potential-octo-hipster? Sounds great to me.

@SimonAndréForsberg How about... no ;)

You think @Duga is a good name, considering all the things she does?

@SimonAndréForsberg I've gotten used to it, and it's not bad at all

11:01 AM
@skiwi How about... why not?

@SimonAndréForsberg Duga's name is an insider joke, that's different.

@SimonAndréForsberg Because it's a bit too hipster

@Mast but what if you didn't know about that joke?

@SimonAndréForsberg Probably not so much.

But it is still a name. And it's unique.
It's memorable.

11:02 AM
And a good name.

Says absolutely nothing about all the things @Duga does, but who cares?

@SimonAndréForsberg It does say something about the quality of what Duga does though.
It's the right tool for the job.

that's because you know the meaning of the name

So it's even better than a 'generated' name
But for outsiders, they won't know

If we would follow @skiwi's naming thoughts, @Duga would be named something like "SEBotWebhookPosterCommentScanner".
My point is, a good name doesn't have to say anything about what the thing actually does. It just needs to be memorable.

11:05 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg Hey, you taking a stab at my glorious GithubSEWebHookService?

"Skype"? "Linux"? Memorable, yes. Descriptive? Not really.
5

@skiwi the name was workable. Then the repo got renamed, one day in the future I plan on renaming the actual URL mapping as well.

@SimonAndréForsberg About time
Duga-1 and Duga-2 (Russian: Дуга - "duga" means "arc") were Soviet over-the-horizon radar (OTH) systems. They were developed for the Soviet ABM early-warning network. Both of these radar systems were aimed east and were fairly high power. They were predecessors of the Duga-3 or "Steel Yard" OTH system, which operated from 1976 to 1989. Duga-1 was the first experimental system. It was built outside Mykolaiv in the Ukraine, and successfully detected rocket launches from Baikonur Cosmodrome, about 2,500 kilometers away. The second prototype, Duga-2, was built on the same site. Duga-2 is able to track...

I found something... Argentum

Oh, nice reference :o

You saying that... I shouldn't be using it because it's being used a lot alrady?

I'm not saying anything. Just handing you the facts, the decisions are up to you.

There's nothing wrong with two projects having the same name. Ultimately, that's inevitable.

Indeed.

#Github says: Great repository names are short and memorable. Need inspiration? How about spawncamping-octo-computing-machine.

11:17 AM
Maybe I can pick from Pengar or Kassa then

@rolfl Not entirely memorable with that length, but nice try.

Wtf Swedish? Pengar translates to money, funds, jack and lolly?

@rolfl tell that to @skiwi :)
@skiwi jack and lolly?

#CodeReview Moderator Elections starting on Monday - Full graduation 1 step closer: http://meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/q/5504/31503?stw=2
May as well tweet it....

May as well retweet it....

11:24 AM
Also, typically e-mails are sent to people during elections in which they are eligible to vote.....

May as well... wait, I don't have a Twitter account.
2

apparently that e-mail system has been buggy..... so, it's worth reminding people to check....

@rolfl I didn't get one during the latest SO election.
So, Monday we can start shoving people up the election podium?

@Mast Monday people can start nominating themselves (and others).
that will be open for 7 days...
then there may, or may not be a period of preliminaries... reducing the field to 10 candidates.
then there will be some days of actual voting.,
So, new moderators in about 2 weeks, or so.

@rolfl It would be great if we had enough nominations for a preliminaries.

11:31 AM
so if there are more than 10 candidates, there will be preliminaries?

Looking for the rules.....

@SimonAndréForsberg That's what Google Translate tells me

@skiwi Don't trust Google.

I wonder if we are able to accomplish that. I hope we are, but I am not sure.

Rules in right-margin here: crypto.stackexchange.com/election/1
> In the election phase, up to 10 candidates advance to final community voting. Any community member with 150 reputation may vote in the election.

11:33 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg I got a couple of nominees in mind, currently trying to figure out which is the best idea.

