Wow, today I noticed I have the same number of questions as answers on this site.

2:34 PM
Wow. Check out the "Male Captain Hat"vs the "Female 1st Officer Hat." Not okay, @AmericanAir. Not okay. https://t.co/Iv94FUe0ik
Sexism is alive and well I see

@casey @DanHulme @Lnafziger --Thanks for setting me straight on Aviation.Meta. I think I just needed a head check...it happens on occassion.
Hopefully something good comes out of it though, I mean, the system probably could use some amount of refinement... In the mean time I think I need to just chill
@falstro I was a little confused at first, but is it sexist because the Captains hat is offered to men (with only a comment that it could be an FO) and the First Officer hat is offered to women (with only a comment that it could be a Captain)?

@JayCarr That would be it, yes.
or alternatively, the women's hat is offered as first officer, while the men's hat is offered as captain (with the notes that it's also available as captain and fo respectively)

to be non sexist they should've listed "captain's hat (m/f)" and "1st officer hat (m/f)"

well no, it's a men's hat and a women's hat

Mkay, that's what I was figuring, it just did't jump out at me at first.

captains and f/os use the same hat

4:33 PM
they have different codes

So, maybe: "Women's hat. Captain/FO" and then "Men's hat. Captain/FO"

@ratchetfreak yes different for men and women, not for captain/fo

same with the sliders

oh wait, you're right different codes for both
@ratchetfreak yeah, I noticed.

women get first officer by default with option for captain and for males it's the reverse again
captain hat
male: style #700-
female: style #700-

1st officer hat
male: style #700-
female: style #700-

4:44 PM
@falstro captain and FO hats are the same, only the "Hat brass" is different. Women (at least at my airline) had the option to choose from a second style of hat that was also the same for captain/fo aside from the brass.
at least from the supplier we used, but hats were not required at my airline so almost noone wore them
@JayCarr if you really want to see rep reforms you'll need to argue it on the main meta. For the reasons laid out in the accepted answer to your meta post, big changes like that need to be made network wide (SE won't do one-off per-site changes for major things like rep/badges) and to work network wide it needs to work for SO. in any case, meta.se is the place to propose that feature-request.

@JayCarr For the longest time on SO, my highest-voted answer was a two-paragraph fluff answer to a kind-of opinion-based question that happened to get lots of views, and my lowest-voted answer was an incredibly detailed description of some undocumented Android features that took me two days to write and I still refer to every six months or so.

@casey Aw...the thought of going to Meta.SE makes my head hurt... It didn't go well last time I went. Perhaps I need to figure out what would be required to get myself takne serious there (and, likely, what would be required for me to come up with an idea worth serious consideration.)

my highest voted answers are often my least technical, bad examples of my postings :)

@DanHulme Yeah....to be fair, my highest voted questions are probably the ones that required the least technical understanding to even ask. The really interesting ones, that deal with the mechanics of flight (and are usually answered by Peter Kämpf), rarely get more than 7 or 8 votes... That's one thing about SE I wish could be changed somehow but I have no clue what could possibly be done to remedy it.

@JayCarr for that particular feature request to gain traction you'll need to present evidence that the current system can be outdone by the one you propose. SEDE would be a big resource to get the kind of data that could back up an argument to change question rep.

4:52 PM
@casey Hmmm....not a bad thought. I might need to start digging around in there to see if I can pull up some hard data.

that's the problem with popularity and questions that get bikeshedded

and you will need to propose a better system, not just state the current one is "broken"

Awww, but whining is so easy!
I did propose a solution in my post though, I will admit, it was fairly off the cuff.

@JayCarr so easy to DV! :) just look at what meta.se is capable of:

Q: A New Code License: The MIT, this time with Attribution Required

samthebrandUpdate: January 15, 2016 Thank you for your candidness, patience and feedback. We're going to delay the implementation for now - we'll be back soon to open some more discussions. Important context for those arriving from reddit and slashdot links: The status quo is not "public domain"; a...

thats down into the realm of "vehemently disagree"

Bejebus, that's crazy.

4:56 PM
@casey they learned from the backlash though

Q: Code licensing proposal — Point of order!

200_successThere have been two rounds of discussion about code licensing: The MIT License – Clarity on Using Code on Stack Overflow and Stack Exchange A New Code License: The MIT, this time with Attribution Required In my opinion (and with the benefit of hindsight), both rounds have been suboptimal ways...

This is my big flop on Meta.SE

Q: Flagging inaccurate answers, another possible solution

Jay CarrIntro- Yes, this has been discussed before, but I have a different solution and some updated reasoning. Please, for the love, read the post before down voting it... (but then you can down vote it all you want, I know it's not a popular idea :) tl;dr: I personally think users should be able to ...

@ratchetfreak yea, I just wanted a heavily downvoted post and that one came to mind immediately

I am really not sure how to approach those people, last time just kinda freaked me out.

@JayCarr you could go hang out in "the tavern" and get a feel for that

@casey Why do I suddenly feel like I'm playing D&D... Do I need to roll up a character before I enter?

