12:23 AM
Just installed Android 5.0 onto my 2012 Nexus 7—the tablet feels like new again!

@DragonLord Still waiting for the OTA for my Nexus 5.

12:41 AM
@MichaelFrank Everything just seems to run faster now—ART is vastly more efficient
Memory use is way down as well

@DragonLord I was going to give it a go while watching this DoTA2 stream... but my computer is insisting that my phone is actually an Acer ADB device... -_-

12:54 AM
@DragonLord That looks sweet!

1:19 AM
gah.... adb doesn't see my device.

I had to go into Device Manager and manually select the driver for the device
Be sure to choose the Google ADB USB driver (I forgot the exact name, but I do know it's under Android Devices)

1:38 AM
Hmm... can't see the Google ADB driver.
@DragonLord that link you posted mentions flash [bootloader image].img, but there are multiple bootloader image files here, which one do I choose? :P

1:57 AM
nevermind, got a different official image that included a flashing batch file.
@DragonLord wow, I LOVE that they haven't used that black/grey set up theme this time.

#AndroidLollipop on the 2012 Nexus 7—the venerable tablet is now as good as new https://www.flickr.com/photos/57993471@N06/15792617792/

so now android has windows? and windows has metro , what a crazy mixed up world.

Memory usage is way down
The system used to take up half the RAM
Now it's more like 30%
ART is that much more efficient

but all fresh installs "use less msmory" till you get all your programs running, and leaking out the side ?

3:48 AM
fsahin.github.io/artist-explorer this seems super neat

1 hour later…
5:16 AM
#AndroidLollipop battery saver really works—on my Nexus 7, the system tries not to use more than two CPU cores and disables many animations

1 hour later…
6:20 AM

SQUIRREL!
Well guinea pig ;p
Table flip!

@allquixotic I have Guinea Pigs! :D

Always wanted to keep a mouse as a pet—adorable little rodents
They're supposed to be pretty easy to take care of
They don't live very long, though

6:51 AM
Tribbles

7:12 AM
@DragonLord that's why I like cats. if you have cats back to back (not going a long time without them), you might have 5 or 6 in your whole life. possibly less, if you take good care of them or die youngish
so you don't have to deal with the natural life cycle very often

@allquixotic: though, in my experience, unless they overlap, there's a gap.
My parents are unlikely to get another dog

Q: Delete the oldest x Gigabytes of a directory

user1833028I want to be able to delete say, the oldest 7 Gigabytes of a directory. Any method will be appreciated! Normally, I'd try for a long time on something like this, but my day job is in 3 hours and it's security related. Give me something that works, and I'll try to turn it into a (more) general...

10:38 AM
aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/9676/… rofl at the comments to the main question

Give me the codez?
@MichaelFrank Commented with just enough rope to get the OP frustrated.

11:15 AM
@Hennes: funny thing is that's exactly how I'd have done that. ;p

You would have asked a 'gimme ze codez' on Super User? ;-)

Naw, listed files by age, added size, deleted ;p

As long as it does not include 'ls -lart' all is fine. (Never realy on the ls output format).
Also I pondered a -print0 rather than -print

Q: Coudn`t find linksys wrt54g version-6 firmware

BipsMy uncle brought me a Linksys wrt54g without any software cd.my version is 6.so i browsed linksys website for version 6 firmware but there is no linksys wrt54g version-6 firmware.what can i do?

That's a pretty shitty router despite the lineage.
Its a crippled vxworks varient

@JourneymanGeek If i was asking the question, i would want to know that, even if it was off topic and uncalled for , even if i didnt like to hear it :-)

lol
You don't really need to do anything. It should just work if its plugged in. Its been a while, but I believe your router should have the ip address 192.168.1.1 if its working - plug in power, plug a computer into a port, go to that ip address and poke around. That said, the WRT54G is a pretty old router, and you've gotten a later, slightly crippled model with less ram than the original, which is worth knowing. — Journeyman Geek ♦ 1 min ago
Question seems too broad.

