@El'endiaStarman I gotta say as a past chatroom owner (not on SE) I'd have just banned everyone who frustrated me before stepping down. Hope you're not too stressed out. Remember PPCG is just supposed to be a fun escape and not a full time job. Thanks for the data explorer :]

He left for good?!

Programming Languages and Language Design

Proposed Q&A site for programmers interested in the design of practical, esoteric, and golfing programming language, as well as those who understand and use esolangs.

Closed before being launched.

Ah, thanks

2:50 PM
Should I make a KOTH "Massive arena battle" challenge? I'm interested in KOTH challenges but I dont know what to do.
For example, All the submitted scripts fight in a big circular arena

KotHs are a lot of work to set up, although less so than they used to be because people have been working on frameworks to help with that. You could start by describing the idea in the sandbox to get it well specified and make sure it's feasible.

@Mego Like just adding a TIO to each of the answers if it doesn't have one?

@MatthewRoh You could use the KoTHComm framework, if you can figure out how it works.
And if you know Java.

I do. A bit.
Anyways I think it would be better if the post was a community wiki.

@Poke Yes, and adding new answers in languages that are on TIO but don't already have answers

@Mego Sounds like a neat idea. Have a star

I'm not sure that I wanna test my sanity by attempting to program a primality test in Half-Broken Car in Heavy Traffic ... :-/

I don't even know how to do a primality test in brainfuck

@BusinessCat Very carefully

@BusinessCat you don't. There's not even basic division stuff.

But it's Turing complete
So you can do it
Oh, of course Dennis did it in 62 bytes

The language worst for golfing
Whitespace
I mean, If one masters whitespace, We can say he mastered all langs

No
If someone masters Half-broken car in heavy traffic he won the universe though

If someone masters brainfuck, his brain is already fucked

brainfuck isn't all that difficult to do things in. it's difficult to do things effectively in, but once you understand what's happening, it's pretty simple.

I know. But mastering is hard af.

@MatthewRoh nah, it's pretty easy copy & pasting from Dennis' BF answers ;P

4:08 PM
Wait, what happened with El'Endia? Did I miss something?

He got sick of moderating noisy people who didn't learn

I thought that suspensions slowly increased in duration
Meaning that if someone didn't learn, eventually they would just be gone for very long periods of time

They do, but it resets after some time.

Anonymous
@Rainbolt The berating he received after every suspension probably had something to do with it, too

@Mego That's the part that I feel bad about. People didn't seem to learn.

4:18 PM
I feel bad now ;-;

Oh okay, I see the transcript now, and I understand what happened. @El'endiaStarman got the wrong idea. I am not "for noise". There are three options available to us here, and I'll spell them out so that I am no longer miscategorized:
1. Moderate noise loudly. Nag a lot.
2. Moderate noise quietly. Nag when it gets bad.
3. Don't moderate noise.
Number 2 is my position, and I'm sorry that @El'endiaStarman got the wrong idea.
Yesterday I made a comment and got labelled "metanoise". Today I'm labelled "for noise". You see the problem here?

I totally agree

We've been pretty good at number 2. Noise rarely goes above a few messages.

To me, it feels like the mods and ROs were seemingly afraid of stepping on people's toes. Too much worry about "community consensus" (as if that's really a thing). You were elected by community consensus or appointed thereof. Take that responsibility and work it.
8

@Rainbolt Three options... if only it were that simple.

4:22 PM
I realize I am oversimplifying, and that noise levels fall on a scale, but I think you get the idea

IMO, the only stuff that's noise is excessive emotes/emojis/weird unicode characters, or unintelligible/nonsensical posts for the sake of it
Idle chatter isn't noise

I think part of the problem is that when done well, 2 is invisible, so only the occasional discussion where silent kicking wasn't sufficient is seen, which makes it look like 1.

And sometimes I get the sense the RO's think it is

So... does this mean we'll need another RO election?

Whatever happened to Megos suggestion of adding more ROs?

4:27 PM
Well regardless of if you wanted more RO's before, we could definitely use some now that elendia has resigned

Anonymous
@AdmBorkBork I agree. It always felt like there wasn't enough enforcement of the policies.

