7:00 PM
@mınxomaτ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ಠ_ಠ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
are there any more of those

@AlexA. I'm looking

@quartata idk, was hoping for help

@ThomasKwa ありがとう!

someone posted it to reddit but they don't know either

7:01 PM
@TheDoctor I'm too scared to click on it :P
Is it that weird puzzle thing again?

How does become real Python master very fastly?

how does become real English master

there's this @Alex

(For real, what are some good resources for getting really good at Python really quickly?)
@ThomasKwa Hm. Not what I was thinking of. The R solution to VTC's recent challenge is something I know I've written here before for an identical challenge, I just can't seem to find it.

@AlexA. Free?

7:05 PM
@mınxomaτ Preferably, yeah
I could be open to paid resources as well provided they aren't prohibitively expensive.

@ETHproductions ~A & B = B - A, for bitwise NOT and AND and when B >= A, but the way we implemented NAND, A NAND A != bitwise NOT A. Should this change, do you think? (For NTFJ)

@AlexA. Are you thinking of a snippet from this?

@ThomasKwa Hm, maybe. I could have sworn I've done the zeros thing specifically though

@AlexA. I've been recommended this one: learnpythonthehardway.org/book

@mınxomaτ THANK YOU!!

7:10 PM
@mınxomaτ That's Python 2

I need Python 2
So that's perfect

Oh, good

Python 3 > Python 2, because 3 > 2 :3

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ no

I actually prefer Python 3, but for my current purposes I need 2

7:11 PM
AFAIK py.3 has different print syntax than py.2. Anything else different?

I prefer no python.

@ӍѲꝆΛҐӍΛПҒЦꝆ It's disrespectful to the cultures that own those languages.
The letters actually mean something

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ it's looser and golfier. e.g. you can mix tabs and spaces for indentation, with 1 tab ~= 8 spaces

Λ is a lambda
it sounds like an l

7:13 PM
@ThomasKwa I don't think we need to go self-righteous on languages...

not an A

@ThomasKwa I wouldn't consider it disrespectful. I just find it annoying. :P

Making emoticons using the shape of letters is one thing

@VoteToClose thanks for joining right now that reminds me I need to get off my ass and implement custom arg parsing so AST works

7:13 PM
bye

You changed your avatar! :D @quartat

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ not just print, but some other built-in functions work more like operators, such as eval and exec

@Cyoce Oh, cool!

@quartata For what?

We all enjoy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, even though we're not using the character in the middle as a tsu

7:14 PM
xis the repr function

@ThomasKwa That's not small tsu, it's regular tsu. ツ

@VoteToClose posted my answer ;)

uggh how do I do this
surrounding something with backticks stringifies it

スアッテ <- that's small tsu

` `something` `

7:16 PM
but ignoring the meaning of letters and using them for their resemblance to your own shows an ignorance of where they came from.
Thanks @Alex

I give up, someone tell me how to read “ӍѲꝆΛҐӍΛПҒЦꝆ”.

Molarmanful
2

@ThomasKwa So why not pick on me? ;) I do the same thing.

Ahh

What is that starred? That's what it is. :P

7:17 PM
@AlexA. chat bot

@muddyfish It's pretty awesome. c: Can you make a pull request to my repository with the source code?

@AlexA. No one kew.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Hm? Where?

The L's don't even show up for me

@quartata Oh, okay. I'll miss you. Come back soon.

7:18 PM
@Lynn I have no idea honestly I've tried all the devices in my house and none of them render it correctly

@Lynn It was even worse before.

Same. ;-;

My computer does it fine but my phone hates it.

