12:41 AM
Wow. I just realised I've been rounding numbers wrong my whole life. No wonder I kept failing my math tests.

@noitsbecky there are different, not-incorrect rounding algorithms; are you sure you weren't just using a different one than the "norm"?
as long as it's an option (in theory) then it should be fine

I just do the "x.5 always rounds to x + 1" thing
Apparently some people always round x.5 to the nearest even number

to the nearest even number? wtf

@allquixotic well I was using a different one from the norm but in trying to explain to myself why I realised it was wrong.
Also my left ear has stopped working. I think it's plugged with wax.

12:51 AM

Q: Why round to even integers?

wxfflesAccording to the Mathematica help: Round rounds numbers of the form x.5 toward the nearest even integer. For example: Round[{0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5}] gives {0, 2, 2, 4, 4} What's the rationale behind this? Why not the usual x.5 always rounds up?

Bit of a headsup. I most likely won't have access to a PC from the 17th to the 24th. I'll have my phone, and that's about it.
(Reservist)

@JourneymanGeek ah... good luck, don't hurt any muscles :(

I most likely would be freeish in the evenings, but I won't know until then
@allquixotic so far most of them have been relaxed
Very likely we'll get lectures and a musium tour.

Ok my ear is totes broken

@noitsbecky get it looked at!

12:58 AM
@noitsbecky I have then when I have a bad cold

@allquixotic by whom? It's 1am and nobody wants to look into a strangers ear

there's stuff that's supposed to unblock that too
(and its OTC and worth a try)
I've heard decent things about this cerumol.co.uk
@noitsbecky in the morning I think he means

@JourneymanGeek what's the cat getting?
Urgh now I'm getting dizzy and losing my balance. Should probably stop stuffing foreign objects into my ear

1:11 AM
@noitsbecky googled cat ear drops.

1:22 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy lol
@JourneymanGeek why would you do that?
I'm not a cat, I'm becky

@noitsbecky YER A CAT HARRY BECKY!

1:38 AM
@noitsbecky I liked you more when you were a cat. Except for that part when you died.
I'm just kidding, we all love you, so please stop dying.
@JourneymanGeek WE'RE ALL CATS ON THE INTERNET

ahh carp, some russian person snagged my raid card at the last minute. Now other than being (possibly) scammed, i would also have to research the 18,000 pages of facts on distribution of technology to foreign nations , especially certian ones known to have such restrictions.
No problem so i cancel the sale . . . and the whole thing is held up for 10+ days.

@ThatBrazilianGuy au contrare. On the internet no one knows you're a dog

1 hour later…
2:52 AM
so. many. CDs. O_____o

3:04 AM
And these are all just from the "random crap" pile. There is still the real collection
Stupid young me! o___O

that is nothing
I have literally hundreds, or I did, moving makes you reduce when you pay per box :-)

3:22 AM
Damn. I should have counted them

lol
This is normal

Nooooooooo! PowerShell script-bodied methods are run with the current restrictions instead of the ones they were defined with!

4 hours later…
7:35 AM
/me looks in
so car was solid ice cube
then door failed to lock properly
/me sighs

Bob
7:48 AM
@djsmiley2k can we swap
car was an oven

8:19 AM
brrrrp

8:53 AM
D:
@Bob well my boot unlocks itself while i'm driving
the passenger side door opens but the latch sticks so it doesn't lock when you close it

9:10 AM
@djsmiley2k is it a nissan?
everyone who has keys is always late, we have been stood outside for 30 mins

9:24 AM
whoops
hola

@Burgi nah ford.
@Burgi ah the curse of keys.
Known issue wit hthe boot unlocking - the stupid rubber gasket causes it to suck in moisture into the switch
as for the passenger door, it's either iced up (both times it's happened it's been really cold) or it just needs replacing/greasing.

Hi!

9:42 AM
fucking minion >:(
me: a customer site is reporting it has a virus. I need you to prep a clean deployment from our backups
him: thats backend stuff
wtf...

@Burgi welp, the guy who annoyed me at work got sacked

me: you have two choices here. prep the deployment or log into the server and run the security tools

10:43 AM
Does anyone know the name of this font?

@Rahul2001 i think it is based on a handdrawn font the original dev used

@SaintCore Failed to find font
@Burgi Hm... the gitub repo has a high-res version, but that only includes the chameleon, not the text

thats the original logo
looks handdrawn to me

@Burgi yeah

10:53 AM
ask on the N++ forums

I asked on the live chat, but no reply yet
This is what I'm using in the community promotion ad :P

why?
what are community promotion ads?

