@TimB congrats on your 3K!

@Liath Thanks, I hit it sometime yesterday I think.

visits per day is climbing
I think that counts non-stack-exchange people
i.e. stuff coming in from google
right, awarded bounty on first question, going to put one on the second soon

A: Creating a realistic world map - Landmass formation

ivy_lynxWhile bowlturner's answer provides a list of processes to work with, I think that, since this is about worldbuilding, there should be some technique in applying all of these possibilities in a practical way. Practical means, since we're not talking about software explicitly here, possible to do ...

I think that answer deserves more upvotes though :)

I agree

It was quite interesting.

Q: Copying the questions (or claims) from this site to science SE sites?

DVKIn many cases, a good answer to the worldbuilding question would result from a good Q&A on a real scientific site (e.g. What efficiencies make a realistic food chain? on Biology.SE) Do we have a policy on doing just that (e.g. taking Worldbuilding question, and rewording it to be a real SE quest...

Hmm. I can't ask anywhere else, so let's just put this here and hope he sees it.
Bobson, are you the same Bob Bobson from PARPG?
I imagine there are lots of Bobsons, but generally we find a username and stick to it
So it seemed worthwhile to check
hmm. @Bobson

5:32 PM
Hmm?
Probably not.
I usually go with Bobsson, since the single-s version is often taken.
@RowanKallioBaker-Whittaker After googling it, no, definitely not. Sorry.

ah, much woe, thanks for replying though :D

Did anyone else experience a recent downvote?

not me

nor me

8:36 PM
just asking because someone did a serial downvote of this so I was wondering if we have a troll on board.

Maybe because of the subject matter?
I haven't got any down votes recently.

Maybe someone knows of such a planet and is trying to cover up its existence.

meh - at least it doesn't seem to be a spree - no point in asking for a reason after something like that

@ivy_lynx when you say "serial", do you mean several downvotes?
@ivy_lynx just had a look - I see what you mean. A downvote on every answer (but not the question, which leaves me at a loss for motive).

8:54 PM
Alrighty, take a look and let me know if you think we can reopen this guy. worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/527/…

@githubphagocyte Maybe someone is about to answer and wants to boost their answer?

@Vulcronos yeah that seems likely
it'll be easy to tell

I hope so
That reminds me to take a look at my water fantasy race question

@James dude one question floats in my head when I read your question still: Why isn't this better for history.se

I mad some edits but not sure if they are enough to reopen.

8:56 PM
@Vulcronos I thought that was reopened

Hmm, it's a much more specific question now
I think that's specific enough to re-open, it will need to lose the crossing out tho

@TimB yeah but it feels like its out of scope now lol

just because it's also in scope at another site doesn't mean it's out of scope here

I don't have a problem with reopening it really, there's others that are worse in terms of how broad or out of scope they are, just stating I'm unsure
One thing I did have a problem with was the "de-evolution" definition, which seems to be resolved now
@James I think I can rephrase the question better but perhaps it has to be asked again - does "How can the rise and fall of civilizations be modeled in an imaginary world" express the spirit of your original question?

we're getting some really good answers from new users today

A: Can a river be put under enough pressure to jet straight up for a mile?

guildsbountyHere is a bit of math showing what you are up against. we are ignoring wind resistance. If we want to see how fast that water has to be moving to reach 1 mile in height, we pull out the following equation... SQRT(-2ad+finalV) = initialV Plug in the values for acceleration of gravity, final ve...

9:05 PM
@Vulcronos it will be interesting to see...

@TimB yeah the weekend was dead but we got a ton of activity today

Weekend was really slow
@githubphagocyte Are you talking about my question?

I struggled to make the cap xD

A: What efficiencies make a realistic food chain?

Ilmari KaronenThe 10% conversion efficiency mentioned in other answers is a decent rule of thumb — there's a lot of variation in the real world, but if you assume that the total prey biomass equals somewhere around 10 times the total predator biomass, you'll get a fairly plausible-looking food chain. Tim B ma...

@Vulcronos There's a little arrow at the front of my comment to show which comment of yours I was replying to (since my reply was a bit delayed...). I meant it will be interesting to see if the downvoter posts an answer that doesn't get downvoted...

A: What kind of star should I use for my world?

Mike L.The concept you should look into is popularly known as The Goldilocks Zone. What it boils down to (no pun intended) is a formula that tells you what is the possible range of orbital radii where liquid water can naturally occur, and thus a planet where water is present can support life. You can fi...

@githubphagocyte Ah. Very true. I didn't know that about the arrows. Thanks for letting me know.

@Vulcronos I've been using them a lot since I discovered them - there's a similar arrow to the right of each comment which allows you to link to that post from yours, and automatically mentions the person with an @
It's really handy if there are several conversations going on at once...

I've not made the cap for a few days
every question I looked at already had a good answer
+I've spent 100 in bounties :)

10:17 PM
Is there any way to make an image smaller?

@ivy_lynx have you tried taking a few steps back?
But seriously, do you mean before posting to stack exchange?

@githubphagocyte xD +1
@githubphagocyte no I mean in a post

Stack exchange will automatically convert to a jpg less than 500KB if you post an image more than that

yeah but it won't resize it

If you just want to scale it to a smaller image I don't think you can do it in-site

10:19 PM
aw man

I generally use GIMP

of course - GIMP is da man - that's how I made my new avatar :P
GIMP is the image manipulation utility of choice

But most basic pixel manipulators will do it. Paint can do it if you don't want antialiasing

I'm on debian 7 on a netbook :P

yes GIMP is where my avatar came from too

10:21 PM
that's the Logo turtle right?

indeed - that one's from the python turtle module

ha xD I'm surprised I actually got that right

I used GIMP to scale a GIF for the answer that image comes from

maybe I can convince graphicsmagick to do it instead, GIMP won't be happy with the memory left

Are we talking a huge image here?

10:25 PM
Nah, just jarring the way it's placed - here's the post: worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/a/1161/253
some of the pics are way too big, but i'll have to tackle this later

GIMP should handle any of them with ease - even if your netbook has low RAM it can work around that. The GIF files I resized were huge due to having a ludicrous number of frames and although it took a few minutes it didn't crash.
(the individual images were also all considerably larger than any of the images in the post you linked)

yeah it can handle it alright - I just don't want to wait for swapping :P

@ivy_lynx and I thought I wrote long answers... When it needs to be long it helps to break it up with a few titles so you don't scare off your potential upvoters... :)

@githubphagocyte I was just doing that :P
@githubphagocyte I planned it but forgot before pasting

11:03 PM
....damn @ivy_lynx...you don't mess around :)

@TimB xD

I think it won't be long till you top the rep list

I am already at the top month and week lists
though, it's only thanks to you that I rose this fast today - you took my cap to 265 :P
Your question has been kicking my ass though - erosion is so much harder than just forming landmasses

:)
just had one good answer on that one actually, reading it now
