I'll start another one on one of my old questions in a week or so to see if there is a hat for that, like there is a badge for it.

@Mast My Secret Sanat Wishlist includes a CR-branded Rubber Duck :)

@Zak careful what you wish for ;-)

A: Android app hates hats

Kasra RahjerdiI'm really sorry we don't have anything on Android :( I promise the Android app does love fun, its parents just didn't have any time to help it dress up. Ironically, I was too busy wearing too many hats myself to be able to work on this. Brian implemented it on iOS very quickly, so my initial ho...

should we tell him to get back to work then? :)

@Zak I didn't put anything on my wishlist. I simply have no idea what I'd want either.

I'll send a pen and hope for a Jon Skeet book when I do it.
I think those are a lot more than $15, though?
Maybe I'll send $90 worth of pens.

@Hosch250 don't get your mom mad at you over this! ;-)

I'll do it when I'm independent. I didn't sign up this year for that very reason.

7:18 PM
wow, +165 on MSE. I might actually cap today. Just not on CR.

What do you think about going for a Masters?
My parents want me to take one online, but I think I'd rather get a job.

I'm strongly biased against school-for-school, don't ask me.

Zak
@Hosch250 Get a job. If you want to study for a masters, do it in your spare time (better yet, wait a few years and persuade your employer to pay for it).

'tis the season to give bounties: codereview.stackexchange.com/?tab=featured

@Hosch250 If you're going for a masters, get a real one. Over here the online ones aren't worth as much.

7:23 PM
@Mast You can get a lot of online masters over here.
From reputable universities, too.

I got mine in a box of Froot Loops

Trouble is, one way or another, I'd have to take the in-state one to get residency.

Nothing wrong with going for a Bachelor though, if you want to go that route.

Aaaannd... two new answers for the tag. Might as well use my latest work for something.

It doesn't sound as good as a master perhaps, but it's worth a lot IMO.
Got one myself.

7:25 PM
@Mast I'm finishing my Bachelor's in the spring of 2017.

Less theory more applied.
Ah, ok.

The biggest trouble with a CS masters is I'm taking an ITM bachelors, and don't have the basic classes needed for a CS masters.
How am I to understand the advanced algorithms when I've never taken Algo 101 and 102?
Not saying I can't study on my own, of course.
TFL.

Should I make this a bug report?
Off-by-one errors are easy to make, I know, but this is ludicrous.

lol that's... wtf?

Q: The ugly Christmas tree, Haskell style

joranvarInspired by a few inverse tree ascii art F# questions, I wanted to give it a shot in Haskell. As seen in the linked questions, the resulting program reads an Int from stdin (\$0 \leq n \leq 5\$), and displays a tree of dimensions 100 * 63, consisting of \$n\$ Y-formed "trunks-and-branches" of wh...

@Mast oh that may be connected to the secret hats
@CaptainObvious try-with-resources... please

@CaptainObvious someone's getting a seekrit-hat for that

@Vogel612 Shouldn't the secret hats be counted as well?

I'm just saying the secret hats are one-off...
and Ethan and 200 are counted correctly
neither has Hairboat's revenge

What should we do with answers that we consider bad? Are we allowed to ask the community to downvote them take a look at them and consider if they are worth spending a downvote on?

Anybody think this answer is worthy of Copernicus?
@SimonForsberg What do you want me to downvote on?
@SimonForsberg At least, that's how I'm interpreting your question.

@SimonForsberg what else would you do?
Worst case is a delete, the rest gets a comment and downvote
usually I don't call upon the chat-effect, unless I'm unsure.

Q: Hat counter has lost track

MastI just noticed the following on the Code Review Winterbash leaderboard: Now, if my math is correct, TopinFrassi has 5 hats and rolfl has 4 hats. Why doesn't the leaderboard agree with me here, is Hairboat's Revenge not counted while shown? My fellow Code Reviewers blame caching, but we alway...

@Mat'sMug That's what, 2 years ago?

7:41 PM
yeah

@Barry I know about two answers that haven't received anywhere near enough down-votes:
0
A: is it okay to create a method of this one statement?

CaridorcI agree with @πάντα ῥεῖ , definitely factor it out. For even nicer usage, I guess that the format string is most often the same, so you could make it a default argument: public static String getTodaysDateInFormat(String format="ssmmHHddMMMuu"){ return (LocalDateTime.now()).format(DateTimeForm...

A: ASCII table in Brainfuck

TimtechI think this would be a more efficient way of doing it (at least for the printable ASCII characters): ++++[->++++++++<] Use cell 0 for loop and cell 1 for ASCII codes ++++[->>++++++++<<]>>> Use cell 2 for the space +++>++> ...

See my comments on both of them.

@Barry Napalm'd.

That Brainfuck one should never have gotten 15 upvotes. I guess that what happens when people vote just for the sake of voting instead of whether or not the answer actually provides any value.

^ finally somebody said it

Zak
There's a guy in the VBA tag who has some good ideas, and a lot of bad ones. I often find myself reading his reviews thinking "That's a good idea, that's a terrible idea, that's just idiotic, actually that one's not bad" etc.
I have no idea how to respond to it.

