trg, maybe?

Hi!
I've never been to Vladivostok either.

@aediaλ Hai!

@aedia have you been reading HP:tMoR?
> Well that was a short little journey to godhood. Even I expected this to take longer than my first day of school.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 That's always my concern when trying new foods too. I'm allergic to peanut and shellfish, though not severely. I somehow accidentally ate a bite or two of this coleslaw that contained peanuts and crab at a work party earlier this year, but luckily the stomach upset wasn't enough to make me puke, so I kept the antihistamines down long enough for them to start working. That was fun.

4:12 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 and this is why sorcery is banned on the Discworld

@MattЭллен Good to know, if I ever visit

Magic isn't, but sorcery is

@MattЭллен I see. No wait, I don't see.

something to do with wizards learning magic but sorcers being magic
anyway. Wizards can't achieve godhood on the Disc
it's not thaumatologically possibly

@MrShinyandNew I have tried Thai food, though, but only at one or two restaurants that seem to mark their menus clearly. It does make me nervous, but I love the food.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Was catching up on transcript a tiny bit back... uhh, yes. It's too addictive to stop.

4:18 PM
Ah, that old chestnut. z7sg gets annoyed by that too @Mahnax

@MattЭллен Darn unregistered users.

@aediaλ Yeah I'm a bit too nervous to try. Plus my wife is also allergic to peanuts, she had an allergic reaction to some thai food when she was pregnant with our son.

the problem with unregistereds is that they can't upvote

Oh right.
But they can accept.

aye, that they can

4:20 PM
I was actually so tired and stressed out yesterday that I took a long bath in the evening and I was going to read a magazine and then I was like, but wait! I could read HP:MoR on one of my old devices...

it is a tad frustrating when they don't understand the system

Indeed.

@Mahnax I gave you a pity upvote :)
er

oh! that makes more sense :D

4:21 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Ohhh a bad experience like that would definitely make me scared.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 D: I feel shamed.

@aediaλ Thing is, my allergy was a childhood allergy and may be gone. But it was sooo serious, I'm nervous about testing it.
@Mahnax Nah don't be, the answer deserves a vote.
Otherwise it'd be a pity downvote, I guess :)

As you can see, I'm not very active on SO. And when I am, I usually don't do much of anything productive.
I have some really stupid questions.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I have mostly tried things that might hurt me when I already felt sick. I think I tried sushi after a long stomach flu, thinking, "well if raw fish that makes me puke, it'll be just like yesterday". But none of my allergic reactions to food have ever required hospitalization, so I am sometimes willing to take a bit of a chance.
It makes sense that you wouldn't be if you had a more serious reaction.

2 hours later…
6:04 PM
Happy x-mas
!!!

@matt You back home? How's the headache?

seems to have passed, thanks :)

user19161
@MattЭллен You got my email?

user19161
@Mahnax By default I don't think your questions are stupid.

user19161
@N3buchadnezzar Enjoy the hols!

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I still have eczema.

7:06 PM
@JasperLoy yes

user19161
7:17 PM
@MattЭллен Well, you don't have to say anything with regard to that, just thought I'd tell you for fun. It's nothing really, anyway.

oh, well, I've just replied :D

user19161
@MattЭллен I just replied. :-)

I don't have plans for NYE either
I'll see what's going on in my fair city

user19161
@MattЭллен I will let you know if my new third wish ever happens, in a few years from now!

user19161
@MattЭллен I might just go out and walk myself as usual at my favourite shopping centre.

Q: Different post count on summary and accounts tabs

Jasper LoyMy user profile currently shows 223 answers and 15 questions on the summary tab but 221 answers and 15 questions on the accounts tab. This cannot be due to delay in updating as the discrepancy persists for quite a while. I noticed this phenomenon for some other users too. For example, simchona h...

7:37 PM
@MattЭллен What are you doing now?

Well, I'm just typing a message to a friend I've not spoken to in ages, then I'm popping out to give another friend a Christmas gift.

user19161
@MattЭллен Good good. I think now that I have found my printer driver for Fedora I will give it another shot.

user19161
And I am surprised your two guesses were completely wrong.

user19161
Hello @mitch!

@JasperLoy you're not a predictable person :D

Q: What's the name of the (false) assumption that people in past ages were less able to reason?

hawkeyeIn arguments involving past decisions or tradition, people frequently blow off a claim to tradition by using the (false) assumption that people in days gone by, or even ancient history were less able to use their powers of reason. Is there a term for this assumption?

user19161
Wow these word requests are all so unpredictable.

A small part of my brain is telling me that there is a real answer to this question
but it's too small to actually know the answer

user19161
@MattЭллен You can enlarge it with lemsip!

