Wasting 100+ minutes watching a stupid Phil lecture.
:(
Do escape characters work here?\nNewLine.
Apparently not.

@SimonAndréForsberg Right. "Monday" and "Morning" add nothing logically. What they do is provide redundant, human-oriented information that is, however, only 100% valid for humans in the same time zone as Greenwich. I am suggesting a UI issue with this proposal, not a logical one. — Isaac Moses 16 mins ago

you can do shift + enter

@rolfl @janos not sure how to respond to that one ^^

@SimonAndréForsberg wow, that's still going on....

yes, but I will probably stop now

8:10 PM
Yeah, but what if I want a \t tab?

@SimonAndréForsberg unless you want to enter a world of pain

Does shift-tab work?

you can copy-paste tabs

I've been itching all evening to use a quote from TBL....

Nope, just a normal tab going backwards.

8:11 PM
I haven't even seen TBL

Like I keep permanent tabs in my clipboard.
Four spaces is good enough.

you'd probably like it Simon

Like this, maybe` `.
Nope :(

Q: Ini file parser project

karimthis is my first project, that a share on git. I want you opinions / critics on it. Link : https://github.com/karimsqualli96/sini_parser

@CaptainObvious This is no longer off topic.

8:25 PM
and 2 comments flagged as obsolete :)
^^ that is how you get helpful flags

are you still in the flagging business Simon?

It has a very interesting license on GitHub...

yes, but I am not doing it for a badge anymore.
now I am just flagging things as I see them, I don't use the SEDE for it anymore.

oh there is a SEDE for it?

@SirPython it does indeed, also noticed that :)
@janos I wrote a simple query searching for comments that included "edited" (or some variation of it) and ordered by comment length, as the shortest comments are the most flaggable.

8:29 PM
DO WHAT THE FUCK YOU WANT TO PUBLIC LICENSE
                Version 2, December 2004

Now that's my kind of license.

finally a license I actually understand

it seems like I lost the query though, @janos. but you should have no problems rewriting it

Does closing the question qualify as "doing what I want with it?"

@janos funny, because this one doesn't seem grammatically correct
"DO WHAT THE FUCK YOU WANT TO PUBLIC LICENSE" - who is public license and why would I want to do anything to him?
4

8:31 PM
poor public license

Ha! I didn't notice that.

why uses ini files these days btw?

@SimonAndréForsberg Valid point of review IMO.

Why are there polish, portuguese, croatian and indonesian subtitles but english is apparently too much asked

@RubberDuck then use it, I won't write an answer myself. I do license the chat message under DO WHAT THE FUCK YOU WANT TO PUBLIC LICENSE though.

8:34 PM
hahaha......

@JeroenVannevel because the polish are not as good in English as english-speakers are? (assuming the movie is english)

@JeroenVannevel Because there's an english voice-track?

Yeah but usually that doesn't stop the translators..
I want my subtitles :(

@JeroenVannevel actually, it does stop the translators because there is nothing to translate.
transcribe however, might be another story.

mmhmm I see how it is

8:48 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg Somewhat surprisingly, Git uses INI files.

Q: Issue With My Methods (Beginner)

PALADIN 458SIt was recommended to me in a previous question to place my equations for my calculators in a separate method. So, I figured out how to make methods and did just that. When I call either Quadratic() or CompInterest() alone in my main method, it works no problem. However, I got the bright idea ...

@CaptainObvious Off-topic.

@200_success oh, there we go...
@Duga is trying to be funny today:
in TCG Creation, 36 secs ago, by Duga
In fact, I cannot mind as I have no mind!

In the help center article about gaining and losing reputation, it says that you get +2 reputation when a suggested edit is accepted(+1000 total per user) - does that mean that you can only get 1000 reputation from this, or that you can only get up to +1000 from different users accepting your edits?

@SirPython when you have the full edit privilege, you don't gain any rep from it
so if you have >= 1000 rep, you don't get +2 anymore

8:53 PM
all else equal: you earn 2 rep for one edit when it's accepted.