29
A: Graduation update: it's election season!

Simon André ForsbergThank you 200_success, rolfl, Jamal Thank you for moderating us! And thanks to all the moderators that we had before you. I bet we'll see at least some of you as moderators again soon!

There's no point in making a lot of nominations just to get a lot of nominations going.
2

Hey, the pro term mods get no thanks?

@skiwi What do you think that 29 upvotes are?

@Mast Upvotes

11:34 AM
Our agreeal with Simons statement.
I've tried thanking the moderators in chat a couple of times, but they won't have any of that.

You might want to visit codereview.stackexchange.com - although parseable, your code is very poorly styled. Also there is nothing in your question which specifically relates to ZF2 and the reference to MVC is irrelevant. And if you think the code above has anything to do with the log entry you've added here then there's something very strange going on somewhere. — symcbean 9 secs ago

There's no point in making a lot of nominations just to get a lot of nominations going.
That's a statement that's debatable....
I know there are more than 10 people that I personally believe would make great moderators
I would hate for them to not run for the position just because they believe someone else could be better.

@rolfl meh. whether they want to is the different question

@Vogel612 That.

Q: Organising structurally very similar classes

Kai A little background - these are classes I've written on top of an Entity Framework model that represents tables on Sql Server with the following names: Dictionary.Databases, Dictionary.Schemas, Dictionary.Tables, Dictionary.Columns SysData.Databases, SysData.Schemas, SysData.Tables, ...

11:38 AM
@symcbean No matter how poorly styled code is, it does need to be working, and not be "example code", before it is posted at Code Review. Would be helpful if you would mention that next time. As is, this question would be closed on Code Review. — Simon André Forsberg 16 secs ago

luckily the system has a way out:

That's true.... ^^^ but, even if half the people I think could be mods, don't want to be, then there's still more than 10.

anybody may nominate someone, but the candidate must give their seal of approval

As said, I can think of a couple of good people who would be fine moderators. However, I'm fairly sure a couple of them won't take the job.
I also know of a couple of people who I deem incapable who will try to run anyway.
This election is going to be much more interesting than the one at SO recently.

That will happen.....
which often encourages the more "reluctant" people to nominate too.

A: Preventing source code from being used for commercial purposes

ShreevatsaRPlease don't try to prevent commercial use; it's against the spirit of open-source.1 It's worth thinking about what exactly your motivations for wanting to prevent commercial use are. There are "three levels" of open-source licenses, which you could use depending on what your intentions are (Cre...

Any thoughts on the GPL license?
"But if your motivation is to avoid feeling "ripped-off" by a commercial company "stealing" your code, the GPL is what you should use." <- That's exactly how I feel like

the infection thing is a problem....

@skiwi I hate libraries that use it, but if what you want to make is truly meant to be open source only, then it is fine. But as @Vogel612 says, indeed there is a infection factor.

basically you could discourage users from using your stuff, because they'd have to GPL it too

I need to clarify that I'm considering a license for a software product, not for a library

1 min ago, by skiwi
"But if your motivation is to avoid feeling "ripped-off" by a commercial company "stealing" your code, the GPL is what you should use." <- That's exactly how I feel like
That's BS ^^^^

11:44 AM
I'm not expecting anyone to "need" to include my program (not library) in their program

Anyone heard of "linux"......
I wonder if any company uses it for "commercial purposes".... and what license it uses...?
GPL does not prevent anyone from using it... just distributing it in a closed way.

Maybe I shouldn't be making it open source, but I like the thought of it

@Vogel612 if it's not meant to be a library, then there's nothing really to GPL, right? I mean, a product and a library are "used" in different ways.

I released every library I wrote under LGPL because I thought it was one of the most permissive ones. Turns out I was wrong.
3

@Morwenn it's not like you can't relicense...

11:46 AM
@rolfl I'm "worried" about a company "stealing" my code and then starting to make profit on what I have done in my free time

And people using linux don't make a profit?

@Morwenn I can pass you an invite for opensource.stackexchange.com
Entered private beta yesterday

@Mast I'm already over there.

