Q: Java Data Persistence

Malik BrahimiRight off the bat I know that this is off topic, but I was wondering if I could get some feedback on the library I created to persist data online. Usage is as follows after adding the Jar file to the project build path. I'm only sixteen so go easy on me before you downvote for a lack a relevance....

12:17 AM
@CaptainObvious that one is... problematic...
Asking us for feedback on a library when the only code in the question is some usage of the library?

I made a comment regarding that.

@MotokoKusanagi good comment. well done.

^

And welcome to The 2nd Monitor, don't think I've seen you here before.

:)
I feel like just pasting the code for him.
ah there it is

Code Review isn't getting much response. — Malik Brahimi 1 min ago
If you know it is off topic for SO, why post it? Questions that are off topic will be closed. "if I could get some feedback on the library I created " So, you're looking for a code review? In that case CodeReview might be the right place to ask. — MAV 2 mins ago

A: Shortening JPA criteria query boilerplate

PiotrUnfortunately this is jpa criteria specification problem. Consider using mysema querydsl (www.querydsl.com). It has much more concise syntax. Documentation contains jpa criteria comparisons, see this blog http://blog.mysema.com/2010/04/querydsl-as-alternative-to-jpa-2.html?m=1

Not a good answer.

I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. I edited out those statements; and they accepted the edit.

Or is it?

@Duga If you know it is off topic for SO, why post it? <--- that

12:30 AM
@Hosch250 The first question you should ask is: Is it an answer?

It is an "answer" - at least it was posted as one.
Is it a valid/good answer? I don't think so.

@Hosch250 Just because it is posted as one doesn't mean that it is one.
I am not sure if this one is one or not though.

Me either.

The man has a point though that using mysema querydsl might be more consise. Never used that myself though.

12:33 AM
To me it translates to: "What you are doing is wrong. Do this other thing instead. Read [my?] blog.
imo

> Querydsl is licensed under the Apache 2.0 license
at least it's not spam.
I also wondered if the answerer is involved in the project in any way, but I am ready to give the benefit of the doubt and assume that he's not.

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because this question belongs on CodeReview, where it has already been asked. — MAV 1 min ago

This code contains syntax errors and is not ready for review. — mjolka 40 mins ago
@mjolka What's the syntax errors? ^^
Also, is that one real code?

@SimonAndréForsberg it's hard to see with the formatting, but this line }, token);should be }}, token); and then one of the following } has to be removed

@SimonAndréForsberg Thanks for the information. In this case though the question is off topic. I probably should have written that in the close reason instead of redirecting to CodeReview. Again, thanks. — MAV 1 min ago

@mjolka that question seems to be example code.

Q: How to use/ignore letters in postfix operations (Java)

Sango DragonI could get how to do variables fairly easily "if (charCheck == 'x') stack.push(3);" or whatever. Guess I'll try SO, I can't figure out what the issue is. Will post here if anyone wants to take a stab at it

post here first
don't go to SO
that's a typical syntax error
I'll take a look at it

Um ok just a sec
public abstract class Shape {
	public abstract double area();
	public abstract double perimeter();
}

public class Circle extends Shape {
	private final double radius;
	final double pi = Math.PI;

	public Circle(double radius) {
		@Override
		double getArea() {
			// A = π r^2
			return pi * Math.pow(radius, 2);
		}
		@Override
		double getPerimeter() {
			// P = 2πr
			return 2 * pi * radius;
		}
	}
}

public class TestShape {
	public static void main(String[] args) {
		double circleRadius = 5;
I figure I might not be using constructor correctly, but wasn't able to find anything helpful in the manual
Main.java:25: error: ';' expected
		double getArea() {
		              ^
Main.java:30: error: ';' expected
		double getPerimeter() {
		                   ^

you have methods inside your constructor
put them outside of it
everything will work then

Ahhh ok let me try that, thank you kind sir :)

(as long as you assign to radius in the constructor)

3:37 AM
Gotcha
Guess this ideone thing is not ideal if you need multiple files for classes, and above doesn't work without public classes guess I better fire up Eclipse now :)

Ooooo, Heron's formula for calculating triangle area, pretty sweet

@Phrancis Width of base * Height * .5
Of course, if you don't know any of those, it will be tricky.

@chillworld they aren't static by default, but you can add also static methods.

