Q: where and How the computer/mobile phone time and date stored

user310685i tried something, i noted down the current time within my laptop(dell.. win 7) it was 12.15 PM 5 April 2014, and i did the same with my mobile phone(samsung galaxy s2, andriod jelly bean) it was 12.16 PM 5 April 2014.... . THEN i switched off my mobile phone and my laptop for for allmost appro...

@MichaelFrank wow. just... wow

1:32 AM
Ugh... I have to service a machine that's probably as old as I am... without any service manual and no idea of the exact problem. Sounds fun!

Bob
@MichaelFrank :)
@allquixotic a lot? :P

1:54 AM

Bob
@MichaelFrank What?
I meant, "what do you mean by you need to learn a lot of JS"

@allquixotic I couldn't get your jumpstarter app to work, I finally figured out how to get the code running though I have a bot going in chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/14370/bluecheese-monsters-home

Bob
...

I dunno. I'm just bored at work.

1:59 AM
@Malachi it's complicated, but a guy over on Aviation knows how to do it
I don't really have the energy to walk you through it :/

@allquixotic Is that why you have a sad Gravatar? :(

@MichaelFrank nah

@allquixotic I will figure it all out, I have to bot running in that chat room, I am going to start looking through the code and stuff and seeing what I can figure out

2:17 AM
@Malachi the driver is just for headless operation so you can run it on a dedicated server
if you're running it on some beater desktop you don't need to worry about that

@allquixotic makes sense.

2:49 AM
@MichaelFrank hehehe

After reading 5 pages worth of these little stories, it's obvious there are some really insane clients out there.

@MichaelFrank that's Luke's favorite idle site at lunchtime :P

Q: Is there a way to find who I sent an email to, after deleting the email in windows live mail from the trash folder, on windows 7?

EpsilonI've sent an email with sensitive information, with Windows Live Mail, then put it in the trash folder of the software, then emptied the trash folder. The person on the other end never got the email. Is there an outgoing mail history somewhere on my computer, where I could check who I actually se...

@Malachi if you have an image at http://malachi.com/lame.png and you want it to display when you type !!lame, give the bot this command: !!learn lame '<>http://malachi.com/lame.png'

@allquixotic lol, I fingered it out about an hour ago

but thank you @allquixotic

@Malachi You fingered what?

@MichaelFrank I don't know if I should engage in this conversation for fear of going too far off topic.....lol JK I figured out how to teach my bot to post a picture

@Bob I have tested it, I unplugged my laptop from my normal modem-router, and plugged it into the modem thing. It gave the laptop the external ip, said the gateway was that external ip. I did route print, it showed the same ip for interface as for gateway. Apparently that's normal with SLIP or PPP.

Anyone good with Wordpress themes? I'm getting sick of my default, and I can't find one for technology

@bob and funnily enough, the telephone cable was still in the modem router not in the plain modem thing when I plugged the comp into it but it still got that external ip from it. (so obviously the device stored it from the isp). The laptop didn't have that ip immediately before plugging it in. so it really got that ip from the device while the devicw wasn't plugged into the isp
so v secure test!

bleh
I'm guessing its fixable, but I have a slight bias since I know the answer more or less

6:00 AM
@JourneymanGeek I leave it to the community if doubtful, but I'd say ot

lol
@Sathya I actually know the answer. ;p
Which is a pain in the ass.

then go for it

I'll just wait for the closevotes, then kill it off/comment ;p

@JourneymanGeek ftfy
ok this is driving me crazy

what is?

is there a way to follow focus to to where my curosr is
esp on extended desktop system

seems to work for me

hmm still not activated with that on
oh wait it does
thanks!

