Dammit, I always miss out on all the fun, now that the Smoke Detector is there. Ruining my life.
SmokeDetector is the worst
such a life ruiner
I know.
@Cerberus Do you think you'll get over it?
5:20 PM
Maybe if I get my G2.
oh dear. what will become of you?
@Cerberus I hope that happens then
A hellish cur.
So do I!!
It will happen if I push the button...
How is your mother board?
My mother? She's fine.
Hah! You fell for it.
Is she still sabotaging your every effort?
I haven't tried the motherboard again, yet
5:23 PM
Have you tried crushing it?
I'm looking after Oxhack this evening, so I'll probably try it next week, unless I get time this weekend
Looking after?
Well, there are only 7 keys, so to allow members to come and use it, there needs to be a keyholder present
I've volunteered for keyholding on Friday nghts
it's a hackspace
5:25 PM
Not sure I understand...I was under the impression it was a periodical event where people come together to tinker with computer stuff?
no, it's a place where people come to be creative
a hackathon is a periodic event
there's one in Amsterdam
Ohh I get it now.
a hackspace, that is
5:26 PM
Physical keys, to lock the place!
maybe more than one. Amsterdam is bigger than Oxford
@Cerberus yes! :D
At least it has a Latin name.
But...it's so far away!
how many km?
5:29 PM
you have an almost functional bike
I do.
you can get down there, fix it, and then cycle home
well, probably, if you were a member
and you knew how to fix a bike
or knew someone who knew
5:30 PM
I'm afraid that's (0 ^ 0) v 0 = 0.
owl vs frog?
(false and false) or false = false.
And that's not a frog, it doesn't even look like a frog! It is an axolotl.
oh! sorry, I can see it now
in computing ^ = xor
5:33 PM
In logic, ^ is "and". But it has to be on the line.
sometimes ^ = to the power of
it can be confusing
∧ is and.
Very much so.
Sometimes, ** is power.
it depends on context
As do we all.
5:36 PM
so say we all
So we do.
I want an axolotl ^ an LG G2.
why not use &
@Cerberus well, write them on your christmas list and send it to santa claus
@skullpatrol That is just not done in logic.
@MattЭллен We only get presents on Saint Nicholas' Day.
Or is it Eve?
It is Eve.
St. Nicholas is Santa Claus, though, I thought
5:42 PM
@MattЭллен No, they are not the same.
Who is santa claus?
@MattЭллен In Dutch?
@ProgramFOX no. in general. Who is Saint Claus?
"Saint Claus"? Are you mixing them up now?
santa == saint in spanish
5:46 PM
Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle and simply "Santa", is a figure with legendary, historical and folkloric origins who, in many Western cultures, is said to bring gifts to the homes of the good children on 24 December, the night before Christmas Day. However, in some European countries children receive their presents on St. Nicholas' Day, 6 December. The modern figure of Santa Claus is derived from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, whose name is a dialectal pronunciation of Saint Nicholas, the historical Greek bishop and gift-giver of Myra. During the ...
@skullpatrol thanks. I thought as much
Weird, Wikipedia says "Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas", but in Belgium and the Netherlands, they are different persons.
Saint Nicholas (Greek: Ἅγιος Νικόλαος, Hagios Nikólaos, Latin: Sanctus Nicolaus); (15 March 270 – 6 December 343), also called Nikolaos of Myra, was a historic 4th-century Christian saint and Greek Bishop of Myra (Demre, part of modern-day Turkey) in Lycia. Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker (Νικόλαος ὁ Θαυματουργός, Nikolaos ho Thaumaturgos). He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus, whose modern name comes from...

@medica Since everybody is guessing about everybody else's motives, I'll do the same. I think all the upvoters in Lightness's favor and downvoters against Roaring Fish are similar to Lightness, lurkers and low frequency visitors. Commentary in an answer here gives needed nuance.
RF could have rounded out his answer with a concluding remark to better expose the relevance.
6:45 PM
@MattЭллен Saint Nicholas' Day is the 6th if December.
His name is also written informally in Dutch as Sinterklaas.
Some Dutch emigrants in the New World somehow started to conflate Saint Nicholas with Christmas, and they celebrated his day at Christmas. Who knows why?
So write your sinterklaas list and send it to the north pole!
Sinterklaas lives in Spain!
no no no. he lives in lapland
No, no.
@Cerberus He's retired?
6:48 PM
You are buying into the New World's Coca-Cola commercials.
@Cerberus What? He drinks soda with the polar bears?
I know you think he does, impressionable as your people are.
@Cerberus Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus are conflated. They're waiting to be approved for an operation.
No, there is no Santa Claus.
How old are you??
@Cerberus My people? I know what you're thinking and it doesn't sound good.
6:50 PM
There is only one Saint Nicholas, and his day is the 6th.
Every day is St. Nick day.
@Mitch You natives of the New World.
Were too easily impressed with the ramblings of Dutch settlers.
@Cerberus Oooh. I knew it. You're implicitly epitheticizing us "<-4GMT" er's
Which is why you celebrate Saint Nicholas at Christmas.
@Mitch Now that is a nice euphemism.
6:52 PM
@Cerberus And they rambled quite a bit.
As they always do.
@Cerberus I think it leaves out the Brazilians and maybe Newfoundland. So I think they're safe.
You shouldn't have attempted to understand their guttural screechings.
@Mitch Hmm you think so?
@Cerberus I know! They need some cough syrup.
Or learn a proper language.
6:54 PM
@Cerberus Look man, I'm not looking at a time zone chart.
Neither am I.