@feersum I'm tired, too. I wish we as a community could just agree on some very basic standards of acceptable social behavior. I believe the standards I outlined here are suitable for this room. But even if my proposal isn't the one we go with, I just want the issue to be settled, so we can go back to chatting without hourly debates on what is and isn't acceptable here.

Anonymous
13 hours ago, by Mego
I posted that proposal 2 weeks ago. Since then, it's gotten decent support (+11/-3), and no other solutions have been proposed (the other two answers, both by xnor, identify the current problems rather than propose a solution). There's even stronger support (+18/-4) for my proposal of electing more room owners. I think that's enough support on both of them to move forward with them. It's up to the mods and current ROs now to implement them.

So?

Anonymous
It's now at +12/-2

4:29 PM
I brought it up last night. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do. It's up to the mods and ROs to run the election, add the new ROs, and implement the policy.

> It's up to the mods and ROs to run the election
I don't see why. The implementation is.

If we do get an RO election, I nominate Mego.

Anonymous
@mınxomaτ It feels strange to me for someone to run the election who isn't capable of actually adding the elected users as ROs.

Why? It's a community election. This doesn't exclude feedback by the mods.

Anonymous
I dunno. Maybe I'm just being weird.

4:32 PM
E.g. Write an election post and wait a few days for crucial improvements via edits. Then go through.

Anonymous
I'd like the election to be run like mod elections - nominations, then picking a certain number of candidates, then voting for top 3 choices. Unfortunately, it's not really feasible to do that on meta.

@AdmBorkBork Kicks and suspensions are not generally visible to the community unless they go searching for evidence, so most of the actions we take are unnoticed. This is how it should be, so no one else has to be disturbed by it. There are still grey areas which leads to the community discussing whether something should be acceptable, but this doesn't mean no action is being taken meanwhile.

Predictive @NewMainPosts: Do we need a post for every language?

every language that people are interested in golfing in

I for one am only here because of the generally friendly attitude our community has

@DJMcMayhem man, that hammer seems unjustified on tips :P

@muddyfish I'd absolutely agree. Come here for the code-golf, stay here for the people

@trichoplax If that is indeed the case (and I'm obviously not a mod or RO, so I can't say for sure, but I'll believe you), my point still stands. What's the escalation point? Where does the kick for an hour turn into a kick for 10 days?

@trichoplax Or, alternatively, what sort of communication exists between mods/ROs regarding kicks/suspensions? If someone is a (continuous) problem, and every mod/RO is acting independently with their own escalation plan, then that problematic person is around a lot longer than should be.

@BusinessCat Technically 10. However, CJY is gone, Elendia stepped down, and Alex is rarely around. So really, 7.

I would have gone with 3, but 4 is fine.

Why 3?

Anonymous
I'm fine with 3, but I'm curious why that specific number

I guess I just like 10. It's a nice round number.
4 is fine

4:47 PM
but 11 is prime

@AdmBorkBork Kicks within a single day scale from 1 minute to 5 minutes to 30 minutes, and exclude a user from just this room. Suspensions exclude a user from the entire SE chat network, and last for 30 minutes if automatic (sufficiently many users flagged). For moderator applied suspensions, the usual pattern is 7 days, then 30 days, then a year, although individual mods can choose any length they deem appropriate.

We should elect π new ROs, to cover vacation time.

@Pavel Did you mean ASCII 0 and 48?

@trichoplax El'endia mentioned that "trichoplax had an idea that could be an interesting experiment and it would allow a more general "topic" while enabling a greater degree of control over the environment."
I'm curious what that is, if that rings any bells

@AdmBorkBork That's a good point. As it happens, there is excellent communication between the mods and room owners so persistent disruptive behaviour is identified as such.
@NathanMerrill I'd seen your room invite, but I've been working through responses in order. I'll drop in now.

@NewMetaPosts can we get this pinned and possibly featured?

I think it's sufficiently different, as it's also asking for subtraction, and a minimum covering

Yeah, I haven't really inspected your challenge yet. That's just the first thing it reminded me of

I'd say it's related but not a duplicate

but is it a good challenge?

I'm not sure if it's the sort of challenge I'd try myself, but it seems interesting enough

@muddyfish Featured probably won't happen while the Best Of competition is going on, since I think we can only have two featured meta questions at a time. Pinned would be nice.

