@Cerbrus totally agree. I don't think it needs to be available for people in socvr, it's better for the smaller sites where people are not always in chat.

Aww

@ArtOfCode Got another 6 blacklisted websites coming

I make a movement to keep all unwashed small mammals dressed in human clothing from the room... really lowers the tone here cc@Kyll

Is linking to one metasmoke tp'd report enough validation that a website has been used to spam and needs to be blacklisted?

But I'm a big mammal. Not dressed in human clothing, either.

@Magisch for me, yeah. Well, for me, I just trust that you've done your research, but a link is probably a good idea.
@Cerbrus it's a good idea, but it's also not very easy to do. I don't think CE gives us access to user activity data.

8:17 AM
@Cerbrus precisely and you have big teeth, I respect those

@ArtOfCode If that's the case, well, that sucks -.-
FR for CE :P

@ArtOfCode I always check the website itself, check its not just a mislinked blog, check that its trying to scam/sell a product agressively, and in my PR I always provide 1 confirmed MS report per website as link

...though having said that, I'm not sure chat gives us that data without scanning back through transcripts, which is not an efficient enough solution.

Is that a sufficient workflow?

@ArtOfCode I honestly have no idea. Would be great if it were accessible
There's a last seen on a chat user's profile. Can't you obtain those?

8:21 AM
Alternative solutions welcome - we could restrict notify to smaller sites, perhaps? Though I'm not sure that's a good solution either.
@Cerbrus nice find, let me check

@ArtOfCode This for example is one of these pull requests. Do I need/could improve that?

CI on abcfb48 succeeded.

@zaq your chrome extension is popular is it ok to pin it in the faq of scovr?

@ArtOfCode I'd be happy with that. The notification is pretty pointless in SOCVR.

@Magisch those are fine

8:23 AM
I actually pinged all of the users being notified, an hour ago. Only 1 (that was active at that time) responded.

@ArtOfCode rene is wanting to pin zaq's extension in the socvr faq, that should solve it for pings in there and I agree lock it down

@ArtOfCode I started recently to systematically blacklist spammy websites used in spam here. I don't want to create more work for SD admins then necessary

tpu- by Magisch

@Cerb I'm working on it. That last seen data is available to scrape, so I'm writing the feature into CE now, and then we can update the submodule and use it for SD.

8:34 AM
@ArtOfCode Perhaps with that we could also make a charcoal ping feature where someone can opt into getting pinged for all reports in charcoal HQ if they've been active in chat in the past 5 minutes

Possibly
I suspect that list might get a bit long

Well if its only recently active people only a couple could be pinged every time, right?
depends on how expensive that data is to scrape

@Magisch As long as spam is being caught, you really don't need to check for adding sites to the blacklisted websites list. Closing that PR because 4/5 are already in the pattern matching list, so it makes it even more redundant.

@hichris123 Shall I only add websites to the blacklist that don't pattern-match?

Yeah. Generally, as long as a post is not manually reported, there's no need to add a site to the blacklist. Unless it's being repeatedly used and only being caught by e.g. link at end.

I thought a catch for "blacklisted website" is more information then just "pattern matching website" since the first means "This was definitely used in spam before" and the second only "This could be fishy"

Eh. If it's in pattern matching, that means a regex matches the domain -- any further attempts to match it in another rule would just be redundant.

@Magisch I see it's already been mentioned on GitHub, but I'll mention it here too. Some of these are already caught by pattern matching RegEx. Is there a way to improve the regex to capture more of these (and the previous batch of 5) instead of watching just for these domains? Domains are cheap and easy to replace. The names here look fairly generic too.

Hey guys!

@Tunaki Hey! :)

Quick question to anyone who is listening and knows about the chat API Smokey uses. Does it handle very long messages (> 500 chars)?

zaq
8:46 PM
@Tunaki It posted this, so the answer is yes.
However, one needs the optional second parameter in send_message(text, False) for this to happen. See github.com/Manishearth/ChatExchange/blob/…

Ah but that is on multiple lines
On multiple lines, it seems the maximum character length isn't applied

zaq
Yes. The restriction on 500 chars applies to normal messages only.

But ok, I guess it doesn't :D thanks for pointing me at the source code.

zaq
@Tunaki Notice ` and length_check ` there, which is a user-supplied parameter.
Smokey sends long messages by setting it to False.

9:01 PM
Yep, but then it assumes the text is going to be on multiple lines. Else it's going to error anyway when it tries to send it.

zaq
I don't see where exactly the decision between formats is made, at the POST request level it boils down to the same thing, github.com/Manishearth/ChatExchange/blob/…
Posting to 'chats/{room_id}/messages/new' with link text. Perhaps on server side the message is automatically made multi-line when it's longer than 500 chars.

Hmm. I'll study the code, thanks :).

No, I was wrong... trying to post a message to chats/id/messages/new with text longer than 500 chars results in HTTP 500.
How does Smokey post multiline messages, then?

9:19 PM
No idea. But whatever generated this text generated with new lines to begin with.

zaq
@Tunaki Yes, this is what I found by experimenting with console. If you send text with \n in it (not at the end though), it goes through as multiline, regardless of length.
So, to summarize: if text contains a newline, then send_message(text, False) will post it to chat as multiline message, whatever the length. If it doesn't, there will be HTTP 500 for text.length > 500. And if one uses send_message(text) without the second parameter, CE will not even try posting when text.length > 500.

False report, but it was bumped by actual spam. :)
Hm, why wasn't that reported as mostly non-Latin?

@zaq Yep :). I have my own chat API written in Java, and I'll implement that weird case of sending single-line messages > 500 chars. Sounds fun :D (and a lot harder than it looks, if you think about formatting and links and such)

zaq
I don't understand how you can do this... the SE server won't accept such a message.
That's what HTTP 500 was about.

9:28 PM
Split in (well formatted) chunks of < 500 chars :)
and post each chunk as a message

zaq
I see. Then the throttle will be a bit of an issue.

That is already handled. When you're throttled, the error message tells you how many seconds you need to wait before retrying.
So you can wait that amount, and start spamming again :D

Not on prod

Yeah, local prod environment, 16.04, I've been using MDB for a while.