Bob
@barlop I wanted to see what it said for the ext ip destination (expecting on-link)
ah well, close enough :P
@Sathya "focus"?
there's an option in mouse properties to have ctrl show an animated circle over the cursor

6:18 AM
@Bob no as in if my mouse cursor moves from a window on desktop1 to window on desktop2 , window2 should have focus

Bob
ah, then that's the one jou posted

yeah, works well

Hi all. Is this the right SE to ask the following question?
as a user of FB, is it possible and if yes, how (FF extensions, GM scripts) to avoid geo-ip redirection from pages?
There are certain product pages (e.g.: film, videogames) that basing on your ip automatically redirect you to the locale of where you are living. This forces me to see only pages (and updates/feeds) in German, when I want the English ones.
I know that a proxy might do the job, but would be my last resort (right after stop caring for those pages)

8:26 AM
hm. that makes no sense. I am trying to print a 825kb pdf. My computer is sending a 2gb document to the printer
@Federico: if its browser extentions and such, possibly
chances are the there's a similar question here, or on webapps already though

@JourneymanGeek is the pdf made up by images?
@JourneymanGeek ok, will search a bit

probably
its a legal document

isn't there an option to turn off "print as image"?

it should be off already
(i'm just being grumpy. Thing things work when you bitch about them)

searched "facebook redirect" but haven't found any relevant question. I will wait for another opinion and then eventually post my question.

8:34 AM
@Federico you see, this probably requires some extensive testing. You need to determine if it's really based on IP or not. If it's IP, then proxy (or extension which handles proxies) would be only option. However, if it's based on some cookies or maybe browser preferences, then certainly it's adjustable via JS script (or preferences).
If it's based on what it thinks of your profile internally in its database, you are probably out of luck unless you are willing to invest a lot of time in reverse engineering it

I see.
I there a way in which I could test this?
An example page: https://www.facebook.com/TotalWar
I get redirected to: https://www.facebook.com/TotalWarDE
To see the english one I have to go here: https://www.facebook.com/TotalWar?brandloc=DISABLE (notice the option in the url)
but if I "like" the page I get the updates from the german version :|

8:56 AM
so if you like it, option no longer works?

the option is valid only for when I visit the page through the link, not for the feeds I get

what if you visit the feed page with that option?
or did you mean RSS?

if I like the page, I can still visit the page with the option, but my wall feed are in german
no RSS

does anyone but me use RSS any more? ;p

I use RSS for lots of stuff, but that's not what I want in this case

9:02 AM
<--- total RSS geek. Have a nice setup built around ttrss ;p

i gave up on RSS

so, to wrap up, you 2 are even mods here. do you think I can post the question?
:P

@Federico Web Applications is more suited

so I still didn't get, excuse me if I misunderstand. What if you visit wall feed with the option? and how did you even discover it?:)

but honestly I don't see a way out

9:06 AM
Or is it not acceptable to make wall English>
?

@Sathya thanks, I will ask there.
@Gear54rus I don't know how else to explain it, I hope someone else can succeed where I fail

Alright, good luck

Q: Boot loop on thumb drive, but flash drive works fine

user1608638I have two USBs containing the same operating system, with legacy boot. I have put the system onto two different USBs, where one is detected as a "Thumb drive" and the other is detected as a "Flash drive". However, the one marked as thumb drive goes into boot loop on many PCs that I have tested, ...

@OliverSalzburg those TLDs...
eh, I'm avoiding them
cost too much, and don't sound enough like traditional domains
I just picked up Auditorium. Wonder if it's any good.
Huh.
It's certainly interesting and well-made.

1:54 PM
@JourneymanGeek When I asked you about configuring a modem safely, you said about turning off dhcp on a modem, rather than turning off nat. If you turn off DHCP you need a static ip to configure a modem, but how is that more secure than getting the IP via DHCP? aim is to configure modem safely when it is giving an external ip

Bob
@barlop you're approaching this from the wrong direction... just get a good software firewall on the internet-exposed machine
heck, I say "good" but Windows Firewall on default-deny-all is good enough
granted, it does depend on what you're doing

@Bob can you elaborate on depends on what you're doing

Bob
@barlop on what level of security you require
whether you're actually hosting any services
etc.
whether you need to disable nat
as bad as nat is in many circumstances, it does contribute to defence in depth
unless you wanted to get a dedicated hardware firewall, but those are expensive and likely overkill

2:10 PM
@barlop: I also said it makes sense to unplug the modem from the wider internet ;p
if you're that paranoid

@JourneymanGeek i'm curious why you said you don't disable nat you disable dhcp.. What benefit is there to disabling dhcp?

cause I misunderstood what you were trying to do
mainly cause I didn't and still don't see how turning off nat on a consumer router does anything

Bob
there's two reasons to have nat enabled

@Bob yes I know I can see benefits to NAT i'm aware of that

Bob
one is to have a separate private IP address space, which is necessary if you want multiple internet-connected devices on home IPv4
the other is to act as a poor-man's firewall
well, the third reason is it's easier :P

2:14 PM
and we don't have ipv6 everywhere ;p

I wonder if people will stop using NAT and use proper firewalls and stuff when/if people have IPv6 everywhere
I reckon it's not possible to configure the modem when it's giving an external ip.

