12:00 AM
if i suspected someone was logging me, i'd make sure i type out lots of meaningless gibberish, just for the hell of it
and prolly replace and take apart any suspect devices. WITH PICTURES

12:15 AM
If I suspected someone was logging me, I'd physically disconnect from the network and do a thorough inspection of my computer :P

@nhinkle Thanks! It's clear now how it will be calculated. I wonder if it would be worthwhile fixing all the Answers to allow people to change their votes just in case they interpreted "number of votes" literally? Just a thought, that's all. =)

now i'm curious who has downvotes >_>

@JourneymanGeek You can click the number and it expands it out to the count of upvotes and downvotes separately.

12:49 AM
'Ello, anyone here?
Looking for a webcam recommendation for my Dad. Also, do any webcams have miss built in? (I never had to buy one.)

@Moshe Miss?

@digitxp Huh?
@digitxp Oh, Mic. Whoops, autocorrect in Lion...
Do any webcams have a Mic built in?

@Moshe Almost all webcams have a mic built in.
If you don't feel like looking into any webcams, you can safely grab any recent webcam from Microsoft or Logitech.

@digitxp Well, shows how much I know. So what's a decent Webcam in the $25-$50 range?
Ah, ok, thanks.

@sidran32: i know that. i didn't realise anyone would have downvoted. seems counterproductive to me.

i mean, i upvoted anyone i thought deserved it, and simply didn't vote for people i didn't.

@JourneymanGeek Downvoting is fun.
It's "forbidden fruit" because it lowers your rep.

@digitxp: in this particular case, eh, I think its silly. In normal use, i save downvotes for situations where something is.. obviously harmful

@JourneymanGeek If only everyone abided by that. Ever notice how downvotes almost always come in swarms?

@digitxp: and anonymously. If an answer is 'bad' it helps to say why too.
If answer is really bad, then, an alternative answer too!

1:02 AM
@RandolfRichardson if they downvoted, I'm sure it's not because they really meant to vote for the candidate to win.

@JourneymanGeek Ah.

@nhinkle: precisely.

I'm off for now. See ya.

Anyone around know if SE looks decent on a Kindle?

3:04 AM
@Pearsonartphoto never tried it, personally
does it have a special browser, or is it just black & white but with a typical rendering engine?

Apparently the latest one has a webkit based browser

3:22 AM
I could never read a novel off that, I need real paper :/

3:33 AM
@SimonSheehan: eh, real paper, a cold drink, and a comfortable thing to laze on ;p
but that's what i have been doing the last week ;p

3:57 AM
@Journeyman every afternoon I've been in the backyard doing that :p 15 days of holidays left, I'm not wasting a minute

@JourneymanGeek @simon real paper, backyard, what is this nonsense!

@SimonSheehan agreed...

@studiohack Are you in university now?

@SimonSheehan I wish :P - another semester of school - then university :)

Ah okay :) 2 more years to go here, of high school.

4:07 AM
ah, entering your junior year?

I'm not sure, I don't understand the whole junior/senior/sophomore or whatever thing, we don't use that here. I'm in the 11th grade.

yeah, that would be a junior in the US @SimonSheehan

@studiohack ah okay. Im actually quite excited this year at least. Lots of fun courses

exciting! :) got to finish physics, pre-calc this year... hard

Tough courses :O I don't have any science this year, a bit sad :( But I will the next.

4:26 AM
@Sathya: i'm a .dtf fanboi

4:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek dtf?

5:04 AM
The State Government of Victoria's Department of Treasury and Finance
Journeyman means he is quite a big fan of that particular governmental department

That's just so weird... when I plug my ADSL modem into the ethernet port on my PC - it doesn't work. But when it's connected to my router... it works fine.

5:25 AM
@Sathya @Gareth dead tree format.
AKA paper

yeah. but the treasury stuff was funnier :)
but. but. you're killing the trees! :O :O

@Gareth: their deaths are not in vain!

yay, more tag edits
(not by me, in general. )

Hi everyone

hello

o0
i managed to post something in meta... at the same time i was typing it

How're we this fine morning?

