i think the only consistent american culture is the self-stereotyped one

Distance wise: California<->Idaho is about similar to France<->Poland and the chasm's between those 2 cultures are expected to be completely different from eachother; I posit they're not so far as we often think.
@whatsisname mayhaps.. It doesn't matter. I don't even remember what I saw that made the conjecture come to mind.

So which one of you is him?

user41796
whistles tunelessly

I'm waiting for git to bisect things

@Ixrec you know smart formal things. Why is bisect different from disect? I know it is, I know what they both mean, but shouldn't they mean the same thing?

5:13 PM
you mean the git commands or the fact that in normal English one is a math word and one is an animal science word?

@Ixrec they're both animal science words though- and I mean in terms of animal science why do they mean different things?

are they? well bisect is a math word too

@Ixrec yeah, but that's not what I mean

user41796
bisect would imply cutting in half. disect would mean cutting into

pretty much, that's what I'd assume, and what Google says

user41796
5:15 PM
one implies location within the action, other doesn't.

@GlenH7 yeah, but isn't di also referening 2?

user41796
Nope

user41796
or at least, not in this case

oh ok that actually makes sense. to "di-sect" would cause 2, to "bi" sect would cause 2 equally

user41796
As I'm sure the language of exceptions has an exception to prove me wrong

user41796
5:16 PM
You know, if only there was an EL&U mod in this room to help out...

because di does typically refer to 2

user41796
And it's dissect, not disect

user41796
Verb: dissect ‎(third-person singular simple present dissects, present participle dissecting, simple past and past participle dissected)
  1. (transitive) To study an animal's anatomy by cutting it apart; to perform a necropsy or an autopsy.
  2. (transitive) To study a plant or other organism's anatomy similarly.
  3. (transitive) To analyze an idea in detail by separating it into its parts.
  4. (transitive, anatomy, surgery) To separate muscles, organs, and so on without cutting into them or disrupting their architecture.
  5. Now dissect the triceps away from its attachment on the humerus.
  6. (transitive, pathology) Of an infection or foreign material, following the fascia separating muscles or other organs.

those are the best app change notes I've ever read

@PreferenceBean it helps if you don't ignore me.

This question might (you need to check) be more on topic over at Programmers, but it's not really a good fit as a "programming problem" on SO. — James Thorpe 6 secs ago

haha ok

5:27 PM
lol what?

what did I miss?

@GlenH7 oh, well dis makes clear how it means what it does. Nevermind. I'm an idiot simply confused by my own inability to spell.

@JamesThorpe - No. Just flat out no. This would not work over at Programmers. — GlenH7 2 mins ago

@MichaelT I was wondering why, but it's whatever I suppose

Apparently, PrefrenceBean doesn't like me saying that changing the name of the site isn't an option and the occasional complaint about question quality.

He's entitled to the right to ignore you. C'est la vie.

user41796
At least James removed his comment.

don't ever call me that again

@whatsisname 10 here and sadly most of them are Bugzilla tabs, constituting my "must do today". It keeps growing rather than shrinking :(

user55340
In the meantime, posing answers to questions to create a very disjointed conversation is amusing.

I need (a) a holiday, and (b) someone to do all my work for me (properly) while I'm gone.
@GlenH7 actually true!

@JimmyHoffa A game?

In a meeting - can't replicate it in my head

sissy!

I've proper got the shakes today :(
Nearly dropped the tea tray walking in
that can't be a good sign

Low blood sugar?

Fits but I can't explain how it'd be the case

try some OJ or Soda maybe?

