@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. I answered it — with the deciding delete vote to cast it into the abyss.

Q: Why is the pronunciation of the O in "move" different from in "bone"?

jackI have read about the silent "e" rule. So, in the word "bone", it seems to work with "o" having its letter sound. But, we say "move" as in "moov". Why this difference? Is it historical or due to some rule?

interestingly the French cognate has /u/ too
as with "prove"

> Onlookers via Facebook quickly caught the slip-up, and shamed Nikon and the photographer by ‘shopping the image themselves.
Shopping may have another meaning this decade.
(BTW, how hard would it be to 'shop the photo better than that?! Could it be that the slip-up is fake or something?)

2 hours later…

I read the comment about closing the question " because it's a grammar golf". Why "golf"?@DamkerngT.,thanks for your answers.

@V.V. It alludes to another stack: Code Golf.
Basically, it's like golfing.

Aha! @DamkerngT., I thought you were sleeping. It's morning with us.

My sleep cycle is always erratic.
It's a blessed curse, perhaps. :D

What is it in your time zone?

10:20

3:20 AM
Night?

Day

Ah,plus four hours to mine.

I always have good Internet in the morning.

Low traffic volume in the neighborhood, I guess. :D

3:24 AM
@DamkerngT., what is T, your name?

My family name. It's very long, so T is good enough. :D

What is your name in short, then?

Damkerng is fine. :D
DT is also fine, if you'd like.

Nice, sometimes names have meaning. What about yours?

Its meaning in my first language is "noble, civilized, flourishing".

3:30 AM
It suits you OK, the first two.

Thanks!
I wanna ask about yours too, but perhaps later. I have to leave (but my avatar will stay). Feel free to leave questions for me when I'm away. Have a nice chat! See you later.

@DamkerngT., have a good time!

Thanks! You too!

@jims This question is simply Is it a run-on or not. What additional information do you think it needs?

Q: Is this a run on? if so how to fix while maintaining flow

Nithin Not for selfish or base pleasures, but to enrich both his or her own life and, more importantly, to enrich the lives of his loved ones, community, and the world.

@JimReynolds Did you vote to reopen?
If you did, I don't know why you pinged me about this. Other people will see it in the reopen queue, and will make a decision. Unless you believe that this question is time-sensitive? I'm not trying to be hostile, but exercise common courtesy before you decide to knock on someone's door. Feel free to leave a message here, but... the ping is excessive.

11:30 AM
> I think the father has got the black eye from the big boy too.
I wonder if "has got" is okay or the simple "got" is better.
The meaning is: "the big boy left the father with a black eye".

@V.V. Dam
Not to be confused with what you think people confuse it with.

A dam is a barrier that impounds water or underground streams. Reservoirs created by dams not only suppress floods but also provide water for such activities as irrigation, human consumption, industrial use, aquaculture, and navigability. Hydropower is often used in conjunction with dams to generate electricity. A dam can also be used to collect water or for storage of water which can be evenly distributed between locations. Dams generally serve the primary purpose of retaining water, while other structures such as floodgates or levees (also known as dikes) are used to manage or prevent water flow...

@Dam is beautiful.

:D
Dams are everywhere. :P

11:45 AM
Uh, never mind, then, jimsug. I guess I'm not up on ping etiquette, but I doubt it will happen again.

@JimReynolds ?

Hiya

Oh.
Hey

Lovely @Dam
The water-impounding barrier is also not bad.
O.O

Meet dams' little brother: Dikes
:D

11:51 AM
@Dikes isn't pingable. :'(
Does he hate chemicals?

I'm not sure. He doesn't talk much.

Haha

12:02 PM
Code golf. Cool!

Not really
That site's a dumpster

This is the first I've heard of it.

Hopefully the last time.

(Icily) Why not, @Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ.?

12:04 PM
A DUMPSTER. How ... dare ... you?

OMG I DID IT
I actually enraged @JimR.

Can't you insult it in fewer bytes?
:D

Winner!

In the InsultScript language, that prints all of the swear words that existed in the history of 57 languages.

12:07 PM
(Your mere presence is an insult!)
Lol
If anyone could invent that script, you could.

I have an audio clip which I'm not sure about some parts. I'd be thankful if someone could solve this mystery for me.

@JimReynolds I can't see any breach of etiquette.

@DamkerngT. Ooh, I'll try! :-)

Thanks in advance!

Trying a third browser now

12:17 PM
Third!?!

@snailboat Edge?
Wedge?

