as an RO, how do I clear stars?

Only moderators can clear stars AFAIK

@AlexA. nopers
right click on the arrow under the item on the starboard and press cancel stars

ok

@Quill huh, I never knew that arrow existed
Why was the memes post locked?

12:26 AM
> This question exists because it has historical significance, but it is not considered a good, on-topic question for this site, so please do not use it as evidence that you can ask similar questions here. This question and its answers are frozen and cannot be changed.

@quartata ._. I can read that. But are we killing off all memes now? If yes, why?

because... they're memes?

what's wrong with memes?

are we talking about the meta question or a main site question?

main site question?

12:50 AM
@quartata wait what no

Uhhh did something happen to Kenny?
I was just about to ping him but he doesn't show up in /pingable and I can't find him on Users
Oh wait oops he changed his username
Anyways... @LeakyNun turns out the LZString demo counts characters not bytes
After some experimentation lzstring seems to be consistently worse than bb96 byte-wise so I reverted that
@Dennis Can you pull cinnamon gum real quick?

Pulled.

Dammit, I should learn to check CI first...

I have a string with only 9 different characters. In light of compression, what's the best way I could compress it?

Depends
What's the string?

1:00 AM
varying strings

There isn't a consistent good method (especially when it's that short). I don't think base conversion would reduce something that was 9 bytes by anything

These strings can be much longer than 9 characters. I'm saying the character set is limited to do 9 characters

@Fatalize I know you've deleted the challenge, but I just tried letting my computer brute force overnight and it did manage to find a valid A, B pair at 200 digits long :P

@Dennis pull one more time?

@quartata the best thing I could come up with is mapping the chars to numbers in the charset, splitting into two-digit pairs, and parsing as base-9 ints

1:07 AM
I should really enable package caching on Travis this takes way too long
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Oh I totally misunderstood
Then you can just interpret the string as being in base 9 and convert it to base 256

but that would require bigints

? No?

what if the string is really long? I can't do builtin base conversion because the number would overflow

I didn't say use builtin base conversion
That wouldn't do what you want

Okay, so I have to implement base conversion myself

1:29 AM
o_O I have no idea
why did you remove it? :P

IDK the exact reason why, but I think at least part of it is some users were being rude to Alex.
Plus it is really old.
That's atleast what triggered this (I assume)

Maybe the mods are going fun police ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

mod abuse 11... but in reverse

Has anyone tried creating and tried using the max (or an extremely large) -sized swap space on Linux, Windows, etc?

I wouldn't say fun police. I'd say moving slightly towards what would be considered normal for the rest of the SE network.

1:34 AM
"many memes of" is normal for the rest of the SE network

Yeah, that is true. Who knows, maybe it won't be locked forever.

Maybe
I personally wouldn't be surprised. We seem to be making a turn in a different direction, be it good or bad.

It was being horrifically (over|mis)used, so I'm glad we're moving away from it
5

A meme or memes in general?

@DJMcMayhem the meme that we aren't supposed to use anymore

1:39 AM
@Sp3000 I'm fine with moving away from that which is overused, but I feel that people will interpret "no more of meme X" entails then "no more of memes in general"

I wouldn't mind being the verbal beating bag, but it probably won't be much fun since I'm usually not here.

I don't think that would be the end of the world. Memes are funnier when they are a little less spread out.

@DJMcMayhem I mean the Alex one, but this also applies to a few others, like the avocado one

@miles I think their's a difference between saying in chat "Alex is wrong teehee so funny MEEMZ lol" and saying on main "Alex, how dare you close my question. You are always wrong and unfair."

4 hours ago, by Cᴏɴᴏʀ O'Bʀɪᴇɴ
It's almost impossible to make a meme whilst trying to make a meme
we should make a program anylize chat stars and see what connects them then find a connection that does not involve a current meme. That will be our new meme.

1:43 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I don't think that will happen, or at least I hope not. But we'll see

Sound like this:

Q: Predict whether a message will be starred or not in 50 bytes

DoorknobGiven an input of a string consisting of any message from our site chatroom taken from the list described and linked below, output either a truthy or a falsy value attempting to predict whether that message was starred or not in 50 bytes or less. You may use any truthy or falsy values, but they ...