7:52 PM
nah, I think lemsip would smallen it further. Maybe electro-shock therapy would help...

user19161
@MattЭллен Or reverse lobotomy!

I still have my lobes!

user19161
I think I might retire from SE at year end.

The choice is yours, but then who would keep the chat room going?
plus the spelling in here would become atrocious
and Reg would never go to bed

user19161
Hehe.

user19161
7:57 PM
@MattЭллен I wanted to correct the tt but thought you might have done that intentionally.

maybe half intentionally :D

user19161
Just like you once wrote Bangcock, though that was a genuine mistake I believe.

user19161
But where did you get the idea it was spelled as Bangcock?

because that's how it's pronounced
I just forgot how it was spelled :)

user19161
7:59 PM
I will declare in this room when my wishes come true.

user19161
So stay tuned.

user19161
It will be some of the greatest miracles mankind has witnessed.

user19161
But sometimes miracles do happen.

user19161
There was a woman who went through hundreds of operations. First doctors told her she would die, but she lived. Then they said she would not walk, but she walked. Then they said she could not give birth, but she had a child. She fought battle after battle and in the end she was whole.

^ strikes me as off-topic, or disguised peeving

8:48 PM
Hola.

user19161
@JSBᾶngs Nah, I don't feel it's peeving.

user19161
@Kitḫ Hola!

Want to hear a miraculous story?

user19161
@Kitḫ Yes yes!

I remember reading this story a few years ago, and I like to embellish, but the basic facts are true...

user19161
8:56 PM
@Kitḫ I thought you were going to tell me your life story...

A tanker truck full of gasoline jack-knifes on a busy highway.
@JasperLoy Nah, that's not miraculous.
Witnesses see the Jeep that was right behind it strike the side of the truck, but they can't reach the people in the vehicle.
They help the driver out, but within minutes, the Jeep and the tanker are engulfed in flames.
About fifteen minutes later, rescue crews arrive on the scene.

I don't get it.

user19161
Neither do I, what is the miracle?

user19161
That the driver was saved?

That the rescue crews arrived that fast.

user19161
9:04 PM
But that is not too miraculous IMAO.

It is if we're talking Sahara, say.

user19161
Or Soviet Russia.

They use foam to douse the flames.

In Soviet Sahara, reach crews you!

(I'm not done yet. The CO detector was going off.)

user19161
9:05 PM
In the US you engulf the flames. In Soviet Russia flames engulf you.

(I mean actually in my house, the CO detector was going off.)

@Kitḫ get out!

So, right. They use foam to douse the flames.

This is getting miraculouser by the minute.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 It's fine. I'm just going to take a little nap.

user19161
9:06 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 How is your Fedora upgrade?

@Kitḫ 哎呀!你疯了!
@JasperLoy status: downloaded

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 On ELU, Reg screws you.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Gesundheit!

@JasperLoy I'll blog about it when it's done

@JasperLoy You always have to go for the highest-hanging joke, don't you?

user19161
9:08 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I joined CLU and asked a question!

user19161

Q: Pronunciation of 因为

Jasper Loy因为 is usually pronounced as yīn wèi, but sometimes I hear it pronounced as yīn wéi which really brings out the meaning as reason (yīn) being (wéi). Which pronunciation came about first? Do regional differences account for this phenomenon? Are the two completely interchangeable in meaning?

Anyway, they put the fire out, and in a tiny patch of unmelted pavement in the middle of the mass of burned vehicles, they find a young mother, with her arms wrapped around her two-year-old son, crying her eyes out.

So, Kit, if you're not in the mood for telling the story, kick some Raider Angels ass or something.
Oh. I got betweened.

They are both perfectly fine.

Q: What does the term "Urban Legend" mean?

user5531I heard a great story the other day about a guy with a bloody hook for a hand - but then, when I retold it to my kids at bedtime my Au Pair informed me that it was just a silly Urban Legend. What does she mean by that?

sighs

user19161
I Am Legend is a 2007 post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Will Smith. It is the third feature film adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the same name, following 1964's The Last Man on Earth and 1971's The Omega Man. Smith plays virologist Robert Neville, who is immune to a man-made virus originally created to cure cancer. He works to create a remedy while defending himself against the mutated creatures created by the virus. Warner Bros. began developing I Am Legend in 1994, and various actors and directors were attached to the projec...

@Kitḫ I could tell you OVER 9000 such stories in less than five minutes.
@JasperLoy Nice picture of Mr Smith.

@Kitḫ true story? or what

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 Combination of Mr Shiny caps and Reg 9000.

