@bwDraco interesting how some web sites/services had a "canary" statement, when the canary no longer shows up, it is likely to be gagged and held in the basement for questioning.
aparentally the "Canary" statement says something like we have not (yet) had request from the government (and other variations), it is a pre-emptive and therfore legal workaround , to the gag order.
Canary for the "canary in the mine" caged canaries taken into mines , if unseen noxious gassholes would kill the miners the canary gets it first :-)

Bob
@Psycogeek The legality is untested and therefore questionable.

well it is dead anyways, as most of the canaries put up , are no longer to be found, so much for privacy, illegal search and seizure and probable cause and any other fancy words that were derived from that useless piece of paper once called the constitution.
Somehow putting a taylor swift song on your wedding video, and posting it to the 5 people who would watch it, now constitutes a gag order from the NSA :-)
They shoot themselves in the foot too, when they do not eventually tell the "american public" who is paying them , what it was all about. So far we know that NO terrorist has ever been caught before they blew themselves up, except for that 14 year old making fireworks in his basement , who probably should be tried as a war criminal.
If they are activly stopping hundreds of sleeper cells from operating in the states, and protecting us all from being bombed daily (vrses the avg 100 of us dying in cars each day) , they should then Inform the people of this republic of all the great works they have done.
And protecting Hillery clintons e-mail, that isnt one of them :-)

1:04 AM
Side note, did you know that hitler was (more) able to play his insane war games after ridding hisself of a few top officials that would have used some logic , by telling thier dirty secrets . (undoubtedly aquired by reading thier e-mails :-) And made laws (patriot act) that allowed his cabinet members to ignore the constitution.

Q: Convincingly "breaking" a system for a non technical user

Journeyman GeekFor various reasons out of scope for Super User, I've been tasked with temporarily disabling one of my own systems. I have full admin control and own this system. ^ I thought the same thing @DavidPostill

@NetworkKingPin Yeah, don't they teach actual programming in a CS University course?

lol

Maybe he's registered with a "fake diploma" university ;)

maybe game dev is a different course offered by the uni and he missed out on it.

Bob
@DavidPostill Depends which school.
Some are very theoretical. Some are very practical.
CompSci at UNSW is Software Eng. lite :P

11:31 AM
@DavidPostill I suggest (s)he starts a few years ago. :)

Bob
If you want, you can drop into chat and I'd be happy to try to give a few pointers. This is off-topic for Super User and too broad to be a great fit for any main Stack Exchange site, but chat is fine. — Bob 17 secs ago

@DavidPostill I learnt programming in my first year
it was java
normal simple stuff 'move this turtle'

Bob
@djsmiley2k It really really depends on the school. They each have different focuses.

10 years later, I still don't concider myself a programmer, but I never really wanted to be one
However I do have a github of random 'stuff' I've written, adopted, broken etc...
@Bob but from the question, he has no clue how programming even works

Bob
11:36 AM
Some take the "It's computer science, not a coding boot camp" view.

and i bet SNES games are terrible examples due to space and other constraints.
@Bob programming was one of 8 modules I think

Bob
@djsmiley2k I don't get that vibe at all.

@Bob He doesn't have enough rep to chat :/

Bob
@DavidPostill He has 50+ on mathematics.se

other modules might of included some vb or excel macros... :D

Bob
11:37 AM
@djsmiley2k ...IMO, that's one of the "coding boot camp" schools. Some of those are alright/good. Others don't go into nearly enough theory and just churn out mediocre cargo cult programmers.

If you've got high enough rep elsewhere, can you join any chat?

Bob
@djsmiley2k Chat rep is across the whole SE network.

so any site being high enough = access? Cool :)
Also, oh dear, lifehack users.

Bob
@djsmiley2k Yea that's one reason I wanted to talk to him in chat. Got some suggestions and also wanted to go into a bit of detail why old platforms aren't ideal to start with.

Yah, makes sense
TYhey'd make sense as a look at how things 'used to/could be' done
Uni basically taught me what the MVC model was, and that others existed

Bob
11:40 AM
@djsmiley2k I know a lot of first-year (or even second-year!) CSE students who were decent at the theory and maths and algorithms but struggled with practical programming courses. But by third-year they were more well-rounded.
Again, that depends on the uni and the focuses.

Java because it was what the lecturers knew/wasn't hard to setup on student provided platforms.
See, the math we didn't really get into til 2nd year
they did a bit first year, and then it was optional from then on.
I did second year and stopped it after that

Bob
@djsmiley2k IMO, there's two types. You have the 'proper' programmers who are mostly language-agnostic and have a good foundation. A good enough grasp of the principles to pick up any language. Then you have the rote-learners who had one particular language drummed into their heads and can reproduce some basic stuff in that language but struggle to make anything new/transition to newer/different technologies.
Personally? I'm a bit of both. I can figure out things myself but I'm not great with theories or algorithm design :\
@djsmiley2k I remember someone linked a lecture video in here. Basically some guy reading off slides and getting the students to chant back what he read.
There's lots of universities like that handing out degrees worth about as much as the paper they're printed on.
Oh, wait. Wasn't reading off slides. Better than I remembered :P
@djsmiley2k Also, the other thing. The fact that he came and asked, and wants a starting point to do his own research - I like that.

@Bob That's how I learned the Alphabet and my Times Table ;)

Bob
@DavidPostill Those are things that can be rote-learned :P
Programming... needs more critical thinking usually.

