@Neo

Neo
whats up mew

Mew
why di dyou downvote my answer

Neo
interesting. you assume I did =\

Mew
did you?

Neo
Nope

Mew
2:14 AM
my bad

Neo
Everything is your bad
grow up

Mew
I assumed you did because last time I checked you had 2 downvotes, but today you have 4 downvotes
online at the right time
and have voted 2 times today
i mean you had 4 votes, now you hav 6 downvotes

Neo
why are you keeping track of me so extensively
I'm going to report you for harassment mew

Mew
why?
is looking at a profile harassment?
I just asked why you downvoted
i'm sorry you have such thin skin

Neo
The way you accuse me of stuff is

Mew
2:16 AM
i didn't accuse u
i just merely asked why you did it

Neo
"why did you do it"

Mew
is it a bad thing to downvote?
i don't think so

Neo
that is assuming that I did it

Mew
it's like saying, why did you brush your teeth this morning
is that an accusation?

Neo
yes

Mew
2:17 AM
hardly so in my opinion, just a question
i wouldn't take offense if someone asked me why i brushed my teeth

Neo
we will let moderators decide =\

Mew
sure

Neo
I'm going to send them everything
All conversations are saved

Mew
i'm aware of that
they will see that you aren't capable of discussion

Neo
yep
I'm sure they will

Mew
2:23 AM
@Neo, I didn't mean to offend you with my comment, I just wondered wanted to encourage you to explain your downvote so my answer could improve
I didn't think you would be upset that I thought you downvoted the post

Neo
my downvote ?
I'm upset by the way you talk to me
Which not only I, but others have mentioned.

Mew
That's the way I talk to everyone
I'm very direct
exactly
you don't like my personality
wow

Neo
i'm seriously done with this

Mew
i've never called you anything like that
I just like to have reasonable discussions not resort to insults

jrg
Everyone please take a chill pill folks.

Mew
2:25 AM
Did you see his comment

jrg
@Neo: Please calm down, and remember the golden rule to treat others as you want to be treated.

Mew
Neo and I have had some disputes for a while

jrg
@Mew Yes, I acknowledged the flag.

Mew
he now says that I am harassign him
I certainly didn't mean this I just like to sort out disputes we have in chat

jrg
I'm sure that you are both reasonable people who will be able to sort out their differences in a civilized fashion without making references to parts of the human anatomy.

Mew
2:27 AM
Neo says he wants to report me for harassment
why are you keeping track of me so extensively
I'm going to report you for harassment mew
I look at Neo's profile the other day because he shot up 150 repuation points - which was unexpected in 2 minutes
it turned out it was voting fraud
but in any case I saw he only had made 4 downvotes
I don't think looking at profile is harassment

jrg
Gentlemen, please relax.
I'm not familiar with the background of this particular debate, but I would think that it might be worthwhile to take a step back and let things cool for a few days.

Mew
Yep
i'm going to stay out of chat for a few days
and hope I don't have too much backstabbing to read from Neo when I return

Neo
3:01 AM
@jrg, you are right, I should not have said that. I apologize mew. But this isnt 1 conflict, more of a series of conflicts. I'd like a moderator to get involved, as Its impossible for me function on this site when I get plunged into these abrasive discussions.
@jrg but yes, generally I am better with that. I should not have been childish.

Mew
@jrg, I'm quite disturbed at Neo's harassment claims, when I have merely raised in chat disputes we have had on the main site for discussion
I too would like a moderator to help resolve our conflicts

jrg
I am not a moderator on Earth Science, however I'm certain that if you ask here, someone will assist.

Mew
@jrg, we have no moderotors yet
@jrg, most of our disputes have arisen from moderator nominations

Neo
I have no dispute with that in a vaccum

Mew
I fear that if Neo becomes a moderator, he will not have the capacity for discussion, but will resort to harassment claims at start of any potential conflict

jrg
3:10 AM
Oh, fun. Um, I guess in that case, you should find a SE employee. I will go ask someone to take a look at this conversation and get back to you guys. Is that acceptable to both of you?

Neo
Sure, I'd like them to look at a few other conversations aswell.

