@qasdfdsaq It isn't because...
Because E=mc²
In physics, charge conservation is the principle that electric charge can neither be created nor destroyed. The net quantity of electric charge, the amount of positive charge plus the amount of negative charge in the universe, is always conserved. The first written statement of the principle was by American scientist and statesman Benjamin Franklin in 1747. it is now discovered and demonstrated, both here and in Europe, that the Electrical Fire is a real Element, or Species of Matter, not created by the Friction, but collected only. Charge conservation is a physical law that states that the change...
"Although conservation of charge requires that the total quantity of charge in the universe is constant, it leaves open the question of what that quantity is. Most evidence indicates that the net charge in the universe is zero; that is, there are equal quantities of positive and negative charge."
> This does not mean that individual positive and negative charges cannot be created or destroyed. Electric charge is carried by subatomic particles such as electrons and protons, which can be created and destroyed.
Anonymous
@qasdfdsaq well yeah mass is energy
Anonymous
@qasdfdsaq then a more correct phrasing would have been that the net charge of the universe is still zero
00:05
"The Law of Conservation of Charge does not mean that electric charge can't be created or destroyed. It just means that every time some negative electric charge is created, an equal amount of positive electric charge must be created at the same time so that the total charge of a system does not change."

I'm honestly surprised that thermal throttling is significantly limiting the performance of my Nexus 5X.
Put a cold pack on the phone during the benchmark and it scores much higher on AuTuTu.
I'm not really surprised at all
All flagship phones for the past 4-5 years have been thermally limited, it's the whole Core M design philosophy
The surface temperature of the phone, however, is not high at all. Is the phone throttling too aggressively?
Depends what temperature the CPU reaches really
(This is in contrast to my Nexus 9, which is just as prone to thermal throttling, but will let the SoC exceed 80 C causing the tablet to get so hot near the top right that one could conceivably get low-temperature burns from prolonged contact with the device.)
...and this isn't a flagship phone. It's a Nexus 5X, with a Snapdragon 808.
The Snapdragon 810 is known for running extremely hot.
Yes, because it's the same Snapdragon 8xx chipset that's used in flagship phones.
01:39
The Nexus 6P, which is a flagship model, is equipped with the SD810, and can get very hot during operation.
Like I said, all of the Snapdragon 800 series do, because they're all variants of the same chip
My Nexus 5X gets very warm (but not quite hot) under load.
The 400 and 600 series are fine
Well... mostly
They can all throttle, no mobile processors are designed to sustain maximum performance for prolonged periods
The Nexus 6P is better than most, though, and some devices can get so hot that they can cause burns.
Anonymous
@bwDraco advances should be made in low-profile thermal dissipation
Anonymous
01:51
even though I dunno if there are still advances to be made in thermodynamics/engineering
I was thinking about some kind of convection cooling solution with little holes near the bezel of the phone to allow the SoC to vent heat, as well as better heat-sinking of the SoC.
Anonymous
@bwDraco or maybe fill the phone with something that gives it thermal "mass" without the added weight
Anonymous
even tho it'd make the phones hard to repair
Directly heat-sinking the SoC to a metal case, however, could cause the surface of the phone to get dangerously hot (potentially hot enough to cause burns with just a few seconds of contact).
Adding mass without adding mass. Hmm. Logical
Anonymous
01:54
@qasdfdsaq you are getting annoying

I believe HTC made some adjustments to the thermal throttling point to address the issue in shipping units (the tested phone was a pre-release model).

Odd.
I just looked up "GTX 970 reference" on Google images :P

Nah.
This is a reference GTX 970 PCB
There was never a reference cooler for the 970, so the one you linked is just a 980 cooler slapped on.
A few OEMs made GTX 970's with GTX 980 board layouts, hence the 980 cooler.

""NVIDIA 970 Cooler Edition" 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card"
"This very special NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 is the only one of its kind designed by our in-house VGA Guru Gibbo making this the worlds ONLY genuine reference 970 available in the world. Gibbo's design request were very specific, genuine NVIDIA 970 cooler, yes the crazy expensive one just like the 980 cooler and a NVIDIA BGA Board using all original NVIDIA components with absolute zero cost down in the design. "
Bob
Bob
02:51
Hm.
All I know is it's the one that Nvidia has put images of on their own site.
There was a lot of fudging around.
Bob
Bob
And their own site lists the (presumably reference) specs as including 3x DP.
They maayyy have added those a few months after release
Bob
Bob
Which doesn't match your supposedly-reference card.
Odd. Maybe different revision.
> Furthermore, as we mentioned in our GTX 980 review, GTX 970 has been a pure virtual (no reference card) launch, which means all of NVIDIA’s partners are launching their custom cards right out of the gate. A lot of these have been recycled or otherwise only slightly modified GTX 700/600 series designs, owing to the fact that GM204’s memory bus has been held at 256-bits and its power requirements are so low.
Bob
Bob
02:52

02:54
Weird. Really weird.
> Nvidia usually only sells reference versions of their flagship cards. In this case, their flagship card is the GTX 980. As far as I know, a 970 reference doesn't really exist on the consumer end.
Evidently there's a reference PCB based on the GTX 980, and a reference PCB based on... well... itself.
Bob
Bob
lol
The GTX970-only PCB is much smaller.
Bob
Bob
So they had a reference one for their own specs and photos, and presumably testing, and a different reference design for actual release/manufacturing.
And at some point someone (Dell? One of their suppliers?) got their hands on the photographed design.
If only they had them at release...
Bob
Bob
02:57
Or reproduced it to look identical.
Actually I only bought mine like 3 months after release.
But either way, if there were a true reference card, I wouldn't have one with bent capacitors right now -_-
Bob
Bob
o.O
Shoddy cooler fitting?
Nah, reference design, which wasn't entirely reference. They used slightly thicker capacitors, but not thick enough for EKWB to notice.
So they listed it on their compatibility list because it looked like the reference card, without realising the caps were 0.5mm too wide. Then they removed it from the compatibility list later... but not before I bought the combo :-/
So I ended up with a waterblock that claimed to be compatible but actually needed me to bend some caps to get it to fit.
And I was too tired/lazy/impatient to return either for a swap.
03:43
AnTuTu version 6 benchmark results for the Nexus 5X. These are under ideal conditions (top of device wrapped in cold pack, CPU governor set to performance) so you probably won't get scores this high under normal testing.
With thermal throttling, you'll probably get less than 60,000.
