Q: AMD 8 core vs. Intel 8 core - Are they too much different?

user2544765So somebody was telling me that an AMD 8 core processor only really has 6 cores as opposed to an Intel having a full 8 cores. Is there any truth to this at all?

whut?

How do you choose the right DDR3 memory for an LGA 1150 motherboard and, say, an Intel Core i5-4690K Processor running at 3.5 GHz?

@RobertHarvey You'd want to get at least DDR3-1833 for optimal performance. If your processor is unlocked, the ability to use high-performance memory modules is ultimately governed by the motherboard.
Learn more about XMP and memory overclocking here
However, most benchmarks show that memory faster than DDR3-1866 has limited performance benefits except in memory-intensive applications, and premium low-latency modules may sometimes deliver better performance than modules with higher bandwidth
...and I meant DDR3-1866, not DDR3-1833

3:13 AM
@DragonLord So if I'm an average, run-of-the-mill desktop user (Visual Studio is probably my heaviest application), the DDR3-1600 RAM that Amazon recommended might be more than adequate?

3:27 AM
@RobertHarvey: pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/… is worth a read
tldr - Unless you overclock, or have a APU, high frequency ram is not really worth it.

Ok, thanks.

This is new behavior

safe mode?
Also, by downloaded, you mean off store apps?

@JourneymanGeek All non-system apps
Safe mode has always been part of Android

In 4.4 and earlier, Android would disable all downloaded apps which loaded at startup in safe mode

@JourneymanGeek Make that 8th

Your recent posts indicate what appears to be "rep-whoring", through the posting of hard-to-understand content to look like an expert in an attempt to quickly gain reputation. Unfortunately, that's counterproductive here. We expect real, useful information on Stack Exchange, not puffery. — DragonLord 3 mins ago

@DragonLord That's not "rep whoring" by any measure. It's straight up bullshitting. Probably more as a troll than trying to get any rep.

So. What's the official policy in the case of a stream of bullshit answers?
I suppose maybe downvotes, but that'd probably be regarded as serial downvoting. Especially at this rate.

5:02 AM
That's a good question

This guy is just being a smartass
Port forwarding bypasses the firewall if your using a linksys router. I'm sorry that i didn't ask for the router information before hand, and I'm sorry that I may have angered your in any war. I'm just trying to help from my own experiences in the IT industry and my Computer Science degree to solve many rudimentary but intriguing problems that people ask for solutions along with experience to help them more forward in their projects. — penn 4 mins ago
There's nothing special about a computer science degree by itself. I myself hold a CS degree with high honors and know for certain that the firewall needs to be reconfigured. Port forwarding is unnecessary and irrelevant. — DragonLord 1 min ago

I'm waffling between a suspension and a account destroy.

Bob
...except CS degrees have little to nothing to do with port forwarding w/ NAT...
You can probably stop feeding the troll now :P
@JourneymanGeek I suppose official SE would probably just say downvote.
Are answers rate limited?

Oh, that's automagical.
Oh screw it.
Nuked

@JourneymanGeek If I were a moderator, I would send a mod message first, then delete the account if user fails to correct behavior

@DragonLord: He's posted NINE answers like this.

@JourneymanGeek I would have given a warning before it got to this stage.

Bob
@DragonLord I don't think this guy is interested in warnings.
This isn't accidental.
It's very intentionally writing random crap to get a reaction. i.e. trolling.

@DragonLord: if he had posted one good answer, and/or had registered. Yeah.

I did see a couple of reasonable attempts to answer a question.
I agree that the user needed to be nuked at this point, though.

@DragonLord: which on closer reading, were entirely useless too.

It is!
and meh, asking for clarification is entirely fine.
You generally assume good intentions from posters (even says so on the help) unless proven otherwise.

Bob
@DragonLord I don't think anyone would even notice them, and if they did most won't care too much.
@JourneymanGeek I had to re-read the first answer a few times. Actually thought he was serious for a bit.

Ideally, downvotes would be enough. But spreading obvious misinformation across the whole site?
@DragonLord This is the only one I could find that might be correct, but at this point I wouldn't trust this guy if he told me the sky was blue.

