@SirPython --> not a good place to discuss something like this, I see the Meta Post, let's keep it there
@Malachi Please read this here. — SirPython 14 mins ago
I see that the question title was updated and I removed my comment.
I will change my auto comment script as well, because I think you have a point

@Malachi Of course. I had no intent of continuing the conversation there. I recently posted that meta, and I went around looking for those comments so the people who use them can give feedback.

cool. it might be better to ping them here, OPs are like programmers, they get scared easily.

@Malachi in what way was the original title, "Node.js action controller code" bad?

@SimonAndréForsberg I am guessing that I commented after the first edit

@SimonAndréForsberg Read the second edit.
The OP changed their title.

4:06 PM
@Malachi Hah, and when you would come into our office, (exaggerated) there might be hardcore playing

@Malachi your comment was posted: Malachi Jul 14 at 13:33, i.e. 10 minutes after the question was posted. The question was then edited Jul 14 at 15:37
the second title was worse than the first one IMO. Then @Jamal came and improved the title significantly, to make it better than both the first and the second.

Greetings

we want titles that help us end up on search results. that is why I commented

Wanna see some code crap?

4:07 PM
monking @IsmaelMiguel
hold on @IsmaelMiguel

Alright, im holding on

@SimonAndréForsberg I agree that both the first and second titles are not the best. and that is the point that I was making with the comment. unfortunately I took the easy way out and used an auto comment. so it may not have been completely appropriate, the reason for the meta question
I like @Jamal's title best, and that is why I got rid of the comment.
> action controller code
that is generic ▲▲▲ and won't show well on search results, people aren't going to search for that.

this should show better on search results ▲▲▲

As long as it still covers the question. Just make sure SEO won't become the main target. Having good questions with good answers is.

4:13 PM
tags already help with the SEO of the question, that is why they aren't needed in the Title, and/or question content.
@Mast agreed. @Jamal is good at editing titles and such, he rarely(if ever) makes mistakes editing

@RubberDuck as I said, you don't always know what the solution to the problem is... But you can at least present your evidence as to why you believe it's broken.
If your code launches missiles, maybe ask on SO? "This code launches missiles, but it should not." is a much better problem description than "This code does not work."

@nhgrif Many things are a better description than 'This code does not work'. And still it's often posted on SO like that.

@nhgrif That reminds me of WarGames (1983) which I just saw on Saturday
2

@Malachi but it did say what the code was doing.

@Phrancis and the non-sequitur begins... lol

4:27 PM
Sorry, won't go down that rabbit hole, just an interesting remark :)

@SimonAndréForsberg Yes it did. where would you like this conversation to go?
if I said "takes input" on a console application, that tells me what the code does too

@Malachi your original comment said that it did not.
> Welcome to Code Review! As we all want to make our code more efficient or improve it in one way or another, try to write a title that summarizes what your code does, not what you want to get out of a review.
that's just the point I'm trying to make. I find the comment a bit misleading in that particular case.

maybe there is grey area on titles, where everyone has a different idea on where the line is that determines whether it is black or grey
@SimonAndréForsberg Auto Comment, bad Auto Comment. lazy, bad, user?

lol. No worries.
I know you just mean well

:)
I agree it was a bad auto comment, and I usually don't use them. I like being lazy though, and occasionally do use them. I should have just written one, but I hate looking up the Meta posts, that is the main reason I use them, I hate typing in the links. I am lazy
Maybe I try to make a JavaScript for comment links....
not now though, I have to work, at least a little bit today
@SimonAndréForsberg just read your answer, and now going BTW.Work

4:36 PM
Can't blame you, I'm also lazy.

@rolfl two, actually
Although I can't really see why. Why is not down-voting enough?

Huh, interesting "participation" users on meta: meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/users?tab=participation

Well, you have a ton of syntax errors, so you clearly haven't even tried running the code. Stack Overflow is not a code review service. If you have issues with the code, then I'd be happy to help you, but until then, this isn't the place for this. — Morgan Thrapp 13 secs ago

I think you drew a deck out of a spinning card

@SimonAndréForsberg badges.
One of my 'beefs' with some users is the fanatic badge - people who get fanatic badges on multiple sites using automated tools to create activity.
Scan this list of accounts, and pick a reputation 101 account, and inspect the badges: stackexchange.com/users/6489/dori?tab=accounts

5:38 PM
@skiwi you worked on some 3D things for Cardshifter
@rolfl so they just upvote random stuff to get the badges?