@Burgi !?!?!?!?!?!?

Q: Community Promotion Ads - 2017

Grace NoteIt is a bit late into this new year, being that we're already in the second month, but we are now cycling the Community Promotion Ads for 2017! What are Community Promotion Ads? Community Promotion Ads are community-vetted advertisements that will show up on the main site, in the right sidebar....

i run an adblocker and never see them

:O

Q: How do I put my automatic car into neutral while moving in drive?

AjeyI have a friend that is always putting his car in neutral and revving it up and I find that the coolest thing in the world. If someone could tell me how I can put my 2006 Civic in neutral while in motion that would be amazing.

what, what what what?
!!what

11:19 AM
@Burgi I disable adblocker for SE

@Rahul2001 Do you click on the ads? If you don't there is no point ...

@DavidPostill I do, actually, more often than I do on other sites

what
'The LG Ultrafine 5K monitor costs almost £900 and is promoted as an external display for Mac devices.
But customers noticed the display flickered or switched off when near a wi-fi router and some posted negative reviews on Apple's website.'
wat?!
I almost never, ever click on ads :/

@djsmiley2k I never click on ads because I can't see them :)
I wish there was a ublock origin for tv ads :)

11:39 AM
its called watching the BBC

@Burgi haha. I rarely watch BBC. There are several 100 more interesting channels to watch.

@DavidPostill my brain just blocks them out lol
my brain just ignores stuff for me, no need to install anything extra
much easier to manage too
@DavidPostill lol hardly

11:57 AM
@Burgi :35249618 In any case even the BBC shows adverts ;p
> The 30-second commercial was shown on BBC Two, during last month’s coverage of Wimbledon. The advertisement urged viewers to “log on now and get your tickets today” for the ATP World Tour finals, a tennis tournament that will be held at the O2 Arena in November, and also contained numerous references to Barclays.

12:21 PM
@djsmiley2k lol
Yeah I saw that yesterday
Also Dell's useless tracking system still has zero information about my laptop, although I've had a delivery window notification email now so I know at least it exists

just not sure that is how you do it. To keep people from messing up my ebay auctions , i now have a warning at the top that says thieves scammers and frauds, and people who's mothers wouldn't love them, not allowed to bid on this auction. Nobody bid.

12:38 PM
not my fault, they added a new button today.

What's the new button do?

pffft

@Psycogeek How do you identify "thieves scammers and frauds"? If you can do that automatically you could make a shed load of money! ;p

I want to click that button

12:41 PM
@noitsbecky Quite common with Dell, I got notification of my system being "on route" and going to take 5 days, only got valid tracking information the day before it arrived.

@Mokubai Yeah, basically that's the same as what happened to mine. "Dispatched" 3 days ago, tracking info blank till now. Delivery tomorrow.

Pretty sure the last couple of systems I bought were similar.

I did bug people in here a few days ago asking if anyone had similar experiences with Dell, I guess I must have missed you :-P

Aye :)
Still, if you catch one of their sales then you can get a pretty good deal.

Indeed, I very much did catch one of their sales and got a very good deal
I think I saved about 600 pounds of the normal, new price of my machine, though part of that was from buying refurbished.
Got it during the 10% off January sales.

12:45 PM
Got my machine in the December 1st sales :)

The problem is , there is little resolution to a bad buyer anymore, sellers cannot give negative feedback, and scammers can ding your feedback after they scam you. So the users have identified them, but they cant tell anyone.
It is like being at the department store with a criminal in the return aisle, holding up the whole show , with no reciept claiming they bought what they stole.
All the department store has to do is announce over the PA , that another criminal is at thier return desk, and watch half the store clear out.
business as usual.

@Mokubai Nice. Laptop or desktop?

and have you ever been there at the return desk, standing behind, wondering Who would buy that , then return it? why does the person have 15-20 of them? nobody buys a whole cartload of stuff they dont even know if they will like. They buy 1 and try it. But there they are arguing and up to yelling at the counter people. They should be tarred and feathered and run out of town.
but the department store does not want to upset anyone. it is easier for YOU to pay for thier losses.

