This is a math question which, I surmise, is most likely to be answered by a physicist. As such I think it should stay here.

Similarly, "how do I stabilize a laser" is most likely to be answered by a physicist and I think other users should recognize this when their VTC finger itches.

Don't feel that you have to be bound by other people's opinions unless they can show you a solid consensus in a meta post.

I wonder if the math community internally distinguishes between robotic symbol manipulators and people who actually generate knowledge. Certainly in undergrad they weren't distinguished, and it was a real pain to have the former sitting in on a physics class belittling it all as poorly defined.