@Cerberus I did not say that...you did.
Why investigate when you can speculate?
Forget speculation when you can make shit up.
Why make shit up when you can...
tsk tsk
6:55 PM
...shit make up?
7:07 PM
@Cerberus defecatory cosmetics
@Mitch Quite.
to be honest, I prefer the post after LRiO's edit
@Mitch Boy, what a mess.
@MattЭллен So do I, but it wasn't for someone else to change it.
what does lightness races in orbit mean?
7:20 PM
could be poetic
@Cerberus people should feel free to improve posts.
@MattЭллен But not radically alter...
Nor remove most of.
@Cerberus sure, why not?
@Cerberus definitely if it's irrelevant
SE policy.
7:25 PM
SE Policy?
SE Policy!
SE frickin' policy?
hi @Mari-LouA
can't talk
i'm on phone
No talking on cell phones while ELU chatting.
7:36 PM
That^ is
5 mins ago, by skullpatrol
@JohanLarsson sweet
not a pecker but maybe a pecker is just outside the pic?
Can I talk to a mod?
@Mari-LouA You should ping @matt
7:47 PM
ping Matt?
I don't want to write up a post
@MattЭллен can I have a word with you?
Thanks @JasperLoy
@Robusto Not even when it's a G2?
Should I go to a different room? What's the praxis?
@Mari-LouA what's up?
Ok, now is what I'm about to ask public?
I just want to have a private word
7:51 PM
ok, I can set up a room. two ticks...
we don't bite
I'm sure nobody does, @skullpatrol
I'm just tired
@Cerberus That is correct.
(from other matters)
np :-)
7:53 PM
@Mari-LouA have you received and invite?
Ahh, it's above the page
@Robusto But the G2 is the holy grail!
Not if you have a G3.
The G3 is uglier, has a worse screen, worse battery life...
And it is more unwieldy.
Faster processor, more memory, swappable battery . . .
7:58 PM
Well, how would you really notice the difference, in practice?
Does yours ever lag?
All phones lag. Hard to tell what causes it. We don't expect it to run like a desktop.
Well said^
Many desktops work like phones these days.
Fair enough.
Desktops lag too...
Usually not the whole system, but just some application, the browser...
@Cerberus Not mine. I built it not to lag. ^)^
8:02 PM
Is ^)^ your own emoticon?
I dunno. I tried to type ^_^ once and it came out ^)^, which looks a little more interesting, so I use it.
@Robusto I'm sure a dozen or two virtual machines can bring it down.
Or 50 browser extensions.
One of the reasons I don't run those things.
My emoticon is lol.
8:07 PM
8:21 PM
Today I talked to another friend about the secret project @matt.
8:32 PM
Ooh. What's the secret??
@JasperLoy good.
@Mitch Tell me!
What? No! You tell me!
I couldn't.
Or you would know.
I wouldn't let it go past here.
8:37 PM
It is something to help certain people in my country, but it might be illegal, so I have not done anything.
I will need to find out the exact legal details before executing my plan.
If you're giving away free money, I'm there.
me too, me too...
However, today my friend said that if I were to do this in some other countries, say the Muslim countries, I might be executed before executing my plan.
Count us all in!
Oh.. It's a free colonoscopy?
Free prostate examination, lol.
8:39 PM
clears throat
@Mitch Here = the Googlable Internet?
Or did you mean Nokia's Here Maps?
They have maps of the entire world.
Option A
I figure we have control over that. We'll tell people 'here' don't spread it around.
@JasperLoy Many Muslim countries are rather barbaric, a lot worse than your country.
And people will follow that
I have a map of the entire world, in 3D: .
It's very very small, though
8:41 PM
@Mitch What shall we tell our Googlers?
@MattЭллен How many atoms wide?
"Don't spread gossip"
@Cerberus enough for that one pixel
People are pretty responsible.
@MattЭллен What colour is it?
@Mitch Hmm you are probably right.
A one pixel map of the entire earth? Very compact!
I sit on lots of colors.
8:43 PM
He is a moderator.
You know what they're capable of.
@Mitch You ≠ I.
@Cerberus black
all the lights are off and the sun has set
Note that the compact OED has less words than the OALD, so never get the former or smaller ones.
They're better words. Quality over quantity
My dictionary will have just one word: 'huh'
You can use it with a lot of nuance.
Also, it' s almost the same word in every language
Also, do not visit OUP website to get a list of all its dictionaries. They are not listed properly, lol. That site is terrible.
Sometimes I'll use "you don't say." For a little commentary. And some profanity for stubbing my toe. But that'll all be non standard.
@JasperLoy where is OED located physically? Cambridge?
8:49 PM
@MattЭллен What if you're too far away from the earth for the sun to set?
OED > Shorter OED > ODE > Concise OED > OALD > Compact OED in number of words.
@Mitch No idea.
@Mitch How dare you!!
I really had a brain blow out. I forgot that it stands for Oxford English Dictionary. Duh. If only I had planned that, it would have been funny
@Cerberus well, I've only modelled the Earth, so there is no sun
Then how can it set?
8:53 PM
Obviously it just sits around
@Mitch Haha, you were serious?
it can't. I was being poetical
That's nice.
So is this
I'm not clicking that link
9:01 PM
it is math
Augh!!!! I clicked that link!!!!
My eyes are burning!!!
differential equations does that sometimes
9:17 PM
@Mitch What are you saying, I can't read it, because my eyes have burned out!
@skullpatrol Nice.
what did you draw?
A random shape.
a diq
What's that?
pecker :)
9:33 PM
Oh, I get it.
