@RikerW No
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Superscript minus, then superscript 1
Thanks
I'm working on a TI-BASIC char map
@Rainbolt ಠ_ಠ
You've never have known I said that if the community didn't star it.
Blame them
But the community is right
20:06
@Rainbolt How did you know that I rarely read the transcript?
I assume everyone is like me until told otherwise
Fair
I guess that's technically stereotyping. I assume everyone acts like a Rainbolt.
Racist
Yeah--not all of us are cubist!
:P
20:12
Oh I just got that
yeah, bad pun, best to move along
purging pun from memory... done.
I just tried to look up the difference between racism and stereotyping and could not understand the explanations I found at all
This one says "Racism is illegal; stereotyping is not punishable by law though it has severe consequences.

They hijacked my clipboard

simple.wikipedia.com
@Rainbolt Yep! That means you don't use IE.
That's really not cool
I could have posted links to porn in here and been suspended
I had the pleasure of introducing a college English professor to Simple English Wikipedia once.
@NathanMerrill I finished all 11 test files and the final result (geometric mean of all compression ratios) is 5.608. Brotli (Level 11) is 4.347. LZMA (Level 9) is 4.240.
Or maybe praised. I dunno how you guys would react
@Rainbolt If you have a sane browser, you can disable clipboard hijacking.
20:16
I use Chrome. Is that a sane browser?

Q: The Farmer, Goat, Fox, and Cabbage need to cross a river

theideasmithA farmer wants to cross a river and take with him a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage. There is a boat that can fit the farmer plus either the wolf, the goat, or the cabbage. If the wolf and the goat are alone on one shore, the wolf will eat the goat. If the goat and the cabbage are alone on the shore,...

But you can still probably do it.
hey guys!
20:16
Hi Sin/CosMath
(You guys I made a Math joke. Haha!)
Remember to vote for my challenge for Rookie of the Year!
I did! \o/
Tho really the voting system is flawed
Thank you!
I appreciate it!
all you complainers about the voting system
20:18
People will up-comment senior member's stuff and will practically ignore the other stuff. And people can up-comment multiple things
@NathanMerrill Only for the elections!
You think Rookie of the Year will be won by a senior member?
The multiple upvotes is a good thing
Multiple upvotes are good...
@Rainbolt obviously!
Ninjago'd
20:20
:P
Dennis might win it!
And for the other categories, I'd expect senior members to just be better at PPCG than the others. They've been here longer.
which rookie joined the earliest?
@Rainbolt On other stuff.
@NathanMerrill Probably me, but I'm not on the list.
@Rainbolt True, but it's impossible to rule out whether or not its that, or merely bias.
What kind of voting system are you imagining that would eliminate bias towards the author of the content? Hiding the author?
20:22
^
Are we doing ^ because we stopped doing stars as "I agree"?
Pretty much
Even if the author isn't listed, you can trivially figure out the author.
@Rainbolt I'm not imagining a new one. I'm just saying the old one is flawed.
Yeah, it's almost like Jack Nicholson doesn't get Oscar nominations because he's in a lot of movies ... oh wait.
20:24
who thought I was suggesting a new one? o_o
what does starring an "^" even mean? Are you approving the "^", or approving the message that's being "^"ed?
I don't think author bias is a flaw. This is a popularity contest, and some authors are more popular than others.
@NathanMerrill You find it funny that the author is using ^
@NathanMerrill Starring a ^ means "I find his agreement interesting for the transcript."
20:25
@Rainbolt Since when was it a popularity contest? No one tells me these things.
Probably because I'm in that corner too often
All voting is literally a popularity contest since the most popular choice wins.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Nobody tells you these things. It's something you figure out in high school.
FML
High school sux
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Life is a popularity contest.

When they vote for class president, you eventually realize that the guy who wins is not the most capable of handling political affairs for your class. He's just the quarterback.

