@orlp Like if you want to lean back in your chair you may want the keyboard scooted closer, but if you're closely looking at the screen you want it farther away

@Calvin'sHobbies Yeah, I don't see why this is a problem
you can move these around just like any other keyboard?

Sure, but there are more pieces to move/adjust (unless they lock together or something)

3:01 AM
@orlp This sounds like an absolutely horrible idea. Like one that one of those non-programmer "agile" ""feel-good"" managers come up with.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I've bookmarked that article so I can read it again later. It's really handy; thanks for showing it to me.

@Calvin'sHobbies they intentionally not lock together

@ETHproductions My pleasure! :D ES6 is so much fun

the whole point of it is that you can move each hand to where it is comfortable
rather than forcing them together in the middle

3:02 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Yeah :-) too bad it isn't supported by all browsers yet...

@ETHproductions Yeah. We should do an internet petition. Because those totally work.
[/xkcd]

@ETHproductions Hey, you know svg?

(Before you ask, no, I do not know svg. ;) )

@FlagAsSpam I know a little about drawing them

Anonymous
@mınxomaτ It's actually not horrible. I've used it in the past. It mainly just keeps you honest - there's another person constantly watching you work and performing constant code review. The only downside is that it doesn't work so well with people who tend to get in their own little world while programming.

3:04 AM
Not much though

I'm having a lot of trouble with my raw github image.

Ah, the stars are missing.

Run inspect element just to the right of the place where the stars should be.

They're huge, and invisible.

@FlagAsSpam

@FlagAsSpam rawgithub.com? Is that a thing? I use rawgit.com.
Oh, is it just an alternate name for the site?

@ETHproductions :P Yes.

Duh :P
Well, I don't see the star elements in the element list.

There's a reason github blocks the hotlinking of raw resources and it is exactly the one all those raw CDNs experience right now. Also it is bad practice to rely on third party services not approved by the host. They can fail any minute without replacement. Just my 2 cents.

@Mego Not for me.

It's just as blank.

The image itself, or loading it in the script?

Also which script are you using?

@FlagAsSpam Hmm, unrelated to your issues but could the profile of our badge trophies be curly brackets or something? (akin to a Rubin vase)

Using Tampermonkey on Chrome, this works: github.com/vihanb/PPCG-Design

@Calvin'sHobbies @Doᴡɴɢᴏᴀᴛ ^^

@Flag The vihanb one is loading the stars from base64 strings, while I believe yours is attempting to load them from URLs...

@Mego I'm using TamperMonkey on Safari.

@mınxomaτ that's not the reason
the reason is that they have github pages for that

3:11 AM
@ETHproductions Yes, that was me attempting to fix it.

Absolutely no idea then.

I can't load those base64 strings.

Oh, it's gone now.

@TanMath Did you vote to reopen this?

@Mego Is it appropriate to ask?

Anonymous
@FlagAsSpam Sure, but he doesn't have to answer.

3:29 AM
@Mego Fair enough.
Well, no, because that implies that he did.
So you still get an answer.

Anonymous
@FlagAsSpam Not necessarily. Besides, I'm fairly certain I know the answer already. An edit by him, shortly followed by a reopen vote.

Why does it matter?

I still think it isn't a dupe. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anonymous
To whomever voted to reopen that challenge: removing the incorrect statement about PHP not having STDERR doesn't make it any less of a dupe.

@Dennis (so do I)

3:31 AM
@Dennis Same.
@Mego ...dude, I posted that reopen vote because I don't think it's a dupe. o-o Unrelated.

--- IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ---

OK, let's look at all the ways I could output something. File? Clipboard? StdOut? All those changes are trivial. By that logic, all of them would warrant a whole new challenge.

You are now entering manual breath mode.

@Ampora @<tab>

@mınxomaτ I'm not saying there should be an STDOUT/STDERR/file/whatever variant of every challenge, but for the most basic print this challenge, it makes sense for me. Shortest way to save HW in the clipboards sounds actually pretty interesting.

3:34 AM
@orlp Don't blink.

Anonymous
@FlagAsSpam Blink and you're dead.

@Mego Well, fuck.
3
@Dennis Once again, same.

@Dennis ClipPut("Hello World"). This will be equally trivial in most automation languages not just AutoIt.

Anonymous
map(lambda x:post_to_main('Output "Hello, World!" to '+x),['the clipboard','a laser printer','a file','a network address','your right arm','a punchcard'])

@mınxomaτ It doesn't matter if a task is trivial in some languages. Solving it in languages where it isn't trivial is what can make it fun.
@Justin Needed a disapproval face?

