Yeah . . . there's going to be maaaany meta posts about that for some time . . . facepalm

@Serg nope. just 1 >:-D

@Rinzwind just one if they all gonna be marked as dupe ;)
@Rinzwind how much were you affected by the way ?

would be funny if someone had loads of downvotes deleted and ask on meta "why did my rep go up by 40" :D
@Serg -330

Lucky you

5:13 PM
already got it back :=D

@serg you are not the top candidate when it comes to rep loss

@Serg I know 3 or 4 that lost 10k+ with 22k as the highest

@Videonauth i am sure i am not the top , just curious who was affected and how much

@Serg What was yours, btw?

@Rinzwind i am one of those who lost 10k

5:14 PM
fabby lost 17k

wow

and even he is not the top i saw some even harder cuts just not remember who

What i miss the most is the gold command-line badge :/

You'll get that back soon enough. :)

@Serg look at it like this: you now get the feeling a 2nd time to reach that landmark :D

5:19 PM
@Rinzwind well I remember who just didn't want to put names up, so can you remove it please

sure :=D
what is a "leptop"?

a laptop for leprechauns ?
xD

lol

@Serg Well if you want to know who lost how much, go to users-->reputation--> week--> last page

Tim

5:25 PM
that gives a rough figure.. they may have gained some back after that event

I would like y'all to change the topic.

It's like the Great Depression , except instead of stocks it was rep

user139252
I can change the topic!

user139252
Pokemon Go is an amazing beta!

dark souls 3 is a great game >:)

5:27 PM

Coffee is a great drink :p ( see ? topics are easy to change )

user139252
I've had plenty cups of coffee today.

tea rocks
coffee sucks

I have never seen a real "great" game on linux, nothing similar to Assassins creed, COD, .... you know what i am saying.., or did I miss sth ?

yes you have
I'll name 3: Planescape torment. Baldur's Gate. Neverwinter Nights.

5:29 PM
Is there such games for linux too 😲 ..

@SeverusTux the 3 I named run natively. Baldur's Gate is also on steam.

youtubing all of them ;p

PT is from 1992 but last I played it was in 2012. stll looked very good.

tropico 5, civilazation 5 xcom 1 & 2 there are many which run natively on windows, if you want to know which ones are avaiable on steam and running natively search for steam OS games

5:35 PM
@Rinzwind nah... nah... nah.... This is what you are saying ?

borderlands 2 as well runs on linux

user139252
Anyone with 14.04 available to try something right now?

16 here

user139252
I'm trying to install GIMP, and I'm getting an error saying that some packages cannot be verified...

user139252

user139252
Yep, that was it.

user139252
Thanks :D

Upvote it!

user139252
I did!

5:40 PM
!!

@Rinzwind nooo way...
All those you mentioned are some kind of "top-view" games (Well even Super-Mario is a great game ;p ) , I am asking for "Real" games, with extraordinary graphics.

Open your window

Ah,...., I don't have it anymore :( (windows)

Go out the door and look at the world.

ew , windows
oh, wrong type of windows
sorry

5:44 PM
@TheBrownOne gimp installed just fine for me.

@SeverusTux Minetest.

user139252
@Seth Yeah, I worked it out. The dinosaur pointed me towards a key issue.

@SeverusTux you got a lot to learn. graphics never make the game. the story does.
2

user139252
@Rinzwind This is what I always say.

5:48 PM
Yes, but thats not all of it.

But when both are good, then it's a win

Yes, "Both".. Its an "and" gate, 1 and 0 = 0.
Well , thats my personal opinion

@Serg nah. I can live with 2d graphics if the quests are good.
in general graphics drag down performance
I played load of online mmorpgs where lowering graphics was a sure-fire way to win in team quests

@Rinzwind yeah , if the plot is good, then graphics don't necessarily matter, but in case of something like "Alien Isolation" or "Far Cry 3 " , graphics and story combine together quite well. There's other games who have great graphics but are just. . .dull . . .
I guess , i like balance - ying and yang stuff

I do like it when boss enemies look good.
like in DS3... The "dancer" boss was truly amazing.

