@LittleEva (re: assumptions, taking exception, proprietary attitudes, etc.) Tell me about it! It's a pretty common phenomenon around these parts though, no? Especially when it comes to the gender neutral questions.

8 hours later…
8:46 AM
@MattE.Эллен well sorry, "the applicant does not need to know bricks from baseplates", so sadly I do not qualify.

@RegDwigнt ah. well, maybe you'll have a bout of amnesia

If horrible things happen in Cambridge, I'm sure I will want to forget them.

9:21 AM
"to make children's lives better – and communities stronger – by making sure the fundamental value of play is understood, embraced and acted upon."
:-/

Hey there :D

10:04 AM
room topic changed to English Language & Usage: Did they really do it? Or is it right? [double-word-request]

10:17 AM
Hi pal :D

@RegDwigнt I'm not sure what you mean by that.

That is good.

@skillpatrol Hi there Skull, you're patrolling your skills now? That's cool. :D

It says nothing about his skills.
He patrols ours.
And in the most determined manner.

You got it pal @Nick :D

10:20 AM
@RegDwigнt Well, I always assumed he was patrolling his skulls too. Now, don't tell me he doesn't have a closet full of skeletons.

He does, but that's precisely because he is patrolling not his skull, of which he has but one.
To have a closet full of one skull, he'd need to be a mammoth, and/or have a closet that won't fit Tom Cruise.

Let's return to where the word "skullpatrol" comes from guys...

It comes from English.

Raider Nation

@RegDwigнt I can only assume you're inclined to the semantics of my words because it makes you sound knowledgeable (which I'm sure you are)

10:23 AM
lolwut
I'm just making conversation. You say shit, I say shit, and so forth.

shit = shit

How does talking about Tom Cruises in closets make me sound knowledgeable? That's common knowledge, dude.

SHIT > shit

@RegDwigнt You defecate not from your rear? This is madness.

No, this is Athens.
Madness is over there, in the middle of the street.

10:26 AM
@RegDwigнt No, I'm imagining it more as being over-constipated.

I think you are mistaking me for @Jasper. He's the one for all your shitting and constipation talk needs.

@RegDwigнt I'm familiar with that beautiful mind kickboxing OCD

Good for you. Then you will know that he mentions shit (= excrements) more often than all other people combined mention shit (= stuff).

Gabble, gabble spoil and babble: Chatters churn, and summon rabble.

> Plus, even if the second sentence is ungrammatically correct, can it be accepted in ordinary conversation?
We have a new category: ungrammatically correct.

And someone commented on that, "stellar question".
I think I will need some of them drugs yall seem to be taking.

hands Reg the beclomethasone

10:52 AM
Thank you. Now do some explaining why of all things you would call a variable SS.

@RegDwigнt I'm taking Green Tea. Lots of H2O and a some time on a chat messenger. These are the best and safest drugs you can get.

Why not UKIP, for example.

because using full words is for functions!

@Nick I don't need safest drugs. I need drugs that will make my ungrammatically correct writing accepted.

also, javascript allows 'SHIT' > 'shit', which is also false

10:53 AM
Are you people speaking English? It sounds like some code stuff.
@RegDwigнt I think that's called the facebook community.

We are talking Turbo Pascal 5.5, but we suck at it so much it looks like broken JavaScript.

Tautology.

@RegDwigнt ... Am I the only one who believes in the sanctity of a room's topic? I mean there are rooms on stackoverflow dedicated and I mean absolutely dedicated to this stuff.

@Nick eww. The facebook community is not a drug I would ever use. Can't I just, I dunno, smoke camel shit instead?

Sí, hablo inglés

10:55 AM
Sí, Enrique Inglésias.
@Nick whaaa, there's a room dedicated to Turbo Pascal 5.5? Show me. Show me!!!!!

D-D-D-D-Dora :D

@Nick luckily this room is dedicated to everything, including this room

@MattE.Эллен ¿Desde cuándo?

I think it says very clearly in the room description what this room is about, and I think we do follow the room description to a tee.