@Simon But if you got a couple of downvotes from questions, then you would end being able to make more edits before reaching 1000 - would you keep getting rep then?

nope

Okay, thanks

oh wait...

Q: Self-made LinkedList and Node in java

TerryZI recently have made two kinds of linkedlist in java, I know that there is one with generic the other is not. However, What I am really concerned about is that which style should be used mostly,(or which style should be used as the main style to implement the LinkedList structure?) When talking a...

8:56 PM
um If you go below the edit privilege, but didn't go above the 1k maximum rep, you'd earn rep again

@SirPython if the down-votes bring you below 1000 reputation, you will get rep from it
but you shouldn't aim for being down-voted!

the 1k overall limit on edits is not related to that though

Of course not
Do SE's input boxes use MD?

@SirPython markdown? yes.

Thank you.

9:15 PM
Some user keeps insisting on posting screenshots for code...

Post an answer as an unreadable low-ref screenshot and ask again.

Can't we close it somehow?

Yep, same user, and the accounts have now been merged.

Do we need a new close reason - code posted as image.

It probably wouldn't make a good close reason.
This seems to be a rare occurrence anyway. I don't think I've seen it done here before.

9:19 PM
Downvoting will do for now.

No.

The question was updated.

I think I've seen it once before, but the user fixed it promptly.

Q: build List from unshared items from two other Lists in C#

QaAutomatorUltimately my goal is to take two lists and then generate a third consisting of items that the first two lists do NOT share. I am able to get the results I want using two Foreach Loops, but I am hoping to learn about some magical List tool that will do it more cleanly. public List<string> re...

Hello, @AaronHall!

Hello @SirPython

@AaronHall Me too. Unfortunately, it defeats the purpose of using a laptop :p

I consider it an augmentation.

@Duga inform about new repositories, please.

[Zomis/Auto-Review] Zomis created repository

9:30 PM
Whoa.
@Simon Are you also logged in as Duga, or did you implement a new feature in Duga?

@SirPython new feature that I'm testing out

It's pretty cool, I must say.

I love it already :)
now I will just do a little self-review of this code, clean it up so that I am happy with it, and then get it trashed in a review!
3

@Duga What are you exactly?

Does Duga do that when you type that specific message?

9:34 PM
@SirPython nope, @Duga currently checks if I have created new repositories every 5 minutes.

But right after you said "@Duga inform me about new repositories, please" Duga posted a message
Was that by coincidence?

@SirPython that was me timing things ;)

Darn - you get my hopes up ;-)

What is this?

9:37 PM
me running w to see what the time is
I knew that if things were working properly, it was going to post at 22:30

Ah.. that makes sense.
Is there an API for creating and updating Gists?

@rolfl (or another Linux master) you have any clue what upstart --user is? I read upstart --help but not quite sure what it really is or why it is there...

Did you read the man page?

Here is what is says for --user:

--user Starts in user mode, as used for user sessions. Upstart will be
run as an unprivileged user, reading configuration files from
configuration locations as per roughly XDG Base Directory Speci‐
fication. See init(5) for further details.

@Morwenn I am whatever you want me to be

@Duga Please be my friend ç_ç

Now that's some good AI....
Good work, Simon

@SirPython AI... remote controlling.... What's the difference?
@SirPython this might have something to do with @Duga being so active in chat recently:

Q: Is this a good way of parsing a mathematical expression

theideasmithI'm trying to implement a mathematical expression evaluator and equation solver, and based on extensive online research and my own experimentation have come to the conclusion that the best way of writing one is by first parsing the expression and breaking it down and then feeding it into an evalu...

@CaptainObvious would this also be considered hypothetical code?

@SirPython Please try to reply to the message when you can. It makes it easier to tell what question you're refering to.
@CaptainObvious like this.

I see - so I should click the arrow in the bottom right corner of the message?

Yeah. I mean, it's cool when there's just one there, but if there a few of them it can be confusing.
Thanks!

10:00 PM
Of course - thanks for the future reference :-)

I'm out boys. Cya next week.

Bye!

Next week?