4:59 PM

 Tavern on the Meta

MY GOD, IT'S FULL OF STARS AND BACKLOG! General friendly chit-...
@JayCarr you need to play 5th ed, rolling new characters is easy!
no more feats/skill choices to get bogged down in...

I'm currently playing campaign in 5E actually, and I even have a little app on my iPad to help me make my characters... Come to think of it, my memory just hasn't updated itself. In 5e it's never taken me more than 15 minutes to put one together.
And yeah, I agree, I like how the new skills work. Much easier to pull new players in, if you ask me, and much less of a hassle in game :)

I'm DMing a 5e game now and its a much more pleasant experience than pathfinder

ha, you nerds with your RPGs :-p

Mmm, sounds like fun. I'm currently just playing (I DM'd 3.5, trying to get my skills back together to do it again.) Are you guys using a ready made campaign?
@DanHulme What?!!?!? Nerd!?!?! RPGs?!?!?! ...yeah, yeah, pretty much ;)
Come join us, it's more fun over here ;)

2 hours later…
7:35 PM
Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.
(The undead cannot die, fools!)

@voretaq7 You still hanging around this place?

@JayCarr well, hanging around again. Work is returning to a semblance of sanity.

@voretaq7 Ah, well, you showed up just in time to miss my triumphal return (accompanied by a fair amount of bitching and moaning, you'da loved it.)

7:50 PM
@voretaq7 heh, my job is apparently better than yours, I got enough cycles to open up the chat yesterday already! ;)
@voretaq7 had one of those iso-something audits again did'ya?

@JayCarr What is 5e?

@falstro nah, auditing isn't until July. We're cutting a software release, and I kinda had to completely rebuild the QA environment so we can test it.
(testing officially started an hour ago)
@JayCarr I've been bitching and moaning since late December (I wanna fly, and both Work and Weather are NOT cooperating dammit!)
I have this sinking feeling the weather is going to get better around say February 15-20th (right after we start the annual).

heh
I hate it how the sun just punches a hole in the cloud cover all day and just as you consider taking off early from work to head out to the airfield the low clouds just appear out of nowhere.

8:07 PM
@falstro yeah, 'tis the season of "If I can't see stars at night I probably ain't flying"
(also "It's fucking cold!")

@Ethan Fifth Edition rule set for Dungeons and Dragons. If you're not playing, go check it out in your local game store ;).
@voretaq7 That's a familiar feeling. I keep telling my boss I need a raise to support my flying habit, and he sympathizes (he has the same addiction) but alas.... We're still broke :(
I hope you get in the air soon though. That plane of yours isn't going to fly itself...hopefully.

@JayCarr forget the tie-downs and it will ;)

@falstro I saw a vide of a 747 trying to do that once. To be fair it was being dismantled and had no engines...but it certainly was trying to rotate in that stiff wind.

@falstro heh yeah, I actually stopped by last night just to check ropes. I'm going to have to bring the battery tender out there at some point too, it's been over 30 days and it's winter so the battery is sure to be "unhappy" :-/

@voretaq7 how much would you have to pay extra for a spot in a hangar rather than a tie-down?

8:22 PM
@voretaq7 You're in the NYC area, right? What's the weather been like, other than, you know, "absolutely terrible."

@falstro Hangars are going in the 500+/mo range, tiedowns are $150-180 depending on where on the field you want to tie down.
@JayCarr it's actually not "bad" weather-wise. All of December was good right up until I went on vacation with plans to fly :P
now it's just cold and cloudy/snowy (and when it's not I've got this pesky day job)

@voretaq7 Meh, that day job sounds like it's really holding you back. You probably should drop that habit.

@JayCarr I keep scanning the classifieds for a career in my chosen profession, but nobody has any openings for independently wealthy gentlemen :(
I WILL WEAR A TOP HAT!
(I can't do a monocle because I'm blind as a fucking bat, but I am willing to rock those ridiculous half-glasses that perch on your nose with no additional support during the work day!)

@voretaq7 Yeah, it's a difficult field to get into, especially with that disability stopping you from wearing the monocle... Tell me though, how do you look in an ascot? You can make up for it that way sometimes.
I'll keep an eye out for an opening, in the mean time, you might try your luck with this:

@voretaq7 monocle + contacts?

8:36 PM
(though, to be fair, the "girl" part of that is negotiable as needs may be...)

@falstro I refuse to wear contacts for a number of reasons
(among them, I work with chemicals a lot and if something splashes in your eye you have to get that plastic lens out in order to wash it out)
@JayCarr I am not above marrying a rich old biddy and having someone scare her into a heart attack after we're legally wed...

@voretaq7 I somehow hear a plan coalescing in my mind... Oh, no, wait, that's the plot to Tommy Boy.

2 hours later…
10:31 PM
So do any of you guys play fallout 4 or any game on the next gen consoles.

@Ethan I played Fallout 4 for a little bit. I was borrowing the console and the game though, so it only lasted so long.

@JayCarr Its so much fun. Though I suck at it. Do you play call of duty?