@RegDwigнt Well, just because this is the English SE doesn't mean we have a room for verbs and another one for nouns do we?

10:58 AM
We will even change the description every two hours or so, to further improve on its clarify and followability.

@MattE.Эллен Then why title it English Language & Usage. That's preposterous.

@Nick wait, you're a verb? Get the hell out of here!
Jeez. Who let this guy in?
Next thing you know, they'll be taking down our Confederate banner.

Suffer the little children, but not the witch to live. And how shall we separate the one from the other? By casting them upon the waters.

@tchrist Desde, um, Δευτερα

Desde, um, Mona.

11:00 AM
¡Qué monos sois!

@RegDwigнt yes

Well, this access to this room is granted to all with 20+ rep and also, the room's transcripts are open to the public. Even to search engines, I think. (I'll have to clarify on that with someone)

It is inconceivable that a verb gets 20+ rep. Not possible. Certainly not on my watch.

Lovely guitar your aunty plays.

@Nick because that's where we are!

11:03 AM
@RegDwigнt Call me a verb again and I will nick your throat.

/kick

@MattE.Эллен well, nick ta mere, what do I know!
@Nick go nick Ola's cage instead.

@RegDwigнt Who's Ola?

is deaf to the whales of nictitating membrains

Who the nick is Alice?

11:07 AM
de la Rocha.

Insane in the membrane, insane in the brain.
Yoshkar-Ola (Russian: Йошка́р-Ола́; Mari: Йошкар-Ола) is the capital city of the Mari El Republic, Russia. Population: 248,782 (2010 Census); 256,719 (2002 Census); 241,601 (1989 Census). == Names == Yoshkar-Ola means red city in Mari. The current name is the third to have been given to the city. The city was known as Tsaryovokokshaysk (Царёвококшайск) before 1919 and as Krasnokokshaysk (Краснококшайск) between 1919 and 1927. These names were derived from the name of the Malaya Kokshaga River, which runs through the city. The city's old Mari name was Charla (Чарла). == History == Yoshkar-Ola was...

hey! someone removed :(

@RegDwigнt Where do they have a cage? Are you talking (in a british way) about their nick?

there were at least two questions tagged with that

@MattE.Эллен Such fools! That will provoke the march of entomologists!
Can someone explain puns to Nick? I am too busy producing, can't be arsed doing the explaining as well.

11:11 AM
oh! no, I was on the unanswered tab
phew!

Yeah right as if that excuse helped Saruman.

Wah, my PC is having hardware problems. BSOD kind.

Bull Shit Of Disobedience.

Blue Screen of Death.

It's called the Red Ring of Death now, get with the times.

11:12 AM
Not an XBox.

Blubbery Skin of Dragons

I did say get with the times.

Brilliant shining oblong doom

XBox is so 2011.

No, that's Xbox One. The original Xbox is still very much 2015.

11:13 AM
When I upgraded to a new gaming console I went the PS4 route.

@MattE.Эллен Is there an app for this?

@Nick not yet!

And largely on the strength of The Last of Us Remastered, which is very probably The Best Console Game Ever.

@Robusto and all you got was the same city of tumble weeds labeled "gold" as anyone else in this console generation.

@MattE.Эллен , @RegDwigнt : From your names, I have to ask, are you from Russia?

11:14 AM
I am not

Yeah because Matt and Reg are very slavic.

I just saw the doctor.
Now I take 5 tablets every night.

iPads?

@RegDwigнt Nah, it's my go-to gaming experience now. I get tired of hunching over the computer keyboard after doing it all day, why would I want to do it at night too? Also: haters gonna hate.

11:16 AM
This is the first time I take 5.
This means a miracle is about to happen.

@RegDwigнt @MattE.Эллен Slightly, what's the word..um, curious about the weird letters you both share

@Robusto yeah that aspect of it we discussed. Still, just because the tumbleweed town is not on a PC, does not make the tumbleweeds go away, or the settlers come back.