@BusinessCat yes.
Either ASCII 48 or 49 is probably good.

as far as I know, @NewMetaPosts isn't a room owner, so we'd need someone else to do the pinning
also, given that it's mostly a chat-internal thing, pinning it to chat makes more sense than pinning it to the site

Should nomination posts be community wikis?

Q: Write an Incident tokeniser

ais523Background Incident is a fairly unusual programming language, in that its list of tokens is not predetermined, but rather inferred from the input. As such, tokenising an Incident program can be fairly difficult, especially if you want to do so efficiently. This task is about doing that yourself....

@Mego presumably to handle the situation in which a good user is given a bad nomination by a third party

Phew. Normality here. I was expecting to find anarchy (i.e. non-programming talk).

if the post were a CW, that'd invite people to edit it to make it better

@ais523 I'd expect that anybody who would be nominated by another user would have edit privileges

I guess the way I'd see it is, if you actively want your post to be edited, that would be a good reason to CW it; it's what CW is for

@wizzwizz4 I know, TNB is slowly improving :)

@Pavel Do whatever you think is best

@BusinessCat in most of the languages where you can do that already, such as C, false casts to NUL and true casts to SOH, i.e. you're preserving the value as an integer

5:39 PM
@Mego Indeed, rep is easy to gain in PPCG.

There's a language on TIO called "fish" which is apparently a shell and apparently doesn't have an answer on Hello, World!. Perhaps I'll post one myself
Looks like it's just echo Hello, World!

@ETHproductions I thought it was called ><>...

fish is the same sort of thing as bash
most shells have names ending sh, it's a tradition at this point

@ais523 there are a few differences but not many

yep, they aren't identical (or there'd be no point in both existing), but they play in the same space

5:41 PM
@wizzwizz4 There is also a ><> on TIO

Someone should write a shell using ><>

Anonymous
@Pavel I would rather you have spent the time to actually write a decent nomination post, instead of "He's pretty cool and as far as I can tell is on basically all the time."

@ETHproductions There's fish... and ><>...

Yeah... it confused me at first

5:42 PM
The friendly interactive shell (fish) is a Unix shell that attempts to be more interactive and user-friendly than former shells. The design goal of fish is to give the user a rich set of powerful features in a way that is easy to discover, remember, and use. fish is considered an "exotic shell", in that its syntax derives from neither the Bourne shell (ksh, bash, zsh) nor the C shell (csh, tcsh). Also unlike previous shells, which disable certain features by default to save system resources, fish enables all features by default. == Highlights == fish has "search as you type" automatic suggestions...

I want to vote, but I don't want to put in any effort.
CW was the compromise.

Anonymous
sigh

If you don't want to put in any effort, I recommend abstaining from participation or you are likely to do more harm than good.

Is it considered good practice to post similar answers (rather, the same answer) in different languages just for the sake of completeness?

On something like Hello World, sure.

5:44 PM
if the question's so easy that the answers end up identical, then there's some debate about what to do

Just saying, processing can't take input afaik, so primality checking is out for Processing (since it has to be a full program)

IIRC the relevant meta question has multple contradictory answers that are highly upvoted

On Hello, World! there's countless programs that are just "Hello, World" or the same without the closing quote

@KritixiLithos Files?

So I'd say it's ok

5:45 PM
if the question's difficult, then posting translations of the same algorithm into a range of languages is fine (although depending on the language, you may be able to do golfing tricks a different way)

@wizzwizz4 Oh, right, I can use file IO. But the rest of the program is still going to be very similar to Java
So I don't know whether I should post it

@KritixiLithos Probably not.
Processing is just <insert language here> with some extra APIs added.

Processing is Java

Processing is not Java, even though it is similar to it and uses the same syntax.

@Pavel Processing has loads of languages.
@KritixiLithos Java, Jython, the other one...

5:49 PM
The Processing I'm talking about is Processing-java

@wizzwizz4 What other one?

@KritixiLithos It's sort of Java.
@Pavel I thought there was another one.
-.(o.o).- I've only used Processing once.

Additionally, Processing is golfier than Java (println instead of System.out.println)

I though that was a it which must not be named "the other one" rather than a I forgot "the other one"

@Pavel Erm... Would the former be a better cover-up?

6:10 PM
Doesn't look like PicoLisp has an answer on Hello, World!... I wonder why?