7:52 AM
Goog good, up to anything interesting?

waiting for the dog to wake up and trying to decide if this is spam flaggable or not superuser.com/questions/100582/…
Its obvious he wrote the app, so that part's fine. I'm a little fuzzy on if it answers the question

Well, the question is "what's the difference between various methods" not "how do I..." so I'm not convinced the app will tell the OP what the difference is.

no, he's suggesting an alternate way to do it

well, it's basically like a third option

7:57 AM
sometimes that can help - you get questions where someone is trying to fix something weird and it ends up being complicated - once you find out what the actual original problem is, there might be an easier alternative way to achieve it
"instead of trying to fix X, why are you even doing X in the first place? just do Y"

yeah
... wait... iphone question?

True, plus I only read half the original question, the other half actually does go into the grouping question and that app would be of use there
@JourneymanGeek Old iphone question

That always throws me off.
hmm, answer's valid... question.. was...
oh well. its time to rouse the small terrier and see where he wants to go for his walkies

Have fun :)

8:26 AM
Beautiful... "file-system shearing" that just made my morning :)

Q: NTFS file-system shearing and access control

iUngiI have a NTFS partition, and I want to share a folder, but I want to manage the access of the subfolders, for example this folder contains 20 subfolders, the desktop users have access only 10 subfolders. How can I manage this? How can I control a NTFS partition at all?

I know what was meant, but shearing files sounds like fun

@Mokubai hehe, changed... I made a few edits, but, missed that one

Aye, I quite often miss the actual question titles when doing edits

That really.... sucks... Read the comment under my answer, after I have given so much detail/spent ages on it!

A: NTFS file-system sharing and access control

William HilsumThis procedure changes quite a bit weather you are on a domain or workgroup. If you have everything or nothing with people at the moment and just want to give a few people access to a few folders, the problem sounds like it is to do with inheritance. For a domain: I would share the top folder...

facepalm
added the tag for them

revoked my +1 and put in a -1

Going to delete my answer, only fair... Just hope someone asks a similar question soon!

eh. people who don't mention their OS need to be bitched.

9:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek especially when it isn't obvious!

even if it was.
slhck seems to be on a roll today
lots of tag wiki stuff, and mostly incredibly well done

10:39 AM
@JourneymanGeek Looks like everything is fair game - if he wins a T-shirt, I expect he will edit it with a Sharpie!

eheh
@Linker3000: its a good thing. I'm just embarassed cause i did about the same yesterday when i discovered i could edit tags, just not as well ;p

@Sathya Groan!

@Linker3000 ;p

(and.. i didn't recall seeing any tags coming up for peer-review until yesterday...)

@Sathya I presume that's a 'shop - but it would be funny if Fluke put that in as an 'easter egg' you could trigger through the switches.

10:44 AM
@Linker3000 pretty sure it's a 'chop
@Linker3000 :D
oye @BloodPhilia in here.

@Sathya Haha!

;p

@Sathya So, what's up :D

you don't have to hide it @BloodP ;p
@BloodPhilia same ol' :)
brb getting some coffee

@Sathya XD But I don't want to look like I'm bragging xD
@Sathya Oy, get me some

10:57 AM
here pours some coffee to @BloodP

@Sathya Why does everyone say BloodP all of a sudden D:
Like I'm bloody pee
:P
But thanks

that's even better. I'm going to call you that ;P

@Sathya What happened to Fruity?
xD

all aliases ;P
I'll rotate those ;p

I was wondering why my computer got so slow!
Stupid usenetthing is unrarring/repairing

11:00 AM
lol
that's one of those things i need to learn to use at some point

usenet?
It's quite easy :P

yeah
its harder to get access to the juicy stuff without paying for a provider tho ;p
its a bit like irc, potentially useful, but esoteric
hm, i didn't realise SE chat was unicode capable

hi all

@JourneymanGeek I pay 3 euros a month :P

I can't seem to get my PC to boot from a USB drive. Its as if the administrators have somehow disabled accessing the boot menu (F10) at startup - is this possible?

11:07 AM
@Greg Hi!

@BloodPhilia: no access to a credit card for now ;p

@Greg Yes, that might be possible

@Greg: could be done in bios. could also be that specific usb drive

@JourneymanGeek I don't even own a credit card :P

@JourneymanGeek I'm not able to access the boot menu at all - it just starts loading windows even though I'm hammering F10

11:09 AM
@Greg: f10? shouldn't it be f8?

hold on...

assuming you mean the windows boot menu
if you mean the bios one, it might be del or f1

@JourneymanGeek Or F2, or F12
Or any other really...