@skiwi Take my advice: Make it open source. I was very reluctant to make my Minesweeper algorithm open source, because it was the code I was the most proud of. Honestly, I don't regret making it open source at all. Probably best move I ever did.

@Morwenn Should've known, many of CR are

11:47 AM
@Vogel612 Probably what I will do since nobody uses them anyway. It shouldn't pose a problem.

@rolfl No. Not at all. Google uses Linux, they don't make any profit, right? :)

you can also dual-license..

No, but I guess they have been stealing all that linux GPL code.... right @skiwi ?

I got one repo under ASL 2.0 && partly CC-BY-SA
one under MIT
one without license at all..

"The Unlicense" is also a license.

11:49 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg Yea, one of the most permissive ones.

@Mast One of the least permissive ones I'd say

@SimonAndréForsberg It basically states "Here, take my code. Have fun!"

@rolfl Well, depends for what purpose Linux was made...

whoops, okay. I was wrong.
I thought of another license.

There's also the Do What The Fuck You Want To Public License.

11:51 AM
I thought of this one: choosealicense.com/no-license
Mar 13 at 19:32, by Simon André Forsberg
Jan 26 at 20:31, by Simon André Forsberg
"DO WHAT THE FUCK YOU WANT TO PUBLIC LICENSE" - who is public license and why would I want to do anything to him?
3

Say I want to make a piece of software and license the program to end-users for $5/month, then I'd hate it if another company comes in, takes my source, and starts to sell what I have made, right?

Then don't make it OSS...

that sounds like you want a commercial license.
indeed. Don't make it Open Source. I thought non-profit users would be allowed to use it for free.

@Vogel612 Can you host something on Github and have it not be OSS?

no...

11:53 AM
(As public repo)

Uhm.... maybe.....?

private repos are only supported if you pay

if you have a paid account, you can make a repo public, with any license.

I think by hosting it as open repo you lose that right..

11:54 AM
bitbucket.org allows private repos for free though

@SimonAndréForsberg My take on that still remains that whoever wants to bother compiling it from source via the repo has the right to use it for free, but I would want to offer a pre-packaged version under license

All public github repositories are always allowed to be forked. I'm not sure what consequences that can have if you use a commercial license though

What I don't want is that some other company comes in, takes the source and then starts to make profit on it

@skiwi Copyright is more complicated than you are allowing it to be,
4

You can host a non-free (as in beer and speech) repo in the public, and still be covered by whatever license you apply to it, but.... why put yourself in that position?

11:58 AM
Now it's just a simple project that I'm wanting to make for a few users and I"m not putting big on the fact that it might make money at some point
@RubberDuck Because hosting it in the public (and having the awesome @Duga features) feels better than it being on my machine

6 mins ago, by Simon André Forsberg
bitbucket.org allows private repos for free though

@skiwi @Duga webhooks probably works on private repos as well.
@Duga doesn't work with bitbucket though (yet... pull requests are always welcome)
2
However, you really need to prioritize... what's more important, the license or notifying a chat room about the commits you make?

Q: Finding the sum of all the multiples of 3 or 5 below any given number

menakaI wrote the following simple function in JavaScript that finds the sum of all the multiples of 3 or 5 below a value, given from a text-box I have used "n/2(a1+an) (sum of arithmetic sequence )" function sum_of_all_mul_3_5(){ var value=parseInt(document.getElementById("input").value); ...

If this was a project with multiple people the stakes would be different, but all alone it's hard to get the motivation going

12:03 PM
@skiwi Hey, what you need to take into account in that most people in the world don't care about you and don't want to use your code.
I'm not being harsh, it's just that projects being actually used by many are the exception.
3

> I was wondering if there is a way to shorten or otherwise improve this code.

@Morwenn True
I'm still undecided

And most projects that are actually being used by many are either open source, or developed by big companies.

I don't think I can go wrong though by making it OSS with GPL for the time being

Probably all companies that could "steal your code and make profit" are very likely to have another solution already that is much better at doing what they want to accomplish.