Plug into one of the four LAN ports and not the fifth which is on a different VLAN and intended as WAN usage ?

ugh. Yeah

11:45 AM
At least, I think that is the setup with my 54GL's

Its the same
just half the ram, and vxworks rather than linux
I do believe that there's much better options, routerwise these days tho

Q: Which pins to mod on Intel Celeron E3300?

nosilleI have an Intel Celeron E3300 core duo at 2.50 GHz and 800 FSB. I want to up it to 3.33 GHz and 1066 FSB. Motherboard is ECS G31t-M7 and supports it. Here's a picture of my actual CPU:

this is a thing again?
ahh, older processor. s/is again/was a thing

What's the second image? — Journeyman Geek ♦ 7 mins ago
@JourneymanGeek ^ looks like just post-mod specs

I figured ;p
Its TINY and impossible to read tho

BobInspired by a meta question, here's a script that makes every image in a post also open itself at full size in a new window/tab when clicked. It will ignore any images already manually linked. Looks good, until:
> Dual Speakers Beats Audio™

Bob
Hm.
It's a Broadwell-Y. Should beat Bay Trail.
Not sure how it measures up to a Haswell i3 Surface Pro 3 though. About the same price.
Nice amount of RAM.

@Bob the fact that it's Broadwell, in and of itself, makes me look upon that much more favorably than most of the junk you've been linking of late :)
I hate the appearance of the speakers though, and
> Beats

Bob
@allquixotic Hey, I've been looking at $200-$300 stuff. This one's >$1000

Bob
2:52 PM
Not gonna buy it. Just found it interesting.

Though, you could probably just decide all laptop sound sucks ;p

Bob
Well, pretty much all laptop speakers suck.

(My thinkpad has a noticably worse sound codec chip than even the standard realteks)

Bob
But Beats crap messes with the headphones too.
Usually headphones are at least alright.

Bob
2:53 PM
@allquixotic Looks like it'd feel weird to hold too.
Oh, 13.3". That'd make an interesting tablet.

(I use an external sound card for headphones)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I find myself only using it for extended listening. Otherwise it's a bit annoying to set it up/have it hanging there.

Bob
That price tag, though...
Might as well pick up some BT headphones like @allquixotic
Though I guess if you can tell the difference in quality :P

@Bob I would highly recommend it, as long as you don't plan on using it with an Android 4.4.x device

2:57 PM
@Bob: Did say debating ;p

Bob
@allquixotic More likely to have trouble on my desktop.
Just waiting for Win10 so I can reinstall.
There's something seriously wrong with the driver setup at the moment.

@Bob honestly? if you have good cans, and a BT 4.x setup with apt-X, and your music is the psychoacoustic quality of about 256 Kbps CBR MP3 or better (not saying it has to be 256 Kbps, if you're using a newer/better codec that's more efficient), you can't really notice the difference in quality
I can't hear any artifacts or reduction in dynamic range or anything with apt-X.
the non-aptX codec of Bluetooth standard is horrid though
so DON'T use that

Bob
@allquixotic My hearing isn't that great anyway. I suppose that saves me a lot on headphones :P

then you definitely wouldn't notice anything with apt-X
but even my mutant ears can hear the loss in the default codec (SBC? I forget the name)

2:59 PM
it comes in the form of dynamic range compression
much of the treble is lost
@Bob at least dick smith isn't nearly as overpriced as Best Buy
this mostly comparable device is twice as expensive
nvm... Core i7
but still, same RAM and SSD
but that's an Ivy Bridge i7

Bob
@allquixotic They usually are. This is a sale of sorts.
Was $1399 recently.

ahh
I'm still committed to buying a Surface Pro 4 when it comes out, unless they completely ruin it somehow
not even tempted by anything else in the interim

Bob
@allquixotic I want to too, but at this point I'm really hoping for Skylake and Iris Pro.
Probably end up Broadwell though.