9:12 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Reg doesn't think so. I'm pretty sure that it was a Drama In Real Life several years ago. I could be wrong.

user19161
I remember watching an American drama series Touched by an Angel or something like that.

user19161
Not sure if those were real stories.

user19161
But one of my friends claims to have had some supernatural experiences.

user19161
Hola @aedia! I have turned pink like you!

No offense, but Drama In Real Life usually isn't embedded in the-basic-facts-are-trues, I-am-pretty-sures and I-could-be-wrongs.
But hey, cool story sis.

user19161
9:15 PM
Thanks for the comment bro.

i no rite
I feel like messing with people today.

user19161
After all it's the festive season!

I liked Kit's other story more.
And that one sounded as real as it gets.

I like stories!
I don't care if they're true.
@JasperLoy Hola!

Thanks. I don't care if they are true either.

9:17 PM
Happy solstice!

user19161
After all, what is real? Who decides logic?

And who was phone?

Happy solstice.

user19161
Those two questions were quoted from A Beautiful Mind.

What is this happy solyanka people won't stop talking about?

user19161
9:19 PM
Xmas.

So maybe I'll tell you a real nice story that I know is true.

user19161

After I check the alarm again.

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 I see his face every December!

9:21 PM
Well, I think I'm going to miss @Kit's story. It's now past 4 and I'm off work until Jan 4 so I probably won't be in the chatroom much. Except maybe on the 26th I might drop in and post about Xmas lego. maybe.

I don't think that's a picture of Solyanka. Not even Émile Solyanka.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone.

user19161

user19161
HO HO HO MERRY CHRISTMAS!

@JasperLoy thanks

Right. Merry Christmas. You Catholic heathens.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Have fun!

user19161
HO HO HO!

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Enjoy it!

@RegDwightѬſ道 Your contradictory epithet is half-right, anyway

Not contradictory in the least. JSB would appreciate it.
Everyone knows that the true Chrismas is on January 6th.

9:25 PM
That's too far from Hanukkah to be convenient for us.

Orthodox Christmas.

Merry shifting around your holidays so they fall on the same days as old heathen holidays.

user19161
HO HO HO!

@RegDwightѬſ道 I'll drink to that!

I'll drink to anything. And then some.

user19161
9:27 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 Vodka, bucketwise.

Greetings, everyone

A: Why is "ain't" not listed in dictionaries?

nohatThe common bit of schoolyard wisdom that “ain’t ain’t in the dictionary, so ain’t ain’t a word” turns out to be untrue. Every online dictionary that I’ve ever looked in contained an entry for ain’t. Merriam-Webster Online: Main Entry: ain't Pronunciation: \ˈānt\ Etymology: contraction of...

@JasperLoy A bold statement.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Wow. We really are awesome.

I'll make sure to pop in whenever I'm seeking enlightenment, the key to a good seduction, or a great recipe for pfeffernussen.

Pfeffernussen sounds like a Dane trying to speak German.

user19161
That is not even listed in Urban D.

Hey @aedia! How do you like HP:MoR?

9:34 PM
@Kitḫ It's terribly addictive. I've had to restrain myself so I can get anything done today.

@RegDwight You are correct. There's a reason why I do not participate in the German.SE board

@Kitḫ Well, it appears that no amount of TPTB can kill this room.

i have a damn tonsil stone and it's irritating me.
my breath stinks and i cant get rid of it

That's how them tonsil stones roll.
The Rolling Tonsil Stones.

Haha.
My sis-in-law calls it "stinky vagina breath" when she get them.

Yummy.
Delicious again, Peter.

She's a hoot. Love her to pieces.
@RegDwightѬſ道 Oh, that's awful.

Don't forget to love her to bits, too. Also, nuts and bolts.
@Kitḫ Beastie Boys???

9:38 PM
Can't do that. My brother would have my head.

Chechechecheck your head.

Lalalala! Not listening!

Oh, you said Raider Angels right?

9:41 PM
No point in the other one now.

Oh shit, that was forever and a day ago.
1992.
We were all babies then.

Jez
anyone have any tips as to how to get tonsil stones out?
it's right down in the back of the throat.

Squish with your fingers.

Jez
9:43 PM
cant get it out, not a chance
plus the gag reflex

There are videos on YouTube. Ewwww.

Jez
i try coughing and yelling and stuff and nothing gets the buggers out
intelligent design proponents need to explain the existence of tonsils to me

Are you good at gargling?
You can use a mouthwash with peroxide to get rid of them.

@Jez They're aliveish! They don't want to go!

Jez
maybe we need to strike up communication with them and say "fuck off, you stinky disgusting things"

9:48 PM
You might be able to massage them out too.
Rubbing on the outside of your throat gently, that is.
If you can't suppress your gag reflex.
But really. Gargle with peroxide if you can. Just don't swallow it.
OK. Later people!
