In physics, charge conservation is the principle that electric charge can neither be created nor destroyed. I'm honestly surprised that thermal throttling is significantly limiting the performance of my Nexus 5X.

Put a cold pack on the phone during the benchmark and it scores much higher on AuTuTu.

All flagship phones for the past 4-5 years have been thermally limited, it's the whole Core M design philosophy

The surface temperature of the phone, however, is not high at all. Is the phone throttling too aggressively?

Depends what temperature the CPU reaches really

(This is in contrast to my Nexus 9, which is just as prone to thermal throttling, but will let the SoC exceed 80 C causing the tablet to get so hot near the top right that one could conceivably get low-temperature burns from prolonged contact with the device.)

...and this isn't a flagship phone. It's a Nexus 5X, with a Snapdragon 808.

The Nexus 6P, which is a flagship model, is equipped with the SD810, and can get very hot during operation.

Like I said, all of the Snapdragon 800 series do, because they're all variants of the same chip

My Nexus 5X gets very warm (but not quite hot) under load.

The 400 and 600 series are fine

They can all throttle, no mobile processors are designed to sustain maximum performance for prolonged periods

The Nexus 6P is better than most, though, and some devices can get so hot that they can cause burns.

I was thinking about some kind of convection cooling solution with little holes near the bezel of the phone to allow the SoC to vent heat, as well as better heat-sinking of the SoC.

There was never a reference cooler for the 970, so the one you linked is just a 980 cooler slapped on.

A few OEMs made GTX 970's with GTX 980 board layouts, hence the 980 cooler.

The GTX970-only PCB is much smaller.

So they had a reference one for their own specs and photos, and presumably testing, and a different reference design for actual release/manufacturing.

And at some point someone (Dell? One of their suppliers?) got their hands on the photographed design.

Shoddy cooler fitting?

Nah, reference design, which wasn't entirely reference. They used slightly thicker capacitors, but not thick enough for EKWB to notice.

So they listed it on their compatibility list because it looked like the reference card, without realising the caps were 0.5mm too wide. Then they removed it from the compatibility list later... but not before I bought the combo :-/

So I ended up with a waterblock that claimed to be compatible but actually needed me to bend some caps to get it to fit.

And I was too tired/lazy/impatient to return either for a swap.

AnTuTu version 6 benchmark results for the Nexus 5X. These are under ideal conditions (top of device wrapped in cold pack, CPU governor set to performance) so you probably won't get scores this high under normal testing.

With thermal throttling, you'll probably get less than 60,000.

Wanted your guys opinion if I made my answer different enough from what I suspect is the solution to a question. I only submitted an answer myself because, the answer only tells you what to do, but not the reason or how to determine if its even required. I provided credit to the answer submitted first, but I did expand on it a great deal, the answer just felt like it needed more work then a bunch of comments to that answer would result in.