Broadwell would be fine

Bob
(Skylake is planned for late next year)

3:02 PM
that would be an upgrade from Ivy to Broadwell for me
skipping Haswell.... good enough to justify an up

Bob
Eh, I'll have about 3 months for you to tell me if it's worth it :D

yeah, I'm probably going to buy mine within 1 month of the release date, and I'll likely get the top end model
will be sure to let you know how it goes

Bob
thanks

all ready for Nov 18th

3:08 PM
> 5400 rpm
!!no

Bob
@allquixotic Games in that list I've played: RA3, ME, BF3

Bob
I have a couple more, but never got around to them :P

@Bob while Origin does not seem to wreak havoc on my system like others claim it does to theirs, I try to minimize my purchases from it, except for exclusives.
I much prefer Steam for obvious reasons

Bob
@allquixotic Then... why do you have RA3 and ME from it? o.O

3:10 PM
@Bob do you mean Mass Effect or Mirror's Edge?

Bob
@allquixotic The latter.

I think I got RA3 and Mirror's Edge as part of a very inexpensive sale bundle
in fact, most of the games in that collection except for Mass Effect 2 and 3 and SW:TOR are from that bundle

Bob
Same. But on Steam.

I've never even installed Medal of Honor, Dead Space 3, Burnout Paradise, Dead Space, or Populous

same as me ;p

3:12 PM
I played C&C 4 and RA3 (a decent amount; moreso RA3 than C&C4), tried Battlefield 3 for about an hour, played the hell out of the Mass Effect trilogy; and I've got several hundred hours logged in SW:TOR

(I tend to have origin for the freebies)

and I got Crusader: No Remorse for free

crusader is a blast

there was a popup that said "click here to get Crusader: No Remorse for free!"
yeah, I remember playing it as a little kid

I got it from GOG

3:13 PM
oh, I played all the way through Dragon Age II also but I didn't really enjoy it nearly as much as Dragon Age: Origins

Bob
I've given up on Skyrim :(

XD. One of my friends 'borrowed' my disk (and we'd gotten it as one of those super cheap, super market cds)

Bob
Fullscreen is buggy. Windowed makes controls shoddy as hell.

@Bob I still have an extensively modded Skyrim installed with all kinds of weird addons

I'll likely pick up skyrim again once I'm done with mordor ;p

3:14 PM
I beat the mainline story, so now I'm just running around using Force Lightning on people and hacking them to bits with a two-handed red lightsaber
I enjoy thinning out towns' populations

Bob
I should play Portal sometime.

"there's a psychopath on the loose!"
my favorite thing is killing people without getting caught by the guards though.
like poisoning them while they sleep :D

Bob
Tried it once many years ago, before I really got into FPS games. The first-person perspective was confusing. And then while tumbling through portals... bleh.
It'll probably go better now :P

red light saber.. skyrim?

3:15 PM
yup
Magicka Sabers

lol
playing vanilla myself.

I have like 34 mods

I just have all the expansion packs ;p

You guys on a Skyrim binge ?

3:18 PM
I guess that's a cat sith....

not me

@HackToHell: not at the moment

have a copy of it ;p

@allquixotic That's bloody awesome

The Cat Sìth (Scottish Gaelic: [kʰaht̪ ˈʃiː]) or Cat Sidhe (Irish: [kat̪ˠ ˈʃiː], Cat Sí in new orthography) is a fairy creature from Celtic mythology, said to resemble a large black cat with a white spot on its breast. Legend has it that the spectral cat haunts the Scottish Highlands. The legends surrounding this creature are more common in Scottish folklore, but a few occur in Irish. Some common folklore suggested that the Cat Sìth was not a fairy, but a witch that could transform into a cat nine times. As proposed by British cryptozoologist, Karl Shuker, in his book Mystery Cats of the World...