@RegDwigнt It's good to see your owl again. This means a miracle is about to happen.

@JasperLoy Hey there buddy, it seems like you're a brighter shade of blue. It feels like the righter shade of blue for you :D

¿Lol? ¡Hola ola!

11:17 AM
@Nick Hello. What have you been up to?

@RegDwigнt I don't find the tumbleweeds you mention. But if I did, it would only remind me of The Big Lebowski.

Aug 4 '11 at 12:42, by Matt Ellen
Or we could go with a russian character, in honour of Reg

Like, I've spent the last fifteen months contemplating if I should get a One. And today it's still, and probably more that ever, "yeah um, why the fuck".

Tumbleweed is the codename for the openSUSE rolling distribution.

Д

11:19 AM
openSUSE is very popular where @RegDwigнt lives, I think.

@JasperLoy Depression. Chocolate. More Depression. Marshmallows. Life spiraling out of control. You know, the usual. Now, I'm slowly recovering.

@RegDwigнt Well, I got a PS4 given to me a year ago, and it's been great.

I never played on a PS or XBox.

@tchrist Your Л is in shackles, are you from South Carolina or what?

11:20 AM
jackals

I think computer games are boring. Girls are more interesting.

@Robusto played Bloodbourne's Identity yet?
@JasperLoy um, PS and XBox games are not computer games.

My house is infested with ants, red ants and black ants.
I see one ant every few minutes, then I squash it to pieces.

Also, girls are often more interested in your consoles than in yourself.
So I'd recommend getting one. Or five.

@RegDwigнt I have Bloodborne, but haven't really played it yet.

11:22 AM
I've watched too much Twitch of it to ever play it.

That day, there were strange insects in my room, about 50 of them on the floor.
I used masking tape to tape up all of them.

It looks superb, but it also looks completely identical start to finish. First chapter to last, you take a screenshot, it looks exactly the same.

@RegDwigнt Seriously, I do believe TLoU Remastered is the best console game I've ever played. If you get a chance you should give it a try.

I tried to google but I still don't know what they are.

The real Wish I Hadn't Bothered game was The Order: 1886. I mean, WTF? Poor game play, incomprehensible story, etc.

11:24 AM
Maybe I should call pest control when they next appear. Happens once or twice a year.

@RegDwigнt I watch a lot of gameplay videos too. I'm becoming more and more lazy, I think. It's a new level of low, really. First, men stop playing football then we begin watching football. Now, this. Next, we'll be watching people watching things.

Oh wait, I have tried Bloodborne. I wasn't a fan. I'm not a big fan of the You Only Learn By Dying track. You die a lot in TLoU but you do eventually figure out a coherent strategy, unlike BB where you just have to get lucky.

@Robusto I've seen a fair share of it on Twitch, and read a lot of reviews that went either way. I will not pretend it is a game I would consider getting.

Very few questions with bounties on Eng.

@JasperLoy Take an image and put it on one of those forums dedicated to identifying insects. Also link me to that forum.

I would like to do a quick survey.

@RegDwigнt What I like about it is it's so frickin' dark, and it involves moral choices, and you always feel like you're slightly behind the curve. In that respect, it's the Breaking Bad of console games. And I don't say that lightly. (Hmm, have we discussed this before? Feels like a déjà vu moment.)

@JasperLoy Call pest control only if it's bothering you. Live and let live. They're only anta. Not rats or cockaroaches.

When you scroll down, how many language fonts can you not see?

11:28 AM
@JasperLoy there are fewer than 500 questions with bounties on SO, and they have over 100 times as many questions

South Carolina license plate: First in treason, last in reason, and lynching’s never out of season.
3

On Ubuntu, I cannot see font for language 286.

@tchrist Giving North Carolina and Georgia something to look down on.