12:07 PM
Maybe I'll need to make the repo private if I really want to start making profit on it, but if there's multiple people contributing, etc. that's not fair, so that will be decided later

@SimonAndréForsberg Yes. I've seen it for the first time after I started watching, liked it.

12:15 PM
it was a lot of fun coming up with that

@skiwi GPL2 is an interesting choice.

@SimonAndréForsberg ughhh....... GPL....... lol

@RubberDuck At least it wasn't a license.
4

I can always change my license when I want to change it

12:19 PM
> There is a long ongoing battle between GPL zealots and BSD fanatics, about which license type is the most free of the two. In fact, both license types have unacceptable obnoxious clauses (such as reproducing a huge disclaimer that is written in all caps) that severely restrain our freedoms. The WTFPL can solve this problem.

Running Git console as if I was using Linux. Doesn't work really well...

@skiwi that's actually easier said than done with GPL. By using GPL you agree to make the code available for a certain amount of time...
But I'll get off my soapbox.

@Morwenn On what OS?

@nhgrif Windows 7.

12:21 PM
I see.

@RubberDuck Maybe I should read my own license
3
The good thing is that there's no code ;)
The bad thing is that there's no code

For those of you interested (no one...), I did finally create a couple of releases for SQLConnect.

@rolfl How so?
I think I just noticed there's also GPLv3, but Github had the GPLv2 in bold

@RubberDuck How does it differ from the Unlicense in that perspective?

12:23 PM
Idk. Never heard of the Unlicense before.

@skiwi Well, it is common to license code to "the GPL2.0 or any later version"
And with version 3 out, it is interesting.

> TODO: make a real README for github

I'll blame Github for it

@Mast You really need to do your own research on some things as well, some times.

@RubberDuck Where does it state that I'll make the code available for a certain amount of time?

12:25 PM
GPL 3 does.

@RubberDuck Yes.

@skiwi Oh. My bad. I didn't realize that clause wasn't in 2.

I feel like I need a lawyer for all these licenses

@rolfl I did. As far as I understand they're basically the same.

There's your answer, then.

12:28 PM
I should actually find more C libraries that have great utility that someone might want from an iOS application and write an Objective-C wrapper so it can be used in Objective-C/Swift applications.

@rolfl I've been wrong before.

@Mast And so has rubberduck.
2

@rolfl I've often been wrong about many things.

I think everyone has been wrong before, though I might be wrong on this.

@rolfl But if you make your own decision, you have to blame yourself. If you let someone else make your decision you can always blame them.
4

sigh... fights the urge to rant about the sad state of American society...

@skiwi I once thought I had made a mistake.... but I was wrong.
3

@rolfl Did the universe apologize to you for making you think you were wrong?
@skiwi Unborn babies.

@Mast They may be mistakes in whole....

@rolfl True, but that's a totally different matter.

Lots of starring going on this morning...

12:34 PM
@nhgrif This phenomenon is better known as a morning star.

@Mast Not to be confused with other morning... things

@nhgrif Still, you made the decision to let others make the decision.
It just became a nested decision.

Are nested decisions as bad as nested for-loops?

Not quite. It's not quite as big of a performance implication... but if too deeply nested, readability is hampered.

@skiwi No, just make sure the exception notes how deep it is.

12:40 PM
And there's still branching, so the more decisions you have, the larger the branching effect can be... but this is a very minor performance concern when compared with nested loops.

1:00 PM

No names past Vannevel in his class apparently

That's just.... daft.

I was sitting next to him when we were trying to find out where it went wrong
I saw my name in Finder, was about to yell and suddenly he scrolls down and the scrolling animation showed me briefly and then put a status bar on top of me
Makes you think you scrolled to the end but it's not entirely there

I can imagine that this process left you .... puts on glasses... behind bars

#PunOfTheDay

Greetings, Programs.

Greetings, flatulations.... ;-)

@rolfl you think your recent harassment in the mod room has anything to do with the elections?

2:29 PM
@Mat'sMug Bahhh.... there's a lot of stuff that has gone on. I pissed off some staff members, motivated others, and brought a lot of attention to the site.
On the whole, yes, it was good for the site.
the pun-a-day is also just the last part in a long process that has been ingoing for.... a long time.

