Q: candy crush level 210 clearing licorice

ninaI understand you have to get two candy bombs together. When I do this they only clear the right side, and not the licorice on the left side. what am I doing wrong.

@Wipqozn Whenever I finally get an SSD, I want to only use an SSD.
Maybe an HDD for backups.

o/

@OrigamiRobot 99% of the data your computer reads is program and system files. For the rest an HDD is perfectly adequate.

@Wipqozn Get the bigger one. They aren't that much more expensive than the smaller ones.

1:12 PM
In particular, if you take most of the brunt off the HDD, that means the remaining 1% of requests that does go there can be served immediately.
Pictured: a happy HDD.

then why is it all D:

@MattЭллен It just puts up a show for me.

@Wipqozn If you want to install games on it 256GB. The smaller ones are also much more expensive per gigabyte than the larger variants, and there are performance differences as well. Something like the MX100 256GB is pretty cheap now, 90-100 EUR here

It's pretty lazy.

1:14 PM
On the other hand C: is genuinely happy :P

Perhaps the only slightly disappointing thing is that an SSD didn't cut down on loading times for TF2
that said, since my HDD isn't burdened, I can still load TF2 maps from it faster than most.
Also I give up on Skyrim's loading tooltips.
Fact: a computer program will expand until there is no more memory available, no matter how much memory you give it to start with

While we are at SSDs - does anyone know if the SSDs from Transcend are any good? They seems to be on sale on amazon quite frequently.

I use my HDD so little it has to spin back up to speed when I try to access it...

I have listened to all you have said, and I'm strongly considering just going for a 256B one.

1:21 PM
@Wipqozn 256 bytes? Hardcore.

@badp How does a single instance of Chrome use that much memory?

@3ventic That sound is glorious.

@badp Yeah, G are for losers.

@PrivatePansy One was chat; another the "GPU process"

@badp Chrome is pretty good at wasting money, especially if you rund it really long. I usually don't notice just how much it uses as I have 16GB, but I did catch it using 3-5 GB a few times

1:22 PM
@badp Memory leak. Ah glorious memory leak

The third is Feedly.

@MadScientist Firefox and Chrome are both really bad for memory leaks.

@5pike No idea, the current budget favorite is generally the Crucial MX100

Restarting those three processes got me from 14 GB of committed memory to 6.7 GB

@MadScientist Yeah, but those are not on sale as often as the Transcend ones are.

1:23 PM
I also restart Chrome only every few weeks, so it has plenty of time to leak memory

Yay. Access loves to give exclusive access to the database without actually informing you of such. Stupid program.

@MadScientist Usually when there's an update
@Frank Why is Access even a thing that exists to begin with :(

@badp Because Microsoft.

40 minutes of footage recorded at 19x10 http://t.co/zJdI26nc0N
oh ster
> @Niichts how large is it? 5kb?
> @_StashCat Still 2gb

@badp Was one of them Flash?

1:25 PM
@badp How does one even manage to do this...

@Powerlord Surprisingly not: I have Flash set on click to load.

Oh wait, no.

@badp Because apparently there's a demand for a database product that's between Excel and MySQL on the user-friendliness - power axis

@PrivatePansy Oh yeah: sqlite

Anyway, for the last few versions of Chrome (and was finally fixed in the latest version), Flash wouldn't be unloaded when you closed its tab. You'd have to close the entire browser to reclaim its memory.

1:26 PM
@badp You can't create reports and forms by dragging and dropping in sqlite

And if you run something in Flash for hours (say, a Flash based chat) it can suck up your entire system memory thanks to how well Flash is written.

Indeed I don't have Flash running right now <3
@PrivatePansy Bonus feature!
You get those forms for free with, say, Django anyway.

The benefits of working in a dev office is when someone mentions they're getting a new PC, someone will whip up a build for them.
coworker suggested this. Planning to change the CPU to the 4690 one, since I don't intend to do any overclocking.
He seems to think SSD aren't that good for gaming, since HDD usually isn't the bottleneck. I'll need to look into that one.
I do need to decide if I want 1TB or 2TB. I'll probably go with 2TB.

@badp This is why I can't take Firefox' devs' claims of "We improved the memory consumption! Problems fixed!" claims every other release or so. No, just no. Until your program actually gives up memory it's not using anymore, you didn't fix anything, you're just delaying the inevitable.

I have a 1TB and never use it all.
Not even close.

1:33 PM
@Wipqozn That depends on the game. It can cut down loading times dramatically.

@OrigamiRobot That's my concern. I think I'll just stick with 1TB. With the SSD I'll probably wind up installing and uninstalling games a lot more than I do know anyways.

@Wipqozn The PSU looks excessive, I've also heard not exactly good things about Kingston SSDs, but that was quite a while ago

@MadScientist Okay, good to know.
I know he likes Kingston, at least for his storage.
I think he picked it in part thinking I was going to overclock.

I'm definitely going to go for a slighlty cheaper PSU. Maybe one closer to $80, rather than $110.

1:36 PM
Man, I want to build a PC, but it's not practical for me to have a desktop as a student

@MadScientist Newegg has a 700W PSU on sale today for $54

Not sure how much the GPU uses, but it is a 6pin/8pin one. Shouldn't be more than my 560Ti, and I have only a 430W Seasonic

@Unionhawk I went through all of college with a desktop.

@Unionhawk Don't have the cash for it?