How would you go into bios if quickboot was on? ;p
IIRC you had to disable it from the OS or something, right?

@JourneymanGeek, you have far more experience here than me with more than 70k rep. I've spent some time in the 10k tools but haven't encountered any obvious pattern of abuse using the tools.

@DragonLord: 20K tools arn't good for that.

Bob
The 10k tools became mostly irrelevant after reviews were introduced.

And some mods are better than others at spotting stuff like that. There's quite a lot of stuff we may still need help with - like the issue bob had with serial downvotes.

Bob
5:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek ...there are no 20k tools? :P

@Bob: 20K lets you protect posts ;p
IIRC

Bob
Oh yea.
I don't think I've actually done that yet.

I'll see if I can spend more time doing reviews and stuff to uncover more abuse. In the past, I've caught all sorts of sneaky spam that others miss.
@JourneymanGeek You can protect questions at 15k.

@DragonLord Eh, that was my opinion anyway. I was just searching for any community consensus one way or another - I didn't know what the consensus was, or even if this was raised, five minutes ago.

@DragonLord: meh, I'd leave it as is.

Other than the seekrit mod stuff like the flag queue, you can do a lot of what I do now

13.4k isn't really much
There's still a lot of work to do

@DragonLord: soft power is pretty important.
In my case, least on SU, I used my understanding of how things work, and posted a fair bit on meta. I also tend to comment a fair bit to nudge people.
Over time this gets you a ton of visibility.
I also happen to be fairly cross site, so if someone on AU or SF, they may know me. I'm pretty sure I got the entire comms room vote ;p

@JourneymanGeek Five years of membership
I guess I'll just have to commit more time to helping the community.

@DragonLord: I'm pretty sure there's folks who have been here longer, with more rep, with less of a good reputation.

I'll also spend more a lot more time on Meta

Its not quantity, its quality ;p

@JourneymanGeek OQOD?

6:17 AM
@DragonLord: I disagree.
One question One Day ;p
(since I keep mispelling one question a day)

Bob
Ah.

It takes a long time to write good quality responses. The impatient may simply downvote or vote to close without explaining. While I do tend to VTC without explaining, I'm aware of the issue and will do my very best to support users new to Stack Exchange.
All of this extra work takes time and patience.
Patience is key to being a good moderator.

@DragonLord: per forma comments may help there
I don't use them, but a lot of mods do

Bob
@DragonLord Most of my longer/higher-voted answers actually didn't take that long, surprisingly.

I'll try to commit at least 30 minutes every day whenever I can

Naw. If you want to spend the time, do it cause its fun for you.

@JourneymanGeek It's my passion to help others.
It all began in my freshman year in undergraduate college when I found several different websites with the same design theme: upvote/downvote controls, Questions/Tags/Users/Badges/Unanswered/Ask Question buttons, and a banner that always said "Welcome to Q&A for ... check out the FAQ"
That's when I discovered Stack Exchange.

Until I retrain myself to be more patient and stronger willed, I may simply refuse to run for moderator when the next election comes along

Mods arn't perfectly calm and infallible XD

I suppose by the time there's a new election, I'll be a far different beast than I am now
This is just as much an issue for me in real life as it is online.
My actions in cyberspace reflect my real-world personality, and I'm running a huge personal project to fix these issues.
I'm usually well-behaved online, but sometimes my lack of self-control gets to me.
@JourneymanGeek Of course, there's no such thing as perfection, but we can all strive to be better people.

eh, I can't find it, but I messed up badly enough the other day that a user suggested I take a nap.

A: How to know a disk is SSD or not on Windows 8

DragonLordActually, there's a much simpler solution. Windows Drive Optimizer (formerly Disk Defragmenter) reports whether a drive is an HDD or SSD. You can access this utility by pressing Windows+S, searching for "optimize", and selecting Defragment and optimize your drives.

Bob
Note that most of these solutions will only work if the drives are directly connected. If they're part of a RAID volume, the OS likely won't be able to tell what the underlying storage is. — Bob 5 secs ago

Could I ask a few questions about a TV I bought in here? Not sure if super user is the right place.