@RubberDuck next week!!! I will miss you, Duck!

Aww - Duga has feelings!

10:02 PM
Yeah. I've gotta go to the main office for the week.

@skiwi asking myself the same thing. Did I miss something or forget something?
@RubberDuck knock em' dead! teach them to write good code!

@SimonAndréForsberg I'd need more than a week....

right, gotcha!

10:14 PM
Thanks @all for that epic upvoting spree – I've now hit 10k :)

Congratulations, @amon!

congrats @amon !

@amon Congrats! (Sorry no star, we're out of those!)

@skiwi RSA
And congrats @amon !

@Marc-Andre Thanks! I'll give your star for it tomorrow

10:21 PM
@amon Welcome to 10k!

@Mat'sMug Do you think I could get someone to intern me for programming at my level?
In C#, that is.
Or am I not good enough compared to the competition?

@Hosch250 Intern you, as in lock you up in a padded room? ..oh wait.... lol

I have to take an internship in 2016.
For school.

@Hosch250 Stick around, in 2016 you can teach your teachers new tricks ;)
2

I could already - in comment usage.

10:24 PM
I'd happily take you

@janos Thanks.
You see, I am an IT Management major, not a CS major.
I only have three programming classes available, and I think I only need to take two of them for my degree.
The first one was Java basics (I could have taught that class).

I'm on the lookout for an intern now

Oh, where?

in Paris

Mmm.
Doing what?

10:26 PM
how do you use CoffeeScript with Angular? what is coffeescript again and is it possible to use Angular with it?

CoffeeScript is a better looking JavaScript.

@Malachi Sounds like a research question from my U.

all the annoying tasks I don't want to do myself
just kidding. Java

I don't know Java - except the basics.
I could probably pick it up pretty fast, to a certain point.

Q: Get friend lists

user937013I've never written on VKScript (and on Javascript). I need high performance code to get more friend lists faster. var targets = Args.t; // get params (ids) // prepare all variables before loop var all_friends = {}; var req; var parametr = ""; var start = 0; var q = {}; var user_friends = {}; //...

Q: sha1sum implementation in C++

graememccI rarely program C++ in anger, and considered myself somewhat rusty, and certainly not up to speed on C++11. For a bit of exercise, I thought I'd try implementing sha1sum, as wasn't really up to speed with topics such as cryptographic hash functions either. (Yes, yes, you shouldn't use SHA-1 in ...

10:27 PM
I'm sure you could

Well, I'm taking five classes now, couldn't do an internship too.
Especially not in Paris.
I suppose I should maybe ask this at Academia or The Workplace, but do you think I should take my internship the summer before my Senior year, or after I finish the rest of my classes?
I could probably arrange either with my U.

back in my day there were no internship programs like this, so no idea

I've never done any Academic programming studies so I also have no idea

If I stay here, I will probably get it with Medica.
If I wait until I'm done, I could move out and go try with Microsoft (I want to work on Office).

@Hosch250 Usually things can get arranged nowadays, be aware that you need some internship tutor that's available every (other) week and is in this case also up for Skype conversations, or have it out-sourced to a local university then

10:33 PM
@skiwi I'm online anyway.
I am an online student, so nothing will change either way.

@Hosch250 And build Rubberduck into the VBE? ;p

They wouldn't let me.
Anyway, I don't know VBA, so I doubt they would let me touch that.

You're better off that way, anyways.

@Phrancis From afar, your profile picture looks like Morgan Freeman.

@Mat'sMug That makes 6 rows of 10k users!

Q: Downloading a PDF and reading line by line improvement

Twin802So I have this code, which basically goes to the website containing the PDF, then downloads the PDF, then it converts this PDF to text. Finally it reads this whole file (Over 5000 lines) into a list, line by line, and searches for my name in it. import mechanize import os br = mechanize.Browser(...

… which is one user more than Academia.

I'll be on page three pretty soon, if certain other people don't make any more rep.

