chat is cat for french?

3:41 PM
@jokerdino no, I'm pretty sure if a cat says "chat" it isn't trying to tell you, "french!"
however, chat is french for cat.

Bob
awesome game

french is chat for cat?
chat is cat in french

Bob

@jokerdino no, I'm pretty sure when a chat says "french" it isn't trying to tell you, "cat!"
@jokerdino yes.

@Bob Still a bit on the rich side, it's tempting though....

@Mokubai hey there MODERATOR
is your new co-mod (the dog) leaving you anything to moderate?

Hey there buddy! slips £5 for the very subtle new mod introduction
Yeah, there's a few bits for me to look at. :-)

my imagination said that the moment JMG gets mod tools he'd just immediately zero out all queues (flag queue, close vote queue, etc)
I imagine him as this incredibly productive guy/dog

@allquixotic You have a cat. I envy you a lot.

4:22 PM
Yeah, cats are awesome. Well, my cats are awesome anyway. :-P
What kind of cat do you have @allquixotic

If I ever have a cat, I'm gonna name him "Gato". (It means "cat").

Our cats both have names but usually I just call them "hey, cat!"

Bob
@Mokubai cat1 and cat2

As a teen I had a friend that whenever her mother got mad at her, or any of her sisters, she yelled angrily all of their names in sequence. That way she'd never get it wrong.
Well, not "whenever" as it suggests each time. Only when she was really mad and shouted to call a daughter. But it was funny to watch (not for them, I suppose)

Anyone awesome with setting up Moodle on Linux?

Me! Me! Pick me!
In fact, I hate moodle. But I have set it up on a testing env twice.
(And cursed it on a live env a few dozens of times)
It was quite a while ago and my memory sucks big time, so the details are a bit blurry

Is it a good idea to connect computers in office to Wi-Fi rather than have them connected through LAN cables to internet?

@Boris_yo Not if you value your sanity

5:07 PM
@Mokubai What do you mean?
@CanadianLuke I wish I could be of better assistance. I have never faced this. (Or maybe I did and then completely forgot...)

@Boris_yo For offices, I always recommend LAN cables. Offer Wifi, but with limited support

@CanadianLuke Encrypted connection with overhead?

In a small office Wifi makes it easier, more than a "few" users though and you end up loosing bandwidth to collisions and "keep alive" data
Ethernet is switched and collision free
Well, these days it is anyway

As well, not many companies will spend the big bucks for PROPER wireless gear that is meant to handle the extra traffic

Hubs.... collisions... shudder

5:10 PM
@Mokubai a Maine Coon

@allquixotic Giant cat! Wow!

If I have USB 3.0 cable and my laptop is USB 2.0, there's no way I can test transfer speed of cable?

@Mokubai well she used to be an overweight Maine Coon, but we put her on a diet, so now she's normal weight -- for a Maine Coon. about 17 lbs.
she was really giant before :P

The pics on google make me want one!

@Mokubai she doesn't meow like any other cat I've ever heard
apparently atypical meows are common among Maine Coons

5:12 PM
@Mokubai Is Ethernet inherently more secure than wifi or is it just a myth?

@Boris_yo No, cause USB3 has 9 pins, not 4 like USB2

it's more of a "mah" usually, though there are variations :P

It's more secure to certain attacks

@ThatBrazilianGuy depends on how it's implemented, the data is not encrypted be default so anyone could technically do a MITM attack on a network using a machine with two network cards, but switched ethernet does not rebroadcast all data by default

And that's why I say CERTAIN attacks :)

heh. @JourneymanGeek Moto G? How about Huawei? :P ebay.com.au/itm/…
Moto G would get more updates/has a newer version of Android, and has better mobile network support, but otherwise the Huawei beats it.
Huawei is also surprisingly close to stock Android. And there's CM11 w/ KitKat available for it too

@ThatBrazilianGuy Carmen is easier to find,

@Bob for that price plus a tiny bit more you can get a 4 TB HDD... still not dense enough for me

@allquixotic True.
I was going for a cache, though.

Q: Upgrading RAID controller to 4kn - do I have to reinitialize the array to use 4kn?

allquixoticI have an enterprise-grade workstation with an Adaptec 6405E RAID controller in it. According to Adaptec, this RAID controller does not, and will never be able to, natively support 4K disk sectors. If you stick a 4K disk in it, then if it has 512-byte sector emulation mode (512e), it will use 512...

"@
Add-Type -TypeDefinition $S -Language CSharp
[P]::M()

Bob
@allquixotic You can probably do it without C#.
Also, I just noticed it goes dangerously close to the "shutting down the computer or turning the power of the monitor off is NOT allowed" rule :P
But! It really puts the monitor in standby, not actually turning it off! :D

shorter:
$S="public class P{public static void M(){SendMessage(65535,274,61808,2);}[System.Runtime.InteropServices.DllImport(""‌user32.dll"")]static extern int SendMessage(int a,int b,int c,int d);}";Add-Type -TypeDefinition $S -Language CSharp;[P]::M()

Bob
@allquixotic You can actually drop the .dll
@allquixotic Also, you could just declare the SendMessage and call it directly from PS, avoiding the definition of Main

Invoke-Win32 "user32" ([Int32]) "SendMessage" [IntPtr], [Int32], [Int32], [Int32], 65535,274,61808,2 ?

oh dear god, that's horrendous

does anybody here use ming's gcc c compiler?

@barlop there's no such thing as "ming"; it's either mingw32, or mingw64. mingw64 you might think is just the 64-bit version of the mingw32 suite, but no, it's actually a complete fork of the project with more features and supports 32-bit also.
mingw32 and mingw64 differ sufficiently in functionality and currentness that before I discuss it any further with you I insist you confidently proclaim which one you're using

@allquixotic c:\Program Files (x86)\mingw-builds
i guess mingw32 ^

@barlop no. where did you download it from?

