Hi

sup
still at 720p here... for a few more weeks

(so, I had a HNQ that went rediculously viral, and people loved that answer. However it turned out the question was a poorly planned hoax)
@allquixotic slumming it out, yo ;p

12:22 AM
I have a question
why does windows fail to have two network interface property sheets open at once
well, one of them is open but greyed out in places the other is normal
cant I have more than one open to compare them

@ThatBrazilianGuy: for a good laugh just read through the pages of http://chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=on+a+list
Sounds like a pokemon who can only say "list". Listomon used LIST. It's super effective!!!
It looks like this, but there are names on the page...
Because it's a list...
and your name is on his list!!!

@ThatBrazilianGuy is that your soon to be ex president?

OMG CLIPPY IS OUR PRESIDENT! Hmm... You know what.... That actually explains a lot of things
@JourneymanGeek But yeah, my avatar portrays my current and previous presidents

@ThatBrazilianGuy I suspect clippy would be a pretty useful president compared to some

Also, he dosen't have a bank account in panama AFAIK

@JourneymanGeek At least he'd be more tuned to the needs of his peers.

@JourneymanGeek See at old house, in my 'office' room, i had some shelves
they came to contain all of the 'tools' which ever were used around the house
hammers, an axe, a jigsaw, saws, screws, screwdrivers, all of it
Now we've moved I'm finally getting them in the shed/away from me :D

I have the biggest headache.

@GuitarShoeDave what from deleting somebody's http root?

@oldmud0: I didnt. his own site did.. he stores his chat sessions as files on the disk.. and it reads and writes to them.
@oldmud0: he said there was bugs and all i did was pass in adirectory as a chatroomname... and it overwrote the files in that folder apparently..
I assumed he wanted testers
Was just trying to help out =( wasnt trying to be destructive.

weird...

@oldmud0: yea he probably wants to /should be storing via database instead =P

ya especially when I myself run an ancient windows 2003 computer that anyone can decide to `del C:`
why don't backticks work in chat...

it only works in oneline chat messages

Or in the middle del C: of lines ;)

I really feel bad about the whole testing thing, but at least he was able to recover.
my whole intention originally was to attempt to write a ssh authorized_key and remote into his machine and send him a screenshot to show how easy it would have been hackable with a POC.
but like again, ' wasnt trying to be destructive '
:P
@DavidPostill: Hows it going today bud? Should add me on linked in :P
Anyhow, Trying to find a cheap sound card that's USB with component ports (SPDIF / Line / or RCA) outputs that can do at least DD 7.1 SS.
The pc that runs the software that works with my midi keyboard doesnt have this, and is making it impossibro to hook up to my sound system.

oh cool. Thanks

5:46 PM
all right I give up trying to do this
I'm trying to make a SIMPLE HELLO WORLD program for native api
and then CLIPPY gets in the way
and I have the windows ddk installed..
but it keeps erroring out for one reason or another because I keep using the wrong include and none of the tutorials talk about the right include to use and where to put it

@oldmud0 Why are you using the DDK? The SDK would be better (unless you plan on writing device drivers)
What language are you writing in?

it's Native API, C++

Native API != Win32

@oldmud0 What is it then?
#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
void main()
{
    cout << "Hello, world, from Visual C++!" << endl;
}

5:51 PM
it's an API for making calls before windows finishes the boot process. If you've ever seen preboot chkdsk, you've seen Native API at work.
The Native API (with capitalized N) is the application programming interface (API) used by Windows NT and user mode applications. It is usually used during system boot, when other components of Windows are unavailable, and by routines such as those in kernel32.dll that implement the Windows API. The entry point of ntdll.dll is LdrInitializeThunk. Most of the Native API calls are implemented in ntoskrnl.exe and are exposed to user mode by ntdll.dll. Some Native API calls are implemented in user mode directly within ntdll.dll. Native API calls are handled by the kernel via the SSDT. While most of...

@Private I rejected your edit for the linux-subsystem-windows tag wiki excerpt in error. I could have sworn the correct name was "Linux Subsystem for Windows", but I just double-checked, and it is not. My bad.
Fortunately, the edit can still be approved, and I hope it is

6:59 PM
isnt that subsystem discontinued in modern windows editions

You're thinking of the UNIX subsystem: technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771672.aspx

oh
well, I gtg , later

I think the UNIX subsystem is still there, at least in Win7 (?)

Is that the system they're planning to unlock again in Win10?

I'm fairly certain this is a new thing

7:25 PM
@BenN been there myself, it is approved now.

@GuitarShoeDave The original Tweet doesn't seem to exist; it may have been deleted.
Please be advised that the latest NVIDIA Game Ready WHQL graphics driver, 364.72, is known to have multiple serious bugs and may even damage hardware. It's best to use 362.00 until the issue is addressed in a future update.

@DavidPostill ^^^
You may unpin the old message.

@bwDraco Done and done

Thanks.

They still haven't fixed it?

7:38 PM
No new WHQL driver from what I can tell.
They have beta drivers but nothing in the way of a production driver just yet.
I also can't find any indication that the beta drivers have addressed these issues.

If it's as serious as I've heard it is, a roll-back as official release would be a good idea.