@Mego Just out of curiosity, how did you decide on 4 room owners?
I find it hilarious that I'm able to accept an answer from the VLQ queue, but not vote or flag

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem The goal is to have at minimum one room owner online, watching chat, at all times. Ideally, we'd want 2 or more. I felt that having 4 positions open would be the best way to meet that goal. If we had less than 4, I don't think we'd have enough, leading to us repeating this process soon. If we had more than 4, it would be overkill.

About a month ago, Mego posted a proposal to elect at least two more. It was well received. Then El'endiaStarman quit, so that means the community should be okay with "at least three more". Four is "at least three".
And it isn't too much higher than three either, so it seems acceptable

@DJMcMayhem Haha, I found that hilarious too

What's the VLQ?

But five is just right out (sorry, couldn't resist)

@Mego Sorry, but no. That would sanction it and I'm not ready to do that. I applaud the initiative, but quite frankly, I think you're overstepping your boundaries.
I hope you don't take this the wrong way. None of us mods would have organized an election without consulting all other mods.

Oh. I didn't realize this wasn't official

Anonymous
@Dennis See, that's what I said before, but I was encouraged to go ahead and set it up. It's clear from community consensus that we should have more room owners, and that an election is a good way to choose them. Since nothing had been done in a month since the proposal, I went ahead and set it up.

Elendia's resignation was a major catalyst for this - it's clear that something needs to be done.

El'endia resigned? When was that?

@DJMcMayhem I'm not sure there's any way to determine what is or isn't official on PPCG; you can ask on meta but you won't necessarily get a definitive answer; you can ask the mods but they might or might not agree with each other, and might or might not refer it to the community

As of this moment and indefinitely, I will be suspending my moderator actions and maybe even stop chatting altogether in The Nineteenth Byte.

As a moderator, I try to enforce the will of the community. I don't know what that is anymore. There are a couple loud people on both sides, for noise and against noise, and a bunch of quiet people who don't say anything. I've tried to do my part in determining what "noise" is and controlling it, but now it seems to me that you guys would rather have a noisy chatroom. @Mego Or El'endia overreacted. You can't point to a resignation and say "This is proof that something is wrong."
I'm not stating my stance, just pointing out the other possibility

well, it is proof that the room has less moderation than it used to

Anonymous
6:29 PM
@Rainbolt I don't think he did. The constant berating he received for enforcing the chatiquette is a definite sign that there is a problem.

Yes, but not proof that it needs more moderation
Mego's post is proof that the community wants change. It was voted on by the community. Elendia's resignation is only proof that Elendia wants change, and should not be taken as proof of anything beyond that.

It's also a biased data point, because other mods don't post "not resigning today!" every day ;-)

@NewMainPosts posting on PPCG is what you're doing wrong here

Huh, there's only 1 question in its related list... I've never seen that before

@ETHproductions It's already mentioned in the close reason, which is visible to the author of the post

Ah, OK.

I can't remember if it shows up as a comment prior to the actual closure or not (I know dupe votes do, and then they get converted to a banner after closure).

@NewMainPosts Nooo! It was deleted before I managed to comment to the OP to search on SO for segmentation fault.

they literally tagged it

6:35 PM
Oh well; they can handle a bit more noise.
@GabrielBenamy Heh. I suppose it's a little puzzling...

Is it common/acceptable practice to delete questions like that as well?

Anonymous
@Rainbolt A room owner stepping down because they believe the system isn't working, in addition to community consensus that the system isn't working, is pretty damning evidence that the system isn't working.

@ETHproductions I suspect so; they'd only be useful if tagged as a duplicate, but the duplicate is going to be on SO not here

@ room owners, etc: can we get a specific chat room for meta-TNB chat please?

Anonymous
@GabrielBenamy It's perfectly on-topic here.

6:37 PM
@ETHproductions I usually VTD them because they are completely off-topic

@Mego I agree with that entire statement, and don't think you understand what I said

fwiw, what the original poster is doing wrong is that they're trying to scanf a string into a char

@Dennis I feel, (and I think Mego, and at least several others, agree) that the current mods/ROs are understepping your boundaries. As said, the proposal has been up a month, and nothing has happened. As a result, @Mego took action, and I applaud him for that. If the mods undermine/nuke this, well, then that also sends a pretty clear message.