@BloodPhilia: i've gotten the boot menu by banging random keys before...
@Greg: you have access to the bios settings?

@JourneymanGeek its the same for any button at the start - they are all ignored

11:15 AM
that sounds unusual, the most they usually do is password protect the bios...

@Greg Is it a laptop?
Fast/Quick boot might be enabled...

it is a desktop computer, loaded with Windows 7, and I have a working USB drive that I want to boot from.
Pressing F2, holding F2 or tapping F2 doesn't seem to do anything.

@Greg Might it be a usb keyboard on a mobo that has a ps2 connector

The only thing I can think could be affecting it is the fact that there is a password (blank) set in the bios.
@BloodPhilia its a brand new motherboard.

@Greg It can still have a PS2 connector? :P

11:20 AM
let me check
@BloodPhilia no PS/2 connections on the back that I can see

@Greg Okay!

any ideas?

@BloodPhilia you can gift it to me :p

@Sathya Lolol xD

@Greg: tried swapping keyboards? (for all the good it does...)

11:32 AM
the keyboard does work though...
when prompted for the password before booting I can type

it prompts for a password before booting?
could there be a different password to enable biosy stuff?

hmmm, hadn't thought of that. Is that possible - blank password doesn't allow password but allows boot, admin password allows bios?

considering i know almost nothing of the system in question... its plausible
a blank password wouldn't make sense otherwise

very true...
so I'm guessing I can't access the BIOS ... is there any other plausible way to boot from USB?
is there a special way to reboot or something?

hmm
maybe trick the bootloader on windows into loading something that would load the USB key?

11:37 AM
oooh new flash ...

maybe with easybcd...

I hold F10, which is "boot menu" on the POST wallpaper, and a new kind of menu comes up ... not boot selection...

assuming you run win7 or vista
...

it says "Edit boot options for: Windows 7"

damn, i was hoping to see if could talk you into getting bcd to usb boot, cause i've been meaning to play with that ;p
that's the most wierd*** boot option i've seen

11:39 AM
There is an area on screen under "Edit boot options" for typing... I'm guessing I could put something in there to boot from USB?

yup, presumably
has no idea from here onwards

sorry about the 200-rep drop @JourneymanGeek

lol
bounty?
also, its only about one good answer's worth. i'll survive
which question(s) tho?

@JourneymanGeek and @EveryoneElse
The screen reads:
Edit Windows boot options for: Windows 7
Path: \Windows\system32\winload.exe
Patition: 2
Hard disk: a7737d61

[ /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN| ]
The bit inside the square brackets is an input box, I can type whatever I want there
I guess there may be some option to boot from USB there?

hm, that's quite useless in this context. i suspect.

11:47 AM
After googling, it seems this just adds lines to boot.ini
I thought boot.ini was for old versions of Windows ... is it still around for Win7?

@JourneymanGeek na rep recalc

@JourneymanGeek no idea, clearing up lot of cruft, just did one now to prevent the heart attack later ;p

Is there a way I can restart Windows to boot from USB rather than manually selecting USB myself?

;p
@Greg: easybcd might allow you to add a boot from USB option to windows.
assuming its for personal use (or unofficial sneakery)

11:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek yeah, just to boot my portable linux distro

eh, one reason i hate using non-personal systems. I shouldn't need to jump through hoops to get things done.

12:43 PM
I just don't know why some organisations put so much [fake] security on their Windows machines.

2 hours later…
2:26 PM
@Greg: cause fake security is make-work ;p

2:46 PM
Any lurking mods? this one's getting a bit out of hand....

Q: What is the real difference between LAN and WAN?

user652412What I understand is: A LAN is connecting two or more computers to form a cable network between them. A WAN is connecting two or more computers over a broad area to form a cable network between them. So, is the difference the length of cable used to form a network or does it depend if it's...

well, it's an alright question.

@Sathya Hmm - the answers are going all over the place though.

downvote 'em. if they're so bad, flag 'em. @link

I plan to but it seems to stretch the definition of ....practical, answerable questions based on actual problems that you face"

@Linker3000: not knowing what a lan is... can be a problem

2:55 PM
@JourneymanGeek I know - but then you can use that argument to make pretty much anything valid - ie: "What plastic is used to make the keys on most computer keyboards"..etc...