@noitsbecky Desktop. Basically the best you can get without paying stupid prices for an Alienware
Games be smooooooth

@Psycogeek haha, people tried to pull that crap with me when I worked in retail
I'd take their goods out back to 'inspect them'
tell them I believed they were stolen, however if they weren't they are free to stick around and chat with security.
No one ever wanted to stick around

1:01 PM
@Mokubai Mmmm :-D
When you've run out of reviews to read to distract yourself while waiting for your new laptop.... and resort to reading the service manual

"Just get here already, I want to play!"

^^ This
Also want to check it for overclockability and make sure there's no dead pixels/crashes/etc.
Who knows what it was returned/refurbished for :-/

Hated reading reviews and Dell forum posts tho. "What have I just bought?" :/

and why am I reading this , after I paid.

@Psycogeek Exactly.

1:05 PM
Lol.
Dell's forums seem to require you to register and login just to read them now...

"Wait, the power supply fan is weirdly noisy?"

@Psycogeek Because in the EU, you get the right to return anything within 14 days if you don't like it, as long as you haven't broken it
Zero mercury bulbs, FR65 flame retardant display lid... interesting o_0

@noitsbecky you can do that in the US also , unless they have a sign, and notice. which your likely to see before buying. Very few stores use that method.

0.91 kg of cardboard, 99.5% recycled. Shouldn't catch fire.
@Psycogeek Here it's a legal right you can't get rid of by displaying a sign
1.03 watts in sleep, 15 watts idle according to the datashet. Eh.
First section of the setup manual is "Setting up the VR Headset (optional)" o_0
What is this obsession with VR lately

Reality sucks, making VR suck less :-)

1:24 PM
Apparently my screen is 15.60 mm (0.61 in) diagonal.
I feel cheated. When I bought a 15.6 laptop I thought it meant 15.6 inches, not 15.6 millimeters.

My First MacBook?

dont forget the laptop bag for it :-)
@Burgi it is a hackintosh, but were not allowed to tell anyone

Hah

lol

1:33 PM
Damn, the USB-C/Thunderbolt port on the Alienware doesn't support power delivery
But the one on the XPS does
:-(

Bob
1:57 PM
@noitsbecky was it actually refurb or "as new"?

@Bob 'certified refurbished'

Bob
ah
so actual refurb

Do external hard disks park the head ? What happens if you pull the cable mid read
Should I be careful about putting the drive to standby before unplugging it

they do, if you pull it mid read it likely parks.
if you pull it mid write :-) that is what to be carefull of
if a program or system is trying to access it, and you pull it, they tend to act better than internal drives not responding.

Bob
2:15 PM
@HackToHell they just use standard internal drives... which all park the head on power loss

in windows systems, you can still change a few hardware/driver things like any drive. for the cache stuff.

@Bob ooh nice :)
How does that work, is there like residual power

My laptop has an 8GB SSD for cache, but I can't find any settings relating to it... What is this?

2:29 PM
@OliverSalzburg I can beat that. Very easily.

@Rahul2001 is it a SSHD?
@HackToHell weak magnets

Hey @allquixotic and @Bob what about a !!remindme command for Cavil with a message and timer parameters? I think it would be quite nice! :)

so if there's no force on the voice coil, it just gets attracted back

@JourneymanGeek I... don't know

If I weren't a total programming failure I'd contribute with the code...

2:32 PM
@Rahul2001 in which case, we don't have enough information to tell you
but the 8gb cache sounds like that
and its managed in hardware then

@Rahul2001 I recently had to format and install Windpows 7 on a laptop with such SSD caches. It's quite confusign
Does it show a pre-boot screen with "Intel RST" or something like that?

actually
@Rahul2001 how do you know it has an 8gb cacge?

@JourneymanGeek Uh... flipkart.com/…

In my case there was a BIOS setting you had to enable, two actually. Set "SATA mode" to "RAID" and enable "Intel RST Option ROM" who would then load immediately before (or after, dunno) POSTing. It would detect the cache disk, but as "disabled". Then you had to install Intel RST drivers and app on Windows, and use the app to mark the cache as active and associated to the current HDD. Then the ROM tool would detect it as active.
Made quite a difference on boot speed. A significant difference. And hybrid sleep was a few seconds.