7:43 PM
comment, comment, comment

Zak
Well yeah, but that only goes so far.

also one terrible idea in an answer is a no-up and two are usually a downvote

Zak
What I really want to do is review his review. But if that's not against the rules, it's certainly bad form.

@Zak Yup, we have users like that.

don't underestimate the damage dealt there

7:45 PM
@Zak post a counter-answer
deconstruct his bad ideas and reinforce the correct ones

Zak
Are you allowed to do that? Post answers solely about deconstructing other answers?

@SimonForsberg Wow, how does that BF answer have so many upvotes??

while reviewing OP's code

@Zak mentioning good points is also a kind of review

@Barry because BF

7:46 PM
I mean, C++ template metaprogramming is only marginally more understandable, you don't see those non-answers getting +15...

@SimonForsberg (swiftly removes upvote, hopefully that will go unnoticed)

@Barry actually...

Zak
@SimonForsberg I tend to avoid voting in tags I don't understand, unless somebody pointed it out in chat as deserving of more recognition.

A: Printing lyrics of 99 Bottles of Beer

Jerry CoffinThis seems like a place that template meta programming would be useful (after all, we don't want to waste precious run-time in a program that's likely to execute this often). #include <iostream> template<int N> struct song { inline static void sing() { std::cout << N << " bottles of...

^^ TMP 99 bottles of beer

Nice find.

7:49 PM
@Vogel612 I give up

Of-course, once you go templates, 99 Bottles of Beer is way too easy.

@rolfl you need this one:

@Mast meh, I've got a totally overvoted answer there, too

Q: n number of x on the y

MastEveryone knows "99 bottles of beer on the wall". Mat's Mug made a comment about mugs on the wall in The 2nd Monitor and I realized I never wrote a "beer on the wall" program. But that seemed way too easy, so I made it a "n number of x on the y" instead. It also seemed like a good excuse to use t...

@Mat'sMug Monkeyception?

totally

7:50 PM
@Barry Because there are very few people who actually know Brainfuck around here. So when people read a BF answer they think "Oh, this guy seems to know what he's talking about!" and they give him an upvote.

@Mat'sMug hmm... should be related to the monkey king.

Zak
@Mat'sMug How is this not starred yet!
(Not my fault, I've been out for hours)

@SimonForsberg Yea, basically Simon and 200 are our only BF experts.

@Zak Always try to verify that yourself. Read the reviews with critical eyes.

@Zak because y'all wasted your stars earlier!

7:52 PM
@Vogel612 Yes! Comment! Finally somebody said it ;)

yeah, ok, right, it's C#.... but that post made me understand BF :)

@Mat'sMug You write BF now? And here I thought your esolang library was restricted to LOLCODE.

Zak
@SimonForsberg I didn't mean I blindly upvote (usually). But if I have no idea how the language works and the way the answer is written *looks* like a decent answer, then I'll happily take the word of whoever pimped it that it is deserving of an upvote.

@Mat'sMug did you actually earn that hat??

7:54 PM
@Mast that's nothing. I did whitespace, too!
@Vogel612 nope, copied the pic url from the seekrit-hats meta

who did? let me stalk their profile! :D

Erin. The poster of the meta.

@Zak Looks can be deceiving :)

Zak
@SimonForsberg Sure, but I think it has a net positive expected outcome, on average.

7:58 PM
Hopefully.

@Mat'sMug You're giving me awfully bad ideas.

IKR

@CaptainObvious @janos there was a missing c++ tag there...
@Mast processor-based fizz-buzz?

Post C code with an obvious bug in it. Don't tag it as . Tag it as . Let the confusion commence.
7

Of-course it should do something valid in whitespace then.
But that would make for awful questions.

8:06 PM
the tag is actually , to avoid confusion with " " meta-tags

@Mat'sMug Blame

the whitespace I've seen over on PPCG gets into ST notation...

@Vogel612 Hosch did that here as well.

I think I'd post it with <kbd>SPACE</kbd> and <kbd>TAB</kbd> tags...

@Mat'sMug I'd close that. It's like posting pictures of your code instead of the code.

8:08 PM
crap, you're right

And make it actually work in Brainfuck

no no no! make it C# and leverage the "see sharp" pun!

@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ What software is that anyway, looks almost like some Adobe thing.

@holroy it is actually a follow-up and I had answered also the question before. Having to do with the file-system did not let me easily test it

@Caridorc I know it's a followup that is why I actually caught the fact that it was broken, as I suggested using functions with parameters and returns. So when they are missing, it was easy for me to see that it is in fact broken.

8:51 PM
@holroy yes, functions with no parameters nor returns are (with few exceptions) glorified go-to-s

Do you think it still should VTC'ed? Or is it good enough with my answer commenting upon it?

@holroy if the OP tested it and it worked for him (even if he was just lucky) then it is on-topic

@Caridorc I see your point... And that is kind of the issue. Because if he starts a fresh he most likely not know why it doesn't work anymore... And in addition he can vote however he'd like with the current code, and nothing changes a bit... So even though it does work, kind of, it is seriously broken also...
