Anyone wanna recommend a router?

2:09 AM
@SimonSheehan: what sort of cord?
@Moshe: WRT54GL ? ;p
or..
Posted by ivoflipse on July 1st, 2011

I’ve read it countless times: flashing your router to DD-WRT to get more control over it and unlock more power. Sounds great, but how often do regular users actually end up doing this? Probably not that often. I’ve always held it off, because the risk of bricking my router never seemed worth the trouble. Besides, my networking skills are mediocre at best, so I never felt the urge to unlock even more settings! However, when I tried to open up Calibre and use its internet sharing feature, it turned out that my generic router was virtually unable to be set up properly. So today, I’m biting the bu …

Well, I just turned a spare asus eee pc into a wifi/wired router, with a 120mbps cable modem - installed and configured fedora 14 and iptables, and I'm really really please with it as it allows me to do anything, and run munin stats etc
an old 2nd hand one could be bought for very little now. Install hostapd and run with the lid down

@Journeyman Gender changer for an analog sound cable. I think I just said tue wrong thing too

2:33 AM
lol
3.5mm male to male?
(or female to male, or female to female?)
*thinks he has the parts to make one lying around ;p
@AndyLeeRobinson: not enough ports IMO

@Journeyman I don't know which is which :P

hm
its obvious!

Could you tell me which Is male and which is female?

>_>
the male connector goes INTO the female connector ;p
naturally
In electrical and mechanical trades and manufacturing, each half of a pair of mating connectors or fasteners is conventionally assigned the designation male or female. The "female" connector is generally a receptacle that receives and holds the "male" connector. The assignment is by direct analogy with genitalia and sexual intercourse; the part bearing one or more protrusions, or which fits inside the other, being designated male in contrast to the part containing the corresponding indentations, or fitting outside the other, being designated female. Extension of the analogy results in th...

@Journey I suppose I should have thought of that...: typical.

2:39 AM
lol

Well I needed a female to female but it's done now so it's over :P

ahh
those are less common

Yeah. Needed an adapter really

male male is really common. male/female isn't unless you want to switch connector sizes

Well, I'm done working on stuff for today. Slightly frustrated but slightly successful
PS2 emulators are insane to configure I've found. At least I'm doing it legally though.

2:45 AM
lol
as in using actual media, and roms dumped from a PS2 you own? ;p
hm. apparently whoever made this cd of mp3s that my mom bought, not only didn't tag them, but labelled the tracks a, b, c ....
which makes automatically converting the track numbers from the filename impossible

Yeah. Actually dumped the PS2 bios myself, running with my bought media, and using a PS2 compatible controller
The entire reason why? Because I want to record it

nice ;p

But I'm having huge issues with frame rate and sound

@JourneymanGeek agreed it doesn't have enough ports by itself, but with a 1gbit hub lying around, it was perfect to replace an old PII350 doing the same thing without wifi.

3:00 AM
@Journeyman ^

3:14 AM
sweet

Yep. Can't seem to hold steady at 50 FPS though.

3:28 AM
@SimonSheehan how'd you get that to work?
like what emulator u using?

@KronoS Pcsx2.
I had to follow this horrible tutorial on using some exploit to dump BIOS files

@SimonSheehan Ah... Thanks

Then spent hours fiddling with the graphics options to get it going

@SimonSheehan wait you had to make changes to you BIOS?

@KronoS No, to legally use an emulator I had to use a ps2 system exploit to dump it's bios files.

3:36 AM
@SimonSheehan o.O not sure I fully understand.. you had to 'nab' some actual PS2 BIOS files?

@KronoS to run the ps2 emulator they don't provide the system BIOS, just the tools to run it and plugins to get graphics, sound, control, etc. You can dump them yourself or just download it from certain... Places. I'd give you a link elsewhere ;)

@SimonSheehan oh ok got it...

@KronoS if you want to I could give you all the stuff needed to setup :P having your own PS2 games helps, loading them right off a DVD is fast!

@SimonSheehan if you don't mind send me an email with the links and stuff...
I'm looking for gaming options for the HTPC
it'd be nice to have something like that there

@KronoS What kind of hardware are you using on your HTPC?

3:45 AM
4gb ram
amd athlon dual core
nvidia 9500 gt graphics

I'm gonna have to lookup the card, one minute

ok... I've actually gotta head out.. but I'll be back on in a few hours @SimonSheehan just shoot me a 'ping' or email me..
l8rs

@KronoS alright, I'll drop an email, cya later

who runs the mail system here? I'm getting soft spf fails on transitioning domain of do-not-reply@superuser.com

3:52 AM
:) lower the suspension and spoilers...
and add spoilers

@Journeyman sometimes I wonder what they thought when they wrote it..

@SimonSheehan: thought?
damned newfangled fad, that's what it is ;p

one wonders if they'll understand the answers...

@JourneymanGeek general request... could you strive to improve the formatting and grammar in your answers? You provide a lot of useful information, but often neglect things like capitalizing the first word of a sentence, improper use of it's/its, etc, which are things that affect the quality of your posts. Those are all important factors, too :)

4:00 AM
@all: hello!