Yeah, but use that to create a new meme

@Sp3000 I'm a pessimist in this case.

Hm k - I just think it'll happen naturally sooner or later, or at least should
As long as it's not forced - those ones aren't funny :/

@MartinEnder Nice!!!

1:46 AM

@DJMcMayhem Inspect element hacks?
wait hold up your not a mod how did you get that screen?
Ohhh. DJ McMayhem is Alex Sock Confiremed
Alex sock memes are still allowed right?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@LuisMendo No, I'm just trying to fix the current algorithm.

> The algorithm cannot be detected by regex.

@BaldBantha Haha, I'm glad you like that. I took it from xkcd and made it more stack exchange-ey.

could it be written in an xml-like language?

Feel free to put it in your bio if you want.

@DJMcMayhem I recall that from an xkcd... which one?

1:56 AM
Can the algorithm be generated by a grammar?

I guess I stand corrected

Anyone here have experience with emscripteiten

is that like german javascript

2:27 AM
@Sp3000 Yeah, pretty much. It was encouraging persistent bad behavior.

@Quill it is a C to JavaScript transpiler
@Doorknob so is the lock temporary, so new memes can rise, or permanent, no more memes?

Historical significance locks are permanent

so.. no more memes. nailed it

@AlexA. not even mods can take the lock off?

2:37 AM
@Upgoat They can. They just won't.
Really, it means that the lock won't ever expire, like other kinds of locks.

CMC: Matrix multiplication.

@El'endiaStarman I know it won't expire. I was just wondering if the mods were planning on taking it off after a while

What would happen if someone made a new one?

@LeakyNun Jelly: æ×

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ it would probably be downvoted into oblivion, and deleted hammered

2:38 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I would close it as a duplicate

@Doorknob Try doing that without the built-in

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ and then doorknob will send you a christmas card of a monkey throwing poop

but that wouldn't be like the other SE sites

#ifdef NEVER
0/10 variable name choice, this makes me think it will never be true

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ So?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ what, did you think the other mods don't send Christmas cards containing poop-throwing monkeys?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ SE CMs at our site proposal

Q: Is Ans considered a valid form of in

No NameWe haven't reached a complete consensus on whether or not Ans is permitted as a valid input format for TI-BASIC. We have this answer on "Default for Code Golf: Input/Output methods" with a slim majority support for its use, but I recently posted an answer to Approximation of e which used Ans as ...

What would you call a reverse map? E.g., an array of functions being called with an argument

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ you mean like: reversemap = (farray, ...args) => farray.map(f => f(...args)) ?

2:52 AM
Mapping an argument to an array of functions. Still a map of sorts.

idk maybe callEach or callAll or callWith?

sounds like a two dimensional map

why does git come with a shell ._.

To all: guess what trick I used xd

2:56 AM
> Character with code point A. If A is too large, convert to base 256 and turn each into a character.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Run it.

Then you'd know I'm not referring to the C command..

It copies fine for me, despite the null :/

@Sp3000 nice

2:58 AM
Although if you want an actual copy and paste trick, here you go: security.love/Pastejacking

Oh. I didn't try copying it

(oh, looks like everything but the null is copied, I see)

<html>
    <body>
        Copy the text below and run it in your terminal for totally not evil things to happen.
        </br>

        <p>echo "not evil"</p>
        <script>
            document.addEventListener('copy', function(e){
                console.log(e);
                e.clipboardData.setData('text/plain', 'echo "evil"\r\n');
                e.preventDefault(); // We want our data, not data from any selection, to be written to the clipboard
            });
        </script>
    </body>
That's nice.
and malicious.
potentially.

Yeah, the site's from a security researcher demonstrating that that's possible, if I remember right

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ any ideas for what template i should use for cheddar website

@Upgoat make your own, you sissy

G'night now!

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ hahahahaha, like I have the time ability. I'd rather use a website made my a professional designer, rather than one made by a goat with bad typing

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ night

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ bai

3:04 AM
Can anyone explain this?

