@digitxp: Now that's an interesting suggestion.
@digitxp: What should we do? Will you edit your answer (and I mark the question as a feature-request)? Or should we create a new feature request that puts this forward so it gets better attention?

7:19 PM
@TomWijsman Probably keeping it in there is a good idea. Who knows, other people may have better suggestions.

hi

@digitxp: Accepted it... 1. Ask them 2. Put a CW answer 3. Request flag if it doesn't work.

@Tom Thanks!

i am currently tweaking a cms to suit my needs. i havent hosted it yet but testing it on my localhost. can anyone suggest a simple version controlling system so i can keep track of the changes i make. I am the only one tweaking the cms so support for multi users is not a problem and i dont wish to open source it now. so is there any simple desktop app
@TomWijsman do u hav any idea about my problem

@lovesh With TortoiseSVN you can create a local file based repository that would work...

7:32 PM
Should I edit the wiki for caps lock in all caps?

@lovesh Any CMS would do. Subversion (SVN) is probably one of the simplest.
And indeed, Mokubai's suggestion makes it handy on Windows.
There are similar GUI front-ends for SVN for other OSes.

SVN? ewww... at least use TortoiseHG or TortoiseGit - they do everything SVN can do and more

@DMA57361: Why ewww?
I would also prefer Git, don't know about HG.

@DMA57361 Yeah, but my workplace settled on SVN for some reason so I got stuck with it...

But Git adds so much that makes it learning curve worse than SVN.

7:35 PM
@TomWijsman HG and Git do almost all the same things... just with different names

HG too.

@TomWijsman really? create repo, do work, commit - repeat

@Tom SVN is a bloated massive behemoth of a VCS that has proven time and again to suck at being awesome and capturing the interest of good programmers and good robots.

Difference between Pull/Push and Update/Commit is confusing if you are new to it.
@digitxp Why exactly is it bloated?

@TomWijsman pull/push is irrelevant for local repos (unless you enjoy cloning...)

7:36 PM
@DMA57361 True, but these are explained while you don't need them.
You really don't need a double layered structure if you work alone.

@TomWijsman i havent used a version controlling system yet so is it too difficult.
i havent worked on a large project yet

@TomWijsman When I checkout I inevitably start playing Angry Birds.

@TomWijsman I disagree, it's really handy to clone something to experiment and then either push or delete the clone depending on how it goes

Myself, I would use Git because I know the differences. But I wouldn't suggest it to someone who is new. TortoiseSVN will do just fine...

@lovesh It certainly changes how you work. Especially git. Staging in specific really helps keep you focused IMO.

7:38 PM
Aye, SVN suits me and my small non-programmer type brain.

@DMA57361 A back-up serves that purpose well enough, I know the usefulness of cloning; but again, those are features you don't really need.

@TomWijsman so if i am ready to spend a few hours understanding how git works should i start with tortoise git

@TomWijsman backing up a version control just in case you make bad changes ... well that seems to defeat the point of the VCS slightly

@digitxp Erm... That's actually a problem with your server then.
@lovesh You could, yes.
@DMA57361 Erm... We're talking about experimenting here.

@DMA57361 i might need to rollback. does svn support this?

7:40 PM
@lovesh:

@lovesh all three do

@TomWijsman so? I don't want to have to restore a backup just because my experiment went wrong

Watch this screencast on Git, it are three parts and surely explain it in a clear way.

@lovesh Yes, with SVN you can easily go into the Repository and revert to specific versions

7:41 PM
@DMA57361 But that's what someone who is new to VCSes will do. ;)

@DMA57361 isn't that what "branches" are for in things like SVN?

@TomWijsman so? that doesn't make it a good idea

@Mokubai Yes, branches fit that purpose.

@Mokubai possibly, but they're more for a dev/qa/release split imo - really that's dependant on team workflow

@DMA57361 Then why did you suggest this idea in the first place? If it doesn't fit non-tech-savy people?

7:42 PM
@TomWijsman I didn't suggest it..?

@DMA57361 Erm... Branches are intended to be used on a feature level.

@TomWijsman Probably, but hating it with a level of rationality means that I never have to learn it and lets me use the time for ranting instead }:-).

@DMA57361 You started about safely experimenting...

@TomWijsman correct - sorry, was thinking of something else >.<
@TomWijsman yeah, I never mentioned backups until you did

Uhh, sorry if I started an SVN vs Git war

7:45 PM
@Mokubai you didn't - me and Tom are HG vs Git ;)

Ahhh

If anyone is interested, The Gaming Moderator Elections are ending in 11 minutes. chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/35/the-suspension-bridge

@DMA57361: I like Git over HG and SVN; my point was that you rather want to put something more simple towards users that are new to it...

although I don't think its a war but more that we're talking past one another

@SimonSheehan: Yeah, got the announcement; I hope one of those I voted for gets to win.

7:46 PM
See, my problem is that I have no idea why one is better than the other, to me it's all like

@TomWijsman but HG and Git aren't that complicated if you use the basic features - and they're better so when you need the better features you can jump straight in without having to re-learn a new process

I've nominated, but dropped myself out in the primaries. I'm wasn't really that active on Gaming anyway...

@TomWijsman Indeed. Good job on trying, by the way :)

@Mokubai Git and HG are almost functionally the same - those two are pretty much the same as far as I can tell

@SimonSheehan: Well, the best thing to it is that the Town Hall Chat made me rethink moderation.

7:47 PM
They're finally cleaning up SVN so one of my pet peeves (obscenely bloated working copies) will hopefully go away soon

@TomWijsman whys that?