@Lynn @Doᴡɴɢᴏᴀᴛ's name looks like @DoNG to me.
9

Haha, I see that one, mysteriously

7:20 PM
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I still don't understand why Unicode decided it was a good idea to include a bunch of weird characters

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I know ESMin's name doesn't render for me

ಠ◡ಠ

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

7:20 PM
@quartata Because weird characters are best characters

@VoteToClose sure

ಠ_ಠ

@quartata Probably compatibility! Depends which characters you think are weird, though

(╯ಠ ͜ʖಠ)╯︵ ┻━┻

@Lynn I'm talking the 100+ different emojis
I forget the code points

7:21 PM
@AlexA. that looks hideous

Most of the “small caps” are actually used in the International Phonetic Alphabet, I think

Those were included out of necessity
@Cyoce :(

@ThomasKwa C o (Uvular nasal) o (Uvular trill) O ' B (Uvular trill) (Near-close near-front unrounded vowel) (Latin Letter Small Capital E) (Uvular nasal). Maybe not, I remembered wrong.

@quartata To standardize how emoji should be sent over text =)

@AlexA. It seemed shorter when I wrote it offline. Yet my most popular answer is the three byte infinite brainfuck loop...

7:22 PM
@Roujo Why can't you phone people be satisfied with text emojis
Do we really need knife emojis and cats and forks and bus signs

@Lynn Yeah, but a lot are in the pronunciation key thing

@quartata I don't know, but by then they were in standard use already anyway

@quartata yes

@AlexA. ok

You never know when you need to text your friend that you've knifed a cat on the bus.

7:22 PM
They took what already existed and standardized it to help with interop

Well, they are used, so it's more or less Unicode's job description to universally enode them.

^

Oh, CS.SE got colours! :)

@MartinBüttner Yeah, the new design is pretty neat =)

7:23 PM
@Lynn wat

What the hell

The best emojum.

hahaha
Is emojum the singular of emoji?

No, I made that up :<

emoxen

7:24 PM
No, it's emoju

@Lynn lolwat

@Lynn It's perfect

> That kind of behaviour is, of course, inevitable in any kind of Innarwebs™® interaction. Pseudo-anonymity makes doorknobs of otherwise-normal people. There is something else, however, in the whole Stack Exchange hierarchy that bugs me: the creeping authoritarianism.
Hah!

emojus if it's male, emoja if it's female, emojum if it's neuter

Well, in the second case, the plural'd be emojae

7:25 PM
And emojip if you're hip.

@mınxomaτ @Doorknob

@Lynn true

emojiⁿ, where n is the number of emojiⁿ used - left as ⁿ if the number is unknown

"Emojo" sounds like something Austin Powers would use in a text.

The chat notification sound here is so satisfying~

7:26 PM
I KNOW

How can I turn that on? =)

@AlexA. emojdo - where emojae fight

@Roujo Click that speaker icon
@AlexA. Emo.O

in The Bridge, 57 secs ago, by badp
"Lol this is really slow I'll fix it with memoization!!"

It's a good little Genesis-ish sound

7:27 PM
@Cyoce Emodojo, where sad musicians fight

python in a nutshell
@Lynn It does kinda sound like that sound when Sonic bounces off a spring
Assuming you were referring to Sega Genesis

Yeah!

@VoteToClose pull request made

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ to me, that's even less questionable than the shrug emoticon. The small caps are used for that purpose, but the use isn't so ubiquitous and tied to the letter to make it the meaning of the characters. Small caps have plenty of other purposes.

@mınxomaτ Great, thanks ^^

7:29 PM
@ThomasKwa How do you feel about ArtOfCode's sister, who uses the display name Åna?

@AlexA. Is that actually pronounced “o-na” or is it just “Ana with a fancy ring over the A”?

@AlexA. Is it pronounced correctly?

@ThomasKwa Who knows? I think her actual name is Ana though.

@ThomasKwa I don't share your opinion. As long as you're not voluntarily making fun of the languages and/or people involved, using glyphs for uses they weren't intended for isn't a lack of respect or an issue to me. It feels like art, a creative expression. It's even better if it does fit, or if it's pronounced the right way, but I don't think it should be required.

There's a smorgasbord of words where English just completely neglects the å.