I think we should have a "signal" star.

6:37 PM
(which is not a sort of type mismatch C can detect)

Anonymous
@Rainbolt I wasn't meaning to disagree :)

@Mego I agree that someone will have to step up now that El'endia is stepping down, but the details of the election should be up to someone who can actually appoint the winners.

Essentially, an extra feature like a star that lets us flag posts as signally.

@wizzwizz4 you mean, during ontopic discussions, you star basically every post? that'd make the chat really tedious to use

@ais523 that's what I was thinking, "why are you declaring strings as char?"

6:38 PM
@ais523 No... ^^^
I ninja'd you.

@mego I mean I just pointed to your post as evidence. I don't know why you then pointed out to me that it is evidence. It made it sound like you disagreed.

well, even if it's not the same thing as a star (which is unlikely to be implemented), clicking it on every post would be tedious

@ais523 We can shift-click for selecting blocks.
Or use key-combos...

I find PPCG chat really unusable in several ways
the amount of explicit effort needed to identify posts is a big one, though

@Dennis If that's how you really feel, why haven't you mod-hammered Mego's nominations thread as off-topic?

6:39 PM
@ais523 Create a bot that forwards your activity.

Anonymous
@Dennis Maybe I was being a bit impatient, and maybe I should've waited for the mods to organize the election. But, like I said, the system isn't working, and we need to fix it. I don't think there's anything wrong with a non-RO/mod organizing the election, especially if the proposal was up for a month and the mods hadn't started it.

Then you can make your own UI.

on IRC, you identify posts implicitly a lot more often (e.g. if there are two conversations going on at the same time, often one will have pings on every line, the other won't)

Anonymous
@AdmBorkBork That's kind of how I feel now. It got very frustrating that the community sent a clear message about what we wanted done, but nothing was being done.

@ais523 Here, if people use the reply feature, you can hover on a post to get the parent and children highlighted too.
That's why I reply. (Most of the time...)

@Dennis I've edited the nomination post to make it more clear that I personally don't have the authority to instate new room owners, but rather the 4 chosen through the election will be submitted to the moderators and current room owners for approval and instatement. Is that more acceptable?

fwiw, another of my problems is that pings clear far too slowly

@ais523 You click on the number on your user profile.

on IRC, merely loading the tab with the chat in will clear all pings from it

6:43 PM
Or they auto-clear when you post.

no need to click on numbers or the like

@ais523 But here it lets you see who has pinged you.

@AdmBorkBork There's a middle ground between not sanctioning an election and nuking it from orbit.

@ais523 Wouldn't that make it hard to find a message you were pinged in a while ago?

If you want to make a simpler UI, feel free to write a TNB2IRC bot.
Please share it if you do.

@ETHproductions the entire message tends to get highlighted in red, you can scroll up to find it (and a line gets drawn across the chat at the point where you looked away)
some clients also copy all messages pinging you to a separate tab

@ais523 That's what those lines are...
@ais523 SE chat does that too.

on SE, you can read a message pinging you, then get an email about it a couple of days later because you didn't manually clear the ping

But only uncleared ones.
@ais523 /a couple of days/30 minutes/s
@ais523 You can disable the email feature if you like.

@wizzwizz4 My notification email window is 3 hours, I thought that was the minimum?

well I don't check my email every half-hour :-P

6:46 PM
Oh... I thought you meant Notifications...
The email cron job is run less frequently IIRC.

@Mego That's better, yes. I still would have liked to sort details like Would it make sense to apply some policies similar to the moderator elections for this? out beforehand rather than having to say haha, nope to someone who "won" the election.
I guess there's no harm in letting the nominations proceed. In this stage, votes are meaningless anyway. I'd like to ask you to let us handle the election phase though.

@Dennis That's fine by me. I'm perfectly happy with passing off the responsibility for this election to the mods. I just wanted to get the ball rolling.

@Dennis You could still add those since it's early on (although I'd understand if you don't have the time or desire to deal with that right now)

Maybe in the RO election meta post, include the responsibilities the would-be RO will have

Speaking of chat...
Still trying to find someone to help with my new native Stack Exchange CHat client

@wat SECH?
Wat's that?