No, Chrome.

Anonymous
Hey, it worked in Chrome.

Chromium, you mean.

Anonymous
No.

12:18 PM
Oh, I thought it worked in any browser. (It works in Firefox.)

Anonymous
@DamkerngT. You can't make a slightly longer clip, can you?

@snailboat Yes, but it's all there is, because it's just a soundbite.

Anonymous
@DamkerngT. everybody's

A-ha!
I heard Kick her already's ass, and I thought to myself, "That doesn't make any sense"!
Thanks a lot!

Anonymous
Does it appear in any sort of context?

12:21 PM
Yes, it's in the female wrestling context. Her name is Ronda Rousey, I think.
(Not sure about the spelling. Lemme check.)

Anonymous
I can't tell you what he says. All I can hear is "When you don't learn".

Anonymous
But it's too difficult for me to really tell.

That part is really hard for me. I think it's something an announcer would say when someone wins the match TKO.
I don't know if the video helps. Lemme try...
(I don't know if the link will work okay. The video is about 6.3 MB) drive.google.com/file/d/0B8KKQ0fwLEZ9d3NwMEQycmtNdzQ/…

12:39 PM
"Kick everybody's ass."

12:53 PM
I think her "b" was elided.

Hehe! Best answer is in a comment once again! :D

1 hour later…
2:08 PM
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ.Mocking?

I'm finally going to do it.
@V.V. What?
Mocking what?

At me?

I never mock people.
Often.
Might be misunderstood humor/satire. Which message are you talking about @V.V.?

Yeah, a good boy.
A picture of a dam.

Well, I call @Dam @Dam, and you asked for a short name, so @Dam it is.

2:28 PM
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Three Dam's in one message!

@DamkerngT. And they say dams are big.

Most of them are!

3:10 PM
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ., it was a joke. I was checking the meaning of the verb "mock".

No problem since I didn't take it seriously anyway.

What about the word "chaffer ".@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ.?

@V.V. I don't recommend using it. It's too old.

What. Is the positive word?

I wasn't hinting at connotation, I was hinting at idiomaticity.

3:20 PM
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ.?

What?

Chatter is a nice word, if used in a right context
> And now approaches the radiant band, all spinster,
White spirits weaving a delirious rhythm of chatter
Of picture galleries and of Westminster--
But my sad, alas, insensitivity is too utter,
I attend you as some tired jungle monster:
The parrots' bonnets are annulled by the tedium of their chatter.
oops
its chaffer
my eyesight is mocking me
Verb: chaffer ‎(third-person singular simple present chaffers, present participle chaffering, simple past and past participle chaffered)
  1. (intransitive) To haggle or barter.
  2. Dryden
  3. To chaffer for preferments with his gold.
  4. 1985, Anthony Burgess, Kingdom of the Wicked:
  5. But the people looked much like Caleb’s own. They wore dirty robes, chaffered at fruit stalls, spat, scratched.
(4 more not shown…)
Noun: chaffer
  1. bargaining; merchandise
  2. (Can we find and add a quotation of Holinshed to this entry?)
  3. chaffer ‎(plural chaffers)
  4. (agriculture) The upper sieve of a cleaning shoe in a combine harvester, where chaff is removed

You might be chaffering on this land of chatrooms.

I didn't know the word but I needed it for translation (beginning of the 20 century ).

@V.V. Well, that's Pauling's era.
And Planck.

3:23 PM
It is a strange word, I never came across it before.

IOW, ancient.

Yes, ancient, even before Playstation II

@CopperKettle It's just how Shakespeare bargains.
Nice way of putting it. It's even before the Mission impossible sequel.

(0:
Even before Mission Impossible prequel.
I mean, the Odyssey

I posted the question 3days ago.Got one answer.

4:09 PM
@CopperKettle, what's the weather like in your region?

@V.V. Cold.
Frigid.
Russian.

@V.V. Unusually mild today, minus 10C
It will be close to 0C in two days' time. Fantastic.
The usual weather for these days is minus 20 and below.

@CopperKettle I feel jealous.
It gets to -12 here.

I jogged twice today! Yay! (0:

We had -25C two days ago.and+3 with showers yesterday.

4:11 PM
@V.V. Minus 25C?! I thougth you were in India.

@V.V. Whoa,
Are you in Mars?

Ah. Got it. You're a Russian too. (0:

@CopperKettle, we have the same blood,but I live in the European part.

I live just about 40 kilometers from the European part.

