Q: Quicksort for Objective-C

sunnyThis is quite plain vanilla, but I'm hoping for Objective-C specific feedback. Also I'd be interested in what folks think about sorting in Objective-C vs. doing all sorting in C or C++ (and which?) even in an app. - (NSMutableArray *) quickSort: (NSMutableArray *)toSort{ int intLength = toSo...

RELOAD!
There are 1353 unanswered questions (94.6937% answered)

@Quill I hope no-one makes an actual recommendation to post it here

This code hasn't been tested. Unless the user's intent is to sort the object in the array based on their memory address, this code doesn't work as intended. — nhgrif 1 min ago
@SimonAndréForsberg ^
(I can't fathom why anyone would want to do what the code posted actually does.)
if (toSort[0] <= toSort[1]) { // comparing memory addresses
    return toSort;
}

@nhgrif I think I will let the community handle this one.
How difficult would it be to have it sort by another condition?

It depends on what's in the array.

12:04 AM
I can't tell exactly what the code uses right now to sort
what if it's an NSInteger?

@SimonAndréForsberg In Java terms, this code is doing the equivalent of myString == fooBar
You can't put NSInteger in an NSArray.
NSArray/NSMutableArray only hold objects. Or rather, object references.

is <= operator overloaded, so that you can use the actual values?

Nope.
No operator overloading in Objective-C.
He can only be comparing memory addresses.
No possible way that code does anything else.
Don't close it yet.

I accidentally said something in the review queue "looks okay", but I really think it should be deleted. Is there a way I can take that "looks okay" back?

@SirPython No, but you can go to the question after you saw it in the review queue and take the action you want.

12:12 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg Okay. I'm just concerned that by voting "looks okay", it won't appear back in the queue and no one else will see it.

once it gets enough of those, it will be removed from the queue
I think it needs 3x "Looks okay". Or one by a moderator.

    NSMutableString *a = [@"a" mutableCopy];
    NSMutableString *b = [@"b" mutableCopy];
    NSMutableString *c = [@"c" mutableCopy];
    NSMutableString *d = [@"d" mutableCopy];
    NSMutableString *e = [@"e" mutableCopy];

    NSMutableArray *unsorted = [@[a,e,d,c,b] mutableCopy];
    NSLog(@"%@", unsorted);
    NSMutableArray *firstSort = [unsorted quickSort:unsorted];
    NSLog(@"%@", firstSort);
    [a setString:@"z"];
    NSMutableArray *secondSort = [unsorted quickSort:unsorted];
    NSLog(@"%@", secondSort);
That example should definitely break the code in the question.

A: Hangman in Swift

nhgrifThere's a ton of code here. For the purposes of this review, I'll be focusing on the HangmanBrain class (I've ignored everything else for this answer). This class seems to be the core, so it's a good place to start. private struct Words { static let Easy: [String] = ["fireplace","apple"...

@nhgrif That syntax highlighting makes me want to puke

What, is it too 'murica for you?

No, it's the issue of really bright on really dark.
I like something more along the lines of Visual Studio's theme, simply because it's more of a light grey, on slightly less bright colors.
Like this:
It's just easier on my eyes.

This screenshot may make it more obvious what's going on in that question

I don't us VS dark theme, there isn't enough contrast.

12:38 AM
@Hosch250 That's why I use it.

I like XCode's dark theme, but I don't know if there is enough contrast there either.

There's too much contrast in the case of XCode.

It's Xcode.

I can hardly read VS's dark theme.

And that theme is called midnight.

12:39 AM
I use the white theme.
@nhgrif I can't download the theme for VS, can I?

Also, unless either of you are on a MacBook, it's unlikely the colors look the same to you.
Uhm, @Hosch250... if I were still at my old job, I'd upload it to you.
Because I totally recreated it for Visual Studio.
But it's on their computers..

Cool.

I can tell you the color codes.

That would be nice.

@durron597 I just posted this comment ^^ and I realized the point of having a SO-specific meta question.

Thanks.

I think a user might just be more confused about what is and what is not on-topic for CR from that comment.

12:45 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg OP certainly needs a review, though.
Maybe he'll post a good CR question too.

And additionally, my comment only mentions one thing that is off-topic, it doesn't nearly provide a full guide to what is and what is not on-topic.

@SimonAndréForsberg Are you going to post the whole help center?

Community handled it.
For what it's worth, the argument the method takes is pointless. But for the code to work, it needs to take a closure argument that takes two id and returns an NSComparisonResult.
- (void)quickSortWithComparator:(NSComparisonResult ^(id first, id second))comparator {
    // compare the objects in self using comparator block
}

@nhgrif I love it when Community does that.

Kinda how I felt trying to learn JavaScript at first; Java code in JavaScript syntax. Thank you Google Sheets for messing with my head!

@JohnSnow "Java code in JavaScript syntax" try using classes before es6 :^)

Well, I tend to do "classes" in the shape of a new file
Works fine for node
And Google Sheet
Then you realize Google Sheets are synchronous.

(classes don't work in nodejs without a flag / es5)

I'm not using classes in the code!

11:54 AM
I was more pasting that in here for opinions on the tagging of the question...

Clearly the best practices for the languages are different
The tags are important for the answers

@nhgrif even if it's only that line which makes it objective-c, it's still objective-c

It's more of a no functions as parameters, no functions in functions and everything is written as if it's synchronous and sequential.

The author has to decide if they want to write objective-c or c

yes, I might create cruft in my code (i.e, unused interfaces), that doesn't mean it's not the language I wrote it in

11:55 AM
@jacwah Expand on this...
What's clear about the difference in best practices between C and C-written-in-Objective-C-files?

@nhgrif I don't know Objective-C, but is that really the best practice?
Why would you constrain yourself like that?

Is what really best-practice?
Constrain yourself like what?

C-written-in-Objective-C-files

That's what this question is.
There's nothing Objective-C about it.
    #import <objc/objc.h>
    #import <objc/Object.h>

    @implementation TestObj

    ...

    @end
That's the only Objective-C about the question

Yes, it's written in objective-c and should be reviewed as such

11:58 AM
I can write code that looks very similar to C# in javascript

wow

if OP tags it as obj-c, you should ask him if he meant C

This isn't code that looks very similar to C.

if he didnt', it should be reviewed as a obj-c question.

This is C.
It's just in an Objective-C file.

11:58 AM
It can't be compiled by a C compiler

OK, let me rephrase
if I write code in C++

It doesn't adhere to the standard

and it compiles under a pure C compiler
That means I can't get it reviewed as C++ code?

@DanPantry It means you're not writing idiomatic C++

@jacwah It is compiled by a C-compiler. Objective-C "compilers" do little more than turn special Objective-C syntax into C-code. And then compile it with a C-compiler.

Q: Cast static array to open array of different element type

Ulrich GerhardtI have a utility routine taking an open array of TControls and want to pass it a static array of TLabels. How can I do that most elegantly? Please see the following example: type TForm1 = class(TForm) Panel1: TPanel; Memo1: TMemo; private FLabels: array[0..9] of TLabel; public...

Objective-C and C share a special relationship that none of the languages you guys are using for your analogies share.

but if you review it as C just because it 'looks like' C++ and is compilable by a C compiler, it might be idiomatic in C.
