@ArtOfCode You don't customer support well if that's your attitude. The correct way to solve any problem is more reboots, until it's time for you to go home. Then it's the next guy's problem. ;)

@Andy Huh. I always figured the best way to support your customers was to blame something out of your control and claim there's nothing you can do about it, then subsequently do precisely nothing to solve it.
cough Virgin Media cough

That's a close second. Usually reserved for the ones that yell louder.

@Andy So what do I do to actually get good customer support? Give them the silent treatment and then blame them for not working out the problem on their own?

Recovered from WebSocketConnectionClosedException: Connection is already closed.

4:42 PM
@ArtOfCode You cannot
You can immediately make legal threats and read up on the regulations

But that's sensible

@ArtOfCode I once called my telco provider and had a thorough explaination ready for how much they owe me per day the outage remained
Mysteriously, even after they said they would book me a tech for 2 months from then, suddenly a tech had time to come in less then 4 hours

Aye, but you have to actually have an outage for that to happen
I'm still here, so my Internet is clearly working

What do you have?
Just slow service?

I have a router that's completely inadequate for the number of devices that need to use it

4:45 PM
Buy a new router?
Here a router is something you buy when you get 'net.

Recovered from WebSocketConnectionClosedException: Connection is already closed.

@Magisch In theory, yeah, but it's complicated. The landlord is the named party on the contract, so we have to do everything through them. The router we have is ISP-provided, and the ISP said it would be adequate despite being told in advance how many devices it would need to support. A new router is going to cost £130+, which we can't pay and the landlord won't, so now we're trying to persuade Virgin that they're guilty of false advertising so they'll buy us a new router.
So far, we've managed to get an offer of £50 out of them.

mhm
I have a router for 20 quid
was on a sale

Yeah, but that supports what, 10 devices max? We have 35.

I'm using it with like 5

4:48 PM
plus it needs to be a cable router, not a DSL router
which are more expensive

Mine is a cable router
screw wifi and dsl
I could get dsl here but its like 3x slower and more expensive then what I have

"cable" as in "the incoming connection is over a coax cable instead of an RJ11"
not as in "not wifi"
So I'm working on two solutions... one, continue trying to persuade them to pay the full router cost. Two, use the £50 to make some convoluted network setup that's not ideal but does at least work

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Manually reported answer: How to improve performance of map that loads new overlay images by Francisco on stackoverflow.com (@dorukayhan)

So currently I'm looking at a basic router with passthrough routing, plus a switch that I can wipe and customise the firmware on to make it into a caching DNS server, plus two more basic low-capacity routers to actually serve the devices.

@ArtOfCode Can you get all that for under 130 pounds?

@Magisch I can get it all for under £50, so it fits within their offer

Hmm.

It's not ideal because it involves about a week of work re-writing firmware and setting the network up, then I've gotta support the custom firmware.

How many people are this? Is 80 pounds such a game breaker?

4:56 PM
@Magisch 7 students
i.e. broke people

In that week you could earn more money fixing other students computer problems in less time

@Magisch ah, but I couldn't, because the university does free IT support

whenever I'm broke and need stuff thats what I do
Damn the luck

Last time I went home, one of my parents' friends had some computer issues that she was going to hire me to fix, which would have lead onto more work and actually quite a bit of cash, but that hasn't yet materialised.

@ArtOfCode I found that upper middle class old people pay significant sums of money to fix easy problems

5:00 PM
Exactly what that would have been, yeah

Like "100 euro for installing my new graphics card"

Recovered from WebSocketConnectionClosedException: Connection is already closed.

takes all about a screwdriver and 2 minutes

I was looking at £50 for less than an hour's work, plus some good recommendations to other friends with computer problems who'd pay similar rates

I hope on your behalf that it comes through

5:01 PM
Aye, we'll have to see where that's got to.

My aunt has a friend

That said, my landlord don't have any IT support - and they have a small office and 60+ houses full of technologically incapable students to support - so I could offer my contracted services.

Who designed a service in ancient access to scrape court websites for a publisher that takes recent judgements and publishes them
And now they're so dependent on it, he charges over 200 eur per hour for fixes

Legal extortion! :D

He's made a very comfortable living for the last 10 years working like 12-15 hours a week for this publisher

5:04 PM
I also know a couple people who work from home who need websites... might contact them about it, given that I already have the software to do it, it would be about two hours work, and I can charge stupidly high rates for it

And they're a giant corp so somehow the division can't get a budget to rewrite that
There are lots of opportunities for IT people to make decent side money

Rails is good like that. I wrote a site a few months ago, then realised how easy it would be to turn it generic so that I could just keep reusing it over and over

@Undo Ah. Not quite such a viable strategy over here...

Yeah, I got kinda lucky

I was designing a small app for a guy in my company a while ago, and they asked me some questions about it so I tried to show them the source
considering its ms access I was like this is almost plaintext surely they can grasp it faster from that then me explaining

5:09 PM
Given that I'm the only developer in my family for about 20 places sideways and a 4 generation span up/down, and all

SO is a blessing and a curse

@Magisch that's just it - I write things, then my family say "hey that's useful how does it work", and I think "it's Python, it's basically English, surely they'll understand it" and show them the source, and get blank stares.

When I'm on here I always feel so unskilled and insignificant between all the people making six figures with 20+ years experience as expert consultant and whatnot

And then you come into this room and find a bunch of youngsters bumbling along and somehow making it work and suddenly you feel like a genius
4

I'm also a youngster, mind :p

here's a regex that matches smokey's websocket errors which you can then put into a userscript that moves all messages matching a certain regex to a specific room: ^Recovered from `WebSocketConnectionClosedException: Connection is already closed\.`$
@hichris123 ^

That's way too much work for me. ;)

That's the SE socket, right?

Yeah, realtime feed.

11:13 PM
Dear @StackOverflow users, You may experience WebSocket errors over the next hour as we beat the hell out of them in the name of science.

I have a terrible idea.

@hichris123 socvr wrote such a userscript. even though the regex(es) and the destination room are hardcoded, those can simply be replaced with something dynamic

@Undo this was yesterday. It may be worth asking if it's resolves at this point

@Andy Yeah, I wonder if this is actually their problem or an us problem.

11:20 PM
There have been a couple people in here mentioning web socket issues today.

11:43 PM
If my theory is correct, we'll be seeing the next one of those errors at 23:46:42ish

yup
02:46:39 AM

Off by -4 seconds. Acceptable margins.

So what is your theory?

So we're seeing one of those errors every 7 minutes, plus a few seconds.

ah (what's so special about 7, I wonder)

11:48 PM
I don't know if that helps us diagnose anything, but who knows.
Okay, let's get this straight. Nothing changed on our side, right? Nobody changed the connection code to knock it out every 7 minutes?
Nothing relevant changed on my server.

It can be on the host of your server.

so, it must be an SE issue

I mean, nick tweets about websocket science and the very next day, websockets break. Coincidence, likely not.