5:39 PM
Are the shakes a sign of diabetes? Because I consume a lot of sugar when I think about it
I haven't had my Coke today - just a couple of cups of tea
maybe my body now needs that much sugar :/

I would eat first and see if that helps.

or I ruined my whateveritis thingie that produces insulin so that it's in overdrive or however it works
@Ampt started just before lunch; continued afterwards :(
I've waaaay overdue for a GP checkup anyway so this is a good reason to finally get on and book that
my hands shake a little bit every once in a while, though this was pretty extreme

I would suggest that, yeah

felt like I was going to faint just before putting the tray down. sudden moment of panic

yikes. probably ought to schedule that

5:42 PM
yeah
mind you, I've not had much sleep over the last few days. maybe that's all it is. I'm the last one to panic about health (though that's not always a good thing)

lack of sleep shouldn't give you the shakes - you'd get microsleeps

hum really I figured exhaustion could manifest more subtly than just falling asleep

user41796
@Ampt Lack of sleep can cause a number of symptoms

I'm just a sock

5:43 PM
go see a sock with a doctorate

Dr Sock
on a sidenote, does it wind up anyone else when the uneducated filth call Spock "Dr Spock"?
cos it sure winds me up
<-- educated filth

user41796
High stress, low sleep, could easily trigger a low blood sugar episode

excellent
well at least I'm not assuredly dying. that's good to know.

user41796
@PreferenceBean Likely not. You ought to schedule a check-up anyway with your GP if you haven't had one.

yeah I will
beer night tonight so we'll see whether I feel better
frankly my working theory so far has been that my mini shakes are more likely a symptom of alcoholism :P
I'm better now but until last year I drank a lot
now I only go out once a week so two pints and four double vodkas and I'm down for the count.

user41796
5:47 PM
@PreferenceBean I'd personally be more inclined to attribute them to stress tbh

@GlenH7 there's certainly enough of that. I suspect I've internalised a lot of it into my daily routine so I don't consciously realise I'm so stressed
but when I look at everything going on, and how stressed it was making me a few months ago, it's not unlikely

user41796
@PreferenceBean That's not a healthy amount for a short period of time ... But it's not the worst I've heard by a long shot

alcohol dependence wears off relatively fast - at least the physical causing the shakes part. If you mean "last year" as in 2 months ago and you're still getting the shakes, unless you've been binging or still drinking quite a bit recently I wouldn't attribute it to that.

@GlenH7 that'll be over six or seven hours

user41796
@PreferenceBean Just reading your comments in here, it seems like you're under a lot of pressure and have been for a while.

5:49 PM
pretty typical around my way. not saying it's good for you
@GlenH7 yeah :(

user41796
@PreferenceBean Oh. Psssh. Not that bad at all

user41796
Wife of a friend of mine was putting away a handle of whiskey every 2 - 3 days a while back

@JimmyHoffa I do still drink but I always attributed its onset to my going out three or four times per week and doing the above
and to be honest I haven't noticed much shaking in ages until today
@GlenH7 how much is a handle?

user41796
Another one was drinking that amount of vodka. She was "pacing" herself drinking throughout the day. But all day every day adds up eventually

user41796
@PreferenceBean 1.5 to 1.75 liters

5:50 PM
jesus
I think once you're habitually drinking during the day you've got problems

user41796
yeah

user41796
2nd one ended up with cirrhosis.

earliest I've drunk on a work day was a bit of vodka in my coke at 4pm ish a few weeks back because I really couldn't be arsed
but it's not like I had any more than that the rest of the day :D

@PreferenceBean this counts as a binge. If you've done that recently then the shakes can definitely be attributed to that. Physical dependence is something the body becomes attuned to - it can go away quickly, but the body's ability to go back to that dependence very quickly will be there if you built it to be as such. If your body has a chemical dependence on alcohol, and you stop for 1 month - 1 binge will reignite that dependence and likely cause detox symptoms

user41796
@PreferenceBean Both of them had some challenges that they weren't working through in all that effective of a manner

5:53 PM
Any tips on getting Tableau's support to give me the undocumented goods?