Oh, I really thought you were Indian @V.V.
'Cause you know, on SE, you're Indian unless proven otherwise. :P

4:14 PM
haha

I saw your photos.

O_O
Oh, you mean @Cop's
Phew

I should get a sari then. They are beautiful

Yes, they are.

No, he wrote about the city.

4:18 PM
Okay, I'll read me some chemistry. (0:

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ.,MAR, are you disappointed?

Disappointed about the quality of the answers on ELL? Yes.

And questions?

Don't even get me started.

Sorry?

4:24 PM
TL;DR; I really loved if people bothered to formulate their question better and answerers bothered to write up real answers.
Bad threads might not be a lot, but they're cancerous. They'll grow, and take over ELL, just like what a cancer does to a body.

You seem to be a perfectionist.

I am not.
But I am wary of the fact that people are not wary when they should be.

It's a high level.
What's the time in your place?

@V.V. No it is not. I'm not asking people to right perfect questions.
I like people to bring out their best when they're writing.
I know that most of our frequent askers can do better.
But they don't. Why?
Because we don't expect much from them.
So they tell themselves "why bother myself when they don't want much from me?"

It's a special audience, learners, you know.

4:39 PM
Yes, I've heard that a bazillion times.
We're lowering the standard to look caring.

I am sure they(we) are trying to do their best.

There are certain side-effects, like slaughtering the site's quality, searchability, and usefulness as a whole, as brutally as possible.
@V.V. That's the problem. Some of them are, some of them aren't.
So we don't get good questions.
We get bad questions, and bad questions that could've been phrased way better.
@V.V. tell me, do you think all the 5000 askers of "is this grammatically correct titles" are incapable of coming up with a better title?

MAR, you know the language well, but people have different levels.
Did you see the question about "probably "?

@V.V. You know, I kinda expected this.
Whenever I'm talking about soaring into the sky, some people shout "but you can't fly!"
I can't fly. Not many humans can.
But I WANT TO FLY.
@V.V. I'm not asking to enforce standards that only makes the best questions survive
I'm not looking for an elitist ELL.
I'm not asking not to let questions from people who've just begun with English on the site.
All I want, is to get people to care.

4:57 PM
I AM sorry to have disappointed you. Have you seen other beta sites? I like flying people.

@V.V. I have grown in a beta site.
My first site was chem.SE.
Now it's graduated.
You didn't disappoint me @V.V.; the apathetic meta we have, however, repeatedly does.
All we're doing is talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, and talk.
No actions.
No practical solutions.
Just "we need better answers". "We need better questions" and stuff like that.

What action should there be? The majority of people learn English without even entering such websites. (0:

The site has a lot of questions daily.It's a good level.

@CopperKettle Well, what are you doing here?
@V.V. But does it have a lot of good questions daily?

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. I was interested in the use of the the and the a, and got hooked.

5:04 PM
You can't expect it really.

@CopperKettle Much expected.
@V.V. Why not, when other SEs can?

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. And now that I've got this beautiful kettle drawn by the wonderful Snail, I'm even more hooked.

Well, I am here to learn.
Q/A is a very effective learning method.

They are probably not language sites

But just like everything else in this universe, it has some downsides.
@V.V. There is French.SE, German.SE, English.SE, Linguistics.SE, Japanese.SE (moderated by our own nice @Snail vehicle), Chinese.SE, and prolly some more I missed.

5:07 PM
A born philosopher.

And I know that at least, Japanese.SE question quality is way better than ELL's.
As I was saying, Q/A is powerful yet it has its own weaknesses.
We should focus on the strengths and minimize the damage done by the weaknesses.

That depends on culture, probably.

But what the hell are we doing in meta?
"Ooooh, this question shouldn't be open/closed. Let's burn it with superacids."
@V.V. Culture affects people, not tools.
Q/A is a tool.
Hey @BJB; welcome to LO

Oh hey, ELL is full of crap to? That lets it join the train of SO, Math, LH, Parenting, Health, Philosophy…

@bjb568 But ELL isn't even the size of SO's fingernail.
We should try to do as much as we can as long as we can.
Of course, you do know that we can't do anything when we get to the size of even 1/100 of SO.

5:14 PM
Now when I read the answer I am going to put "probably "everywhere.

@V.V. Prolly you're prolly doing a prolly good thing, prolly.
Hullo @BálintPap! Welcome to LO!

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Yes, we can actually delete crap here.