5:56 PM
I would say This is the "only" reason people duel-boot Ubuntu with windows , instead of using only Ubuntu .

--> great game wich as well runs natively on linux store.steampowered.com/app/286690/?snr=1_7_7_230_150_9

Linux F2P Moba: store.steampowered.com/app/263500/?snr=1_7_7_230_150_1

There are some good games on Steam.

yes there are
Ok I just saw Aberoth on steam.
A good story aint going save this o

@Videonauth wow... thats good :D

5:59 PM
the second one of those as well runs on linux natively
there are many very good games meanwhile (AAA ones) which run on linux as well

@Videonauth not gonna happen. copyright kills it for linux

the times are slowly changing

steam is going to be our gaming platform for the next few years.

what metro redux ?

@Videonauth by "natively " ,you mean without steam ??

6:00 PM
no but in linux without wine and such

ah...

oh wine is no longer relevant.
steam killed wine as a gaming platform
(and yes I know what I said there ;-) )

Perhaps one day we won't need wine at all , when everything will be in docker containers , and dependency hell will be a thing of the past and nothing but horror stories to tease young IT aficionados

wow firefox 47 is in the official repos now

@Serg s/docker containers/snap packages/

6:11 PM
Good call !

here is to hoping

Here's a more meta-ish question for you guys. What's a good "answers per day" amount ? What i mean is that i want to make my presence on the site more organized, scheduled. In the past it was " latch onto whatever question i see and answer it" , but now i want to make it smarter

questions don't follow a schedule ;)

@seth they had no issues with it at all

@Seth :D

6:14 PM
cool, I didn't think they would :)

me neither but they did say they were glad I asked first

Is Seth privy to some stats on the forums that is not available to the public?

I answer anything I can. When I hit 150 rep I hope it will float to 200
with the aim to not get too much over 200 so the next day I get some fallout from those answers making it easier to get to 200

@Serg actually I aim for 1-5 answers per day

@jokerdino no he made a comment about the reversal :+D

6:16 PM
I read something in the transcript but I can't remember what it was now.

Hmmm , that's a good approach. A good, quality answer can make somewhere between 2 - 3 upvotes, even better when accepted. So to reach 150 i'd probably need 3 - 4 answers

Well... beware of next "cleaning up" 😜 😝 😋

@Serg I believe it is a bit higher. Probably 5-6
You can get better traction though if the answes get accepted
not saying it is perfect but it got me to 125k :D

I suppose it worked for you, hehe :)

and aim for some bounties :=D

6:22 PM
I have problem with bounties :/ Whenever i look at the page with featured questions, it seems i can't answer any of them or have only slight idea about 1 or 2

stuck on 160 for today :D

I who what now?

A lot of bounties are offered for things that can't be done.

...Most of the time I only answer questions I have the feeling, they are "my" questions...

@Serg research them! :) there is a reason for the bounties

6:22 PM
@Rinzwind This must be only working for you ... my answer from yesterday was accepted and only got 1 upvote ! :P

@Seth can we get " smilies " on chat ?? I copy and paste them from qtox

@cl-netbox happens ;-) I need about 5, 6 NEW answers to get to 150

@JacobVlijm that's exactly the same feeling i have

@JacobVlijm well most of the questions are "yours" , or you will make it "yours" with some scripts ;-)

@cl-netbox some of my answers that are now on 10 or 20+ were zero for months.

6:23 PM
Jacob takes too much time per answer ;-)
not saying it is a bad thing for AU >:-D

@SeverusTux definitely not! I can (really) only answer questions I find interesting.
2
...same with my knowledge, I find it hard to learn if I am bored on the subject.

anyone knows which programm is called to show the cheat sheet (super key hold)

ohhhhhhhhhhh my top answer just made 400 upvotes <3

@Videonauth the overlay?

yeah

6:25 PM
@Videonauth hold it (the super)

@SeverusTux they are called emojies

Q: Frequent Message Manager - Easily store and send frequently used messages in chat?

Nathan Osman Screenshot About Have you ever said something in chat that made you think "I know I've said this many times before?" Perhaps you have a few common links that you reply to questions with on a frequent basis. Well now you can save yourself the trouble of digging them up everytime you nee...

