7:00 PM
@MetaEd won't that depend on how long they run the test?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Sure, but it can't be 50 W, or my food would take ages to warm up, which it doesn't.

Hence it will be less than the energy used by the appliance, which includes energy to drive the controls and display, the timer, the turntable, and energy lost in heat within the radio transmitter.

> Please join me in participating in the [company name]'s wellness program this year to primarily improve your health and contribute to the [company name]'s financial sustainability.

@MetaEd That's exactly what I thought.

@Cerberus try measuring the output of a lightbulb and see what your meter says.
what kind of meter is it
@Kitḫ heheh

7:01 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yeah I should try that. It says my computer uses up 120 watt doing nothing in particular, screen off.

26 mins ago, by MetaEd
Like this? http://www.cresta.nl/index.php?Itemid=2&option=com_zoo&view=item&category_id=44&‌item_id=473&lang=en

My laptop uses much less, maybe 10 or so; I think both figures would be in the right range at least.

What does the meter give for amperage?

Amperage. shudders

Meter says 10W for my 10W lamp.
So that is correct.
@MetaEd Oh, I've taken it out already.

7:07 PM
I mean specifically what does it give for amperage when running the microwave oven at full power?

Ah OK.
Let me try that.

@Cerberus remember that wattage is power, not energy. it's an instantaneous measurement.

Is it a bad idea to run it at full power empty?
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yes, but what does that imply here?

@Cerberus redirect to Skeptics XD

Heh.

7:09 PM
@Cerberus It means that if the "wattage" of the microwave is determined by doing a certain amount of work in a certain amount of time, the instantaneous measurement of that power will be the average
So, essentially, the 900W in your microwave's rating is not telling you how much electricity it draws on a constant basis.
unlike for a lightbulb, where it IS telling you that.

@MetaEd 46 A.
223 V, at 50 Hz.

46A???

Uhuh.

@Cerberus no way

It would seem high, wouldn't it?

7:12 PM
4.6A is probably what it really is
no wait

I would reset the thing to start with. There is supposed to be a red reset button.

Let's see, A = c/s, V = j/c, so A*V = W?
@MetaEd I've already reset it several times.

Roughly speaking, W = VA.

is this for full power?

7:13 PM
But there is a power factor.

Right, W.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yes, at 900W.
@MetaEd Oh shit, that might have to do with it.
I keep forgetting what that power factor does.

900A at 223V is 4W.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Right, I understand that. But looking at the meter I should see all kinds of values that average at the avarage wattage, right? But I kept seeing low values. And the kWh was way off too.

@MetaEd did you get your As and Ws right there?

I think not.
You mean 4A*223V=900W.

7:17 PM
223 × 4 = 892, no?
right.

You said 900A.

Let me just fix that.
hmm. Apparently let me not fix that. * grumble *

user19161
OMG you guys are still at it.

900W at 223V is 4A.

> Don't let poets lie to you
good advice, but from a poet...

7:19 PM
In any case, I thought the power factor was just the current watt divided by maximum watt.

Any chance the microwave is being "smart"? Dialing the actual power output down?

bah. let poets lie to you.
a poet's lies are likely to be better than most other forms of truth

@MetaEd By that much?
So could this power factor have anything to do with it?

OMG these wellness "activities" are absurd.

7:24 PM
@Kit do tell

do you get a free in-chair back massage?
those are amazing

I filled out the little questionnaire, now I have a list of videos to watch.

@Kitḫ What the hell are you doing?

The first one was a doctor telling me that even though I am a social drinker, I am not immune to drinking and driving.

user19161
@Kitḫ Common sense.

7:26 PM
I didn't fill out the questionnaire and now I'm eating a marshmallow shaped as a small icecream cone

The second was the same (overweight) doctor telling me how I should look for little ways to increase my daily activity.

Is "wellness" the same thing it means here, some silly thing about saunas and massage for girls?

user19161
@Kitḫ Common sense.

@Cerberus What? That sounds great!

I rest my case.

7:27 PM
Now I can't get the stupid window to close so I can check it off.

Have you tried wiggling your little toe?

I wouldn't expect the power factor to be less than 0.5, probably closer to 0.8 or 0.9.

> You’ve told us about how much you eat at a meal as well as your snack habits and how you feel about eating.
Uh, no I didn't.

> OK, honestly, we've been watching you

But what could be happening is that your microwave is generating harmonics back through the meter and causing it to misregister.

7:30 PM
@MetaEd I think it says 0.01 a lot of the time.

Power factor of .01?

Yeah.
I have noticed that with other things as well.

user19161
@MattЭллен Sounds like Soviet Russia.

Well, that's what doctors are all about.

Ok. So the meter could be bad, or it's equally possible that the microwave power supply is putting noise on the power line which confuses the meter.