>_>
I don't have a network level firewall for ipv6

@Bob have you tried the deny all option in windows 7 firewall? where is it?

Bob
@allquixotic now I'm really annoyed at our gov aborting the NBN rollout
$90/month unlimited 100/40 FTTP was possible!

@Bob: .... I can get gigabit FTTP for that much ;p
er... actually possibly less

Bob
2:19 PM
@JourneymanGeek hey, we're getting ADSL2+ for $60/month
this is amazing for Aus

we're paying 70something for cable internet, TV and phone
;p
if we switched to fiber its ~5-6 dollars more

hey. I'm not sure where this question fits best...I've a problem with Horde (after installation and configuring it), it does not create it's database tables but instead throws me a bunch of errors because some SELECT statements fail (missing tables). Should I ask that on SU or on ServerFault?

(sorry for disrupting your conversation)

does the user you're ran the install script have proper permissions?

2:22 PM
uh, it was the root user ...so I guess?

@Bob I can't actually find a deny all option in the win7 firewall

@SteffenWinkler: its not exactly SU territory, but it might get chewed up and spat out on SF

@JourneymanGeek also the installation went via something called PEAR

for your database?
"went via something called" ...
ruh ruh raggy.

oh, yeah I created a user and assigned a database to it

also, yeah it already got chewed out by SF but I'm not sure why I got downvotes...well not entirely

I tend to like to install those things from scratch. Also PEAR iirc is a php package manager
(oh and roundcube is a prettier webmail client)
@SteffenWinkler: SF has... a certain culture

@JourneymanGeek it's "PHP Extension and Application Repository"

precisely ;p

I just never heared of it before ;). So it's 'something' to me.

2:25 PM
@Bob ta.. there's also this I see win7 FW setting, superuser.com/questions/268902/… gives a screen for blocking outbound too allegedly. Untested, will see!

I don't tend to like those

Bob
@barlop Apparently, at least on Windows 8 w/ advanced firewall, it defaults ot blocking all inbound that are not on the allowed rule list

@JourneymanGeek oh I'm not using Horde as a webmail client, but I'm more interested in the calendar/contact frontend and the integrated SyncML server

Bob
so you can just review that list and remove everything off it
@SteffenWinkler PEAR?

@Bob I can't imagine any other default for a windows firewall

2:26 PM
ahh

Bob
@SteffenWinkler No, I mean "are you talking about PEAR"
I don't usually see it spelled out

@Bob oh, no. Just something I installed via PEAR
(the installation also went fine from my point of view)
according to Horde's documentation, after installing Horde, I've to copy a config file (and eventually adjust it) and then open up the webfrontend
that works.
but the next step is to configure the database and according to their documentation there should be a button to update/create the database schema. But there isn't. I already wrote an e-mail on their mailinglist but I got a response back that it should be there
I guess I'll do some php reading later this day ;)

and for some reason there are dozens of clients and programs that support it, but (as far as my google fu took me) only 2 servers that support it: Funambol (which I'm not fond of) and Horde (which is, apparently, not fond of me)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I just found that :P
So, no more disputed flags either? Huh.

I'll probably notice if I flag stuff on ... er... AU or SF I guess

you are in the game right?

2:53 PM
@jokerdino yea

you don't get the game?
it's easy. let me explain
it's a capture the flag type game
you get the other team's flag and go to your flag point.
you can score a point if your flag is not taken by the opponents.
if you get touched by other team when you have the flag, you die.
try to kill the other balls when they take your flag. prevent them from scoring and you should try to score as well.

Bob
@jokerdino yea, I get the concept. I just suck at the execution :P
why were you not in the game?
