Good luck!
And thanks again ^^

detour visualization now looks much prettier :D

@ThomasKwa Usage of the ಠ is often (ab)used. Is that a disrespect of the Kannada alphabet?

@ӍѲꝆΛҐӍΛПҒЦꝆ Less than using a П as a N is.

I am nಠt helping.

@AlexA. ಠ_ಠ

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

FWIW I don't think using other alphabets is disrespectful to the cultures from which the alphabets originate. The only problem I see with constructing a username entirely out of such characters is that it becomes difficult to ping or refer to the person, and the name doesn't render for everyone.

¯\_(ಠ_ಠ)_/¯

@AlexA. That's also an issue

@AlexA. (that face wasn't in response to your sensible message - I just saw the two in close proximity and wanted to see what they would look like merged)

10:19 PM
I was under the impression that was the only issue

the point of names is to allow people to refer to the concept of the person by saying the name
making it more difficult doesn't help anyone

@quartata (Paraphrasing a bit) Thomas was saying that using alphabets from other languages outside of the language is disrespectful.

ugh I haven't played CS in like a week because of homework and now I'm totally out of shape and I keep missing :(

Any more answers for this?

Q: Help me Shut the Box

VoteToCloseThe inspiration for this challenge should be ridiculously obvious at the time of posting. The Task You must create a Shut the Box style program (not function, program). The basics of shut the box are: Players attempt to shut the box by turning a set of levers labelled 1-9. They must do so by f...

@VoteToClose If you need multiple people to help you close a box, you've probaby put too many things in it.

10:20 PM
@Cyoce just use the scar-20

@quartata then I get kicked :(
@VoteToClose I can't wait to see a minecraft answer with actual levers :D

xm perhaps?
or tec9

@Cyoce ...That is a brilliant idea. Gimme a sec.

Anyone here fluent in java?

@VoteToClose Somewhat fluent in Java 6, yes. Maybe a bit of 7.

@VoteToClose I know some

Is it possible to do something like (x=6) and return the value of x before the assignment?

@VoteToClose what language?

Maybe
I haven't.

@Cyoce Java

10:26 PM
hmm

Are you golfing?

@ThomasKwa Yeah. :P

@VoteToClose I haven't had to before, sorry =/

maybe [x, x=6][0] ?
I don't know java too well

I suppose you could do x+0*(x=6)
No wait, that's longer

10:29 PM
I actually figured out a shorter way anyways. :D
Thanks guys.

You're welcome

@ThomasKwa You just made me realize that I forgot to install a Japanese IME on my work PC =P

@ThomasKwa どういたしまして
@Roujo International Meme Emoji?

An input method (or input method editor, commonly abbreviated IME) is an operating system component or program that allows any data, such as keyboard strokes or mouse movements, to be received as input. In this way users can enter characters and symbols not found on their input devices. Using an input method is obligatory for any language that has more graphemes than there are keys on the keyboard. For instance, on the computer, this allows the user of Latin keyboards to input Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Indic characters; on many hand-held devices, such as mobile phones, it enables using the...

Q: Shortest possible C code to count the vowels in a string

gollumCan you shorten the C function num_vowels() according to the rules below ? #include <stdio.h> #include <ctype.h> size_t num_vowels(const char *p) { size_t c = 0; while (*p) switch (tolower(*p++)) case 'a': case 'e': case 'i': case 'o': case 'u': c++; return c; } ...

c=[2, 0, 2, 0]
print list(set(c)).remove(0)
Outputs `None`?

Huh what hello

@AlexA. Help, WarDoq!

10:36 PM
@RikerW remove mutates the list, and returns None to avoid confusion.

oh, okay.
Thanks @ThomasKwa.

@ThomasKwa I would think it does anything but avoid confusion.

@AlexA. was wrong for returning falsy value.
(null)

@Cyoce Well
it's consistent

I didn't return anything. I keep getting mentioned and I haven't even been part of the conversation.

10:37 PM
sort does the same thing
actually, that's where I got the exact wording from
> It modifies the list in-place (and returns None to avoid confusion).

@NewMainPosts sorry about this question guys, was a misunderstanding from some CR users

@AlexA. Yeah, you returned nothing, a falsy value.