@Rinzwind Tell me where, so we can make it 399 :)

@SeverusTux some of the questions me and jacob answer are quite easy , once you know ins and outs of tools such as xdotool or wmctrl or qdbus ( which i like a lot ) . The rest is just putting everything together into a script. That what makes a question "yours" , imho. I would hesitate with filesystem type of questions, because i am not qualified enough for those

@JacobVlijm checked it ... nearly all my last answers were accepted ... not more than 1 or 2 ... :)

6:26 PM
or nvidia questions

@Rinzwind that i know i would like to know which script programm is involved in showing it ;) so i can change it

oh sorry Misread
I doubt it is hardcodes. Maybe check "keyboard" short cuts?

@Rinzwind bastard..

@JacobVlijm D: what you never upvoted?
please dont upvote topics I post in chat :(((

6:28 PM
@Rinzwind I won't tell you :)

@Rinzwind the keyboad shortcuts wont give any hint sadly

@Videonauth it's part of unity

@Rinzwind Nono, seriously

you can edit the overlay if you want but you need to compile it

@Videonauth all bugs point to"unity"

6:29 PM
I know it because I added the Super + V line.

mhmmmm compiling it wouldnt be a problem
you have a link oto the source ?

> plugins/unityshell/src/unityshell.cpp

where would we be without jokerdino :=)

right here.

Just out of curiosity , @jokerdino how did you come up with the name ?

6:32 PM
that's a terrible story

we are waiting >:-D

I am not gonna tell it.

lol

@Videonauth it used to be here but it's not there anymore.
try bzr'ing the code and grep for any of the lines from the shortcut overlay.

just downloaded the tarball

6:35 PM
gonna get some sleep. cya

bye!
bbl too :)

Q: Unix vs Ubuntu?

PK-KillerIf you're using Ubuntu but have a question which is applicable (or you think it is) across distros is it considered best practice to post in Unix SE? Or is it more a case of the question being valid in both communities with an overlap in content?

@Zacharee1 yup... :/

Hi @Fabby ! :) How are you my friend ?

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, weird...
It doesn't want te Vorlon any more...
@cl-netbox :) How much did you lose?
Ouch! 20K?

6:50 PM
@Fabby 23.000 points !!! nearly all bounties ... and the accepts !!!

Bounties as well???

@Fabby YES !!!

Jeez, Louise!

@Fabby They should think about dropping that whole voting system !

@Fabby nice seeing you again Fabby !

> "Microsoft has published its own distribution of FreeBSD 10.3 in order to make the OS available and supported in Azure." - The Register, Microsoft has created its own FreeBSD. Repeat. Microsoft has created its own FreeBSD

@Serg :) Hi!
I've had enough writing documents for today...

O.O WTF is going on with Microsoft ? First they adopt bash, then FreeBSD

@Serg The normal Microsoft EEE strategy...

what's EEE ?
Also, any plans of running for mod elections ?

Eat everything else?

6:55 PM
o/ Fabby

I'm using freebsd right now

"Embrace, extend, and extinguish", also known as "Embrace, extend, and exterminate", is a phrase that the U.S. Department of Justice found that was used internally by Microsoft to describe its strategy for entering product categories involving widely used standards, extending those standards with proprietary capabilities, and then using those differences to disadvantage its competitors. == Origin == The strategy and phrase "embrace and extend" were first described outside Microsoft in a 1996 New York Times article titled "Tomorrow, the World Wide Web! Microsoft, the PC King, Wants to Reign Over...
@Serg No time: too busy...
:30247628\o

@Fabby Now we are having a new problem : when will they run the targeted NON-voting script ? I don't know if it makes sense to upvote the posts from e.g. you, @Serg, @JacobVlijm, or other competent members, when these votes are getting reversed later again ... only because they were from me ...

I dunno. Looks like we should vote less

6:57 PM
Win is in it's death throes, but it will take years to die on desktops. Meanwhile MS needs to force its way into Unix to keep the server market. And the desktop market once were all running linux/android desktops on devices or in a vm on a thin desktop

@Fabby yes ... this is what already happened ... no upvotes for my answers - even though many were accepted !