7:34 PM
@Lynn I see what you did there

( ͡° v ͡°)

@Roujo I don't

In Molarmanful's case, people's negative-ish reaction to the name is enough for me without having to appeal to a sense of respect which people might or might not agree with.

@Lynn I'm assuming "smorgasbord" means "a lot" and has a thingie over the "a"

Oh wait

7:35 PM
@Cyoce Yep. It's actually a kind of buffet but people use it to mean “varied collection”

@Roujo I think most people are OK with a bit of Unicode (minxomat's name has some actually) but molar's doesn't show up right on most devices and is a little annoying

I'm just realizing that it's possible to use MAN IN BUSINESS SUIT LEVITATING as an exclamation mark of sorts🕴

:O

@Cyoce do you actually not know what a smorgasbord is
Or just didn't know that it had an accent on the a

@ThomasKwa Ah.

7:37 PM
@quartata no I only know platypar detour javascript and english. also platypus anatomy

Do you not know platapus anatomy?

@Cyoce learn Jolf

@quartata My point exactly. Using glyphs in annoying places is reason enough to disagree with their use. I don't see a need for deeper justifications, since it can turn into a debate re: whether those are founded or not - as they did here =P
@quartata I didn't know what that was until I learned about it, either.

1 min ago, by Cyoce
@quartata no I only know platypar detour javascript and english. also platypus anatomy

@Roujo I don't think anyone knows what anything is until they learn about it. :P

7:39 PM
I speak English and I use smorgasbord in casual speech all the time to mean "a varied selection"

@quartata You're British?

no

@AlexA. ... s/about it/about it recently/ Oops. =P

haha
@quartata rekt

quartata = british chap confirmed
Or should I say "validated"? :P

7:40 PM
quarteatime

I like tea.

Same
What's your favorite kind?

I pretty much like all kinds except rooibos

@quartata I don't like tea. :(

Likewise. I have a cup of green tea next to me, as I do most days.

7:42 PM
I like tea

woo!

@quartata >:O Rooibos is good

Company stopped supplying us programmers with free coffee, so I switched =P
5

@AlexA. Sorry I'm just not a big fan

7:42 PM
@quartata Ok

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ there you go

Mint tea is so good! Don't know if it's a popular thing universally.

I'm still happy: Rien number is 2^5 votes

and now you have 6.5K+

7:43 PM
@Lynn My girlfriend likes it. I like it on occasion but it isn't something I have often.

@Lynn I've had it before and liked it but dunno if it's a popular thing here in the states

@Cyoce I also have -1K+ O^O

I see

@AlexA. woah an xkcd I haven't seen before :O

Usually, I drink black teas, I guess. With lots of honey!!

7:44 PM

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I have 0.8K+

@mınxomaτ /me is living proof

@Lynn Oh shit dawg black tea with honey is boss as fuck
@Doorknob O__O

@quartata really? I see people get like 10 upvotes by answering super simple questions all the time

> super simple questions that get closed as dupes within a day

7:46 PM
You must hang out in high traffic tags. :P

I'm just talking about looking at the main page of SO

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Change how, exactly? I'm not sure exactly what the other formula would be.

@quartata hah, within a day? If it's not closed within 15 minutes, it most likely never will be. :P

I have like twice the necessary number of R answers to get the silver R badge but like a quarter of the score.

@AlexA. I had the opposite problem here on PPCG with gold . P

7:46 PM
@ETHproductions Just use ~(A&B), I guess. I don't know how else subtraction would be possible.

@Doorknob day 15 minutes it's all the same

@AlexA. there are badges for languages?

@Cyoce Tag badges

@Cyoce Yeah, because on SO there are language-specific tags

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ That makes the result negative

7:47 PM
@ETHproductions That's means it's signed use unsigned

BTW: Is there a "simpler" algorithm for non-optimal, but acceptable text justification than Knuth-Plass (TeX)?

How do you make something unsigned in JS anyways

Remove the sign

@quartata You don't because JS sucks :P

@quartata How do I make an unsigned bNOT operator? Just remove the sign?