And a meta post by Robert on Productivity contained the wise words "Quality over Quantity" (which is why I don't do so much edit floods lately).
@SimonSheehan Well, all those questions are like "what would you do if this happened" and similar.
Like those situations you don't usually handle like a 10k or aren't focused on...

@TomWijsman Ah, yeah. I've been in a lot of moderation positions before, it can be tough.

well i dont know much about Hg but sometime ago Joel Spolsky wrote a tutorial on Hg and i dmire him a lot so if he is going for Hg there might be something to look into Hg

@DMA57361 True, but having those extra features can be seen as bloat to new users as they never use it so it stands in their way. On the other hand, the switch from SVN <--> HG <--> Git is quickly made when necessary...

7:50 PM
@DMA57361 Git allows you to change your history, HG does not.

@TomWijsman SVN has a different usage process to HG/Git thou because it can't clone/push/pull on the fly

Holy crap gaming chat is filling up

@digitxp ah yes, that's the major difference isn't it

I really like the Git screencast (this one I linked before), now I want to use Git for personal projects (university is still SVN focused)

@TomWijsman you get made to use SVN for Uni projects?

7:51 PM
But well, sometimes I'm too lazy to turn up a VCS because I feel I don't need it at that point in the project

I gotta lie down...this is giving me a headache...

ya i m currently downloading those screen casts but they will be done by the morning coz my internet connection sucks

@DMA57361 It's mentioned more than Git, so group members usually want SVN rather than to learn something new.
Our university is also very Linux based...

@TomWijsman huh, well at least you lot have VCS... there's diddly squat at my place
I only use it 'cos I've the sense to want a VCS

@SimonSheehan Yeah, the Town Hall was also pretty busy.

7:53 PM

@DMA57361: Our first years actually manage to do a project using FTP :P
2

:/

in my university 99.9% wont know what is a vcs including faculties
i m in a fifth-world university
anyway thanks for the advice. Ill go for git as it seems its better for the future
thanks again

@lovesh vcs? what's that?

@BloodPhilia Version Control System

7:56 PM
@DMA57361 I know :P
Was meant as sarcasm

ah... you needed at least on smiley to show the sarcasm :P

3 minutes till Gaming moderators get chosen...

lol @BloodPhilia just added a comment at same time as you on that ipad question

OpenSTV is not loading for me, argh!

@lovesh I know someone who works at an Ivy League Library...the librarians barely know what WorldCat is.

7:59 PM
@Mokubai Haha, I see

8:30 PM
@digitxp: Good job on the tag wiki (excerpts), accepted a lot of them already.

@TomWijsman Same here

is the SU site broken for anyone else?

@Mokubai: Nope, still working.

Q: Stop taskeng.exe window from popping up

BlaMI have several processes scheduled in my Windows 7 environment, mainly for backups, that are supposed to run in the background. However instead of just doing it's work quietly in the background, the task scheduler pops up a black (console like) "taskeng.exe" window. The window goes in front of a...

Just works for me...

Aye, was just about to completely clear history/cookies
Yup, that fixed it.

Q: Notify us when one of our posts is edited

cletusYour summary page shows "N Edits to your posts" for the selected time period but you really have to be looking for it. Could we add edits to the notification feed? You could put the reason for the edit (entered--or not--when the editor changes it) and just a link to the post.

@slhck Why did you link him?

@TomWijsman Isn't there something like this in place?
@TomWijsman Because he just got to 10k
thought worth mentioning

@slhck No, been through a whole discussion with @Mehrdad. There isn't...

Oeh! Congrats to @Linker3000 for reaching 10k! May you serve your community well, young padawan.

@slhck: I see, first thought it was related to Wil given he is in UK.
Congrats @Linker3000. :)

10:07 PM
@TomWijsman Yes there is! Back when I asked my first question on SF — someone edited it and I got a message, like this top bar, "You have 1 new edit".

We should get @Sathya to congratulate him too, or else he might not see these... :P

heh yeah

ahhh ... @Linker3000 - Well done!

@TomWijsman Where does it actually show "edits to my posts"?
ahh nvm

@slhck: Just edited something of you, do you get a notification when you go to the front page?
(Of course it will be on top; but, do you get notified?)

10:09 PM
@TomWijsman Nope. It doesn't happen on SU.
But I'm 100% sure I've seen it happen to me on another site.
just recently

@slhck I was also so sure, but it doesn't seem to be that way, it's just weird...

Invited Linker to join us :D

@BloodPhilia: How did you do that? Or did you drop a comment?

opens invisible bottle of champagne

10:10 PM
Go to his chat profile page
and there's a button "invite user to:"

hides the cake
How did you get there, @BloodPhilia?

ah. interesting!

@TomWijsman The cake is a lie anyway

@BloodPhilia: Oh, thanks for pointing that out.
User that hasn't been here before, handy...

@BloodPhilia I refuse to do one of those. Procrastination mode activated...

@TomWijsman Manual breathing activated...

Manual breathing?
If you're new to the idea of breathing, this book makes it easy and fun! You'll wonder how you lived without it.

Anyway, I'm really off now! :D Bye bye

Me too - a short and sweet visit. Cya all tomorrow... Goodnight.

News in.... Steve Jobs has resigned

11:46 PM
morning
@WilliamHilsum: i'm not hugely suprised
"Current after-hours trading data (Bloomberg's live coverage is here) shows the stock plummeting." And this is what's wrong with the world today...
*suspects even if he's resigned, Steve Jobs will be involved in apple as long as he can physically, or they have to throw him out(