Bob
@William'MindWorX'Mariager In chat, sure. On main, no.

Alright :P
Well, I bought this TV, that said 100Hz in the ad.
> This TV is compatible with HDMI resolution up to 3840x2160 30Hz. All HDMI inputs
accept 4K (3840x2160 30Hz) signals.
But that's from the manual.

Bob
There's a distinction between display refresh rate and the max framerate through HDMI.
If it takes DisplayPort, that probably goes higher.
@JourneymanGeek Any chance of getting links to the other answers by that deleted user?
I only have two of them :(

@Bob Hmm. Only has VGA besides the three HDMI ports.
All ports have the same specs as far as the manual states.
Seems the TV was sent out in two different versions. I got the gimped version. I'm trying to figure out if I have a case for getting a replacement.

AzkerMWe've been having this printing issue for the last two months where the printer stops taking prints over the network at a certain point. @JourneymanGeek Thanks!

I might have missed one or two.
@Bernhard: sorry about that
The japanese text, btw is also offensive

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, I just tried translating it :P

japanese speaking friend of mine says the phrasing is wierd.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Straight off Google Translate, probably.

10:11 AM
@AzkerM: The least you could include is the printer model, and how its connected?

@JourneymanGeek Eh, huh?

Hahaha, ok, np :p
ping works :p

;p
I'm not sure it counts when you ping the wrong person with a long list of posts he can't see anyway ;p

10:34 AM
@William'MindWorX'Mariager If it was advertised as 100Hz then you should have a fairly good case to get a replacement from the retailer you purchased it from.
It could even be possible they didn't know they were getting supplied with lower spec models as well.

Bob
@MichaelFrank The panel itself might refresh at 100Hz.

Well, as far as I can tell, it's just the display.

Bob
Wouldn't be the first time marketing spun it like that.

HDMI 1.4 is specified to 2160p30. HDMI 2.0 is specified to 2160p60. But this TV was advertised as HDMI 1.4, so I got what I paid for.
Now I just need to consider if I want to return it or live with it as it is. :)
It's still a cheap TV considering the features. I was just hoping it'd be a bit better. :P
The annoying thing is, the seller sent out two models. A better one and the one I got. But since the one I got matches the ad, there's not much of a case for getting it replaced with the better one.

It never hurts to try.

10:50 AM
Yeah, I'm going to call them tomorrow and see what they say.

@DragonLord I remember myself going to sleep that late. Woke up at 11AM at earliest with brainfog, impaired memory and felt like sack of shit. The day ran through fast, I didn't get to do a lot and it's already evening. Today I strive to sleep at least at 22:00PM because I am able to wake up at 6AM, do the exercise and be optimally productive. I try to make myself to go at 21:00PM to wake at 5AM because 5AM - 8AM are golden hours for ideas and productivity. Check Robin Sharma on YouTube.

Adjusting sleeping time isn't easy

So... I found a monitor in the trash. It's sortof a piece of #¤%& but it works. Now my issue is, it only has DSUB / VGA input and the image is really bad. Any tips for making it better? I already reset the monitor to factory defaults, and played around with the built-in image settings, but cant get a decent "pixel perfect" image. Any tips?

@JourneymanGeek But it's doable

^ link for the monitor specs

define bad
I assume resolution is native? Tried swapping the cable?

resolution native. Cable is one I had, worked fine previously with other monitors

It could just be shit ;p

11:44 AM
that's what I'm thinking too
gotta be a reason it was in the trash, after all
I will test with my desktop PC also, just to confirm it's not my laptop graphics that sends a shitty VGA signal

How is it shitty?