@DJMcMayhem True. I'll consult the others.

thoughts on me running for room owner?
(before I write my self-nomination)

@PhiNotPi who are you again

@GabrielBenamy can't tell if joke or genuinely asking

Anonymous
@PhiNotPi I'd support you

7:00 PM
@GabrielBenamy ... PhiNotPi is...
Well, the creator of QFTASM, for a start.

mostly joke. I'm not here enough to really know who anyone but the Super Big Talkers are

.. a function

@GabrielBenamy Am I a Super Big Talker?

I literally do not remember you from before today.

@GabrielBenamy ... <rant /> ... I wasn't here yesterday.

7:03 PM
I also get people mixed up when their usernames: start with the same letter, have groups of the same letters together, or are equally unreadable at first glance.
...It turns out I've actually starred one of your posts previously, so you have been here at the same time as me at some time in the past, I just don't remember.

@GabrielBenamy Mine's blue. The only people you could get me mixed up with are the local mods.
Unless (like me) you ignore the colour of things.

wait is that what blue means

@GabrielBenamy Or when people change their name. >.> ...

Or you're a mobile pleb like me

@AdmBorkBork You're one to talk :P

7:04 PM
@GabrielBenamy Yes. I'm not a cool Programming Puzzles & Code Golf mod though... :-(
But I am a Retrocomputing mod, and that's a pretty neat site too (though I'm biased).

@Mego (insert thatsthejoke.jpg here)
@wizzwizz4 Wait, is that what that means? Holy cow, how did I never figure that out?

@AdmBorkBork You have a very similar icon to... TimmyD?

Yeah, where is that Timmy guy? :P

May 13 '16 at 20:17, by TimmyD
@quartata AdmBorkBork is my gamer handle

timmyd was killed by a handlebar. the handlebar has now replaced him in his entirety.

@AdmBorkBork ... *repairs mind*
<explanation>It was blown.</explanation>

@AdmBorkBork I tried doing that but I muddyfish is so much easier to read and identify as me

cmc: given a bunch of messages with date/time stamps and the number of stars they have, output their order on the starred message board

@GabrielBenamy Actually, that could be a decent regular challenge.

I'm currently adding new pattern detection to my inpaint implementation. This is a failed attempt at reconstruction a (colored) picture of a rose. It looks pretty artsy though.

@muddyfish you were blue eyed beast, right?

7:10 PM
@AdmBorkBork I'd have to know what the actual algorithm is though

@DJMcMayhem and then I stopped

@GabrielBenamy I have not even the slightest clue what the algorithm is

wrote a simple self-nomination: meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/11328/2867 might edit it some more later

A: How does the repositioning of starred messages work?

balphaJust like the "hot questions" on the Q&A sites, it's based on the Hacker News formula. Starred messages are sorted in descending order by Stars ----------- (Age + 2)1.5 where Age is the message age in minutes. So there's indeed a time decay factor (e.g. a 20-minute old message with 5 stars ...

ninja-downvote right there, oh well (edit: I'm probably not going to mention my candidacy further to avoid spamming y'all)

7:15 PM
Should I turn it into a sandbox post, then?

@PhiNotPi who would downvote you?
I got a downvote too, I wish they would say why

@GabrielBenamy I would say I lurk more than actually talk, although I've been here for quite a while (5 years)

@GabrielBenamy I'd say go for it. It feels like a pretty simple challenge without the "unless content changes, make no adjustment" rule, so that may need to be accounted for. Maybe the input should be as three or four (chronologically contiguous) blocks, and the output is the starboard at the end of each of those blocks?

7:31 PM
lol

This is a demo of the new "low quality" mode for my inpainter. The image is about 2MP and processing time is reduced several orders of magnitude compared to it's big brother. This took about 10s to process.

Green = no image information

wow

@mınxomaτ So your program just gets the "lines" of the green image and from that reconstructs the bottom image?

Yes

Dang, dude, that is super cool and impressive.

7:36 PM
Do I sense tonnes of fourier transforms?

No.

huh, how'd you do it then?

It uses luminosity, brightness and color differences as a sort of "force" input for a variably blurry brush (either circular or linear).
It's the caveman method compared to my exemplar-based implementation.

I think if I were to combine this with butteraugli and JPEG, it could achieve impressive image compression rates.
