@Psycogeek it always surprises me that no-one has ever bombed a sports stadium in the middle of a big game
@ThatBrazilianGuy are they mexican?

@Burgi ...aaaaaand you're now on a list

"The number of malaria deaths globally fell from an estimated 839 000 in 2000 (range: 653 000–1.1 million), to 438 000 in 2015 (range: 236 000–635 000), a decline of 48%."
and
"Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US with around 611,105 deaths each year. "
@Burgi Heart attacks in the US cause more deaths than Malaria world wide

I think all the stats should instead reflect which one will kill you MUCH earlier than your generaly ageing body.

I once put my hand on my mouse without looking. I didn't realise a Wasp was sitting there. I had a major reaction to the resultant sting which required a steroid injection.
My hand doubled in size :/

did the wasp die?

:-P

I can't remember, it was a long time ago ...
20 years or so.

@JourneymanGeek wow, just wow, because these people write this based on something said, not something known. Journalistic integrity would have (at least one call) someone check to see if the information is hypothetical, april fools joke , or impersinations etc.

3:06 PM
At the same job I was walking to my desk when I smelt burning. I sat down and 30 seconds later my VDU burst into flames ;)

@Psycogeek its based off a SF question
and I specifically linked that to @MichaelFrank since I was like "dude... insult to injury" when @MichaelFrank wondered who the poor guy was

@JourneymanGeek exactally written off info from a web page. But it is already known that there is no facts or journalistic integrity , , , aww screw it, everything on the web Is BS :-)
@jokerdino No the wasp didnt die but it did double in size (too).

o.O

@Psycogeek Since then I'm allergic to many insect bites. Mosquitoes drive me crazy. If I have a bite near my eye then my eyelids swell so much I cannot see :/

that sucks :(
those malaria stats don't seem right

3:12 PM
I ran 8 laps of 400 m to raise money for awareness about malaria back in 2011.
I think I raised about $2.40.

So much "journalism" this days seems to be basically **nothing more than re-telling to the readers whatever was said on a social media page**, without any kind of investigation, opinion, analysis, commentary, fact-checking...
...you know, the things I grew up to recognize as journalism!

@DavidPostill thanks

and focusing on "how mean people are"
;p

3:14 PM
No, focusing on "HEY LOOK CHECK WHAT HAPPENED AT SOME SITE"
and dressing it as news
it is not, it is STEP ONE on a journalism research. Not the final result.

most of it wont get published in a print paper, right?

How does a hosting site have 1500+ customers on only 1 hard disk anyways? i could see 15-100 , but not 1500?

serverfault.com/questions/769357/recovering-from-a-rm-rf is the question (since they didn't link it)
@Psycogeek ansible basically lets you run a command on many systems
as does salt, puppet...

@JourneymanGeek that is brilliant

@JourneymanGeek oh , and no "are you sure you want to wipe ALL disks on ALL servers message" He he

3:16 PM
however
clever admins go "ok, try it on this test server first" "then these 10 internal servers" "then 100 servers at a tome"
so if the worst happens
meh, you arn't down a whole farm

Clever programs dont allow such things without warnings. On the other hand, If i did hit the delete button, i do expect it to do so.

does anyone else think the font on the independant site looks a bit weird?

our local TV news now pulls stuff off the web and puts it in the news. The one thing they originally had going , gathring thier own stories and fact checking and getting "the other side" of the story all gone. To compete with the web, they now are one.

@jokerdino I don't buy the Independent but I wouldn't be surprised if it made the print edition (tech section).

@DavidPostill the print version stopped being made last month

3:26 PM
@Psycogeek This is a global trend.

People are going to quit watching/reading us if we dont compete with the web. Then people see the same things they get on the web , and they certannly quit watching/reading them.

@Burgi Really?

yeah it was all over the news
their circulation had fallen to the cusp of not being worth printing

I missed that

i'll dig out the article

3:28 PM
@DavidPostill if you read the papers... ;p

i thought rm -rf / only deleted everything mounted in /. in this case did the guy have all his servers mounted under a singe root?