@Bob yup, asking is good.

Q: What to do with the "rm -rf" hoax question

SvenIt turns out the the recent question (link only visible with enough rep) regarding the misuse of rm -rf in Ansible was actually just a hoax in some kind of viral marketing effort. @TheCleaner "Thou hast" or "thou dost have". Never "thou doth hast". ("doth" is for third person singular - I do, thou dost, he/she doth.) — Jenny D 42 mins ago

if it was just marketing, then the (wild) claims that the reddit spammer section had in it as to the server being likely to be used by spammers, becomes more likely. Spammers often see themselves as "marketing experts" and many are known to try and sell thier expertise in some way.
If i had discovered that many of the users exisiting on these servers were already on the spam lists plenty, it would not be a problem for me to see the user Deleted entirely.
The only other justification for not removing the user themselves, would be if it was just a single fun april fools kind of thing. if it was factually known to be marketing, then the user should be treated the same as any other spammer, and Nuked.

3:38 PM
he didn't actually spam his service tho
that's the funny part

a Hoax of this type would be a total marketing spam, only the final results after all the free advertising would be the intended result.
Like a bad actor , whos career is going down the tubes, does some crasy stunt, or heads off to a rehab clinic. Looks like a stupid thing to do and be, but does cause the tabloids to do the free advertising thing. (some quote belongs here)

cFreedI'm assiduously frequenting the Stack Overflow and Code Review sectors, where I got some reputation. Q: Loading DOS on old laptop

Tim RohrI have an old laptop, I need to install DOS on the machine. Is there a way to copy a running version of DOS to the hard drive so it will boot up? I have the hard drive from the laptop connected to my current laptop running windows 7.

I don't understand how this question is supposed to be "overly broad". It seems straight forward. He wants to put MS-DOS on an old laptop. He proposed that to do this, he'd copy it from another machine that's already running MS-DOS. He asked if that was a viable solution.
Don't see what's so broad about that.

Seems fine to me

It has 3 votes to close based on "overly broad". I wonder if it's just people bandwagoning. Have no idea what the reasoning was.
I actually tried to do this once myself, years and years ago. So my answer is from experience and my own research back then.

@BenRichards broad can be (does get) applied to too local also (exactally the opposite) where it is deemed that only the person asking would gain from it, also it has been applied to didnt research the 128 ways of doing it, as already displayed on the web. I dont make that kind of association myself, i have just seen it applied that way.

@Psycogeek Ah, I see. Regardless, standard form should be to comment as to the reasoning why when you VTC.

6:46 PM
When lists pages long could be made for all the ways you can fire up a dos disk, some people would mark it "too broad" a blogs worth or a books worth.

Actually, I wonder if that would be a good feature to have: if you vote to close, and the reason isn't self-evident (off-topic or NARQ), require a comment explaining your vote.
@Psycogeek Well in this instance, he's not asking "how", per se, just "is it possible". So my answer of yes + caveat is sufficient.
And so I think if the scope is just that, it's not very broad at all.

When VTC people dont explain the problem they are having with what seems like a legit computer question, they could end up creating more ticked off users, and jackasses who come back and attack the site :-) sooo isnt it just easier to answer the easy questions ?

Well yeah, that's what I do, generally, lol
If it's an easy question, I have no problem firing off a quick answer even if it's obvious it will be closed. Because it'll be helpful to that person in that one instance, and when it gets closed/flagged as duplicate/etc, it will have been cleaned up properly anyway.
Of course you gotta balance the two, though. Don't want to encourage misuse of the site.

Windows is so confusing

The thing that encourages misuse of the site Most, really isn't people (doing what the whole purpose of the site is) Answering them. It is the damn front invitation "anybody can ask a question" with no simple added qualifications that are Now Expected.

@CMDEmu Windows is Microsoftian for 'worthless piece of junk that looks pretty'

@BenRichards "standard form should be to comment as to the reasoning why when you VTC." I'm not sure I agree with this. To me "Standard form" is that your vote is anonymous, and commenting to explain your vote eliminates that anonymity. There's never been a forced comment on close, and it's been rejected time and time again because your vote is intended to be anonymous (unless you choose otherwise). :)

there is no file browser that is as good as the one in windows

@CMDEmu This one is:

@Ƭᴇcʜιᴇ007 No reason the site could implement a way to require a comment, but then report it publically, but anonymously.

oh please
no URL bar

6:55 PM
there is one you can enable
But if that's not your taste, here's my preferred file browser:

@Daniel I don't think I've seen many Mac users even express much love for Finder's file browsing UI.

can it support \\smb paths

Yes @CMDEmu
Here's my fave file browser:

can it support http:.//domaiin/image.jpg paths and display that image in some image viewer

with a plugin yes

6:57 PM
so no
can the browser run applications and not just open documents

yes

I'm a Windows user myself but "best file browser" is so subjective not to mention there's a zillion file browsers out there.

so can you open disk utility from textedit

anyways I need to get ready to leave. I've got a long weekend ahead of me. and @BenRichards is right.
Yes I believe so @CMDEmu
wait, what are you asking?

smb seemed to suck in OSX

6:58 PM
smb works great for me - when it's turned on

im asking if osx is as capable as windows

yes
it is, if not more so.
anyways, like I said, I need to leave
so bye.

oh ok
bye

But otherwise, I think if you wanted to claim a file browser as the best, the best candidate would likely be Midnight Commander. :)

the windows file browser can also view web pages and ftp folders