@Heslacher thx, you made me a hapy guy who want's now java 8 at work :)
problem with mvvm in zk is that I create gui pages without any VM attached.

I would also love to get Java 8 at my hands at work, but unfortunately our customer uses Java 6 :-(

I include those pages in a total page to show and decare there the viewmodel for that whole page
so now I have to implement certain methods 2 or more. (sometimes with minor changes)
and I can't extend more then 1 abstract class
so that could be the solution for mine duplicated code ^^
@Heslacher we just upgraded to java 7
already thankfull for the try catch with resources, switch on strings(however never used it) and multicatch ^^

Morning
Is it possible to call methods on an object before its constructor has finished, provided it does not pass its own reference to any methods it calls?

10:32 AM
From inside the object, yes, otherwise, no

Asking in the context of thread safety, have to change a previously single threaded class to multi-thread environment

(i.e, a constructor can call it's own instance method, provided it doesn't leak this)
unless I am misunderstanding the question

seems like you understood properly
these kinds of questions are hard to google =/

JCIP

Why are you calling a function inside of a constructor anyway? Constructors should only capture parameters

10:35 AM
Nahhh... constructors can do so much more ;-)
@Pimgd - often, a good test for the constructor, is to make all methods that are called static, and to see what breaks

... My constructor starts a separate thread for retrieving parameters from a networked device

I can sing. Doesn't mean I should. :p
3

@Pimgd OH, that sounds like a bad idea.

is it?

> My constructor starts a separate thread

10:36 AM
You're my HERO6
2

This is a mistake why?

how does starting a thread in my constructor make me a better healthcare assistant

Is the construction incomplete until the other thread completes?

The construction is done perfectly fine, the initialization is not

10:38 AM
I have to run.... It's a complicated question, and I would have to see the code ;-)
But, now it's time to eat

Okay I suppose if you follow the idea that the object should do as little as possible and just request what it needs then I need a factory to create the object... eventually....
Async factories...
That sounds like not-async at all

likely to be blocking

if you need to create an async factory you need to rethink your design
(at least in this circumstance)

...
The alternative is two method calls in a row, I guess?

10:42 AM
Is the object going to always be based on data downloaded from the network?

	public CameraStreamRecorder(DeviceCommunicator device, int streamIndexToRecordFrom){
		this.device = device;
		streamIndex = streamIndexToRecordFrom;
		keepRunning = true;
		initialize();
	}

	private void initialize() {
		camera = new Camera(device);
		initializeStream();
	}

	private void initializeStream(){
		final CameraStreamRecorder instance = this;
		final StreamComponent streamComponent = camera.getStreamComponent();
		streamComponent.requestGetStreams(new CameraRequestListener<List<StreamInfo>>(){

The data can never be cached and stored locally?
To me it sounds like you should asynchronously retrieve the data and construct once you've retrieved the data.

I has a race condition.

quite.

10:44 AM
I'm going to work--perhaps I will rejoin this conversation from my phone when I get there.

requestGetStreams starts a thread...
And the scheduler is allowed to just stop my constructor there and run that new thread

refactor the code so that you construct the object wit hthe result of requestGetStreams.

then the listener comes around

Your factory has the responsability of calling requestGetStreams

and bad results were returned, so now we're passing this to RecordingServer.onUnavailableStreamIndex(instance) which is not gonna understand
bleeeh

10:45 AM
Instead of
class A {
  private final B b;
  public A() {
    this.b = GetB();
  }
}

class B {

}
Use
class A {
  public A(B b) {
    this.b = b;
  }
}
it's the same principle as whaty ou have now, you need to move your async further up the stack

private boolean restartRecording(){
		if(recordingStream.isOpen()){
			return true;
		}

		//Have you tried turning it off and on again?

		boolean oldKeepRunning = keepRunning;
		FFMPEGMonitor.stopRecording(getNabtoID());
		keepRunning = oldKeepRunning;//ignore stop command effect
		if(recordingStream.openStream()){
			startRecording();
			return true;
		}
		return false;
	}
I need this to restart if something goes wrong

What happens if something never goes right? won't that continue forever?

never?
err.

can you read Javascript?

yes

10:48 AM
I'tll be eaiser for me to rewrite this like that

I only need a recordingStream anyway
I have seen what I gotta do I think
Yep
Construction moves to a factory
or at least a separate thread in and of itself
the only change from the usual factory pattern is that the factory is gonna be delivering the goods too