can't say a goddamn opinion without being corrected
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ bye?
20:27
> When they vote for class president, you eventually realize that the guy who wins is not the most capable of handling political affairs for your class country. He's just the quarterback most popular.
FTFY
@TimmyD no, that's why we don't have a pure democratic system
(in the US)
@MartinBüttner Okay, but how will I test languages which I don't have, like Mathematica and Matlab
Yeah, yeah, representative republic. Still a popularity contest.
Random act of annoyingness:
@Adnan you don't!
20:29
Uh, no.
@RikerW blah
@Adnan I tend to upvote answers I find interesting, regardless if I've tested it or not
@Adnan You can ask folks who do have those to verify the solutions for you, or you could try a Matlab solution in Octave (though that isn't always reliable).
the caution is against serial upvoting
@TanMath Yeah, what?
20:29
@RikerW Lmao. lurk skurwurkler
@RikerW blah
@Rainbolt I know.
@TanMath Stop please.
> Please ping me for absolutely no reason. No seriously, do it.
Oh, yeah that.
@NathanMerrill I always upvote answers which look good. I just almost never test the answers, because I'm very lazy
20:30
I dislike the blah part though.
why not?
Maybe random reddit links?
but they aren't links!
plus, I don't use reddit!
As you can see, I am procrastinating about my report on how computers help humanity.
@TanMath That doesn't make a difference.
You can still waste time there.
@RikerW I know!
20:31
@AlexA. Hmmm, okay
@RikerW Did you choose that topic?
Short answer: They don't. Computers are a hindrance to human development and we should all live in the woods.
Wasting time...
@Rainbolt Either that or sex ed.
@AlexA. agreed!
20:32
@AlexA. My report in short.
@RikerW I'd have snapped up sex ed so fast
Got rejected.
@Rainbolt lol
@Rainbolt hahaha
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
20:32
Trust me, not with our teacher.
@AlexA. But I think that will be very annoying at some point, constantly asking if it's valid or not
Do you have to speak on your report, or just turn it in?
Both.
@Adnan Yes, I agree, I'm just not sure how else to do it. I think there is a way to use Mathematica for free, I just can't recall what it is.
@RikerW ask @Geobits, our resident evil AI...
20:33
About 80% have to present it.
Btw, I was kidding about computers being a hindrance to humanity...
@TanMath So @ಠ_ಠ is @Geobits's sock?
New permalink system!
@Cyoce ????
20:34
^
You had the option of presenting sex ed or the importance of computers to your peers and you chose the option that only the geeks in your class might care about.
for my interpreter
@Rainbolt Yes.
Cause trust me, the teacher is baaaaddddd.
@RikerW no! @ಠ_ಠ is @AlexA.'s sock!
The code is converted to a hex dump, and every 3 digits of base16 is converted to 2 digits of base64
20:34
@TanMath No
@TanMath Nah, that is @FaxMachine.
@AlexA. I think that was some kind of trial version, but I'm not sure
Who else gives ಠ_ಠ?
@RikerW I know who @FaxMachine is!
20:35
Yeah, @AlexA.
> It's pronounced gif, not gif.
4
lol
rofl
@AlexA. why did you make @FaxMachine?
Lol the profile description made me laugh
> Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeee scrEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE weeeeoooooooooh
^
@AlexA. you ninja'd me...
20:41
Heh, I changed my GitHub profile picture and got a follower like 30 minutes later.
so that's how you look like!
Alex != Bird
It's a fairly old picture at this point, 2012-13, but basically yeah.
Mind = Blown
I've since morphed into a bird.
20:43
^^
@AlexA. come on! you messed up my carrot!
Also, @MartinBüttner, your answer doesn't seem to work for the test case [[1 2 3 4 5]]
> Büttnerm
oh, you fixed it
Why doesn't it ping him
damn, that used to work
20:44
hahaha
@MartinBüttner this pinged?
Oh wait
@Adnan is it the comma?
Someone should make a golfing language that compiles to the JVM.
20:45
@MartinBüttner weird...
^ does that ping?
@PhiNotPi Does that not already exist?
@TanMath I have no idea
@AlexA. No idea.
I think it would...
@Adnan, the comma shouldn't matter.
20:46
Oh, hah. I should've checked chat first. Sorry Martin.
@AlexA. usually it does...try it on me!
@TanMath, comma
it works...you win!
20:47
^ hope that makes you feel better...
When can I make tags?
Jelly needs to mess with the depth for @Adnan's challenge. I think Pyth could actually win.
@TanMath When you're 45
2
so, like 100,000 rep?
@ThomasKwa I am actually really excited what the Jelly answer would be
how were the previous tags made then???
20:49
By 45-year-olds
I haven't been able to find a JVM golfing language.
In a dungeon of pain
I am talking about how much rep is needed...
Forged in the dark, golfy depths
if you didn't figure that out already...
20:50
Look at the privileges page
> One language to rule them all...
I can already create new tags?
Yeah I think it's 1k
You can, but you shouldn't
At least not without consulting meta first
20:52
@AlexA. no! it is 150 rep!
Oh, okay
Maybe it's 1k on graduated sites then, idk.
but at 1k I can edit without needing approval...
Maybe that's what I'm thinking of
i edited...
I feel a new genre of questions can be made that try to make you happy...
What did you edit?
20:58
@AlexA. check the active questions!
lol
Please do not abuse the tag system like that.
no, I am serious, there might be a new topic of code golf questions like that...
I think that jokes should be kept inside the walls of The Nineteenth Byte, and everything else should be done serious
21:00
@Adnan Does the order of the bounced arrays matter?
@Dennis Nope
Like there could be a challenge that checks if alex is present, print "alex is right", else print "alex is wrong"
you know what?
let's have a challenge like that...
@TanMath If you'd like to propose a new tag, I suggest you take it to meta.
@zyabin101 will it have DONT/WHILE loops?
@AlexA. how do you that?
21:01
Post a meta question asking for feedback on whether the community wants such a tag.
ok...
as was done for the OEIS tag which was deemed unnecessary
Make sure you read and understand this post, first