@PreferenceBean chemical dependence and actual drunkenness aren't related; that's why alcoholics can drink truckloads without getting overly tossered- they're dependent but not necessarily feeling significant effects because their body has adapted. You can get your body to adapt back to normal levels but it will quickly become dependent again because it's learned to adjust for that. Drinking a lot over long period may not cause you to be drunk, but will cause you to be dependent
the drinking-slowly-over-a-long-period thing doesn't stop your body from adapting

user41796
> plz do the needful

That's a separate ticket, I'm sure.

@JimmyHoffa sounds reasonable

user41796
@JimmyHoffa Nothing wrong with healthy dependencies...

5:56 PM
@JimmyHoffa hmm that sounds reasonable too, given that I've just massively cut my intake a few months ago?
@GlenH7 at least they're not tightly coupled

I want to change my API
wah

@GlenH7 excellent
@AaronHall Congratulations! That's even more vague than all your other requirements so far!
@AaronHall Money. Lots of money.
Also maybe some flowers?

hums the theme to Monty Python's Meaning of Life

@PreferenceBean you plausibly had a dependence a few months ago, if you binge now you'll reignite it. The significant physical symptoms of withdrawal for alcoholism wear off over ~2-4 weeks depending on the level of dependency and your individual body. But a binge would still cause your body to go back into dependence mode fast causing the withdrawal to start all over again.

5:59 PM
@JimmyHoffa how long do I have to not drink to fix it forever

user41796
@PreferenceBean define "fix it forever"

@GlenH7 to enable me to do one binge without becoming dependent again
or is that impossible now
or was it always impossible

I wish you could dislike youtube videos straight from the search results without even watching them
2

@PreferenceBean ... never drink again? :) I don't rightly know, it depends on a ton of things and I'm no doc. I'm not inclined to say the body's ability to adapt to dependence quickly goes away over time completely. The way the body adapts to dependence is through actual physical changes; it's like exercising builds muscle - that's an actual physical change you can see. The same occurs with chemical dependence, it's just not visible to the naked eye like muscle growth is.

user41796
Our bodies will become dependent upon anything consumed habitually. The key is to consume in a way that the body is able to slough whatever ill effects there may be.

6:01 PM
> In this life, what is our fate?
Is there Heaven and Hell? Do we reincarnate?
Is mankind evolving or is it too late?
Well tonight here's the meaning of life

sounds like you're saying I should drink more :)

If someone works out a lot for a long time, they'll become very muscular, if they stop altogether, it takes a significant time for the musculature to atrophy back to a pre-exercise state

user41796
@PreferenceBean Your body will always react negatively to a binge session. Everyone's does. The degree of that reaction depends upon a lot of variables. Age being one of them.

@JimmyHoffa but a depressingly short time nonetheless

@GlenH7 ooh tell me about it. just five years ago I could drink twice that and not have a hangover (and I did... frequently :/)

6:02 PM
@enderland haha true. Everyone's body is different.

(I realise the frequency part helped with the not getting a hangover part)
(but same frequency same amount last year, lots of hangover)

user41796
@PreferenceBean I'm not aging gracefully either. I was lamenting that earlier this AM

@GlenH7 :(
well, thank you for your advice

user41796
Exercise more, drink more water during the day, make sure to take B vitamins as they help offset the effects of alcohol upon the liver.

you guys are far more helpful on medical matters than on programming matters, it turns out. let's rename the site surgery.se
@GlenH7 Exerwhatnow?

user41796
6:04 PM
Exercise: Physical activity which enables you to drink more.

I was cursed with a high metabolism, and the reason that that's a curse is that I've never had to exercise to stay thin. So I've basically never exercised.
@GlenH7 Well when you put it like that...!
signs up at three gyms

user41796
Google search for "hasher running clubs" They often call themselves "Drinkers with a running problem."