Anonymous
3:38 AM
Actually because of @whiteboxes's recent presence in the chatroom, disapproval face is now @<tab><tab><home><del>

For me it's just "Alt Alt [c]opy [d]isapproval C-v"

The only output I would consider substantially enough for a new challenge would be something like TTS.

{windows key + space space} z

@Mego How is "ՊՓԼՃՐՊՃՈԲՍԼ" supposed to mean "whiteboxes"?

3:40 AM
@Justin In some browsers, that's all his name is.

It's entirely sans serif for me

@Mego Firefox on windows 8 is fine. It's either windows 10 (likely) or Chrome (even more likely)

Probably Chrome

Firefox does a lot of stuff that Chrome doesn't do

@Mego Not default. It runs fine on Chrome in Win10 (I tested that on three different fresh installs).

But Chrome also does a lot of stuff that Firefox doesn't do - I like having everything tied to my google account

3:43 AM
@Justin much nicer in dark

@Mego I did.

Win7 Chrome.

any problem with that?
I agree with @ETHproductions ... that is why.

DO YOU HATE HUMANITY?

@Mego Try fooling around with the rendering options: chrome://flags/

@Mego My encoding is "Western". Does that make me a cowboy?

@Cyoce Would you prefer Comic Sans?

@Cyoce default

@Zgarb To times new roman? Yes. To anything else? no

@Cyoce Mego is the only one who needs to read it on his computer, not the rest of humanity

@mınxomaτ Messing with rendering options != default settings

3:46 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies it does not matter
It will permeate the space around his house
they will come for him

@Mego It works with default settings. That's the standard. Means there is something wrong with your rendering. There's a chance you can fix that by altering the flags, but it doesn't have to.

@Cyoce Mego lives at the South Pole I believe

As long as whiteboxes is the only one with an insane Unicode username, I'll be fine without it rendering properly. If everybody starts changing their usernames to unrenderable Unicode characters, I'll nope out, because that means PPCG has turned into Tumblr, where everyone wants to be a special snowflake.

@Mego i know.

Anonymous
I specifically tried setting all the rendering settings back to default and relaunching Chrome. No dice.

3:49 AM
I just set the default font to Garamond! Now if sites don't set a font, it will be like reading Harry Potter.

@Justin To have that, change to font to Parry Hotter ;-)

Anonymous
Apparently it was DirectWrite that was making the font rendering borked

Anonymous
I turned it off and now it works

Anonymous
Except everything is ugly

@Mego Then there's a bug in your GPU's driver. (Or whatever renders Direct2D on your machine).

3:50 AM
@mınxomaτ The Harry Potter books were written in Garamond. I don't have a "Parry Hotter" font.

The only real font is Computer Modern

@mınxomaτ ಠ_ಠ

@Justin It was a Windows XP font. For the oldschool Movie Maker :D

@FlagAsSpam you did?

@FlagAsSpam You can only reopen vote once
even after the question has been closed again

@FlagAsSpam same for me...

@TanMath Look at the revision history
It was reclosed

@Doorknob that explains it...

@Doorknob Oh. How about that. :P

@Justin i know.

3:56 AM
I have 112 answers with a score of 1007. I honestly did not think it was reasonably possible to meet the score requirement of a gold tag-badge before the answer requirement. Then again, I hadn't ever been close before.

He's an old member of the site

@Justin I think I was a little over 100 answers when I reached 1k score as well

The senior pun maker.

@TanMath He's gnibbler

3:57 AM
and yet he is a moderator here?

Yes

He's the only remaining original protem mod
errr, wait, that's a lie

i know @dmckee was here too...

I have 89 code golf answers and only 304 score. o-o

@Doorknob who else?

3:58 AM
@TanMath dmckee is no longer a moderator here

Chris?

i know...

Chris Jester-Young was previously a Stack Exchange employee, but is now a moderator again

Oh, he was an original mod too?

yes

3:58 AM
Ha! My memory serves me well

so, martin, doorknob, dennis are all new pro tem mods?
who else is there as mods?

First there were the original three (Chris, dmckee, gnibbler); then I got my diamond; then Martin; then Dennis and Alex at the same time.

@Doorknob oh yeah! I forgot alex...
how were the mods appointed?

@quintopia I see I have a new contestant for the short form of my old username
I get called Quin all the time on sites where I go by that alias

4:03 AM
i see most of you guys became moderators when I came back to codegolf.SE yet there was no news or celebration.