@OrigamiRobot I'd need to still have a laptop for various classes

1:37 PM
@Unionhawk Why?
Those classes sound terrible.
@Wipqozn newegg.com/Product/…-EMC-091614-Index--PowerSupplies-_-17152042-L011‌D

Because I'm in CPE and computer labs aren't a thing anymore?

@Unionhawk They're not?
You don't have engineering labs with CAD and stuff?

@OrigamiRobot They have you install CAD and stuff on your own laptops these days.
There are a couple of computer labs, mostly in the CPS building
but the university expects all students to have a laptop of some description

Man, I've never been more thankful for my schools computer labs.

Why? That sounds terrible.

1:41 PM
My Uni had computer labs as well, although most students still had a laptop. I'm talking stricly about the Comp Sci students.

So I didn't have to buy thousands of dollars in software?

We get it for free?

@OrigamiRobot I always find it amusing how Newegg URLs break chat's URL parser

And so i didn't have to use a laptop.
@PrivatePansy And yet they still work. I wonder why they have so much fluff in their URLs

Hell, I'm downloading Windows 8.1 for free.

1:42 PM
@OrigamiRobot For tracking referrals, probably.

downloads all the software MS currently makes

You can shave any given newegg link to just the ?Item=ASDFGHJKL part, and it'll work

Although... that's not really free if someone else pays for it.

@Powerlord Yes it is.

1:44 PM
@Powerlord All?

@PrivatePansy I have an MSDN Ultimate account.

Q: How can I change the mouse settings?

JutschgeI recently bought Fable Anniversary for PC and I was able to customize the keyboard settings however I couldn't find an option to rebind the mouse keys. I don't like how you need the mouse for blocking and running, since these are essential abilities in the game, and it feels kinda weird to run ...

We have Dreamspark Premium. So, yeah.
It's pretty great

Not sure you'd want to download a bunch of Windows 8.1 SKUs, or every single version of Windows from 3.1 onwards :P
What is the last version of Windows you can get from Microsoft?

@PrivatePansy Well, they strangely pulled a bunch of Win95/98/ME/XP versions from MSDN just recently.

1:46 PM
Oh god.

Yeah, Dreamspark has at the oldest Windows 7 on it. Though I do remember it having XP at a time.

I can get Windows 3.1 for the oldest and 8.1 for newest.
Including like 20 different volume licensed versions.

So, my friends are using a Minecraft launcher so they don't have to bother with managing mods.
I think they've gone a little mod-crazy.

There's literally 8 pages at 10 per page just for Windows 8.1

1:48 PM
I downloaded the pack through the launcher and the first run has been taking quite awhile to get started. 3 minutes and counting.

I have a new mod to try.

@Powerlord Is it showing, like, literally every language, and then every language with update, or something?

@Unionhawk The first page is nothing but English- United Kingdom versions.

What.
How
Oh, right, other versions but professional, possibly?

x86 and x64 are also listed separately.
Also, regular and N editions are listed separately.

Q: Phantom Prospect Requirements, why it does not tally?

TrebeizI have unlock the Phantom Prospect using the password given. I went back to play PS3 Console it says Phantom Prospect already unlock. But when I start getting the kill requirement, it does not count on anything. It remains 0/200. Any help on how or what else needs to be done? Thanks

Which means you get 4 entries per version or so.

Ah.

Interestingly, MSDN shares keys between the Professional VL and Enterprise editions.

Ooooh, the IPHAS DR2 is here (newest star catalogue for our galaxy). 219 million stars with their positions and physical data. That means we're just three orders of magnitude away from getting them all. It took us 160 years to cross the last three orders of magnitude (-> Bonner Durchmusterung), so we should be done by 2200 or so.

@Unionhawk Aren't you able to change the system language post-install anyway?

1:53 PM
@badp Probably.

I'm not sure why you'd get a volume license of Professional seeing as how Enterprise has more group policy controls, but eh.

@Frank replace the sword with a crowbar and it's perfect

Also, not sure what the difference is between "Windows 8.1" and "Windows 8.1 with Update"

@Powerlord Windows 8.1 Update 1 I suppose.

1:55 PM
@3ventic It's an actual Civ 5 mod, too, so I think I'll be trying that out.

@badp If I limit it to that, it shortens the results to 24. Keeping in mind that it's only showing me the results of versions with English or English- United Kingdom as its default.

Hey, I'm not complaining that they're separating it; Dreamspark gives me 1 copy of everything. So theoretically, that's 4 copies of 8.1

@Powerlord Three editions, two bitnesses, N and not-N and what else?

@Unionhawk Nice

Oh, okay, EN-US and EN-UK

1:57 PM
@badp Your edition count is wrong, for one.

Shhh

@badp Do you even math?

@Frank -75% unhappiness seems pretty unbalanced to me

@PrivatePansy 24 is not a multiple of 2 so there has to be a 3 somewhere

@MadScientist Probably. Don't care, as I don't play Civ for balance.

1:58 PM
@MadScientist It looks like a Golden Age bonus
I can't remember if Happiness accrued during a Golden Age counts for the next one

Isn't a golden age a bonus to happiness anyway?

@PrivatePansy If it does, then you basically have an infinite golden age for the glorious PC master race.

4 editions (one of which is multi-edition), 2 bitnesses, N and non-N, and 2 languages. Although that actually comes out too high...