Gotta get the newspaper , or need computer in the terlit room :-)

@Psycogeek ansible basically lets you run a command on many systems

@JourneymanGeek I only read online news ;)

3:30 PM

@Burgi basically? guy didn't realise how dangerous config management is

ah i missed the bit about ansible
i'm still poorly!

@Burgi poorly what?

i have the flu

i'm blaming it for my stupid questions

are foxes a big problem in australia?

@Burgi Probably not as big a problem as rabbits and wallabies ;)

heh

4:05 PM
@Burgi probably got arrested

Bob
@DavidPostill Hard to say :\

@Burgi Red foxes are a problem.

Bob
(compared to rabbits. wallabies aren't a prob.)

Invasive species are a serious threat to the native biodiversity of Australia and are an ongoing cost to Australian agriculture. Numerous species arrived with European colonisation of Australia and steadily since then. Management and the prevention of the introduction of new invasive species are key environmental and agricultural policy issues for the Australian federal and state governments. The management of weeds costs A$3.5 billion yearly. == Causes == Both geologic and climatic events helped to make Australia's fauna unique. Australia was once part of the southern supercontinent Gondwana,...
Red foxes pose a serious conservation problem in Australia. Current estimates indicate that there are more than 6.2 million red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and growing with a range extending throughout most of the continental mainland. The species became established in Australia through successive introductions by settlers in 1830s. Due to its rapid spread and ecological impact it has classified as one of the most damaging invasive species in Australia. == Introduction and spread == Red Foxes were introduced to the British colonies of Van Diemen's Land (as early as 1833) and the Port Phillip District and...

nvm i got confused

4:07 PM
Talking about that idiot on GP lol

i'm poorly

It's OK.

yeah i realised

"In 2002, a Victorian Fox Bounty Trial began to test the efficacy of fox bounties which have been in place intermittently since 1893 (only 30 years after introduction). The study showed no reduction in fox impacts, and that the project may even have been counterproductive. The evaluation also found that a sustained annual reduction of 65% is required to achieve real declines in fox populations."

though they wouldnt mind arresting the problem of foxes over there.

4:09 PM
i thought you were making a joke about everyone in australia being a criminal....

Gotta love the scentists, One day they are telling us about "survival of the fittests" when they are trying to explain evolution, the next day they are tearing up the countryside killing things that get in thier way, calling them invasive species.

@Psycogeek it is a big issue on island countries with unique wildlife

Next thing they say is "well the invasive species comes from another country, and it wouldnt normally exist in this country" Because birds dont fly , man doent walk and nothing floats including seeds right?

@Burgi I am too clever

the north american grey squirrel has almost completely annihilated the native british red squirrel

4:14 PM
@Burgi are you sure it didnt Mutate and evolve instead :-)

"After 140 years, red squirrels are fighting back
The number of red squirrels is on the rise after 140 years while foreign greys are declining, a survey has disclosed. "

My theory is there isnt any evolution (at the higher levels), just constant extinctions, like we need any proof of that, as we extinct another million species again.
So man out there "controlling" nature , thinking that it knows what it is doing, by driving out there on the "Paved over the world" roads in thier reasearch SUV , to tag pin and kill species , for which to return back to thier non invasive species lab . . . just lol.
"there is only 35 of this species left in the whole world, let me show you in this drawer where i have 3 of them pinned through the body , in my lab, where i have 35,000 other insects that i have killed , i mean researched."

lol

Q: Recovering from a rm -rf /

Marco MarsalaI run a small hosting provider with more or less 1535 customers and I use Ansible to automate some operations to be run on all servers. Last night I accidentally ran, on all servers, a Bash script with a rm -rf {foo}/{bar} with those variables undefined due to a bug in the code above this line. ...

@ChatBotJohnCavil not that, Cavil

Couscous (Arabic: الكسكس Kuskus - Berber: ⵙⵉⴽⵙⵓ Seksu) is a Bedouin North African dish of small steamed balls of semolina, usually served with a stew spooned on top. Couscous is a staple food throughout the North African cuisines of Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and Libya and to a lesser extent in the Middle East and Trapani in Sicily. == Etymology == The original name is derived from the Arabic word Keskes, which refers to the cookingpot in which the dish is prepared. Numerous different names and pronunciations for couscous exist around the world. Couscous is /ˈkʊskʊs/ or /ˈkuːskuːs/ in...