7:31 PM
Hmmm...
But I think the power factor is that low with other appliances too.
For my lamp it says PF 0.64.

Bjork channelling a cockney

When I turn on the microwave at 900 W, while the meter is at the same place as when I used it to measure the microwave, but now measuring the lamp, the PF stays around 0.64–0.66.

Frsck!

No. Stack trace from an error report.

7:37 PM
oh

How often do you eat red meat? Never, monthly, weekly, daily.
sigh

never monthly
almost daily

Sometimes daily, then not for a couple of weeks.
I don't know really.

sounds like never to me!

picks randomly

7:39 PM
yeah, leftovers, right?
and does "eating red meat" mean "There were a couple meatballs in my spaghetti" or "I ate a plate full of steak"

Does it mean "ate less than 3 ounces per serving which is really perfectly healthy"?

where is the "I'm eating some right now" option?

And your answers will be put into your secret employee file where they will determine how to curb your pay raises due to your unhealthy lifestyle

And the "I'm bathing in the blood of a freshly butchered bull" option?
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Oh don't get me started.

@Kitḫ but are you EATING it

Q: Question form of "Should have"

MeysamWhat is the correct way of making the question form of a sentence containing "should have"? Considering the following example: I should have told him. Which question form would be correct? Should I have told him? Should have I told him? Did I have to tell him?

"Those" is like "hos", but without any sexual relations

Hey, it's not my country that doesn't have the resources to kick off two wars at a time anymore.

Trepanning, also known as trephination, trephining or making a burr hole, is a surgical intervention in which a hole is drilled or scraped into the human skull, exposing the dura mater in order to treat health problems related to intracranial diseases. It may also refer to any "burr" hole created through other body surfaces, including nail beds. It is often used to relieve pressure beneath a surface. A trephine is an instrument used for cutting out a round piece of skull bone. Evidence of trepanation has been found in prehistoric human remains from Neolithic times onward. Cave paintin...

@RegDwightѬſ道 No, we put paid to that.

@Kitḫ Yeah, especially Florida.

At some point. But not today.

8:48 PM
@MetaEd Does the article cover trepanning for gold?
@Kitḫ Well, you can't be level 35 without fighting dragons. They find you from early on.
What, do you run away every time you see one?

They don't "find" you unless you do the Bleak Falls Barrow mission.
Otherwise, you can skip gaily through all the other stuff without being harassed by dragons.
It is much easier to get the shouts that way.

I dunno, what's the point if you're not gonna fight dragons?

Oh, I'll get to it eventually.

Pigs get a bad rap. Look at "Angry Birds".

Are there pigs in the bird game? Then what's the point?

The pigs are the enemies that you must defeat.

Oh, no!
And you're good or evil depending on whether you side with the pigs or the birds?
It is like Birds all over.

No, you must be the birds.

Aww.

11:07 PM
It's subtly anti-carnivorous. The pigs are starving, so they're stealing birds eggs. They should probably just eat grass, or something.

How racist.
I prefer calling anything racist, whether it is actually about races or not—just so you know.
Like discriminating against women or gays.

I see.

And sexism I call being over-sexed. At least that would be a fun way of mocking the uneducated here, who call anything with "too much sex" sexist.

Heh.

And I believe I have already mentioned that I call anyone who could possibly be discriminated a "minority", and "challenged".

Q: Basic questions are not so basic

JSBᾶngsIt has come up in other threads that we have a lot of "basic" or "lowest common denominator" questions. However, a few myths about this need to be put to rest. First, we do have a general reference close reason, and we do use it. Questions which really are as basic as they seem can be closed, an...

This site is starting to look like philosophy.se: of the first 8 questions on the main page, 6 are closed.

11:49 PM
Are they interesting questions or can they be made interesting?
One problem that I suppose can come up for any Q&A site is that a lot of the commonly asked interesting questions get answered. So you might expect to get fewer interesting questions, while the baseline of uninteresting questions would not change. Hence you would start to see more questions closed as uninteresting.
This makes me think of the old saw about twelve step groups. After awhile it becomes hard for them to find enough drunks, and the leadership all falls off the wagon.
So is this type of site self-sustaining, or is it self-limiting?

@MetaEd True: but those questions should already be closed as duplicates (I'm assuming users wanting to ask a question has already been answered, if they find it, will not ask a random uninteresting question instead).
So I think your problem exists, but I'm not sure it manifests itself in questions that are too basic.

I think there will always be a lot of questions about basic vocabulary, word endings, and so on, say from ESL perspective, which will be uninteresting but not duplicates.
Questions that really are better answered by taking an English class than by asking a cunning linguist.

Unless the linguist can add more information than the asker asks for if taken literally.

... because the person is not really looking for the interesting answer, just for the "correct" answer.