I'm trying with the capital letters ;p
XD
thanks for the pie
(chart)

Haha, yep. Thought it added some flavor to the post, if you know what I mean
Although I'm actually looking for a dupe... I think that question is one

didn't will do a super user blog post with a kill-a-watt?

i don't think so... though I kind of want a kill-a-watt myself
i'd like to blog about energy usage sometime, since i'm a bit of an energy nerd

i'm not >_>
i build for efficiency, but after that, most of my systems run all day

4:03 AM
I'm the president of my univeristy's sustainable energy group, so... yeah :)
hm... can't find the dupe. i'll leave it open for now

@KronoS you have mail ;)

@AndyLeeRobinson post a meta question, tag it as a bug.

And hello @nhinkle! Remember that @Journeyman is actually a robotic dog, programming spelling into him is tricky! And good morning @Sathya

Haha. Hi @SimonSheehan
Your post goes live soon ;)
I think in about an hour, IIRC

4:06 AM
@nhinkle I've always wondered what times they went up at :P maybe I'll stay up just to watch

My secret is out! ;p

@Journeyman loved that little 14 year old Mac article you posted on G+, was very cool.

^^ It was. its utterly pointless, convoluted, gratutious.. and oh so damned cool

has anyone played HL2?

oh
the first game, and the two other episodes

4:08 AM
so we got this fancy new instrument at work called a flow cytometer
the company's logo looks a bit like Dog from HL2

XD
it does
or a clown

@nhinkle Owner of almost every source game here. Looks very familiar :O

@Sathya - I sent a mail to team+superuser@ letting them know with a solution :-)

I love dog from the series. He's great

4:09 AM
@SimonSheehan morning

Eh? @Sathya, @AndyLeeRobinson, what's the situation?

@AndyLeeRobinson a meta post is much preferred

who runs the mail system here? I'm getting soft spf fails on transitioning domain of do-not-reply@superuser.com

o_O weird. do post on meta indeed
what are "soft spf fails" may I ask?

huh. well, do let the team know on MSU or MSO :)
I thought the new quicklinks worked in chat :/

4:12 AM
I've hardly been here 24 hours!

Very odd email

@nhinkle nope, comments only

nope @Sathya, they evidently do work in chat. apparently i just used the wrong shortcode

Also, you guys will like my blog post up in an hour

evidently there's no shortcut for meta.othersite
@SimonSheehan I already read it, and it was great :)

4:14 AM
It was just a mail from superuser saying this:
Congratulations -- you are one of the **top new Super User users for the week of Jul 18 2011!**
o:-)

i've got to go for a bit. talk to y'all later

@nhinkle Its my favorite, had too much fine writing. Cya later!

and welcome @AndyLeeRobinson. nice to have you here :)

4:15 AM
Thanks! Nice to give back some knowledge for a change...

It's a great place @Andy ;) 77 days and counting for me

Finally a home for lost geeks?

almost 600 days for me, and still going strong! :D

4:17 AM
@Sathya just straight up [meta] for MSU, but I can't get MSO to work
(oops I said I was going...)

i think i was up to 629 before i lost my steak ;p

I'm really impressed with the site - an awful lot of design and backend stuff gone into it.. wasn't conceived and written in a few days

O.o I've only been here 77 days - and haven't missed a moment since I signed up ;)

lol.. they have a writeup on the setup on IIRC the SF blog
its.. impressive

I applied for a DBA job here..

@AndyLeeRobinson there's a Database Administrators fyi

lol.
ooh, does that mean we can vote to close win7 rc related posts? ;p

ah.. pity it's windows based, so I'm out of it!

@JourneymanGeek if it applies to the final release, just remove references to RC. If it's beta/RC specific, flag it or close it

@AndyLeeRobinson: perfect example of how its always better to work with what you know ;p
@nhinkle: if i see em i will

thanks @JourneymanGeek
ok, actually going now :P
see you all later

4:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek absolutely..
I know windows of course, use it daily since V1, designed intranets for Cap Gemini 12 years ago, but .Net stuff just didn't grab me

linux is just so soft and squidgy and malleable and transparent..

my first love is hardware. I self taught myself basic server stuff cause it was cheaper to do ;p
it is

I'm also self taught.. lifelong passion

tho, i know someone who tried to deply a Apache/python/mysql app on windows XP....

