be aware

Given that I participated in those discussions, I'm aware :)

CMC: Given a user ID calculate the new rep if every user upvoted at once on every post. Assume nobody has upvoted but the rep is from a odd amount of bounties and such, also remember you have to have a minimum amount of reputation to upvote. No serial upvoting will be removed and no max amount of upvotes

That would just be rep + 200

8:43 PM
Opps
Ignore the rep cap

Unless the user doesn't even have enough posts for that :P

So it's rep + ppcg_user_count_over_15_rep*(answer_count_for_user*10 + question_count_for_user*5)

Where ppcg_user_count_over_15_rep doesn't include the user whose ID is input

Hehe. Yep
@DJMcMayhem Good job! That is a hard task. But I can't decide if I should star ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