@LeakyNun Hit debug and you'll see how it's parsed

@Sp3000 Not referring to that.

Not seeing a problem tbh

@Sp3000 Both produce the same output for Cz, but not for C+"a"z

The strings are different lengths, so the "a" is in a different place value for both

3:08 AM
I see.
Then which one is correct?

It's basically like saying [1, 0] and [2] are equivalent taken base 2, but [1,1,0] is not [1,2] since the extra 1 is worth a different value in each

Cook french fries or write challenge. Hmm

Depends what you mean by "correct"
@HelkaHomba Obvious response: French fries challenge

@Loovjo Want to be in a language: github.com/HelkaHomba/ThePeoplesPython

@HelkaHomba You should explain the challenge in chat, then make fries then make the challenge so I can FGITW it.

5 hours ago, by Helka Homba
For challenge: Given list of ints, e.g. 1 0 8 2 4 4, put + sign in between pairs that increase, and - in between pairs that decrease, and ? in between equal pairs. So 1-0+8-2+4?4 = 9?4

@HelkaHomba How does 1-0+8-2+4 evaluate to 9?

@LeakyNun because it doesn't -_- should be 11

@isaacg Bug: the MC, above can't be replaced with V

3:30 AM
@HelkaHomba Will the list contain at least one element?

yes

That'd be 33

@Doorknob Well, there's some pattern for the even and the odd, maybe you can use that

Right, it's *"io""ua" and then mapping x to x, _x
sm_Bd*"io""ua", there we go
So sm+\p@+\a+\osm_Bd*"io""ua"v is 27

nice

@Dennis delau (n.) - the name change "Kenny Lau" -> "Leaky Nun"
@Sp3000 My Pyth solution does multiple digits.

Yeah, asking cos I just noticed it does :P

-_-

It's 23 if the input's a single digit (remove sm at the beginning and v at the end).

3:54 AM
@Doorknob Can't golf it further.

29 for multiple digits: 'pq:~"aoioua"2/~m*{_W%}%+f=f+, Dennis could probably do better :P

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan The gap is getting smaller, but he's pretty close already...

@HelkaHomba haha, thanks for letting me know even though I probably won't answer it. I'm not that great at golfing.
@Dennis Its possible, though it won't be easy. Although you're getting rep about 2x as fast as him.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan With the rep cap, that depends pretty on much on him. He hasn't been too active lately. If he keeps that up...

Do you hit the rep cap every day?

:P

@LeakyNun It is the "normal" setting (on 1920x1080), but I getcha. You're the second person to mention that so I think I will make it bigger in future videos.

@HelkaHomba oh, alright
@HelkaHomba What mods do you have?

@LeakyNun none at all (in that series)

Poll: what's the golfiest natural language?

Depends how you define "golfiest" - e.g. a lot of languages probably wouldn't like the idea of being scored in UTF-8

Depends on what you measure in. Eastern languages carry a lot more information per character, but have a much larger dictionary.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan per character: yes, per byte: not really
@Sp3000 why not?

Exactly, that's my point.

English could theoretically be stored in base 27

5:56 AM
But then the question is, how do you store a "byte" of Chinese for example?

Because, e.g. Eastern languages would barely make use of the one-byte chars

UTF8

if one natural character was one byte, Chinese

@Quill that is precisely why we don't count a character as a byte

If you can count English in base 27, then I'm sure there is also a more convenient way to store chinese also.

5:58 AM
> Unicode currently has 74605 CJK characters.
(CJK = Chinese + Japanese + Korean)

Also kinda depends on how you're forming the sentences too, e.g. if you're dropping unnecessary letters, or if you're dropping whole words which can be inferred from context

Korean is pretty golfy too, the korean dictionary is smaller than Japanese and Chinese and the sentences are usually pretty small

swap the positions of v and l

6:05 AM
never mind <_<

Hello

@Quill I was going to compose a joke response with a lot of words with v/l swapped, but most of these are just variations of live/vile so this isn't very interesting :/

A vot of words are just lariations.