In this case, I don't think so, user seems to be pretty focused on meta....
meta does not count towards flair, and the fanatic folk who are fanatic on meta are probablyt just hopefuil that they will count those on flair at some point.

@EthanBierlein If someone said that to me, they would be designing their own website.

Wow.

So, I was looking at this (this link won't work for many of you, likely): stackoverflow.com/tools/posts/migrated/stats
I noticed that Code Review has more migrations from SO than TeX and GIS combined

@durron597 Does that mean - we are more relevant than TeX and GIS combined?

60 migrations in last 90 days, 16% reject, TeX is 30 migrations with 23% reject and GIS is 29 migrations with 6% reject.

Relatively successful, all things considered.

6:22 PM
Well, it's interesting because TeX is in the migration paths and you are not.
Oddly, Programmers is 21 migrations with zero rejections in the last 90 days. Thanks @Duga and @SimonAndréForsberg !
6

The CR mods have spent a lot of time in discussions with the SO mods, and there's a few plans and strategies involved.

We try, but sometimes things happen too fast.

@durron597 wow. Has that ever happened before? Not a single rejection!?
@rolfl As a quite new CR mod, I am not fully aware of those plans and strategies.

@SimonAndréForsberg Bluefeet is the basic strategy, though she moved on. Her legacy has stuck mostly with Martijn.
Migrations can only happen through flags, and the bulk of the flags are simply rejected.

6:25 PM
I really like how Martijn is doing things. He's also helping with the "voting to close because CR"-comments.

Most of the SO mods have trained themselves to simply ignore or deny migration requests.

Do you think @Duga is missing the rejected migrations, or do you think that Duga's catching them, but the userbase is not? Or do you think that the community of chat users disagree about what's appropriate to migrate and what isn't?

the few that do handle them, are pretty well versed in what it takes.

@durron597 hmmm... CR -> SO, 35% rejected. Not good.

don't downvote this. It belongs in codereview.stackexchange.com — gene 9 secs ago

6:27 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg Not unexpected either, CR questions are seldom formatted in a way that survives on SO, even if the underlying question is basically on topic.

@SimonAndréForsberg "don't migrate crap"

Please include the code in the question itself if you post it on Code Review — Simon André Forsberg 5 secs ago

@Simon - some history, and the differences....... context matters:

@gene This question would need a lot of editing and improvement before it would be appropriate for Code Review. Also, when a migration happens, downvotes are removed. Finally, if you do post it on Code Review, make sure to delete the question here as cross posting is frowned upondurron597 1 min ago

@durron597 considering the many comments that @Duga posts, I think there are some that the userbase doesn't catch. But there might also be some that are flagged directly, without a comment.

6:29 PM
SO was/is getting lots of flags to "please migrate to CR". This burden is not as significant on sites with a migration path.
The volume, and processing-time required for those flags is significant.

@SimonAndréForsberg Well, this is why I came to chat; the comments come with the migrated question. I'm wondering if you've noticed that the incoming posts don't comments, or that the mods that handle the flags are wrong about your standards
I'm just fascinated by the whole process.
It's really helped us to have a Stack Overflow specific guide Do you have one in your meta?
Nearly all of @Duga's flagged comments get responded to with our guide.

@durron597 I haven't noticed much about the migrations we get. I did notice that we got one question here today, but there was no SO mod that asked us about it AFAIK, although the question (codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/97460/…) was well-received here.

More history required to understand that ^^^^

@durron597 We have this:

Q: Be careful when recommending Code Review to askers

chillworldCode Review is becoming well-known on Stack Overflow. The folks over on Code Review are happy about that. The only problem is that there are a lot of questions redirected to CR which don't belong there. So I want to ask that the users who direct askers to CR (or request migration of questions...

The other thing I noticed was that, since you are double TeX migrations, do you want to be on the SO migration path now that you've graduated are graduating?

6:33 PM
@durron597 There's a meta about that.
Hmmm, not this one:

Q: What questions are suitable for migration to Code Review, and how does the process work?

rolflConsider this situation: There is this question on another site which I think would be a good candidate for migration to Code Review. What should I consider before flagging the question, or actually migrating it?

@durron597 I think it is worth a try. If it doesn't work, then we will go back to how we are doing it today.

in The Whiteboard, May 6 at 2:08, by World Engineer
We fought long and hard to get off it

@durron597 Another "problem" for us is that, unlike for Programmers, the SO-comments are actually quite accurate often.

I have some strong opinions on migration to/from CR, and it's "complicated".