Q: Tagging: are we doing it wrong?

Martin BüttnerI wanted to post this for a while... First off, I think that we're not tagging enough. Currently, we have an average of 2.1 tags per question. I've checked some (thematically) comparable sites, and Stack Overflow, Code Review and Programmers all have between 2.6 and 3 tags on average. Tags are a...

Well, anyway, just for your feedback, here is the challenge I propose:
The input is a list of 1 and 0s. 1 means Alex is here. 0 means Alex is not here. If Alex is here, print "Alex is right". Else, print "Alex is wrong". If there are more than 4 consecutive times in the list that Alex is here (5 or more consecutive 1's in the input), print "Alex is so right!", and the next 0, print "Alex is so wrong!".
So you have to print something for each item in the list.
@Adnan Your bouncing array challenge is surprisingly difficult. Admittedly, I'm attempting in PowerShell, which is ... poor ... at array manipulation, but still -- excellent challenge.
21:10
@AlexA. much to my chagrin :(
so?
(I hate when this place is slow!)
@NathanMerrill ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Personally, I think the tag covers such cases sufficiently.
I know. the arguments were solid
I'm glad you brought it up though. It's always good to have those kinds of discussions.
@TimmyD Yeah, I also have no idea on how I should do this
But I would love to see a PowerShell answer :p
21:15
my idea is bad?
21:26
I swear no matter how hard I try I can't get past the Trinidad Scorpion pepper on the Scoville Google Doodle

Also, if you actually create and on main, Doorknob may slap you with a large trout.
Jul 6 '15 at 23:10, by Doorknob
Also if you make a thing I'll whack everyone involved with a large trout
Don't even mess with tags.
<><
2
@Doorknob slap
@TanMath It seems rather trivial. Here's an extremely off-the-cuff PowerShell answer that I haven't validated, but should work ... param($a)$a|%{if($_){if(++$d-gt4){"Alex is so right!"}else{"Alex is right"}else{if($d-ge5){"Alex is so wrong!";$d=0}else{"Alex is wrong";$d=0}}}
21:29
@TimmyD so? easy is nice? isn't it?
Simple is nice. Trivial is not.
6
how can I make it simple?
trivial to simple please?
Like Adnan's bouncing array challenge. It's simple, but it's certainly not trivial.
It isn't simple!
Anyone know how to have inline markdown with a space starting it?
21:30
"Easy to understand" vs "easy to code"
` code` doesn't work
@NathanMerrill That's probably a better way to put it.
@Cyoce Try three backticks maybe? ``` hmm```
nope
\ hmm
How can I make the challenge better then?
@NathanMerrill "Easy to code" is usually fine. "Only one obvious reasonable way to code," though... that's boring.
21:31
^
new challenge gone...
@Doorknob well, they aren't off topic, but I'd certainly think the site would be better with fewer "easy to code" challenges
I would have called it "Backbiting Alex"
BTW,

Everyone's salty about the voting system for some reason
I think it works OK.

wow that was fast
@quartata Every lang is a golfing lang if you try hard enough (except Java)
You haven't seen Unicorn then.
@quartata All comments are intended to be the submissions to vote on, so I nuked that one ASAP.
It's not nearly as nasty as Unary/Lenguage but the multi-byte chars certainly makes it pretty nasty.