I had no idea who Alex was until that post.

Really? He was super active all over main, meta, and chat long before he got appointed.

But I was super inactive all over main, meta, and chat in that period of time

haha

@Doorknob Wait CJY isn't working at SE anymore? What happened?

@Mego He's not an employee anymore. He has been reinstated here as a mod, though.

@Doorknob Interesting. He's always fun to talk to.

He should update his LinkedIn profile, then, since it still has him listed as a SE dev

@Mego He probably golfed all the backend code until he got busted.

@mınxomaτ it all makes sense now
the universe is trying to golf itself (Gravity)
and a black hole is the ultimate golf

Anonymous
4:28 AM
@orlp So dark energy is Java?

A black hole is Dennis

@Justin well, at least it's unambiguous here

@AlexA. A superdense Dennis. Constantly producing even terser esolangs.

I'm super dense.

@AlexA. that's fancy wording, coming from a fat person :D

4:30 AM
Are you calling me fat? :(

@AlexA. You use Julia. The ... Pluto of the Golf universe.

Anonymous
@mınxomaτ More like the Starlord

Julia is Chris Pratt?

The what now?

Anonymous
@mınxomaτ exactly

@AlexA. fat = more mass = more gravity = more golf

wet

@orlp Yeah, but if he's dense, he doesn't have to be fat.

I could be ripped
But I'm not

What does "tool assisted" mean in this case?
Like the player is jamming to Tool while Portaling?

Anonymous
@AlexA. Frame-by-frame inputs and savestates, usually

I don't know what either of those are

@AlexA. it means people have made an 'input track' that gets played back frame accurate to the game
they programmed a tool that provides perfectly accurate keyboard/mouse inputs on the exact frames they want
it's basically what would potentially be possible if you had a player that is optimal and makes no mistakes and has infinite precision/reaction time
it even goes further than that, because you have exact inputs you can make games fully deterministic

@JAtkin The hell? Your avatar just appeared and disappeared at the same time o.o

4:34 AM
and do RNG manipulation by waiting, for example, 5 frames longer before throwing that pokeball
@mınxomaτ that's just called a monitor refresh

@orlp ...

@AlexA. imagine you're playing pokemon

Anonymous
@orlp Is that on PC?

you have paused the game, and saved the game state
you throw your pokeball, but it didn't capture
so you go back to your save, advance 1 frame (wait like 1/60s), and then throw
etc, etc
@Mego yes

Anonymous
@orlp Weird, why isn't it on TASVideos?

4:36 AM
TASing can sometimes be save states but good emulators have rewind which is more precise

@orlp Ohhhhhhh okay. I understand now. Thanks for the explanation.

@Mego dno
@Mego it's very very new
uploaded jan 24
takes very long to get something on TASvideos IIRC

usually renders are put on youtube last

@AlexA. a different way of seeing it
you can see a playthrough of a game as a very long string of each button pressed on every frame of the game
making a tool assisted playthrough is golfing that string to its minimal length

A good video to watch about TASes:

What did they do this year at tas block I missed it

Though AGDQ 2015 TASBot was the best, with Pokemon Plays Twitch

this is the portal tas with explanation:

@AlexA. Awesome Games Done Quick is a charity speedrunning marathon hosted every year in January. In 2015 they raised over $1 million for the prevent cancer foundation
Don't know what they raised in 16

Anonymous
$1.2m

not bad tied with last year about

I'm a bit salty about AGDQ though
very international audience, but money is used to raise awareness of cancer in the US
and the organizers have increasingly become PC police =/

the Mario block definitely made this year
@orlp donate in SGDQ?
I do see your point though

@quartata I explicitly mentioned AGDQ for that reason :)

Anonymous
4:54 AM
@orlp Considering that it's hosted in the US by a US nonprofit, it's not terribly surprising that they donate to a US charity

Anonymous
Is there a reputable international cancer prevention charity org?

Anonymous
@orlp There's a reason for that - lots of kids watch the streams. It's a lot safer to be overly PC.

@orlp PC police? Is that like Norton Antivirus?

@Mego safer for whom?

sgdq is doctors without boarders right

4:56 AM
@quartata Médecins Sans Frontières
but yes
although they don't board anything

D'accord.
@orlp lol

Anonymous
@orlp The organizers. The last thing they want is a bunch of complaints against them for cursing or other inappropriate discussions/behavior on stream.

@Mego eh
who cares
no one is forcing you to watch it

they do care the last thing a charity wants is salty parents boycotting them

@quartata now that's just ridiculous