@Linker3000 but how can that example be a viable problem for a consumer?

@DMA57361 Where does 'consumer' come into it?

"computer enthusiasts and power users."
and the explicit block on corporatey stuff going to SF
I'm not sure how anyone not creating a keyboard in a factory would need to know that
regardless, I've always found the "actual problems that you face" clause to be a bit of a two edged sword
yes it blocks some daft questions, great, but there's others that could be useful that it also can deflect

@DMA57361 Know what you mean - it's not worth too much heavy debate, but this Q seems to be excellent Google fodda rather than needing people to cut n paste stuff from other sites - it takes no specific knowledge to answer it. Anyway, moving on....!

unfortunately they never made the "general reference" close reason available everywhere :)

3:02 PM
Yeah - Maybe there needs to a be a 'vote to close' option that says in a more diplomatic way 'FFS have you even tried Googling it?' ;-)

it's called "general reference" but AFAIK only SciFi and English have it (or had it... not sure it's still there)
> General reference: this question is too basic; the answer is indexed in any number of general internet reference sources designed specifically to find that type of information

hmm, not a bad idea, though i'd never use it

it'd need using only infrequently but still might be handy
I suspect, however, it's unlike to spread around the network

@DMA57361 Joel Spolsky said something about how he wanted SE to become the end-all reference or something

I simply don't think there's such a thing as a bad question, outside shopping reccomendations and laziness...

3:05 PM
@digitxp indeed, I was trying to find a reference to such :)

oh joy, cyberduck is misbehaving

@JourneymanGeek I take it you haven't been to a middle school lately.
"How many C's are in CNN?"

@digitxp: dear god, no

@JourneymanGeek It made it into the yearbook.

@JourneymanGeek but does "not looking up the answer that's clearly stated on wikipedia and the rest of the net" constitute laziness to you?

3:08 PM
@DMA57361: eh, point.

indeed, doesn't matter anyway, we're unlikely to ever see GR as a close reason

... i switched the d for an f in cyberduck... twice... while trying to answer a question...

@JourneymanGeek a potentially dangerous mistake :/

one i caught both times ;p

Dumb question here...where do I do that tag approval thingy?

3:21 PM
@digitxp "tag approval" thing...?

if you have enough rep, it'll pop up like edit approval

do you mean voting on synonyms...? or approving tag wiki edits?
right, I'm going to do that "going home from work" thing I here good things about, see you all later

I feel a bit weird about this privilege: superuser.com/privileges/protect-questions

@digitxp: white on red numbers, pops up on top...
only noticed them yesterday for some odd reason ;p
ahh, it turns up with regular edits

As you have probably heard, HP evaluated alternatives for its Personal Systems Group; which includes the exploration of separating their PC business into a separate company through a spin-off or other transaction.

However, they recently unveiled a new all-in-one Elite business desktop which integrates the power of Intel’s second-generation Core vPro technology; delivering up to 40 percent better performance, 15 percent faster hard drive access, and reduced downtime via remote IT management. …

Hi @Clippy - bring back the Compaq brand!

@digitxp hey man

Q: VLC media player can't play an internet radio stream, but firefox and Window Media Player can. How can I fix VLC?

VaccanoI am trying to connect to this online radio station (it is in Thai) using VLC: http://www2.mcot.net/radio/fm_1005.asx For some reason, when I connect using Firefox or IE (IE just dumps me over to Windows Media Player), it works just fine. But when I connect using VLC it tells me: Your input...

but the title is just ghastly long

@KronoS Well, I'm following the poster around changing 'VCL' to 'VLC'!!

@KronoS "Why can't VLC open this MMS URL?"

@digitxp Based on my digging, it may be a codec issue at the other end.

@Linker3000 Ah the joys of any contest... increased participation and increased moderation :P

4:12 PM
"We have just updated to Windows Media Codec v9 at the station's encoder, which seems to have solved the issue of the stream not playing in VLC." - this from another site
@KronoS Well, I am not particularly involved in that - I'm just having a lazy day off work and keeping an eye on the site as I do other things.

@KronoS And I'm trying to figure out how the heck flagging and tag editing is supposed to work.

@digitxp what do you mean?

I'm supposed to have tag wiki approval privs, but I don't know where I do that.

Um - what to do (or just leave it...?)