Bob
7:44 PM
@barlop even then there's a bunch of different builds. e.g.: tdm-gcc

i'll try to find out

> Projects joined MinGW-W64, and the new builds will be available on the MinGW-W64(sourceforge.net/projects/mingw-w64) site.

Bob
wait, can't you just gcc --version or something?

@Bob yeah, that should be at least somewhat revealing

c:\Program Files (x86)\mingw-builds\x32-4.8.1-posix-dwarf-rev5\mingw32\bin>gcc -
-version
gcc (rev5, Built by MinGW-W64 project) 4.8.1

Bob
7:46 PM
there we go! :)

ok, mingw-w64 4.8.1 is pretty decent
i think that might be the latest stable, although 4.9 has to be in the works by now
anyway, what's your question, now that I know you're using the superior mingw64?

I have a c file it requires a lib file wsock32.lib I have it but I don't know how to tell gcc to include it when compiling the C file

@barlop if wsock32.lib is on your library path you can just pass -lwsock32; if not, you need to also (in addition to the -l) pass -LC:\wherever\wsock32directory

the file is there though i still get an error trying to compile it
@allquixotic c:\udp>gcc -lwsock32.lib timecli.c
c:/program files (x86)/mingw-builds/x32-4.8.1-posix-dwarf-rev5/mingw32/bin/../li
b/gcc/i686-w64-mingw32/4.8.1/../../../../i686-w64-mingw32/bin/ld.exe: cannot fin
d -lwsock32.lib
collect2.exe: error: ld returned 1 exit status

c:\udp>
i'm wondering if maybe i put it in the wrong directory c:\Program Files (x86)\mingw-builds\x32-4.8.1-posix-dwarf-rev5\mingw32\lib> has a bunch of files with extension .a and one with extension .lib wsock32.lib which I put there.

8:02 PM
@barlop try compiling the .lib file directly into the executable alongside timecli.c -- it may or may not work depending on whether the .lib is a static link library or a dynamic link library (AFAIK they're the same extension on Windows), but try it anyway

what's the command?

!!codeworks

@barlop just include the .lib file in the build
gcc --help -- you can have more than one translation unit on the command line, so you literally just specify the file name(s)
it'll realize that the lib file is already compiled and the .c file isn't; perform compilation; then try to link them
also read this while you're using the win32 api

@allquixotic holy mackeral I think that worked C:\udp>gcc timecli.c wsock32.lib worked. C:\udp>gcc wsock32.lib timecli.c didn't
amazing.. thanks @allquixotic

8:14 PM
@barlop but does it run?

Yes
it is a little program(I didn't write).. there are two.. timecli and timeserver..
they use udp.
it's useful because it enables me to set up a udp server and see if I can access it..
then I know whether a firewall is blocking it or not
so I can verify if udp ports are being blocked or not.
nmap is not very good at checking udp ports.
an article about nmap and udp ports.. though it says nmap is good now, I didn't find it so good now isc.sans.edu/diary/…
even with so-called supported ports, nmap was still saying open|filtered. so i figured screw it i'll check whether udp ports are open myself.. by running udp servers on the ports myself.
that meant finding a udp client and server program www.codeproject.com/Articles/11740/A-simple-UDP-time-server-and-client-for-begin‌ners which btw is downloadable in compiled form too, but I wanted to be able to compile it myself 'cos it seemed lame not to be able to. So, i'm glad I can now!

8:38 PM
@CanadianLuke Why test it yourself when your customers can do it for you?

@Mokubai This.

@Mokubai Cause I'm not Microsoft

@CanadianLuke But you could be... one day.

Nope, I got my hate on for MS right now

9:38 PM
This scanner.
Is the bane of my existence right now.
I have to replace the power supply... which is guarded by about 40 or so screws.

@MichaelFrank can't you just scan an image of a working power supply, print it out and bang?

Actually, the bang part is why I need to replace the power supply. A power surge hit this thing and I need to prove it was working well before the surge.

ahh

10:02 PM
@MichaelFrank surely that is up to the manufacturer to disprove?

@Mokubai We're sorta the authorised repairer for this scanner. aaaaaaaaaaand we also sold it.

Hmmm. As @allquixotic says then: "ahh"
So you have the joy of proving the power surge did it and they need to pay to repair it rather than it dying on its own...

Yea, something like that. Probably for insurance purposes.
This things cost about $2500.

30 mins ago, by Michael Frank

That thing? $2500?!

Yep. Business quality scanner. Up to 25 ppm.

It looks like their inspiration for the design was the Nintendo Game boy...
;P

Something like that!

Picture doesn't do it justice, I'm assuming that's a document feeder on the top side.
Why so many screws though?

The power supply is literally the first thing put into the chassis.

So it was designed by someone who had no idea what is most likely to blow up in an electrical device. Nice.

Yea, pretty much.

10:15 PM
Rule No 1. Make the PSU (relatively) easy to replace.

The only thing I don't have to remove is the motherboard.

how can you prove a power surge damaged equipment?

Well if I replace the power supply and it works then it was the power supply at fault.

but that doesn't prove a power surge damaged the power supply
and also maybe it's possible a power surge could cause some bad voltages/current to go to some components, damaging them, but leaving the power supply ok afterwards.

10:35 PM
Power supply replaced, turned on and working. :D
@barlop For power issues with pretty much anything we service, the standard troubleshooting procedure is always start at the power supply.

@MichaelFrank no qualms there but does that prove to them it was the surge that damaged the power supply?
and if the power supply was fine, would that prove that the surge didn't damage the system?
I don't think it really proves either.

@barlop It's probably a warranty dispute between the end user and the vendor. I'm just tasked with finding out what broke.
