sigh I'm never going to get used to going to flag something and not being able to because some robot has got there before me

1:32 AM
@ArtOfCode or when you go to flag something and some robot used up all your flags hours ago.

@YvetteColomb artofcode is talking about metasmoke flagging blatant spam on his behalf
wait a second, @ArtOfCode are posts being autoflagged on your behalf on hardware recommendations? you're a moderator with binding spam flags there

@Andy That, fortunately, tends not to happen with this system. Not enough spam.
@dorukayhan nope, nor open source. I took those off the list.
That said, I'd be happy to trust it with that.

Rob
@ArtOfCode I think no matter how good it gets, there should always be at minimum one human confirming the flag. Otherwise we're going to spam nuke an unsuspecting user and it'll be completely invisible.

@dorukayhan thnx

Rob
Invalid flags are fine because it can be corrected. Incorrect nuking is another can of worms

1:44 AM
@Rob our system can't nuke users, just to clarify. It could nuke posts, if we let it.

Rob
Right, sorry - that's what I meant

Generally, I tend to agree. On the other hand, at 99.98% accurate or more, do two incorrectly nuked posts (which are probably fairly terrible posts anyway) matter so much when compared to 9,998 spam posts that humans haven't had to see?
We now mandate 99.90% accuracy at minimum, so that ratio is at worst ten incorrect to 9,990 spam.

Rob
I'd be inclined to say yes, they do matter. For the same principle it's better to let ten guilty people walk free than to imprison one innocent person.

@Rob that... can also be argued, but I take your point. We could probably implement it to cast, say, 4 or 5 spam flags automatically, and the remaining two only after someone confirms it's a true positive.

Rob
@ArtOfCode That I'm all for :)

I'd hate to put in a rule for female first names but I'm guessing it would be a fairly reliable heuristic (at least when coupled with 1-rep accounts)

@tripleee not ugly really, the next best thing would be to convert the file to a list which would be more messy

@angussidney if you were able to check the list in memory you would avoid even going into the git handler
maybe a further refactoring would be to make a separate class for these black- and whitelists and encapsulate things that way

8:04 AM
@tripleee I don't think that would be reliable, remember that there is a million other posts which we don't see which would have a female first name for the user
@tripleee why do you need to do it through git? All you need to do is run a bash grep through python on blacklisted_*.txt

@angussidney ugh, that's unattractive too
the code which writes out the added entry currently simply appends to the file, but reading and writing it back out would be the natural solution here IMHO
but then you are pretty deep inside the git handler already at that point

why is fiverr.com blacklisted? that seems a bit harsh

we had a load of spam from there a while back

@ArtOfCode 'restore credidentials' - as in fill the DB with fake ones and log in with them?

@angussidney effectively, yeah. Encrypt a password, then set all email and password fields to my email/encrypted password combo, and I can log in with that

11:16 AM
@ArtOfCode 28 hits in metasmoke, though many not in URL links; 20 are TP

@tripleee that's the one

4-5 a month doesn't sound like "a load"

More than usual. Could probably be removed now, if you feel like it

the problem with a monolithic heuristic like that is that individual blacklisted domains probably offer a high TP rate but there could still be pockets of massive FPs
@ArtOfCode I'm undecided really, that's why I want to discuss this
do we think 20/28 is good enough? as part of a heuristic with otherwise good TP rate (4501/4621 overall)?
that's 71% vs 97%

owen@JESS:~/ws/SmokeDetector$ git blame blacklisted_websites.txt | grep fiverr
4cb17641 (Undo1                 2016-10-03 17:11:04 -0600 634) fiverr\.com/\w+

11:23 AM
(also the latest TP is weird, it was flagged again when an answer was posted and somebody marked that as TP, while previously the same post was marked FP ... we should have some way to notice when this happens, too)
@ArtOfCode that's the commit which moved old blacklist items to blacklisted_websites.txt

@tripleee it's not great... I'd probably nuke it
@tripleee yeah, I just found out

@ArtOfCode I just spent an 8 hour car trip reading about Rails, I'm certainly impressed about how good many aspects of ruby and Rails are in comparison to Python and Django, but there are some aspects where I prefer pythons 'explicit over implicit' principal

@angussidney The best bit of Rails is how often you can type something that sounds right and it just works, instead of having to google "how do I fubar a D-baz in Python"
@tripleee if we're being pedantic... you missed the closing slash

*Sorry, I

@ArtOfCode that's trad ed syntax
ed is the standard editor

@tripleee blame autocorrect and my bad typing on that one

@tripleee However: sed: -e expression #1, char 11: unterminated `s' command

11:29 AM
@ArtOfCode sure, if you're not satisfied with what was good enough for Ken in 1972

@tripleee nah, I prefer sed

@ArtOfCode over Emacs even?

@tripleee put it this way:
~/ws/SmokeDetector$ emacs
The program 'emacs' can be found in the following packages:
 * emacs24
 * emacs24-nox
 * e3
 * emacs24-lucid
 * jove
Try: sudo apt install <selected package>

seriously, jove? they are crazy to offer that as an alternative to the real thing

what about the x in title vs x in body division of reasons? it means as long as they put stupid stuff both in the title and the body, they are very likely to get autoflagged, but this also suggests a pretty simple way to stay below the threshold ...