Mew
Thankyou jrg, Neo's antagonistic actions on this site and then his refusal discuss in chat and harassment claims are distrubing to me. I would appreciate a moderator mediating our conflict

jrg
Ok, I will go ask them to get in touch.

2 hours later…
5:00 AM
@Mew for what its worth, I agree with the assessment that you are engaging in targeted harassment
You can't honestly believe starting a conversation with
3 hours ago, by Mew
why di dyou downvote my answer
is conducive to starting a discussion about why your post was downvoted.
@Neo I think your best course of action is to not respond any further to Mew. Let the current chatlog stand on its own and now that he's flagging comments, he's just going to try and bait something out of you that he can flag so he can appear to be in the right.
@Neo don't let him have that opportunity and just ignore him. Nothing constructive has come from your interactions and I don't believe anything will in the future.
@jrg I've pinged our community manager about this, it has been going on for days

Mew
5:15 AM
@casey, thanks for your input but I believe it is an overreaction to my statement "why did you downvote my answer"
There have been additional disputes in the past, but most have been trigged by Neos actions on the main site, which have raised the tensions between us
After our early disagreements Neo made a very antagonist comment to one of my comments. This is what lead to the previous disagreement where Neo first claimed harassment when in fact Neo's antagonist comment is what I perceived as him harassing me
Asking a user why they downvoted should be encouraged on the site. I honestly believed Neo downvoted since he was online at the time, and his downvote count increased by 2. I didn't mean to bully Neo out of his downvote, I just wanted some feedback to help me improve my answer if he indeed was the downvoter
Since he denies downvoting, that is fine - but I had deduced in all liklihood he was the downvoter. Not harassment just a mistake in reasoning assuming he is speaking the truth
I was not against the downvote by all means, but I was just seeking feedback
I'd also like the moderator reviwing this to ask Neo and Casey from insisting on my revealing my personal identity
to stop from*

Neo
@casey I agree it is not a good idea for me to talk to him any more, in any capacity

1 hour later…
6:44 AM
@Mew watching vote counts of users and then frantically searching for the one that changed when one of your posts is down-voted is not healthy. The occasional unexplained down-vote is just part of life on a system such as our's and you have to be able to be okay with that.
Both of you also need to realize that conflicts can only happen if they're fed by more than one.
Getting constructive feedback was an opportunity here, but a missed one. The thing to have done is said "Someone down-voted my answer, I think it's a perfectly good answer, does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with it (if anything)?" and then linking to it.

Mew
Yes in hindsight I realise I should have approached the downvote alot differently

And to that (strange down-votes), I leave you this :)

A: Should 'drive by' down voting be more effectively caught?

Tim PostThe answer was down voted because I lost my keys. Please, stay with me, let me explain this odd chain of events. Earlier today I couldn't get to the store on time because I could not find my keys. That caused me to miss the opportunity to run over a golf ball, which would have bounced between a...

(which I wrote after answering 'why was this down-voted' for the 200th time)

Neo
6:58 AM
@TimPost thanks for the comments, I agree with everything you've said (I am to blame for some of this). If you would, please take a look at some of our other conflicts. @Mew has accused me of being an antagonist, but I have no Idea how, and we are un able to have a dialog about this despite a few efforts.

Mew
@TimPost, specifically I accused him of being an antagonist because of his comment on the main site, which led to conflict

A: Why is Earth's outer-core liquid?

Ross MillikanThe pressure gradient is given by hydrostatic equilibrium. In a solid, this may not be exactly true, but creep will make it so. Mew
I made a comment to the answer here
which has since been deleted

Neo
7:00 AM
I have not deleted any of my comments

Mew
Neo responded to the comment in defence of the answerer, with an arrogant and frankly incorrect remark
the discussion above is when i raised this issue with Neo, because I thought his comment was harassment given my critisim of his moderator nomination
The context of the 2nd chat session is Neo had deleted one of my pictures from a post I had made
You will notice that Neo began the 2nd chat session

Neo
@TimPost While do not take offense to the content of the criticism (in fact, I addressed those very points in my acceptance post!) , I take offense to the relentlessness in which he makes his points. A man who spends an entire night, repeating the same argument over and over, despite people acknowledging it is a bit strange.

Mew
so it's hardly harassment when the issue ws raised by Neo here in chat
@Neo, I think you should re-read the session history
how did i repeat my argument over and over after your acknowledgement?
and how was it an entire night?