Alright then

@Quill how? Did they auto-redirect golfing to here?

10:39 PM
they saw "shortest code length" and thought PPCG
I totally foresaw dupe closure, though.

Okay.

oh hey, I'm on the starboard again

Welp, thanks for the notice.

@Quill Code Review has a migration path set up for PPCG?

lol
Yes?
Apparently,

10:41 PM
He could have just reposted here.
By a migration path I mean that users can specifically flag a post for migration to another SE site.

Lets set up a migration path to code review.

^

And they can do the same to here.

To send them their trash back.

10:41 PM
lol

We don't have a migration path set up, the amount of stuff we'd move is slim.

I just got a nice answer badge on meta.

@Doᴡɴɢᴏᴀᴛ The view vote total part of the script applies on every SE site.
@flawr I got a badge there too, the necromancer one.

and it was a user suggestion, I think moderators would've pinged one of you PPCG mods in the Teacher's Lounge whether it was on-topic before moving it

For my martin sandbox post.

Good night everyone.

It sickens me to see SO questions/answers obsessing about speed, not golfiness.

'Night @flawr, and may crashing planes be the stars in your sky. (not directed at you though, maybe CR instead?)

@flawr Good night!

Q: Why does YouTube hide "Ad displayed" or "Ad can be skipped messages" under the header?

VoteToCloseScrolling about one day I noticed some text beneath the header of the YouTube page: When I release the scroll, the underlay of the page returns to normal and the text is hidden once more. Is that like an ass kicking?

@VoteToClose Say I use the command s on the empty stack in Vitsy. What happens?

lel

What does the name "Vitsy" mean?

It's a programming language made by VTC and included in his resume.

11:14 PM
I know, but whats the meaning/etymology of the word? (@VoteToClose)

I think it derives from "VTC".

I was hoping vesty

@El'endiaStarman That's what I've always assumed
@Calvin'sHobbies What is "vesty"?
Is this another one of those things that you're going to make me look up, like "socking"?

11:16 PM
@AlexA. the thing you are when wearing lots of vests

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ That'd be sine, so it'd throw an ArrayOutOfBoundsException.

Oh I hate VB.NET arrays. How many elements do you think an Test(1023) As Byte array has? That's right! 1024 -.- ...

@mınxomaτ wat

@mınxomaτ So an empty array is Test(-1) As Byte?

11:32 PM
@Calvin'sHobbies An empty array is an un-dimensioned array (()). (0) has one element.

Are polyglot built-ins allowed by default?

@Doᴡɴɢᴏᴀᴛ That's a thing? o-O

Also,Mathematica10.1'stocamelcaseShouldActuallyBeCalledtopascalcase

Mahematica's new built-in

@AlexA. TheseMessagesHaveBeenRunThroughtocamelcase
@mınxomaτ It'sUndocumented,AndDoesn'tWorkIn10.2OrLater

TIL that function is for constructing Mathematica function names. ToCamelCase["compute the dot product of two vectors"] produces the Mathematica function ComputeTheDotProductOfTwoVectors[].

Q: Say What You See

Surely a (near) dupe?

The last time this was posted, it was closed as a duplicate of a previous one that was fixed output (first 20 numbers only).
This one is definitely a duplicate of that closed one

Just closevoted as dupe

Odd that it's a (proposed) dupe of two questions, and that those questions are not dupes of one another
I guess "slightly different" + "slightly different" = "different enough"

Is it not acceptable to have a challenge with a restriction, and also the same challenge without?

It's perfectly acceptable, if it isn't a dupe

Do you know the question for determing if it's a dupe?

You mean posting a previous answer and it still being competitive?

"Can answers from one question be copied over to the other with little or no modification and still be competitive?"

Now it depends how much counts as little modification...
The point free answers surely wouldn't be competitive, and would require significant modification.

I wouldn't try to hammer the subjectiveness out of it. You'll never be able to. At some point you just have to vote

11:49 PM
Yeah... I just have a habit of thinking aloud. I should really learn to think in my head

I have a habit of pushing my opinions on those who think out loud

It's useful - keep it up
Having had another look, both of the suggested dupe targets are horrifically restrictive.