There are a bunch of other stories about people reverting thier nvidea drivers back even further 344 and something lower even, and getting huge changes in frame rates in very specific games. the variations of the change , and the method used, led me to believe that some if it may be due to "mix-up"
Like some will finnaly do a full real cleanup of the mess made there, prior to (more) cleanly installing the driver.

I learned long ago to stick to a stable driver.. Too many issues with specific releases having odd problems.

Dont fix what isn't broken yet, and if you do be sure to backup first and test after before assuming.

My cable Internet connection is borked again. I'm on cellular data.

7:47 PM
I think most people do not realise what a huge quantity of crap , err i mean file items and registry changes are made via either of the video companies driver/software packages.

the wonders of a 2 party system eh
300Mb for a flippin driver package
what is that about :/

Hehe

ahh what still bothers me is ATI driver programmers have to do the most sofisticated programming to interface the hardware proper, then thier GUI is done in .Net (barf)

@DavidPostill Read the discussion starting here.
The gist of it?
Nov 25 '15 at 5:30, by bwDraco
The modern computer user demands mobility and access everywhere, and modern computer systems are powerful enough to enable productivity on even compact, lightweight, and low-power devices.
Nov 25 '15 at 5:34, by bwDraco
With advances in computer technology, ubiquitous Internet access, and the demands of the modern economy, the economies of scale and performance potential of high-powered servers shared amongst many users are becoming evident once again.

hmmm, shame it doesn't 1 box

We're moving back towards the direction of thin clients and centralized, multitenant servers.

@djsmiley2k It will if you put .png on the end

just point to the picture not the gallery

Computing is coming full circle.
Your thoughts on cloud computing?

8:00 PM
it has it's place
if you're a small place, who need an instant boost of CPU POWAAAAR then woo

Yup. Scale up and out in seconds or minutes, not days.

...and scale back just as quickly to save money when you don't need it.
That's one of the big advantages of cloud computing: performance on demand, just when you need it, without costing an absurd amount of money.

so, how would you guys go about storing 6-8Tb of data, in a professional enviroment?
It sounds absurd, but this is the issue at work atm
with 20/20Mbit internets, it's not like we can just upload everything

@djsmiley2k Use a RAID 10 or RAID 6 storage server with at least four disks.

8:03 PM
disks ?

atm it's backed up on tapes, and rotated on a long term basis

RAID 6 is more scalable but slower.

@bwDraco I'll never use raid for a backup :/
RAID1 is plausible
but i'd just have x disks, and write to all of them

you said store not back-up

RAID 10 is faster but wastes more space with large arrays.

8:05 PM
yeah sorry
this is storage of the backups
iirc it's 6-8Tb on a weekly basis
So really not huge amount of data, but i'm unsure what the 'best' way to store them would be.

6-8 new Tb for every week? gads

not new
but because the swap the tapes out
re-written

I'd suggest several sets of four 6 TB disks that are rotated in a hot-swap enclosure for each backup.

the weekly backups contain everything, including all the vm's iirc

i am not sure yet about 6tb disks, i am up to 4 as assured.

8:08 PM
so that's 12Tb of vm's

In either RAID 6 or RAID 10, you'll have 12 TB of usable space. RAID 6 is slower but will cope with two disk failures. RAID 10 will handle at least one (and possibly, but not always two) failures, but is faster.

I think the 6TB disks are doing a "6hr mode" thing that worked poorly for VCRs for long term storage. overlapping or just too extreeme of density, when it would have been "smarter" to change the form factor to way more platters shoved in there ?

purpendicular storage?
that's been around for awhile
6Tb's are using helium i think, instead of 'air'

They're backups. The data is not going to be retained over the long run. It'll get rewritten regularly.

yeah cept this IS kept long term bw

8:10 PM
@djsmiley2k 8 TB and 10 TB. 6 TB disks may use up to five platters but are normal air-filled designs.

oh ok
i thought 4Tb was the limt with air, things change
:D

Seagate has 8 TB disks that have six platters but are still air-filled.

I think they should have done some kind of Argon sealed (or whatever) Years ago.

It took WD a while for their helium tech to reach consumers, but they're well-tested for enterprise use.
I don't think this is what you need, though. I'd use 6 TB disks.
Seagate ultimately did adopt a helium platform but at 10 TB rather than 8 TB.

"SMR technology that writes data in partially overlapping tracks " this technology i would rather wait for years to see how that pans out.
Like i said 6hr mode vcrs used that same "idea" and besides being barely there to begin with, over time the data was much harder to "track" retrieve and tended to (act like) it depolarised sooner.
in that situation , the manufactures could care less what they were handing people, they just wanted to give them the cute features and the cute numbers.
With hard drives being amazingly stable and long lasting, like anything I have to watch out for when they break that trend and leave me high and dry.
Because (well) people do .

Q: How to connect to a secured network

bismark6I have searched online including youtube to know about how connect to a secured network(wifi) without knowing the key. But it seems there isn't a way to that.Is there a way to connect to a secured wifi using windows 10 operating system?If any how should go about it

assumed , remember the other guy who couldnt find his wireless router :-)

The answer would also depend entirely on the security mode of the network

@Psycogeek Yes, but at least that poster was trying to find it not crack it ;)
And I can't think of a legitimate reason to do what this poster wants to do.

9:03 PM
uuuhh "white hat" security testing ?

@Psycogeek Then he should already know how to do it.

I imagine he would put a little more effort into the question then too