Why does any of this even matter? We're far beyond the impetus for the conflict at this point. Now, we're at the fact that it's still going on and isn't likely to stop unless you both stop it. I'm going to purge comments under both of your posts.

Neo
@TimPost It shouldn't matter, but when I am accused of a downvote for no real good reason, it seems that it will continue

Mew
7:08 AM
@Tim, in light of Neo's perception of being harassed, I'm willing to refrain from conversing with Neo. I just want to make sure I can defend myself before a moderator makes harsher actions
@Neo, I didn't consider it an accusation I apologize
If I say, why did you brush your teeth, it is not an accusation unless it is a bad thing to brush teeth

Neo
@Mew, actions speak louder than words. Don't apologize, just do.

Mew
I'm sorry if you took offense to my deduction that you downvoted
I was just seeking feedback because I thougth you were the downvoter
simple mistake

Neo
In vaccum, I agree. But you only really thought it was me because of our prior disagreements.

Mew
correct

@Neo That's a ... rather flippant way of accepting an olive branch. Just sayin'

Mew
7:10 AM
Neo, I think that perhaps you downvoted, because the downvote was quick, and I thought you may have a vendetta against me
considering our previous comments
conversations*
the fact you were online at the time, and had casted 2 votes today, and downvotes had increased by 2, I thought it was you, and I wanted some feedback
It was a mistake in reasoning
Neo, I am willing to stop speaking with you and you can stop speaking with me

Girls ... Girls ... you're both pretty. 'Nuff said.

Neo
@TimPost I intended it to be flippant. Not because I like being rude, but because other methods has not worked. I am at a loss. If he agrees to try and be a bit more cordial, thats fine, but I've indicated that I am not comfortable in how he approaches me for a while ow
now*
That being said, Its something easily repairable

I think he's come to realize that this escalated a bit more than he intended and that's kind of easy to get lost in once it happens - you're not always aware of it until all of a sudden you realize where it went.

Neo
@TimPost I agree, which is why when I have had conversations with other members on this forum about it, to get advice, I have always said that he is a force for good in this community.
@TimPost I really hope you do not delete the posts under my moderator nomination, I think he has some valid points.

7:33 AM
This is a pretty awesome community. This is the kind of site I've been looking for to explore with my 8 year old. Find some random question and then just go exploring it.
@Neo There were a ton of unrelated / obsolete comments on all of them, I just cleaned those up.

Mew
@TimPost, thankyou for mediating our conflict. @Neo I will aim to be more amicable and I will show more restraint with voicing concerns in a tactless manner

Neo
@TimPost I agree. I think we are growing at about ~20 members per day since open beta. I think that is pretty healthy, though this site is in dire need of experts. We have a few, but it isnt enough to keep up with the questions.

There was a bit of a disconnect on Sustainable Living when they first started, a lot of people read more of 'environmental science' into it, but that's not really the case (though there is some overlap). It showed a lot of potential for a community like this, I'm glad that energy found a home.

Neo
@Mew, I appreciate that.
This question: earthscience.stackexchange.com/questions/49/… will go unanswered for a long time =\.
Somewhat wish I didnt ask that question so early

@Neo Don't feel bad at all about asking that so early. That's a great question to draw a good expert on the topic, and the amount of votes says "Yes, this is the kind of stuff this community likes to talk about. I think I'll stick around."
In my experience, a small hand full of hard questions going unanswered is quite healthy, as that gives the truly skilled something to do when they arrive.

Neo
7:46 AM
I hope. I've been advertising this site at my department; Geologists tend not to be big computer users in my experience. It seems to me that most SE users are in some sort of computer related field, or at least the most active ones are. Which makes sense. The experts for this site will often be out in the field and unable to answer for months at a time as well. It will be interesting to see what kind of base we retain.
I constantly have to teach jr/sr level undergrads how to use excel when I TA....

When we launched Seasoned Advice, we horribly underestimated how many amateur cooks we had in our ranks of programmers, sysadmins and super users. Programmers tend to be interested in a plethora of sciences, including geology (I'm a bit of a rock hammer buff myself).