It's kinda odd how these questions suddenly receive so much attention. It's not even a proper StackOverflow question! The code works and optimization is not an issue, meaning this actually belongs to CodeReview. — Dion V. 25 secs ago

Elections 2 days after I go off into the wilderness. The mods must be scared of me as a competitor
I'll be moderator in exile

You pissed off staff members?

yeah... I overdid it according to some
I think they are wrong ;-) so, we disagree.

Did you get kicked? Haha

2:32 PM
No, I did not get kicked, but, put it this way, the fun part of being a moderator became not-so-much fun for me.
The SE "process" is not very predictable, and communication is done on a crisis basis. Nothing really gets done unless there's a problem. I made Code Review a "problem", and as a result, something was done.
Someone had to pester them, and I volunteered for that....

@DionV. In its current state, it would be closed as off-topic hypothetical/example code on Code Review. CR requires real code and as much context as possible. — Mat's Mug 45 secs ago

now I need a holiday ;-)
do the fun things again

@Mat'sMug I once lost a job like that. Kept the honour to myself, but still, it became unworkable. They deserved it though...
@rolfl You'll be back for the next election :-)

@rolfl so you became the black sheep monkey and sacrificed for the Greater Good

I would not put it quite like that....

I think it's more a question for Code Reviewtmoreau 56 secs ago

Sure, I made things messy, but it was not a sacrifical thing. The bulk of my reasons for not running are that I have other commitments that are looming, I am going away for long stretches in the near future, I am overcommitted on the amount of time I spend here, etc.
It will be nice to just be a regular user again, seriously.

Our site is fantastic, but the mod duties are surprisingly demanding, especially when you go beyond the minimum levels required.
So, for the past number of months (since late march), I have been waiting and waiting for an election so that I could use that as a logical break-point to step down....

I'm never going to stop being amazed...

Well, thank you for waiting for elections to step down.

Since yesterday there's been an annoying loud sound whenever someone sends a message to me on Skype, the least I expected the sound to come from was Firefox
Appareantly it's the Outlook tab even, I was thinking of an extension/plug-in

That's part of why I hope there will be something like 5 spots. So that 1-hour-a-day mods can have a life without compromising site quality much. Besides, we have a whole lot more trusted users now than we had a year ago

2:47 PM
Interesting. I was out last week and didn't notice the election announcement.

It's pretty fresh-from-the-oven

For all of those people considering running, you should know that there is a whole "next level" community of moderators and staff behind the system. It's a real honor to be part of that, and it adds a new dimension to the exchange experience.

Q: Safely storing Azure Topic clients in concurreny dictionary

Ognyan DimitrovI am trying to optimize the usage of TopicClients in my app. Is such an implementation safe? Are there any pitfalls? public class TopiClientCache { private readonly string _defaultConnectionString; private static ConcurrentDictionary<string, TopicClient> _topicClients = new ConcurrentDi...

...and it ruins your RL?

Not running, sorry :)

2:49 PM
@Mat'sMug No, it complements things....
You need it, as a mod, to get advice, support, humour, etc.
someone to chat with.

@rolfl Did you ever get to spend time with the Lady Stackicorn?

I did, yes.
I put her on an early IBM machine ;-)

I'm not saying it's on-topic for SO, just that it would be off-topic for Code Review without more context provided. :-) — Mat's Mug 19 secs ago

Nice
But the hour-a-day minimal commitment is waaaay below anything realistic isn't it?
@QPaysTaxes +1'd both

Q: Go (board game) in Java -- version 2

David MašekFirst version: Go (board game) in Java What's new: I now use (as advised) HashMap<GoPoint, StoneColor> where GoPoint is my "coordinate" class and StoneColor is an enum. Game allows only legal moves. Player can pass (skip turn). Player can choose the size of game board. Code is more readable ...

@CaptainObvious ooh

@Mat'sMug It depends how you look at it. Here's about how it works out for me:

2nd take on a great post
@QPaysTaxes welcome to the real world, Neo