Q: My Google Maps Script v2

Kid DiamondMy Google Maps Script v1 Using the Google Maps JavaScript API v3. Does my script have any room for improvement? I'm going to pair it with some live time functionality, so that whenever the map its location changes the time would be updated accordingly. I've added this script to my HTML code...

still need me to refacto rit

only once I have a V2 in 1-3 hours
that's better efficiency of your time - basically stops be from wasting all my "credits" on the first iteration

Lol...

lol
I'm happy to help
it lets me procrastinate bureaucractic wank
which id rather not do

11:10 AM
okay
I'm running into an issue atm where if I have my object prepreration async...
then I can receive the stop command before I'm done
how do I handle this...?

what do you mean?

You have a factory that creates objects and is blocking
you wrap that in a separate thread that waits on the factory and then adds it to the collection

> and is blocking
> you wrap that in a separate thread that waits on the factory

but before that, you can receive a stop command

After having doing NodeJS for so long, this makes me sad

11:13 AM
yeah well I can have the factory start a new thread too but then I have to deal with async on the layer above
I can also have the factory directly alter the collection
but I feel that couples it too tightly.
Another option is proxy objects, the factory immediately returns a box...

I think you need to stop thinking in terms of threads

and only later the object pops up in there

Why don't you do all the async stuff before you even start the constructor?

sure
how

function acquire(callback) {
  // simulate expensive operation
  setTimeout(function() {
    callback({});
  }, 5000);
};
in javascript, but you could easily do this in java.

11:16 AM
okay...

acquire(function(recordingStream) {

  var recorder = new CameraStreamRecorder(recordingStream));
/// ....
});
then, that

function start(){
    acquire(add);
}
function stop(){
    remove():
}
function add(){
   items++;
}
function remove(){
  items--;
}
how to prevent items from going negative here?
or, after start-stop, be at 1? That'd also be bad

What on earth are you trying to achieve here
0.o

It opens a stream, starts recording
later it stops recording

so what's the adding for?

11:19 AM
and items-- has what to do with recording?

... pseudo crap

We need your proper problem space here tow ork out what you actually need.
You want to open a stream, then start recording, and at some indeterminate poin tin the future, stopr ecording. right?

private static final Set<CameraStreamRecorder> streamRecorders = new HashSet<CameraStreamRecorder>();
I have that somewhere

forget about your code for a second
what do you want your code to do

I'd like to add streamRecorders that have started recording to that set
So that I can monitor them to see if they're still working every now and then

11:20 AM
Right, OK
And what do you want to do with those that are recording?
wow, lag

also, at some point, I have to make them stop recording

Ok, well here's what I would do, personally

either on shutdown or on command

- Start recording
- Have the stream recorder report when something is wrong with itself
- Enable a call on the stream recorder to stop it

eh hang on let me check
So that I can monitor them to see if they're still working every now and then shut them all down on system shutdown

11:23 AM
var recorder = (function() {
  // Constructor for recorder
  return function(stream, errorHandler) {
    var instance = this;
    instance.recording = true;

    // Return a function that lets us stop the recording
    return function() {
      instance.recording = false;
    }
  };

}());

var stop = recorder(myStream, function(err) {
  console.log(err);
});

// Stops recording
stop();
Again in JavaScript, but I've put an example of usage

Right...
but uh

if something goes wrong, we invoke errorHandler()
The recorder tells the world when something is wrong (not the other way around)

function startRecording(){
var recorder = (function() {
  // Constructor for recorder
  return function(stream, errorHandler) {
    var instance = this;
    instance.recording = true;

    // Return a function that lets us stop the recording
    return function() {
      instance.recording = false;
    }
  };

}());

var stop = recorder(myStream, function(err) {
  console.log(err);
});

recorderStops.add(stop);
}
this is what I have, kind of

Q: Importing MySQL Database to a .txt File

camelCaseWe just finished working on a Database project in Java Netbeans. As we mentioned on our proposal we added the feature Import which will import the database record of one user to a text file. Here is my code: String IMPORT_QUERY = "SELECT pe.entry_id ID, pe.entry_account ACCOUNT, pe.entry_us...

how do I handle the case where startRecording() is called, and before it can even do anything, stopRecording() is called?