People say "drinking alone" is a sign of alcoholism; I don't buy it. I find it harder to drink less in social settings, when I drink at home I never go over 2 drinks in a night. My suggestion to you would be to set a hard amount on how much you'll allow yourself in a night (not a rate - the rate doesn't effect physical dependence, it's the amount that matters). Then figure out what you enjoy enough to only have 2 of. I like whiskey, it's easy for me to sip on whiskey and stop after 2

:D
@JimmyHoffa meh I'm never good at setting specific limits

user41796
But there's a lot to be said for regular exercise to keep everything operating as it should. Esp. if you're adding regular amounts of booze to the mix.

6:05 PM
doesn't help that motivation goes down the shitter when you're drunk already

@PreferenceBean if you can't do limits, I would encourage you to stop altogether.. honestly. Limited intake or no intake are the only ways to be even remotely safe about it.

@GlenH7 I used to walk a fair bit. But since I stopped going out drinking, I am not really walking anywhere any more. heh

user41796
1 becomes 3 becomes 5 becomes eff it

@JimmyHoffa It's something I've considered. It would be a huge challenge for me though
Won't rule it out

I never get past 3

6:06 PM
@GlenH7 this
your honour

user41796
@AaronHall 1-tequila, 2-tequila, 3-tequila, floor?

well anyway I'm down at the office today so I'm off to the hotel now to keep the bar in business
so on that bombshell

No, 3 is just my limit, any time I go past it, I'm very unhappy the next day.

well who am I kidding I'll see you later on THE AWESOME MOBILE CHAT BETA

@PreferenceBean take it up to your room and play video games or something while you drink, maybe it'll be bed time before you put down 4 triple tequilas or whatever your binge would look like otherwise heh

6:08 PM
last time I went past 3 was a year ago at a party at a hedge fund

user41796
@AaronHall Caused some markets to collapse?

That was an interesting roof-top party. They had a tattoo guy in a back room, a hot-dog guy handing out hotdogs out on the deck, 2 open bars scattered around, a few kegs, a few lemonade casks filled with unlabled brightly colored fluid, and hundreds of people, about a quarter of whom were employees.
The guy running the show reminded me of these guys I knew back in college who were in their 30s and running parties with frats and student orgs.

user41796
Getting a tattoo while at a party like that sounds like a horrific idea.

> I want NYSE tattooed on my ass! Woo!

I sipped their best scotch a couple of glasses worth, then helped myself to the beer and punch...
didn't drink for a month after

user41796
6:16 PM
@AaronHall I think I would have stuck with scotch. Or had they run out?

@JimmyHoffa drinking excessively alone *

@enderland it's typically not said that way though- it's commonly said that drinking alone either means you're an alcoholic or will make you an alcoholic. Perhaps the better phrasing would be, alcoholics often drink alone.

user41796
@JimmyHoffa So does that make the introverted / antisocial into alcoholics?

@GlenH7 other way around- alcoholism often makes people antisocial

user41796
Pretty sure I was antisocial before I ever started drinking though... :-)

6:28 PM
and I am introverted and not alcoholic.. :)

user41796
But we all know that you won't can't don't handle liquor.

hehe

user41796
6:43 PM
There. I think that's a better play on words

6:56 PM
@JimmyHoffa when I'm on my own I'll stay in the room watching Supergirl (and other TV), talking here, SO-ing, working...
pop down to the bar to grab a bottle of Budvar two maybe three times over the evening
but when others are at the hotel we eat together

i haven't gotten anything worthwhile done

@JimmyHoffa it has to get pretty bad though
at least in a pub culture, if you don't drink through an evening you don't really have any friends ^_^
of course I'm massively generalising, as there are other activities in life. but I dare say most choose the pub route....
it's the de facto social setting in the UK
so if you are an alcoholic to the extent that at 10pm you can't tell yourself "no more, go home", you're going to be doing extra socialising until 1am when you're bladdered
that's three extra hours per night! :D
but yeah once it gets bad enough that you're literally just staying at home getting arseholed by yourself, odds are you're not going to actually get in anywhere let alone want to try
and you'll never see anyone
that's what I think anyway