7:48 PM
@Doorknob how dare you

@ETHproductions I don't know
In C you just slap an unsigned on the variable declarations

to remove the sign use Math.abs

@Cyoce how dare I what, speak the truth? ;)

@Cyoce ... he means how do you make a variable unsigned

REKT SON

7:49 PM
@Doorknob how dare you blasphemize js

JS is bad and everyone knows it

@Cyoce I hope you're kidding. I think even JS developers agree that JS is trash

Removing the sign == -~(a&b) == (a&b)+1 :P

@ETHproductions True...

@quartata oh. but JS is dynamically typed so your point is moot

7:50 PM
@ETHproductions Yeah just do -(~(a&b)+1) I guess

Math.abs() ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"Just"

Gotta flex your mathematical abs
4

and what exactly is wrong with A-B ?

@Cyoce ???

7:51 PM
@quartata That's exactly equivalent to a&b :P

What do you mean by “unsigned not”?

@quartata ???

@Lynn He wants the numbers to be unsigned but JS treats them as signed

@quartata I agree with this.

@AlexA. ???

7:51 PM
let ᕙ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ᕗ(x) = Math.abs(x)

@ETHproductions Oh oops
Sorry I'm stupid

this hasn't been in the sandbox for very long, but it seems straightforward enough that I don't see what could go wrong. any comments before I post it?

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Martin BüttnerSpiral Permutation Sequence code-golfnumbersequence We can roll up the natural numbers in a rectangular spiral: 17--16--15--14--13 | | 18 5---4---3 12 | | | | 19 6 1---2 11 | | | 20 7---8---9--10 | 21--22--23--24--25 But now that we ...

Well, what should ~0 be, if not -1?

@Lynn 255 since we're talking bytes here I think

0xFFFFFFFF or something?

7:52 PM
the great martin buettner graces us with his sandbox

@quartata It's okay. We forgive alex for anything he does so we can forgive you for being stupid.

@MartinBüttner I like bananas when they're still a little bit green

Oh. Then just XOR by 0xFF

@RikerW Whoa, not a nice thing to say.

I guess we could do a big conditional like ((a>>7)||(b>>7)?255:(a>>6)||(b>>6)?127:...)-(a&b)

7:53 PM
@AlexA. ummm. okay.

@MartinBüttner You asked for comments.

@Lynn oh yeah..

I'll remember to insert the word "constructive" next time. Thanks anyway. ;)

@AlexA. See edits

@MartinBüttner I could probably come up with something both constructive and irrelevant. Better to say "specific to the post."

7:54 PM
@MartinBüttner Or you can take it as "Like bananas, I like my challenges not entirely ripened"

that got votes fast o.O

@Roujo like bananas, I eat my challenges when they are no longer of use to me

^

@Cyoce Like challenges, I like to reduce by bananas to their smallest-but-still-nutritious expression
2

Like air, I breathe out upvotes onto everything.

7:55 PM
> forgive you for being stupid
I mean it's not nice what you said to quartata.

Would anybody like to be used instead of martin for this challenge?
@AlexA. He called himself stupid.
But sorry quartata.

@RikerW memeified? o_O

@RikerW I submit myself to memification

Requirement: Must have good jingle to go with name.
@Cyoce We could test if the image is a platypus, hmm...

@Cyoce is it pronounced "Ky-oz", "Ky-os (hard s)", "Sy-oz", or "Sy-os"?

7:58 PM
@RikerW if (image.IsMammal && image.LaysEggs) { profit(); }

I got a badge for that post.
@Roujo lol

In the 60s, Marvin Minsky assigned a couple of undergrads to spend the summer programming a computer to use a camera to identify objects in a scene. He figured they'd have the problem solved by the end of the summer. Half a century later, we're still working on it.
2

wait, profit???
DON"t ABUSE PLATYPUSI
@AlexA. So true...

@RikerW Calling oneself stupid and having it reinforced by someone else are two very different things.