@Robusto that was the main criticism of the reviews that were critical: that quite a few of the moral choices are really amoral choices. I've not witnessed too much of it myself, I've mostly watched for the gameplay and the sneaking parts which I am generally not entirely uninterested in. But ultimately it left me cold. And it doesn't even look as good as I had hoped. It looks very, very good, but there's games out there that look much, much better.
Also, Ellen Paige. Gimme a break. Does she have to be in every game now?
Oh, and of course this hype thing isn't helping. I'd probably be more willing to play it if it weren't overhyped by every fucking ten-year old.
I'm allergic like that.

@JasperLoy I can see it, I'm using ubuntu

11:31 AM
@RegDwigнt Juno / Shadowcat Ellen Paige? What are you talking about?

@MattE.Эллен Well, you must have installed something I haven't.

@JasperLoy perhaps

Now who can tell me the package to install?

11:32 AM
Never heard of Shadowcat. But yes, she played Juno. What is your question?

@RegDwigнt She plays games or she's part of games. Also Shadowcat is Kitty from X-Men

No, she "stars" in games.

@MattE.Эллен On a default Debian install, much worse. I can't see about 15 fonts.

@RegDwigнt Oh, can you tell me some titles? She appearing as herself or just voicing characters?

Which is another thing I don't get about the game business of today. If you've got a complete movie of actual actors acting everything, why not just go ahead and show me that movie. Why spend millions of dollars and mythical manmonths on showing me ten hours of uncanny valleys instead.

11:35 AM
titulates

@Nick voicing and motion capturing. Typically you can easily tell it's her even though they can never manage to make her look anywhere like herself.

@RegDwigнt I'm pretty fuckin' far from being a ten-year-old. So is my son, and we both enjoyed the shit out of it. And as for "amoral choices," that's pretty much what Breaking Bad boiled down to in the end, need I remind you?

Since there is Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Lubuntu, they should call Ubuntu GNOME Gubuntu and Ubuntu MATE Mubuntu instead. No consistency at all.

Amores Perros

@Robusto yeah I knew you would bring that up, of course. I dunno, if it's up for free with Gold one day, I'll grab it.
Also, not sure what you and your son not being ten-year olds has to do with the price of tea in China.

11:38 AM
@JasperLoy That's no big deal. You can install those fonts manually. Wikipedia, I think, also has pages where they link you to those missing font files. If such a page doesn't exist, please ask for it to made.

According to the star wall, England is a continent, France is an island and Germany is a river. Fascinating.

Still in denial?

@tchrist 'Da Nile isn't just a river in Egypt.

@Nick so anyway, The Last Of Us and Beyond Two Souls are two that immediately spring to mind.

@RegDwigнt You were the one who brought up the ten-year-old schtick as something which with to denigrate TLoU. I was just countering that.

11:40 AM
@Nick Surprisingly, Fedora lacks all kinds of important packages in a default install but has all the fonts.

flags the naughty word

Beyond Two Souls actually looks scarily photorealistic in places. Though it very much depends on what clothes she's wearing.

@RegDwigнt Have you become a millionaire from selling your LEGO ideas?

@Robusto nah, I said I am allergic to things overhyped by ten-year olds. They can very much be excellent things from an adult's perspective, but if they are overhyped by ten-year olds, then they are overhyped by ten-year olds. And I am allergic to that.

@JasperLoy I'm not familiar with anything beyond Windows but typically, font files can be manually added to the system's font directory.

11:43 AM
@Nick I see. I never manually installed any fonts myself anywhere. But installing TeX on Linux brings in a few hundred extra fonts.
For the programmers, did you know that you can use cp a.iso /dev/sdb to burn an image instead of dd?

pends

And I think in this case allergy is a really good word choice, rather than a trite metaphor. As in, it's not "I'm a hatorrrr, now lemme hate" but rather a natural reaction my organism gradually developed over the years all by itself.
Like, all ten-year olds went OMG Titanic. And then they went OMG Halo. And then they went OMG Obama. At some point, it was too much for my tortured body.

Titanic was a good movie.

ipse dixit

Jasper was a ten-year old.

11:47 AM
también

Obama is a good man.

On that note, RIP James Horner.