A caucus is a meeting of supporters or members of a specific political party or movement. The term originated in the United States, but has spread to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Nepal. As the use of the term has been expanded, the exact definition has come to vary among political cultures. == Origin of the term == The origin of the word caucus is debated, but it is generally agreed that it first came into use in the British colonies of North America. @MartinSmith luckily we recovered almost all data! — Marco Marsala 1 hour ago

@Psycogeek I wonder what he did to recover it?

@DavidPostill the command does not zero out anything ? in windows we would start with undelete, and when the file table referance is gone, then the data is still "in the clusters" it just isnt labled well.
the real question then is how he fixed it All if all of it was hit, and in short time, without a bit of extra help.
Isnt it true (even for linux) that all the active items, and locked files, open files, and other stuff would start tossing error? even if you nulled or quieted that, it would take quite some time to get . . . Ok try this, it always takes Quite some time to Zero out everything

probably wants to get some of that internet glory

A person would have to initiate a real good wipe scenario then sit back, or find something else to do, and wait for it All to be destroyed.
Which goes back to Code (me forgets again) that it was not initiated manually. it was some batch that was probably going to do a nice clean-up.

*** Weird Stuff Going on ***
Are you sure you wanted this program 'ghkhwblud.exe' to encode every one of your user files, when I havent seen your mouse move in the last hour?
[Yes] [Oh Hell NO]

@Psycogeek Because it would have to "hold" the program operation, and then home user backup solutions would fail all over the world
People eiher ignore warnings or freak all over it

thats ok everyone would turn it off anyways :-)
my sync program though says "hey that is a lot of stuff to change are you sure" , while I am always sure, it does cause me to second glance it.

Most people don't even check notifications

They should have a separate window for those since nobody pays attention to them.
I cant stand clutter.

5:43 PM
another warning that is common, this stuff wont fit in the recycle bin (huge file).

And i still dont understand the why on that one..
If i can have a 30gb file in a folder.. I should be able to have a 30gb file in another folder (recycling bin)

@ThatBrazilianGuy How fsking hard is it to go into the app settings and turn off the damn notifications or not install the spammy trash in the first place? The only things that notify me are things I actually care about...
Everything else is either silenced (by it's own settings), smothered (by Android), or dead.

@Psycogeek That wasn't his only mistake.

@djsmiley2k Really? What makes you think so?

:O

It is also interesting (dont know what it means) his last questions were about how to even get the backups working on open DB files. I suppose at this point, he has some 1300 customers and (really?) the company itself did not yet have backups ?

open db files?
mssql replication?
@Psycogeek I don't know why you're supprised.

I surprised because i still have the orignal master tapes and thier backup tapes from 1978 for my business :-) so much Stuff it takes up a whole room.

1978, hmmm
why?

Surely that's costing money, and you don't 'need' that stuff, right?

Original idea, i would be able to make copies, change them to digital, preserve the data, and because all the customers cant even find the tape/disk i send them, to begin with.

but never happened?

aka nobody else would do it.

as even slashdot says, rm -rf doesn't 'do' anything to the data
it just flips the deleted flag/bit/marker

Q: Change all @username references in comments when a user changes their name?

ravenThe fact that a user can change their name at will can lead to some confusion in the comments. For instance, suppose a user named "foo" changes his name to "bar", all those comments signed by "foo" are now signed by "bar", but responses to "bar"'s comments still start with "@foo". Could those "...

Declined
"As noted, user names are not unique. The problem is that whenever someone named MichaelT changes his or her name you don't know which comments to update. It gets particularly hairy if two or more of the same name are in the same set of comments making trying to reverse the business logic impractical."

Just a warning: if this feature is implemented, I will change my username over and over again, each time choosing another user's name, until either all comments begin with "@Pesto" or the system collapses under the strain. — Hilarious Comedy Pesto Dec 4 '09 at 17:17
