Q: Code Review's Secret Santa 2015

TopinFrassiTo celebrate our first graduated Christmas (and because we feel like it), some regulars in The 2nd Monitor thought it would be a good idea to make a Secret Santa between members of Code Review! The rules are quite simple : You will send an email to secret-santa@lambdaexpression.io to register...

Thanks

Zak
Alright, I've got 4 upvotes left today. Who wants 'em?

@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ -172 is pretty far from the cap ;-)

monking!

@Mat'sMug I have a quick question.

I might have a quick answer.

4:10 PM
Should I be using #if DEBUG like so:
#If DEBUG Then
' Some debug thing
#End If

wait, VBA?

VB.NET
Or should I be doing:
#If DEBUG Then
Dim InDebug As Boolean = True
#Else
Dim InDebug As Boolean = False
#End If
Then use InDebug everywhere?

totally depends what you're doing when InDebug is true

Well I'm injecting a keypress wait when InDebug is true.

that one thing?

4:13 PM
#If DEBUG Then
                    SW.Stop()
                    DebugLog("MSxxx: Press any key to continue." & Environment.NewLine, EventType.None, Guid, False)
                    Console.ReadKey()
                    Console.CursorLeft = 0
                    SW.Start()
#End If

I'd leave it inlined

With the #If directive?

actually, extract a method out of that block, and turn it into..

I mean, there's a lot of those, and I only ask because I ran into a compiler error this morning because I switched from Release to Debug mode.

#If DEBUG Then
    PressAnyKeyToContinue()
#End If
although, ...I never needed to use any #If directives. I just use Debug.Print to output to the output window - these calls aren't compiled into a release build.

Am I the only one who genuinely enjoyed the original?
Sure, it made no logical sense. But it was fun.

> Welcome to Earth. smack

Zak
Alien invasion films never make logical sense.
Any realistic alien invasion goes "Entire planet blasted by advanced technology from half a solar system away. Invasion over."

it depends on whether they want to destroy the planet or harvest resources

Zak
If they want physical resources, Gamma rays. If they want biological resources, probably some kind of engineered virus followed by autonomous sniper drones.
Or maybe just the autonomous sniper drones.
Actually, scrap that, probably Nanobots.

if they want to engineer a virus, they'll at least need to send a scout team to collect samples so they know how to engineer it

Zak

If this gets to +3, I get a hat: codereview.stackexchange.com/a/113943/34073

Zak
One of the few alien invasion films I really liked was "Edge of tomorrow". If you look past the premise that time-travelling aliens haven't conquered the entire planet after a whole year of trying, the rest of it was surprisingly internally consistent.

of course, they could park in orbit, wipe out our satellite network, and target anything launching from the surface

Be sure to vote on the accepted answer too, because it is only +3 itself.