I don't know what Halo is.

Little Jack Horner sat in a corner.

@RegDwigнt This all so nice. Thank you for introducing me to it :D

11:48 AM
@RegDwigнt You fought me on Breaking Bad at first, you know.

@JasperLoy Next, you'll be saying you don't know what Legend of Zelda is.

titulaters

Little Red Riding Hood rode on me, LOL.

@Robusto I never fought anyone on anything. I am not fighting you on the Last of Us. I am just stating a fact. I am allergic to hype.
Also, wait a second, just when exactly did I fight you on Breaking Bad?
You said I should watch it, and I watched it, and I liked it.
I think you're confusing this with Community.

@RegDwigнt Early on, I was telling you how good it was and you thought I was exaggerating, giving you the fanboi spiel.

11:51 AM
That must've been the wrong impression. For that, I'd have had to know the first thing about the show. Which at the time I did not.
Only two people had ever even mentioned it to me. You and a close Italian friend of mine.
Now, Arrested Development, that one was overhyped at that time.
And so I still haven't watched it.
Breaking Bad most people have not even heard of even today.
Which is very strange.

Anyone I want to count as a friend must love Breaking Bad and The Big Lebowski. We can negotiate other stuff, but those two are firm.

I now know people who have never heard the words "The Big Lebowski" or "Jeff Bridges".
I am getting old.

I've liked Jeff Bridges since I first saw him in a little film called Bad Company. He's done some questionable roles, but he's always been entertaining, and I can't imagine TBL without him.

I think I first saw him in The Fisher King.

There seem to be 3 pages of Marias on ELU, LOL.

11:55 AM
Bad Company is a 1972 American Western film directed by Robert Benton, who also co-wrote the film with David Newman. It stars Barry Brown and Jeff Bridges as two of a group of young men who flee the draft during the American Civil War to seek their fortune and freedom on the unforgiving American frontier. This acid western attempts in many ways to demythologize the American West in its portrayal of young men forced by circumstance and drawn by romanticized accounts to forge new lives for themselves on the wrong side of the law. Their initial eagerness to be outlaws soon abates, however, when the...

Not that I paid any attention to the fact back then, of course.

Curious coincidence: David Huddleston (The Big Lebowski) played an outlaw in Bad Company.

@Robusto yeah sadly I've watched the wrong Bad Company, the one with Anthony Hopkins and Chris Rock. Jesus Christ, what a turd.
The correct Bad Company is still on my list.

Outlaws and inlaws don't get along.

So anyway. I think you really are confusing BB with Community. That one I did tell you I found meh after watching a couple episodes. Then we had a lengthy and boring discussion about being immersed in the American culture yada yada. For BB, nothing of that sort happened that I can possibly remember.
The first thing I told you about BB was that I enjoyed the I-am-the-one-who-knocks scene, and then you told me that WTF that's season four, what do you think you're thinking, OMG OMG that's irreparable damage.

12:04 PM
Ah, OK.
I'm confusing you with someone else then.
I've had several conversations where people thought I was hyping BB beyond its capacity to deliver, only to have them come back to me later and tell me they thought I was actually underselling it.

Yeah I dunno, again, things like Arrested Development are way more hyped. As I am thinking about it right now, really nobody tried to sell me BB...
Everyone was trying to sell Mad Men instead. And Game of Thrones.
Though you were at least that one guy with an original reason to like Mad Men.

@RegDwigнt I never cared for that show.

There's no a mount of hype that can overrate Sense8... wait... no hype is too much hype for Sense8... wait.. that's not right either...

@RegDwigнt I don't recall giving you a reason for that. What was it?

Don't watch Sense8, it sucks.

12:19 PM
What about Scorpion?

Mad Men is a show that started interesting, became soapy, then petered out.

How about Gotham?

@Nick Why would you watch a show that gives its name as a self-closing XML element that has its close at the beginning of the tag. Looks kinda stupid to me.