@chaskes Windows is still the dominant OS out there...

yeah, now voting is scary , because you don't know if it will backfire or not :/

And M$ has a lot of clout: they ave a tone of developers, money, ...

oh I found florian diesch making a mistake

Q: Ask Ubuntu logo is quite wobbly

TimLook: Please fix. You could use this sprite file (all text is converted into paths).

@Fabby Yes, but that doesn't change what I said about how things will change

Hey all, I am new here, and just have a quick question about what to do with my question. I posted my question about 15 days ago, I got some comments that did not work, and had the moderators remove one answer that was not really helpful. I got no real answer though, I then posted a bounty, and still no answer, what would be my next best course of action?

@ChristopherAngulo-Bertram improve the question :)

@ChristopherAngulo-Bertram a link to your question would be useful

and link to it please
tsk @serg

7:00 PM
You should look at it before saying that... let me ass a link, hold on.

@Rinzwind tell me all about it!

oh, god , the typo

@Serg I wrote exactly this to shog9 who sent me a mail ... the answer was simply ignorant ... not to say rude ... he seems to not understand what I am talking about

@JacobVlijm I am so gonna outrep him now ;=)

Q: Can't get Samba4 Active Directory-Domain Controller (AD-DC) to start at boot Ubuntu 16.04

Christopher Angulo-BertramI built Samba4.4.3 AD-DC on Ubuntu 16.04, and cannot figure out how to script it so I can start the samba service on reboot. I followed the instructions from here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2146198 I did not use the install from the Ubuntu software, or the repositories, because ...

7:01 PM
@Rinzwind I think you already did...

on that question :P

Hey typos are the greatest jokes in life today. :-)

@JacobVlijm made his answer correct >:-D

I once sent an email (in the time of Mac LC) which should be "please your reaction" spell-check wasn't what it is today, dare not to say what the adressed read...

@ChristopherAngulo-Bertram Pay a professional...

7:03 PM
@ChristopherAngulo-Bertram that will have a very narrow amount of people on AU :P

@Rinzwind Good that we can see the history

Ah!

@Rinzwind Roll back?

@ChristopherAngulo-Bertram That is indeed an extremely specific question... You might indeed need to seek professional help.

7:07 PM
I am a professional, trying to be able to sell this in my services to customers. It seems to be only a problem in 16.04, so I could always just use 14, but really would like to have an answer.
I figure 16 is so fresh out that it just has not been covered yet. But i always like to check the community first.

@ChristopherAngulo-Bertram well , if that's the 16.04 specific issue, then it probably is related to systemd , because 14.04 still uses upstart. Unfortunately , i am not familiar with systemd in the least , so i can't help.

@ChristopherAngulo-Bertram It's not recommended you use 16.04 for stability until 16.04.1.

yeah that is what i wrote in the post.
The instructions for setting up the startup script was for 14, and I figured it was systemD that was my issue.
yes I agree with you about 16.04.1, but I was trying to prepare by testing in 16.04, ran into the issue, and wanted to see if I could make people aware of it. I will send in a bug report, and see if anything comes of that.
Thanks all for the help.

@ChristopherAngulo-Bertram my experience with 16.04 is very positive, I installed it shortly after release ... works flawlessly so far ... I think this is more a specific systemd problem ... maybe you should contact Lennart Poettering ! :)
@ChristopherAngulo-Bertram Lennart is deeply involved in systemd ... here you find the contact information and more about him -> 0pointer.de/blog

7:25 PM
@TheBrownOne You should talk to @ParanoidPanda. At one moment, he thought I replied before he asked a question...
(it was a typo: I was editing another thing, thought I pressed enter and then started replying to him)
You can guess his confusion... He thought for a moment I was a REAL Vorlon... ;-)

Q: Rainbow Unity Colors?

tomiazSilly question here, but would it be possible to have a script that runs in the background, and automatically changes the colors of the Unity DE so it cycles through a rainbow? @Serg Nah, it's stage 1 of Alzheimer's disease...
;-)

Aw man . . . and I thought with all the marijuana in Denver air would make me safe from Alzheimer's

;D :D :D

Well, here's my Q&A askubuntu.com/q/755675/295286 , can we please VTC the post above ?