@SimonAndréForsberg That question is rackin-up votes like crazy.
@rolfl That ^^

I need more rep on SO...
in other news, I think this matches quite well our stance about that kind of "is there anything wrong..." questions, right?
@AlexandreSantos Code Review is, just like Stack Overflow, not for debugging code. Code that is posted on Code Review should be tested before it is posted there, hence "Do you see anything wrong with this code?" is not a good question to ask. — Simon André Forsberg 1 min ago

@durron597 those are still on SO though, how would I find those?

I can do it ;-)
I have enough rep on each site.

That chat thing seems to have worked really well... on a related note @Dante, posting code you do not "own or maintain" to Code Review is off-topic. It's possible your migration statistics are really bad RIGHT NOW if someone's been deleting really old questions that were migrated pre-Duga.
The last 5 rejects certainly suggests that's happening.

@SimonAndréForsberg Go and boost your meta flag stats now ;-) meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/5772/…

@Duga @Phrancis See that is a question that would really benefit from a guide specifically targeted to that sort of incorrect migration.

@durron597 Migration is a PITA, and no mods really like it.

7:08 PM
@rolfl Oops, I already got it. And it looks like community deletion isn't possible because rejected migrations automatically lock the post.

My opinion is tha tthe whole thing should be ripped out, and burned. If people ask on the wrong site, jsut close the damn thing, and get a re-ask.

@rolfl I thought your opinion was complicated?

Yeah, it gets complicated when you try to make the current system actually work "OK".

@rolfl seems to have automatically been marked as helpful when I closed the question there

@SimonAndréForsberg No, marked helpful when Jamal deleted.
I only flagged after the rejection,.
A deletion will "helpful" all pending flags on a post, no matter what they are.

7:10 PM
@durron597 that is @Phrancis way of approving a @Duga comment though
@rolfl I was marked as the moderator that handled the flags though

probably with the comment deletes, when you deleted them (if it was you). I don't think a post close will handle any of the pending comment flags.
check the timeline.
mod -> timeline
(I miss the timeline),

@durron597 We came up with this some time ago, it comes in handy as a "thumb rule" guide that fits nicely into a comment and addresses the primary points for being on-topic, I use it all the time

A: "3 questions" in SO comments pointing to CR

PhrancisTaking a stab at it: This question could be suitable for Code Review, as long as (a) your code works as intended, (b) your code is real code, rather than example code, and (c) your code is included in the body of the question. If you wish for a peer review to improve all aspects of your code,...

@rolfl okay, there were some flags that Jamal was marked as the handler of.

@SimonAndréForsberg That question must be edited quite a bit before it becomes on topic anywhere, including SO. The guide should reflect that, to a more targeted audience that the basic help center
everyone thinks they know what they're going to see, they don't click <site>/help
but they will read "What goes on CodeReview.SE? A guide for Stack Overflow" It's feels more personal to them.

@durron597 I'd be happy to edit my response to point to that guide, do you have a link to it? I'm all for improving cross-site communication

7:17 PM
How can I retract a suggested edit?

@Phrancis What I was saying is that y'all should write one TARGETED for SO. Programmers has one, you don't.

Somehow one of my edits conflicts with one of rolfls.
I still saw the old version when editing and the system didn't tell me it changed in the mean time.

@durron597 I have considered making one. We could really use it I think. Maybe it is possible to have one guide that could work for both good and bad suggestions.

@Mast rejected already

Thank you.
Now I'm wondering if a bug is at play or if I'm going senile.

@durron597 @Simon I'm down for anything that could prove better. So far it seems the one I have used has worked "OK" but if there is a better one you come up with, by any means let me know

Double welcome, not sure if it's a copy-pasta error or a repeat in your template

Hmm. It's strange sitting next to your boss and being interviewed by another company...

@nhgrif How does such a thing even happen?
@CaptainObvious Nice question.

We have a big client and apparently they want to vet everyone on the project.

@nhgrif Sounds a bit... excessive?

Unless he's in detaching, or whatever it's called in English.

I sort of agree.

@Malachi ^^ Above VBA question just posted

@Phrancis On the contrary....

@Phrancis the Script that I am running has an automatic welcome, but the comment also had a welcome --> Welcome to $SITENAME$!
@Phrancis I can't edit that either... I have fixed it in my auto commenter though

@SirPython That's fantastic.

I wonder how distorted the images would get if you were to loop it a few times, using the output image as the input image.

@SirPython Eventually they'd turn into something every idiot can draw.

Today has been relatively unproductive thanks to meetings.

@nhgrif My auto-translater converts it into Toyota Production System.
What's TPS?
Temporary Protected Status?