Neo
Seasoned Advice is a good name
for a cooking Q/A site

10 hours later…

Neo, if you want experts, think of a question, find an expert on it, and email them; I've done it before, it's easy, and it works 80% of the time. Also, just to be clear, I posted the question to SE and got the expert to answer on SE.

Neo
yes. I know some people who might be able to answer my questions
but now is a bad time in the academic year
perhaps in a few weeks when thesis/finals season is over

Never a good time to ask, and sometimes it takes people months to get back, but point is to send an email, then followup; the followups are key. Plus, I'd suggest picking experts that are already active online, not ones you know.

Neo
Interesting; Though that is somewhat the problem with earth sciences: not many are active online
we arent like mathematics, computer science.
Though many of us are mathematicians and computer scientists
but yes, i'll contact people
=)

6:01 PM
Neo: Okay, here's a possible example of what I mean, here's a list of four people with emails that might have some thoughts on your Navier-Stoke based question.
If you agree that they might add value to the question, just draft one email, saying "nice paper", and ask if they have any thought on the topic you've presented; don't cc them all, send one email per person, with their name in the Dear, though otherwise use the same email to save time.

Neo
Cool, I'll read over the paper

Nah, don't read the paper, :-)

Neo
lol why not =P
also thinking of contacting people here: whoi.edu/main/gfd/program-profile
since they host a fluid dynamics thing every year.

Issue with the link you provided is that there's nothing "personal" on the page - people are much more likely to respond to something that is personal to them. As for reading the paper, point was to find possible contacts, not stuff to read.

Neo
Well, yes. Though, if I am going to send an email saying "nice paper", I should actually mean it

6:09 PM
Well Neo, not like they'll know who you are, that is unless you use your real-name. Another "dirty trick" of mine is to find speakers that presented on a topic recently, email them, and say really enjoyed your presentation and our brief chat, "had a question"... :-)

Neo
OH I SEE WHAT YOU ARE DOING
haahhaahhaa

You mean that you see that people love to talk, and that I make it easy, right? :-)

Neo
perhaps. but at an overall picture, we are growing ~20 users per day
i think
maybe ~15
I think thats pretty good

6:36 PM
No, idea what is good, honestly SE makes it very hard to understand the health of a given site, and I gave up getting them to develop public facing stats on this years ago. Hell, Area51 has been dead for years, in my opinion.

6:53 PM
Just a reminder, but the "classic" Area51 stats are here; guessing this is where you're pulling the new user data from, though your math appears to be off "295 users / 11 days = 26.8 users per day", or you're attempt to track new users based on the last full days count.

Neo
well
We started off with 200 members in closed beta, and 5 days later we have close to 300
thats how i was counting

Eek! I come back to this room after ~15 hours, and I see a huge argument happened... sigh
(No, we are not discussing it. Please. For my sanity and yours. ;))

Neo
Dont worry chris, it should be done with.

@blunders ... tell me when A52 happens. :P
(most likely 6-8 weeks years)

Neo
A52 ?
Oh the new A51

7:04 PM
Yeah.

Neo
7:51 PM
@hichris123 do gifs post to SE like images ?

@Neo: Yes, GIFS are images, are uploaded as images, and it is okay to use them too.

Neo
good. I am thinking of a question that would benefit

Yup, but don't make it too annoying. :P

Nah, some work well; for example, here's one used to show the Pythagorean theorem.

Neo
8:06 PM

8:19 PM
Yeah, that's fine.
It just gets annoying when it's like this:
chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/89?m=1980472#1980472 ... that's... really annoying. Stop oneboxing plz! :P
:P

Neo
all of the gifs
all of the time

I can't see anymore.

Comment on expert questions: There is really a difference between questions that can be answered by experts and questions which are only answerable by research. For the latter it is better to join researchgate and talk to the people involved in the field. Sometimes questions lead to new research topics and on researchgate you can find people to collaborate on that research.

Neo
yeah
I agree
(some of my questions I think have been close to that line)
though I havent found research gate all that useful

I don't think we should censor impossible questions. If there is even a remote chance that somebody will see it and say "I need to research that", we did something well.
Researchgate works well after you have some publications and met some of your network in real life.
Collaboration anyway becomes better the longer you are in your field.

Neo
Yeah