@Robusto you said something like you lived in that time so it was naturally of interest to you. To which, of course, I said that I did not live back then so naturally it was of less interest to me, but that's beside the point. The point is, you had a reason. Everyone else was just watch it watch it watch it now wtf why are you not watching it.

It got less interesting as time moved on.

12:20 PM
@JasperLoy they get along like brothers.

The final season and final episode tried to be a big warm hug, with Everything Forgiven.

In that department, BB became of great help as well. I could tell people I was not watching Mad Men because I had better things to do, and it was a fact.

@Robusto I haven't but now since you've told me it's spelt as </ Scorpion> I don't think I ever will.

Right?

Left?

12:22 PM
Malcolm in the Middle?

rusty around the edges

His dad's cooking meth

We're watching another AMC show now, Halt and Catch Fire, because I also lived through that era, but the series rings kinda false so far.

@RegDwigнt I never saw that kid after Cody Banks. He did a cameo in Lizzie Mcguire as himself. I've always assumed Hillary did Agent Cody Banks with him to repay that debt or something.

@Nick Cody Banks is cute.
Hmm, sometimes I feel I am gay.

12:28 PM
@Nick I think I read a Reddit AMA that he did.
At the very least, I remember someone posting on Reddit some Tweet in which Frankie Muniz told someone how rich he was.

@JasperLoy Not everyone is 100% straight. Everyone is like bisexual with a quantified preference for some gender... or object... with the attributes it gets weird.

Sure enough, it is googleable.

@RegDwigнt I envy him.

I do not.
I'd rather be retired with $40M at 90 than being retired with $40M at 19.

@JasperLoy Have you thought about talking to your doctor about these feelings?

12:33 PM
I envy many people these days, since I have nothing much left.
@skillpatrol No, it's not relevant.

It does affect your feelings.
@JasperLoy That, my friend, makes it relevant :-)

@RegDwigнt Have you finally watched Sommersturm?

No, I've not even started with True Detective.
My to-watch list is currently estimated to be up to deep. The list is about long but has a mean width of only.

Russian servers have lots of pirated movies and books. Good for me.
Does that mean I am a pirate?

You wish.
Just because you can eat pizza, doesn't make you Italian.

12:42 PM
I wish to get well soon and marry Laura Ramsey.

What does Laura Ramsey wish?

I don't know. I hope her wish is to marry me.

What the... they are making yet another Spider-Man reboot?
The next Spider-Man.

This is getting ridiculouser and ridiculouser.
Here is my national board of review:

12:46 PM
I'm the chairman of the board

I am the cupboard of the chair.

Hi @tchrist :-)

@MattE.Эллен *bored

If I pass the review, I will be pronounced the worldcupboard.
@Robusto *Bluebored.

I am the board.

12:48 PM
You are out of your element, walrus.

I am glad ELU is turning into ELL. Like I said, they should be merged.
Too much fragmentation is not good.

TIL that Bluebeard is a folktale of type 312 and 312A.

Leads to segmentation faults.

Thank you, Google.

@JasperLoy What do you care? You'll only delete your account again eventually.
We're down here with our noses in it every day.

@Robusto Hmm, I think I will keep this one for life.

That Aarne-Thompson Urethra sure had a lot of time on his hands to come up with 312+ different tale types. I couldn't even name 312 different tales.

Urethra?

No, you.

Ureter.
Urine.
Urea.

12:53 PM
City of Ulster.

Uvula.
Vulva.

This is a family-friendly chat about English.
Even Ulster barely qualifies, and you go vulva on us!

Viola.
Voila.

Roses are pink, violets are violet.

By the way, Maria got married last weekend.

12:56 PM
And Deborah got divorced.

@RegDwigнt Can't have a family without involving vulvae at some point of the process.
Usually in the planning stage.

@terdon infusoria would like a word with you.

@RegDwigнt How do you maintain this list, btw. IMdB?

It's mostly in my head, the stuff I know I want to watch. The IMDb list is for things that I come across mentioned in reviews of other things that I have watched and never know if I want to watch or not.