11:26 AM
synchronization....

on...?

if stop-recording can be called before startrecording completes, it requires two threads to be operational, right?

actually in my example stop recording cannot be called
before start recording

sure, I see how sync helps

because in order for stop recording to be called, the recorder must be fully formed

11:27 AM
@DanPantry that's very nice, but I still get two requests in a row
Your implementation would result in "I don't have a recorder of that kind running at the moment"
then happily continuing to start it up

This is why threads are annoying
@_@
Ok, where is start recording called
am I right in assuming you create a recorder, then call startRecording on that recorder

startRecording(cameraName, cameraPassword, streamIndex)
public interface.

on what?

the dang server.

I was referrign to startRecording()
which you call in your initializeStream()
inside of CameraStreamRecorder

11:30 AM
Opens a connection to the camera, authenticates, retrieves stream information, checks if it can find the requested streamIndex, creates a peer-to-peer tunnel (via relay if p2p not possible) and then finally starts recording it to disk by running an ffmpeg command with the url of the tunnel
eh

Right, now I understand :p

I guess I need to do some better function naming
RecordingServer's startRecording does the whole thing

I think you just need ad ifferent angle

CameraStreamRecording's startRecording does...

Does it return a control object?

11:31 AM
you're getting synchronization involved when it doesn't need to, for example

retrieves stream information, checks if it can find the requested streamIndex, creates a peer-to-peer tunnel (via relay if p2p not possible)
that bit

If you have a race condition, you need to rethink how your design works
I would say "let's do it after you're done in a code review" but it feels that this is a complex solution and it would be hard to review it without rewriting it
(which is why I'm suggesting we help now rather than later)
But yes clearer names would definitely help us help you
Also remember that if you need to say 'and' when describing a method, you probably need to break it down into smaller chunks

... "starts the recording process".

:p
> Opens a connection to the camera, authenticates, retrieves stream information, checks if it can find the requested streamIndex, creates a peer-to-peer tunnel (via relay if p2p not possible) and then finally starts recording it to disk by running an ffmpeg command with the url of the tunnel

=)

11:35 AM
that's what initializeStream
does?
right?

no, that's RecordingServer's startRecording

Can somebody help me with floating point?

hm
@Pimgd is this on github?

initializeStream does "retrieves stream information, checks if it can find the requested streamIndex, creates a peer-to-peer tunnel (via relay if p2p not possible)"
Nope

@overexchange what about it?

I am surprised python does not take it to more decimals

> On a typical machine running Python, there are 53 bits of precision available for a Python float,

@overexchange - it is standard practice to never do == comparisons with floating point numbers in any language

Someone star that so I can too.

"equals" in floating pint is always "within an acceptable margin of error"

The answer is basically saying that 0.3333333 is not 1/3.

which is correct

@DanPantry I would like to know, how to multiply by 3 here? The fractional part is in binary: (0.01010101…)2=(0.333333…)10. To convince yourself of this, try multiplying the binary 0.0101010101… by 3: you will get 0.111111…=1.

number * 3
:^)
In all seriousness I am not a python programmer and I did not take computer science; I am likely not equipped to answer that
I only know a few tidbits here and there about actual computer science

oh multiply by 11 ?

you know, all of this is a lot easier if I can just create a control object

@pimgd lemme know when you're ready friend

CameraStreamInfo

likely is, that's what I was trying to show with the method that returned a function that let you invoke it to stop it

holding camera name, password, streamIndex, whether it should be recording
ehhh
I'm back to where I started, with a single moved function call
and a boolean flag

lol
gist it up
I'm sure we can work out what you can do to fix it

Does it return a control object?

11:47 AM
oh I see there's a couple more changes
chances are I first have to convert this to a control object + controlled object in one
then split it in two

(going to keep finding images of baymax saying this)
a control object does sound like a good ways toward a solution though

@overexchange it seems like a lot of things you want to discuss are more inline with Programmers. Have you ever visited their chat room?

Q: Printing calculator- stephen kochan programming in C question

Divya MathurI'm a newbie at programming, just one month into C. Working with stephen kochan's programming in C. There is a question in chapter 6 to write a printing calculator where 's' tell the program to set the accumulator, 'e' tells that the execution must end. And the operators tell the operations to be...

that was fast, @rolfl