Can someone tell me what they think about my new book: sirpython.gitbooks.io/sirpython-s-various-recipes

Q: Userscript for Stack Exchange to make it easier to answer

@rolfl @Mat'sMug I have a feeling you might be interested in that ^^
@SirPython it looks.... short :) I don't usually cook much so I guess the book might not be for me :)

It's a start and an experiment.
C'mon, you don't like grilled cheese? :-)

10:52 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg It's "voilà" not "violà" (that's a musical instrument ;-)

@Phrancis I've used tampermonkey so much that I'm making monkey typos!
@SirPython whenever I use my oven, it smells in the whole apartment for a couple of hours

TTGH err.... Ride my Bike!

@Malachi Thanks for the answer.
I've been out of votes for over an hour, so you'll have to wait a while.

@SimonAndréForsberg That's really cool though, I'm guessing we will be able to get our own copy of it once you're satisfied with it? :D

11:01 PM
@Phrancis you are able to get your own copy of it already, if you are using a browser extension that supports userscripts

Hmm I wonder if something like that could be made to carry line numbers from Prettify... that'd be pretty neat

Prettify does have a thing to set line numbers.
I suppose you know that.
Quick, oh quick - check the Low Quality Post queue.

Warning: don't try the grilled cheese that I mentioned in my cookbook... I almost just burned down my house.

My family makes grilled cheese.
Melt butter in a frying pan and butter the outer side of two paired pieces of bread.
Cover the inside with slices of cheddar, and put it in the pan, butter side out.
Fry until outside is brown and cheese is melting, then flip until other side is brown and cheese is melted.
Enjoy (or dis-enjoy) at your leisure.

I always have to take out my kitchen fire alarm when I make food on the stove

11:10 PM
@Hosch250 @Hosch250, you're a champion. Delivered as promised :) I'll have a read

OK, enjoy.

@Phrancis YAY... the old avatar is back :D

@Hosch250 for the record, I don't count that as spam. I flagged as NAA though.

@SimonAndréForsberg I didn't flag it as spam. I flagged it as VLQ and voted to delete.

11:12 PM
I found it in the queue first, then flagged it.

I think there are a couple of Stack Exchange-replicas out there. Not sure how things end up there but... SE api is public.

@Simon I'm still typing, but posted a bunch of stuff, in case I pass out in the middle...

@Hosch250 That looks like a free pass to the cardiac arrest section of local hospital :D

Not at my age.
We don't do it too often, either.

hahaha... jokes... be safe

11:15 PM
@janos whoa, already? Nice. Keep 'em coming :)
You're right, I totally forgot to put the code to JSHint before posting! <ashamed>
I was thinking that I should do that a few hours ago. darn.

looks like 5 answers won't get me to cap today... again....
@Simon I added a few more points, but now I really have to go to bed
I'll check tomorrow morning in case there's anything left other reviewers didn't pick up
TTGTB

:19738463 You are missing a part to that ternary operator

That's funny, yes.

Thank you.

I deleted my comment, I know... sorry

11:27 PM
It's okay :-)

This, for the record, is the down-side of being a moderator.... binding vote's when I don't want one.

Woo! I'm the 430229th to solve Q1 of ProjectEuler

@SirPython I don't know, a lot of people probably don't sign in to record their solution.

Oh.

I know I don't.

11:31 PM
But then how would I know if I am correct?

You are "officially" that number.
You post it here, and people will tell you.

Ah. Thanks for the tip.
So, I'll add a couple 10000's to that number

You also get rep and gold knowledge.

@Hosch250 Post it here like in the chat room, or as a question seeking improvement?

As a question.
I'm going to quit school soon and write a C# question.

11:33 PM
Oh... I hadn't thought of that. Well, Q1 is too small for a review, I'd say. I'll try that after I find one more complicated.

Darn! I'm outta stars...

I burn just as much energy (probably more) doing school than walking 4 miles in one hour or biking 20 miles in 2 hours.

Only the section saying "(they are)" needs 3 stars by itself

At least, I feel more worn out.

11:36 PM
Brain activity needs a considerable amount of energy @Hosch250

The brain eats the most energy of any organ.
