@HyperNeutrino most of us here don't read the whole post, just see the title/link in the post and flag it (that's for obvious skin care spam)

@HyperNeutrino Also FIRE helps a lot

It also helps if your name is Glorfindel or tripleee
But fat chance! With FIRE, I'm just as fast >:)

@M.A.R. Where you hoping someone would add Or M.A.R.? :P

@CalvT Well, actually no. Not because I'm faster, because you guys are meaner

@CalvT Yeah, I have FIRE, it's really useful. Alright, thanks @AshishAhuja, I probably shouldn't read the whole thing every time because the title is usually enough :P

@ArtOfCode @Andy @Undo I'm... considering... replacing sh.git with our own "git" module that uses subprocess calls...
...thoughts?

subprocess isn't what was breaking for me earlier was it?
Or is that just issuing system calls to git?

@Andy system calls to get not being spliced right
or rather, not being set up properly.
but that's an easy workaround
the core problem is that sh.git doesn't exist :P

Seems like a problem then :)

and the 'push' and 'branch' functions are, unfortunately, homegrown via subprocess calls

4:42 PM
Sure, system calls are fine. I have git installed

the evil here though, is that i can't use dulwich for the pushing/branching/etc.

Wait...

that's... the evils of dulwich.
@Andy git on the system is fine
our 'git' module is just a wrapper around subprocess, if i write it

What is the problem being solved? What isn't working right?

@Andy remember the "Windows git functions not supported" thing in gitmanager?
the whole thing I wrote to stop the system from failing on tests for you

4:44 PM
If you don't break it again, I'm not going to complain

well, this would 'replace' sh.git with our own 'git' class that would actually be a set of wrapper functions for Windows specifically
and actually allow the use of git in gitmanager
so you could theoretically run Smokey on a Windows env.

*with git functionality
:)

sh.git for *nix, our own git functionality wrappers for Windows
@Andy truth.
so the existing if statement would still exist, but instead of just dying with the sh.git import, it imports classes.Git as git instead
but only for Windows

@ThomasWard Dulwich can do anything, it's just really nasty for things that it doesn't have wrappers for already
I think Art got checkout working barely

@quartata Correction: Dulwich can do anything if shit gets documented
you're going to get a beating if you try and tell me that not having documentation doesn't mean anything

4:46 PM
hue

so before you give me a lecture about "But, it can do abcdefg" consider i"ve been fussing with it for over three hours to just get a 'push to remote' working
and haven't succeeded.
even with valid refspecs, etc.

no no no I didn't mean it like that

@quartata then shush.

I just meant we have to ask is it worth our time to use dulwich vs subprocess
because it's nasty

@quartata we're not using dulwich in gitmanager
we're going to be using a homegrown wrapper around subprocess and windows calls
and rely on sh.git for *nix systems
the only place I use dulwich is in the globalvars to get commit data out of the tree in all environments and I have no intention to use dulwich elsewhere lol.
i'm not replacing sh.git with dulwich
i'm adding our own wrapper around git via subprocess calls to the system installed Git binary for Windows
since dulwich isn't even fully functional yet for simple things, in that we have to headache our way around things, :P
and this is for standard Smokey, not ng
though you're free to use my wrapper, as I might actually publish it as gitwrap_win or such.
if it works
the question is whether or not that'd be desirable
since Dulwich is not kind for those functions

4:51 PM
Kind of sucks we can't statically link libgit2. pygit2 is a lot nicer.
like it has built-ins for pushing