12:02 PM
I dont know exactly how to explain
the text is not sharp
it's very clear that the monitor is getting an analog signal
i.e. the pixels from the image aren't translating 1:1 to the pixels on the screen
and I got same result on my desktop
using the built in intel 4600 graphics

my "real" gfx does not have a VGA output
my best explanation is it looks "blurry" but that's not a very accurate description :p
Ive tried adjusting the clock and phase but nothing seems to help

is it only text?

also did 'factory reset' followed by 'auto adjust' on the monitor
it's very much visible on text
the background image looks okay-ish
I was thinking it might be the old "ClearType" thing windows used to do in the XP days
but cant find any setting for it in Win7

Try Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\
erm

12:09 PM
found it, will test with the new monitor
hang on
and by "new monitor" I mean "crappy old found-in-the-trash monitor" ;)

understood

it's still pretty damn crap :P

One can only polish a turd so much
and least it runs. I have a monitor that's been recapped, and apparently needs a replacement transistor of some sort according to the internet.

I've tried taking a pic with my phone, but it's hard to get an image to show the issue on a phone camera

12:18 PM
going through the "ClearType wizard" helped a bit

Yeah
different screens have different subpixel rendering

I'm sure it would be a lot better if the monitor had a digital input

@Psycogeek Are you leaving reviews after using products you buy?

@Boris_yo More often than not only for products that are good :-( "If you dont have anything good to say" Bah I dont last long enough to review a bad product, and I cant be sure it isnt ME
@Boris_yo The cat in tom and jerry was probably in the process of loosing its "9Lives" not its souls. but it is a freaking cartoon anyways , and creative licence means they can do anything .

@Psycogeek I am not US dweller so I am not familiar with traditions. In particular 9 lives.

@Boris_yo Yup, even long time razor shavers (not me i am electric 98% of the time) find that a simple single blade non-pivoting, non feature filled, not only works better, but is cheaper and that is what they use more often. Could have some to do with the patterns they aquired before this miracle of useless stuff existed.
@Boris_yo A cat is said to have "9 Lives" because it can get into so many bad situations, where it seems like it should at least be severly hurt, and it runs off like nothing happened. That isn't always true. Cats are too proud to tell how stupid they were, and how much that did hurt . They go off into a corner and lick thier wounds.

1:53 PM
@Psycogeek Today you don't invent - you improve upon.

The problem is not so much that programs are connecting to many different places to get stuff off the web, the problem is expecting that program to Work correct when it can no longer do that. Sites go down, domains change hands, things are abandoned. Having a web dependancy program , is more likely to be a program that you will not have forever. it will only work right as long as all the places it connects does.

Bit off topic from computers, but, do you guys think this will work? reddit.com/r/Android/comments/2m6sbm/nexus_5_lollipop_ota_link
I've got an LG Nexus 5 with the same build number, version 4.4.4

One of the problems with a program no longer working, is the Freaking Ammount of Time :-) the user had put into it , before all thier time is tossed into the trash.
@SimonSheehan There should be seedy little shops in back alleys , with people who root and rom phones for a living :-) Taking 2-3 days to stumble through it all, and hope it works, to find out you lost a feature here or there. It just would be so valuable if one person(s) made a whole paycheck, for knowing IF and How , and whipped it out in 10 minutes.

I think people do not realise how easily some of the new programs can be shut down and obsoleted on command. Or given various "acts of god" that would stop many things cold. Why are more users not aware when a program has connected to the web 25 times that day? They have wireshark, firewalls they assume work, and routers watching what goes here or there. But when a belkin router can no longer call home, it just Quits!
Why people do not see a trend that begins, and ends when (say) a whole block of level3 goes down for a week or so? "oh that cant happen, because they have re-routing methods" for failed hardware, not for tsunamies :-)

Well, update is now installing
fingers crossed
Passing verifying update and verifying system so i have high hopes

@Boris_yo Dude sitting on his porche driving around a toy that costs as much as my car :-) did you see the battery pack? how much more could be done (again) with some amazing nuclear batteries (new amasing battery tech that actually makes it out of the lab).

@Psycogeek Block Level 3? Crushed by tsunami in China? Now you have to give mainstream news a look sometimes.

THere have been hundreds of claims that new battery tech would be 30-100 times where we are at today. These hype battery statements always get huge responce, but literally a full 10 Yeats after making many such claims of new battery tech, we still do not have one of these miracle batts, even for testing

@Boris_yo $300 for $30 in parts it better work :-) or i assume you could get your money back. Just wait for the reviews. when people plunk down that kind of money they are unforgiving in reviews.