Q: How can you rename a file by moving it and only specifying a destination directory?

Walter NissenLet's say you have a file, foo.py that you are moving into a directory, call it /tmp. How can you change the filename without specifying anything in the mv command except a source file name and a destination directory? This is kind of a trick question but it happened to me and caused problems. I...

hi
i installed jdk on windows and then without uninstalling removed the java folder from program files. now when i try to reinstall jdk the installation proceeds a little and then halts saying that a dll is not found. i m on windows 7 how can i install jdk now

@Linker3000 Close under "not a real question", my comment explains enough...

@TomWijsman LOL - like the comment!

hi @TomWijsman
any ideas abt my problem

@lovesh Hmm, you removed the Java folder by accident I suppose?

yes

4:24 PM
Between the accidental removal and reinstalling; have you tried to reboot the computer to make sure the DLL isn't loaded anymore?

yes a lot of times
i also tried some program to remove temporary files and clean the registry but no help

@lovesh: Can you download Process Monitor, accept the license, click OK, do your installation until it says the warning, then in Process Monitor click the Save button and save it somewhere and upload it?
Also mention the name of the .dll if it gives us one, so we know what to look for. If needed, you can click in the message box and hit CTRL+C to copy it's content so you can paste it here (click the Fixed Font button here before sending so it's code)

actually there is a problem Tom. i am running windows xp and this is my friends problem so i cant do that
i have seen that message. it does not specify the name of the dll file

@lovesh: There is no way of identifying the actual underlying problem if we can't have a trace of what the installation is doing...

it just says a dll file is missing
@TomWijsman your right

4:29 PM
That program is from Microsoft and you can see the content of the trace yourself by opening it afterwards, there is nothing personal identifiable if you aren't doing anything else at the meantime.
(Don't close the message box when it comes up, just save the trace; this is important so the installer stops generating events where the actual error is)

@TomWijsman i meant that he is not here right now so i dont hav his notebook with me to try this
i trust you :)

@lovesh: Ah, that way...
The only thing that you could still try is to search the actual error on Google and try random solutions.

i ve called my friend online l
ok
i ve aked him to download process monitor and tell me the trace
how can i save the trace?
@TomWijsman procmon.exe executed what now

@lovesh It's not in the file menu?

@lovesh File -> Save
Or the famous floppy disk button.
If the file is too big, put it in a zip file (it's text so compresses easily). Then, upload to a site like 4shared...
(I'm going to eat, brb)

4:45 PM
@TomWijsman should i run the jdk installation before saving
?

Yes.
20 mins ago, by Tom Wijsman
@lovesh: Can you download Process Monitor, accept the license, click OK, do your installation until it says the warning, then in Process Monitor click the Save button and save it somewhere and upload it?

@TomWijsman Droplr, Cloudapp, Fyels > 4shared

Droplr needs a client.
Cloudapp is Mac Os X only and needs a client from their App Store.
Fyels seems to be offline.
@digitxp: So, none of these seem to be an option for a quick file share...

5:07 PM
@TomWijsman i cant upload the file coz its 339 mb and my connection really sucks so wat can i do once i hav that file?

@lovesh How long did you run the trace?
Have you tried to put it into a zip file?
23 mins ago, by Tom Wijsman
If the file is too big, put it in a zip file (it's text so compresses easily). Then, upload to a site like 4shared...

the file is with my friend and even i zip it wont be good coz my internet speed is abt 10 kbps

@lovesh: And his connection?

so wat do actually look for in that?
same

Well, do you know the process name of the installer?

5:13 PM
we are cheap
its jdk and then some version name

You need to open the trace and make sure it's not capturing new events (File -> Capture Events off).
Then, look for the last event of the jdk process in the trace.
@lovesh: You can click at the bottom, then Find and make it search up for jdk.
With bottom I mean last entry.

ok then

@TomWijsman filedropper.com is pretty good

@lovesh: Then double click the event and click Copy All in the lower right bottom.
Which you can paste here (don't forget Fixed Font button).
@digitxp: Looks good, I usually just look for the first random file upload service I can find.

@TomWijsman i understand that you r really trying to help me but i dont have that file and my friend has gone offline again. i will get that file tomorrow and then i ll ask for help
sorry and thanks a lot

5:24 PM
@lovesh: Good luck, no problem.

6:04 PM
@WilliamHilsum you around?