Heey, Hello good afternoon!:))

@bjb568 I'm thinking better than that. I'm trying to change the mindset here.
People here overcuddle askers.
It's been done too much, it's harmful.
@BálintPap How are you doing?

I'm fine, thank you for asking.:))
how about u?:)

5:17 PM
I'm great!
Whining as usual.

Good to hear that.:))
I mean, why?:)) What happened?:D

I don't need a reason to whine.
As usual, I'm ranting about meta.ELL.

Hmm, Honestly I have no clue about that, what does it mean, or you know.:)
I'm a really-really new user here:)).
Can u explain for me please?:)) May I'm gonna learn something new again:)).

Well, this is our meta site: English Language Learners Meta
We discuss the policies of ELL in that site.

gotcha.:)

5:23 PM
I don't find many of the discussions good, so I'm whining and criticizing.
Since the first step to finding a solution is realizing you've got a problem.

buw what do u mean, that you don't find the discussions good enough?:) Why?
what's wrong with them?:)

You can read some of the above transcript;

I did it.:)

I think the meta discussions aren't about the main problems we have.

Hmm, what we can describe as a 'main problem?':)

5:26 PM
Getting better questions, and answers.

as far as I see, it's kinda 'generally problems' in the meta site.:)
hmm, but mostly the users are asking the questions, and reply for it as well:).

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. fixing broken window helps

@BálintPap Dude, you can stop adding a smiley to the end of each message now. I imagine you grinning a lot.

:))))))

what's wrong with my smiles?:(

5:29 PM
@BálintPap When you chat more often, you see there's not much of a need for expressing facial expression after every sentence.
@bjb568 Smileyscraper?
2

Well, I'm using the Mirc very often for chat. It never was a problem.
and anyway, please don't tell me what kinda emoticons should I use, or not.

OK.

thank u:).

I use a lot of emoticons, but well, everything has its own place.
Emoticons are not an exception.
So, what else is new?

I think, it's depend on the person. I'm always writing them in chats, or whatsup, or in facebook or bla-bla. Nevermind.

5:35 PM
It does depend on the person.

yep, thanks:).

Q: How useful are "Here, say this instead" answers, when the OP isn't asking for them?

Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ.Imagine three scenarios in Q/A: Q1: How can I say that "foo bars the baz"? A1: Just say "the foo bars" instead. Q2: Is "foo bars the baz" grammatically correct? A2: Just say "the foo bars" instead. Q3: What is the difference between "foo bars the baz" and "the baz is barred"...

I hope I started something.
I hope that's not my last post about answer quality.

> Q. “How to do X fast?” A. “Fast code isn't important.”
LOL
(Basically, the answer says, "Buy better or more CPUs".)
I think there is another common pattern on ELL.

@DamkerngT. Q: Is this correct?
A: Yes.

Q. Which one is correct between "foo bars the baz" and "the baz is barred"? A. (But) nobody uses that!

user132181Let's say that I utter the following: I will leave tomorrow. Would it be ungrammatical to say the following the next day: I would leave tomorrow. I know that the following are grammatical and felicitous: (1) I was going to leave tommorow. (2) I was leaving tomorrow. Interes...

I will sometimes get up to 8 windows each with about a dozen tabs average, but 15 windows?

Well, that came up right after your meta post! @Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ.

I gotta go guys, have a nice day @Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. and @DamkerngT.:)

@bjb568 I still have got like 20 left. :D
Good night! See you around! @BálintPap

5:47 PM
@bjb568 Lemme introduce: This @Dam is a guy with 38 windows that have 2000 tabs each.
He likes giving away free RAM.

Now at about 20 windows and about 1000 tabs in total. :D

10000 bookmarks.

I'm pretty sure I have more bookmarks than that.

@DamkerngT. Your browser has really lost weight.

5:51 PM
Oh, well, bookmarks are understandable. You just bookmark everything and forget about it. But having 1k tabs is just… why?

@bjb568 I call them "unfinished business".

Get your life under control, you madman…

@Dam, @BJB, @BJB, @Dam

@BJB Dam is a robot from Thailand that has a cat named Hagu which is actually lazier than Garfield.

Oh, I should've pinned the puzzle clip like I always do. I'd better pin it...

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. I've a big and quite interesting Biology texbook in Russian. I also read some things about epigenetics.

@CopperKettle Awesome!

@CopperKettle Atleast he's not in the metaphase!

5:58 PM
Meh, metaphase is my favorite phase.
I hate anaphase, dunno why.
Wonder if @Dam's reading biology in Wikipedia now