2:45 PM
@Psycogeek also it works for distance buying, so you don't need to visit a store :)

@djsmiley2k does it work for used cars , or used cars specificlly sold AS-Is? In the US generally all used cars are buyer beware.
unless specifically stated, it is assumed, and even the courts assume (when you get ripped off) that a "used" car is as-is. it doenst even need to be on the paperwork, unless specific seller claims are made that it is not as-is.

depends if dealer or private seller
private seller is, and always has been (afaik) buyer beware

@djsmiley2k thats different. here if you roll off a dealer lot even with used car, the transmission flies off while going down the road and your whole family is killed, they just refer you back to the paperwork, where they have absolved themsevles of everything. . . while forcing down your throat a warrenty that isnt worth the paper it is written on.
they will say or even charge you for a 128 point inspection, that you can be assured nobody ever did :-)

@Psycogeek ouch
here you'd be likely seeing them in court for manslaughter or something
@Psycogeek Point 1. 'There's a car'
Point 2. errrrr?

@ThatBrazilianGuy there is no Cavil

3:02 PM
@allquixotic died too far away from a resurrection ship? ;p

@djsmiley2k you can run the reg through a website that checks it isn't a write-off or has any outstanding finance on it

@allquixotic Do you mean, "there is no Cavil right now at the present moment", or did you mean "there has not ever been any Cavil and there won't ever be one again, not that it ever did"?

@allquixotic yeah what happened to him? as a viper pilot i want to know if i can slap another toaster sticker on the side of my cockpit

I got myself one of those LIFX bulbs. That is way more fun than I anticipated

@JourneymanGeek ah that makes sense

3:15 PM
@HackToHell I take apart my dead hard drives ;p

I couldn't take mine apart, they needed that special screw driver and i couln't find one :'(

@HackToHell sounds like you need the iFixit 64-bit Driver Kit
it has 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 possible states of each bit inside of the kit being either installed or not installed (into the storage tray) :P

lol
I think every geek needs a basic precision screwdriver kit

I just got a crazy idea: send someone an ASCII message as a time lapse video of me taking bits in and out of my 64-bit driver kit

3:25 PM
unfortunately it'd have an encoding efficiency of around 1 megabyte for 8 bits of information

lol
funny thing is I'm thinking about making a magnetic latch for my toilet door from old HDD magnets ._.

@allquixotic That looks sweet

@JourneymanGeek don't dogs just go out in the grass and go pppppppt? :P

@allquixotic there's an attached toilet to the room, and the door pops open if its windy ;p
that keeps the room from being optimally cool
THIS IS SERIOUS.
(and yes, we do actually take advantage of the copious local greenery for the process of canine evacuation)

@Burgi nod
I brought my car privately
I looked angrily at the guy

@Burgi We have cat barbecue in Brazil.

o_O

> Churrasquinho de gato (literally translated as “cat barbecue”), Brazil’s popular meat skewers, in Pontes e Lacerda in 2015. Carolina Arantes / The Story Institute
> Leaving the Palmeiras stadium on Saturday, there were a number of what are called "churraquinhos de gato" or cat barbecues. These are run by street vendors who bring in a barrel or a small charcoal grill and barbecue up some questionable meat on spits and sell them for less than US$2
To be honest, it's supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek nickname. Supposedly.
> The other big area famous for cat meat is, supposedly, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Now, we aren't saying that this place serves cat in five-star restaurants - far from it. Street meat is commonly accused of being cat meat. There have been busts on Brazilian slaughterhouses selling cat and dog meat.

We have reason to believe that the name "cat meat skewers" has some basis in fact, here. Nobody likes the concept, even in Brazil, so please don't jump to conclusions. Just sayin', if your barbeque tastes a little off...
> I was offered this at a children's birthday party, and I didn't quite hear what it was until it was already in my mouth. I just about choked. Because, well, it is a foreign country and they just might be serving cat... who knew? Turns out - wasn't.
LOL FLAGGED AS OFFENSIVE!
Brazilian "food truck".
Although in the latest years it's become really trendy to build expensive food trucks with expensive "gourmetized" food:
So you have, at one hand, cheap unsanitary old cars with cheap unsaniraty food
(I'm leaving the "unsaniraty" typo, btw)
And on the other hand, people who pay restaurant prices to eat in fancy food truck fairs.

@Bob: Laptop's arriving tomorrow! :-D

Brazil is a country of contrasts

TL;DR: it doesn't matter
Or possibly it does a very tiny bit

5:11 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Poor vs. rich?

@Burgi in C, switch is faster

You know what that means...
(Soon...)
This amplifier sounds good on paper and it seems it delivers...

Hi! Do you know why I can see an AP in my smartphone and not in my laptop?
It is the library WiFi

@QuicoLlinaresLlorens no

Before I could see it
It is very strange

5:15 PM
Turn your laptop's WiFi off and back on?

peel back the onion
you're a "Computer Engineer"; use your brain

@BenN I did

what is required for a WiFi connection to work?