Bob
@HackToHell What updates? I installed fresh off Steam.

In Tom & Jerry cartoon I saw episodes where something caused souls of Tom to be pulled outside of body and each soul had its number. So the last 13th or 15th I think always did something to make Tom aware thus returning all souls back.

Do you know what this meant?

Anyone experiences Dropbox self-uninstall for no reason every couple of months?

5:50 PM
Nope. I never installed it.
Does it happen during some sort of automatic updates?

6:45 PM
@Boris_yo what Hennes said, what if it was doing a "proper" update, where the original is fully removed first, not just turned off, but then the install itself fails after? One way to stop insanity is to stop the insanity :-) Disable the updater, or update service or update program, and see if the same thing happens. Then remember that any security updates wont occur.

A: What sites should have hyperlinking (onebox) support in chat?

DragonLord the FieryVine Chat seriously needs to support oneboxing for Vine microvideos. It's the perfect extension to the existing animated GIF support.

Bob
@DragonLord I'd rather see generic mp4/webm support.

@Bob ...but where would you upload such videos? Vine fills a gap between animated GIFs and YouTube videos.

7:11 PM
Hmm... the title bar buttons on all SE sites are missing. :S

@Psycogeek You can't disable auto-updater in Dropbox.
@Hennes Happens randomly. 5 minutes ago it was in system tray and now it is gone.
This time no BSOD appeared followed by forced restart.

7:24 PM
@Boris_yo I can disable everything else :-) but i dont use dropbox. there are many ways though. Trace the entire install, and you can see everything that is there , that is a first help to know what they are doing. when all else fails certian protocols or ports can be firewalled out.
It would be rare for them to use 100% all the same methods and servers and protocols and ports to do a program update. but if anything did mix all that up into one, it would be something like cloud stuff.

@Psycogeek Yeah, firewalled so Dropbox cannot receive inbound and outbound data. Much use.

@Boris_yo So it's just a regular folder now?

@Psycogeek Why?
@MichaelFrank The one that had Dropbox icon in Explorer? Yes and then I installed it again and icon returned and it became connected with Dropbox.

@Boris_yo why? because they are the iluminatte :-) just because it is all based on the web, so controlling everything via the web is more likely, and the future of the user loosing more control.

7:33 PM
@Psycogeek IlluminatE? French!

Sure in america they are just The Lights :-)

@Psycogeek Moving lights in the sky? You have those above your roof recently?

@Boris_yo all the time, i call them UFOs because i cannot identify them , but i am sure they are some man made garbage.

@Psycogeek China made or man made?
You know why Russian garbage is better than Chinese? You can always fix it with a few punches and kicks.

@Boris_yo if they were china made, i would expect to find some of them on the ground :-) just like if they were alien, a person might expect that in 10,000 years some of it might be found on the ground. . . and being used to make intel processors.
If they are iluminaughty though, they have the men-in-black come and clean it all up, then make us all forget with super Wi-Fi microwaves.

7:50 PM

@MichaelFrank Blanka WINS!
@Psycogeek Illuminaughty :D Hahaha
@Psycogeek Maybe you know the solution?

Q: Why is Signature Displayed Inside White Rectangle in Adobe Document After Printing?

Boris_yoI am using latest Adobe Reader XI and after appying signature and printing .PDF document, I get signature displayed inside white rectangle and it covers what should be not covered. It looks as if signature was merely copied and pasted like this: You see it covers background text as well as lin...

8:23 PM
Is there a CLI that runs on Linux ?

@Boris_yo I dont do PDFs very often, and dont even use Sigs. but if it was a word processor, it would be the "float" and "wrap" set of settings?
In word processing, you can purposfully "float" text pictures or even links, anywhere on the page. then even after defloating it (not a real word) , you have all sorts of Wrap settings for how text wraps around it which can include the text ignoring the element, and not wrapping to anything.