7:34 PM
@Fabby :D :D :D

@Serg Too late for me to do anything. A mod stepped in.

The help from the gods . . . i mean, mods . . . :)

Thanks @cl-netbox, I will try to make contact.

@ChristopherAngulo-Bertram You're welcome ! :)

I also just posted my question on the answers.launchpad site as well.

7:41 PM
Hmmm . . . . I have an odd idea for a script . . . .

Goodbye ! :)

woot, another AU election! :)

8:02 PM
Hi @Mahesh!

Hi guys

Hi @Seth!

Then rep requirement for mod nominees is kinda low, right? I don't think it's realistic that anyone below 2k is gonna get elected?

Good news: I'm back to Ubuntu. Bad news: Didn't find as much free time as I expected. :P
@Fiksdal: Aye. but there's no harm in keeping it low, and it is nice to see that technically there's a very low barrier for entry.

fair enough

8:09 PM
@Mahesh small steps :p

:P Yep. Small steps.

@Zacharee1 I need another icon done and need your graphic designer skills :) ping me when you have time. Very simple task, probably will take you less than 5 mins

I have time now @Serg

@Zacharee1 very well . . . basically , what i need is a border icon. Very thin and bright color

border?

8:12 PM
Like that , only thinner and brighter

The divider?

yes

OK
What color?

i have idea for two scripts. One is basically to organize the launcher icons into groups, the other - to group currently open windows on workspaces and place divider between them ( probably will be difficult to achieve )

I wouldn't know :p

8:14 PM
@Zacharee1 orange or green would do, something bright

OK
rounded or square corners?

rounded probably will look better

@Serg i am curious: what are these icons for?

@edwinksl separators for grouping launcher icons :) LXDE and XFCE launchers have separators , unity does not. So I've an idea for a script that will help users to organize the launcher :)

ah you are right about the separators (i dabbled with xubuntu before)
looking forward to seeing script

8:22 PM
dunno if it's thin enough

um . . . not thin at all :/

uh
so I think I need the height/width of the launcher

@Zacharee1 can you make it basically an icon with transparent background but with line in the middle ? I think that will work. Basically a vertical bar in the middle of a square ?

sure
like that?

yes, that's a lot better
@Zacharee1 Can you make the bar thinner ?

8:31 PM
yeah

Very well, I think that's what I'll be working with for now.
Thank you, Zach. As always - you're awesome
That's what i sort of have in mind - separating the icons

:)

@tim: have a look here... On points, you're the best mod (tied with @ThomasW. but he's way too cranky to become a mod!)
>:-)

Do i need to run seahorse as root ? Because I do File -> New -> PGP key , enter all the info, but it doesn't create any key . . .or at least i don't think it does

@Zacharee1 Yeah, why not? If computer 2 is in a rural area with free local calls and no DSL service...

@Zacharee1 uuh . . . i think that user has not used computers since like 80s , it's all ethernet and wifi now O_o who uses phone lines anymore ?

@Serg Africa? A hunting lodge? a weather station on a mountain with GPRS only?

@Fabby Yeah, but they want a local network between those two computers using dialup; not internet

8:53 PM
tons of reasons to do this
I'l leave a comment to clarify.

one of the computers would have to be a dialup server
both would need modems
and both would need to be running Ubuntu for this question to be on-topic

OK, back to the pgp key
how do i do the thingy ?

@zach That user is gonna get my +1 for the epic animation...

Tim
@Serg With KGPG not seahorse

@Fiksdal that's not an animation :p

8:57 PM
lol

Tim
@Zacharee1 Or is it, a gif with like a 100second loop?

hahahah

Tim
One day I just have to post a screenshot which is a gif with like a screaming face occationally.

sorry, my English vocabulary is not the best

@Tim starred!

8:58 PM
What do you call an animation that is not moving?
Uhm... the epic artwork

A still picture...

He's gonna get my 1+ for the epic artwork. Or the epic still @Fabby

;-)

Tim
Yeah, just picture / image