@BenN nice find

(1) the infrastructure must require no newer protocol than what the wifi card supports
(so 802.11n or later infrastructure won't allow 802.11b card)
(2) the card must support at least one common freq band as the infrastructure

5:16 PM
My card is new

(3) the client must not be banned / MAC filtered

And I think the WiFi has not changed

@BenN @allquixotic the code uses a really crazy nested if (roughly 4 or 5 levels)

also, the AP may have stopped broadcasting its SSID
in which case you can try to force it to join a "hidden network"
if it is indeed a hidden network, most GUI based wifi clients will make it extremely difficult to impossible to know whether your problem is related to authentication (bad password) or protocol issues

@Burgi Heh, I once wrote a monstrosity with a half dozen almost-copy-pasted 4-deep for loops
Then I saw that it was completely illegible and rewrote it into something saner

5:20 PM
@BenN :D I do that still with languages that I don't know well enough to have associative arrays / maps or other sophisticated data structures, class / struct encapsulation of data, etc

@BenN yeah thats what i'm doing on this old site, i was just wondering to myself if there was a logical and sane reason they had used this nested snakey code
clearly not

> recursion
huh... recursion is bad? poor Haskell programmers ;p

At home wifi works
And at library it doesn't
And with my smartphone at library works wtf

@allquixotic i can never get recursive functions to work properly

@QuicoLlinaresLlorens as I mentioned, if you dig deeper than "it doesn't work", you might be able to figure out why... you would benefit greatly from using a wireless debugging tool on your phone and/or laptop to get more information about the network... what band is it on? what authentication scheme? what 802.11 standards does it support? is it a hidden network? etc
there's a decent chance that it's just flaky firmware on the AP's end and only a restart of the AP will fix it; but that's far from guaranteed and I wouldn't just assume it

5:38 PM
Heya!
I use goto statements often in my cmd applications...

Oh hey, new Pascal quadros are out

!! s/quadros/cards that are intentionally 5-10% slower and 50-200% more expensive than their identical consumer counterparts/

@allquixotic Oh hey, new Pascal cards that are intentionally 5-10% slower and 50-200% more expensive than their identical consumer counterparts are out (source)

@allquixotic or the libarary AP is overloaded, the phone hides the fact the wifi keeps cutting out rather nicely...
So many possible reasons

@djsmiley2k yep

5:54 PM
@allquixotic Radeon Pro WX cards may make more sense.
Still not cheap, but you're getting better value for money.

@bwDraco better FP perf and custom drivers optimized for correctness instead of perf? yeah

Yup.

hmm

($620-$650 for the WX 7100, with fully-enabled Polaris 10)

I kinda wanna write a tool based on LXD that automatically grabs all the dependent shared libraries for a given Linux binary from a "known working" distro (ideally, the distro it was compiled on) and puts them in the same dir as the binary so that users can do LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ./myReallyVersionDependentBinary

6:04 PM
Consider, however, that the consumer equivalent goes for a mere $240.

mainly because it's easier to write the tool than to compile PhantomJS (once, on any platform), and I'm sick of these clueless idiots emailing phantomjs user group begging and crying for binaries for CentOS from 2003

10:39 PM
!!peeeeeenguin

awww :)

@allquixotic Actually no, for one, the Quadro GP100 has 16GB of HBM2 VRAM, none of their consumer "counterparts" have either HBM2 or 16GB VRAM.
It also has 80Gbps NVLink instead of SLI bridges, and supposedly can be forced into "GeForce mode"
Other than it having 15x the FP64 performance of the Pascal Titan X, it seems to be otherwise the same chip with 16GB HBM2

huh
and how much? $2k? 3?

Pricing has not been announced yet >_<
Looks like they basically uncrippled the FP64 of the Titan X, shoved some HBM2 onto it, and sold it as a Quadro. It's got FP64 at 1/2 of FP32 instead of 1/32 FP32 as on the Titan
> The Quadro GP100 has four DisplayPort 1.4 slots and one DVI slot. It will be shown for the first time at the SolidWorks World 2017 in Las Vegas, which starts on Sunday. The GPU will ship worldwide, but pricing was not immediately available.
I'd be fracking hilarious to see what performance you'd get putting the GP100 into "GeForce Mode"...
I don't think there are any other chips out there with both HBM2 and GDDR5X versions to do a direct comparison with