4:27 AM
I know nothing about programming. But I like hardware!

send some flags, I'm bored :p

i'm quite sure it would have worked better on linux, but eh, since then... right tools for the job

also a tenacious maverick, but never really fitted in anywhere until I worked for a social network

@SimonSheehan: i'm overdue for my next desktop
@AndyLeeRobinson: eh, i wish i could find a job. I'll be 30 by the time i get my degree, with no real job experience ;p

much happier working from home than warming a seat in a cubicle somewhere

4:28 AM
@Journeyman im always overdue, doesn't stop me from learning though :D

@SimonSheehan: built my current box in 07 ;p

I'm 48 now, and still wondering when my career starts...

the longest i keep my desktops as the main system is 5 years ;p

@Journeyman in other news, hard drives! db.tt/LUJrrKx

4:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek, I think qualifications don't count so much.. you can prove yourself here with your knowledge, and gain a track record

@Sathya best question today ;)

@Sathya already at work I take it?

rationalsurvivability... nice.. hadoop is on my list of things to play with

@SimonSheehan yep
I'm surprised there's no mention of highscalability or Scoble's twitter list

4:40 AM
Very productive working I see ;)

I found meta.. but still for questions, no info feedback
anyway, I think dns and spf oversights are best reported privately
I like this chat system. is it available as a package?

yum install SU-chat

hehe
@AndyLeeRobinson actually, nope

I run a socnet using ejabberd, and it is horrible..
needs upgrading to something useful

@Sathya is there anywhere that says how many edits I have done? My profile seems to display just about everything but..

Thanks!

@Sathya, ok thx.. but it gives a good model (similar to qirc)

This week at Super User, MaxMackie asked “How far will you get with a ‘rm -rf /’” ?  Within minutes of the post, it had not only my attention, but others as well. It had 39 upvotes just eight short hours later, and answers and thoughts poured in.

We’ve all heard the stories – and please, don’t try this at home! rm -rf has caused a LOT of problems with accidental usage in the past. It is a linux/unix command which erases all files recursively, and won’t stop to ask if you’re sure. Adding the extra / has it start at the root directory –  …

Looks familiar! :)

@SimonSheehan fyi, Clippy will auto post each blog plost in here

@Sathya oh okay. Didn't see it so I did, was excited to share the post ;)

@SimonSheehan ok, no probs, just tellin'. It'll take about 10-15 minutes after the post goes out

could mention the pitfalls of rm -rf . too, for windows novices on linux...

There he is!

Nice article!

Thanks! I had way too much fun doing rm -rf multiple times in a VM

hehe.. gratuitous linuxide...
as I mentioned earlier today, doing chown -R andy:andy * after mc dropped me at / on a production server wasn't much fun

5:13 AM
but not as catastrophic.. at least it kept running, and its complaints could be fixed in order of priority
still took a few hours to repair manually from a reference system
only got halfway through /home before I aborted, but /bin /boot /dev /etc needed work
the worst one was that /bin/su loses its setuid flag.. so noone else could get root

Well I'm off to sleep, cya later everyone

g'night/morning .. csao....

@SimonSheehan: i saw that.. ;p

rm -rf / will also take out mounted pendrives, usb drives, external ntfs drives, backups, and probably mounted nfs drives too, if no root squash
real horror!

lol
@AndyLeeRobinson: its pretty much the single most oh-shitworthy thing you can do
also, in singapore qualifications are everything ><

5:25 AM
absolutely... find a bridge and jump time...
so best not to keep backup drives mounted just-in-case
found that in Hungary too.. need a diploma to say that you are qualified to sweep the streets

I dont buy it.. can do it or not..

yeah
eh, backups on the same system... are useless

against an rm -rf / yes, but not if the root fs has a head crash

or against serious, very spectacular hardware failure
what if there's a lightning strike and you're unlucky enough to lose more than the PSU?

5:39 AM
yes, lightning is particularly nasty... but if the server is next to you, then perhaps your data is the least of your problems!
I just replied to the IE6 post... should stir things up a bit
that f'ing browser has caused billions of hours of lost productivity in working around css bugs

lol
its the 'specific version' thing that bothers me ;p

client sounds a total anally retentive asshole
but shouldn't jump to conclusions without all the facts.. still can't imagine what the barrier to upgrading could be
I just noticed the date on that post...

5:59 AM
damn..
community must have bumped it up ;p

well, might be some news if the client did eventually upgrade

1 hour later…
7:14 AM
morning all

5 hours later…
12:00 PM
Afternoon now i believe

indeed it is

And not long till i can get home :)

2 hours later…
miffed that I can't express a strong opinion

2:10 PM
this isn't a discussion board.

2:27 PM
Morning everyone
Running that query on SU to see what we get now
Apparently 81 potential spam users.
@Sathya How do I go about flagging a duplicate?
Or marking as a possible duplicate

@SimonSheehan flag -> doesn't belong here -> Duplicate

@SimonSheehan assuming you're <3k, you go flag -> doesn't belong here -> exact dupe

Okay.

And there we go, tada
Thanks @Sathya and @DMA57361, more work for you guys until I can VTC ;)

2:37 PM
cheers @Simon

Q: Java in my car??

Chris Burt-Brown "Java is found everywhere -- on mobile phones, desktop computers, Blu-ray Disc players, set top boxes, and even in your car." What cars use the Java runtime?

3 hours later…
5:27 PM
congrats on 10k to @slhck
6

Thanks @Sathya! :) Now let's see what I can do with that ;D

Should go on a vicious upvoting spree on all my answers so I can join you!

@DarthAndroid I know you're probably joking, but do be careful - you don't want the system to automatically take away all your points for vote fraud

Ooh, does it detect things like that automatically?

@DarthAndroid yep

6:17 PM
(And yes, I was joking, though I realize tone of voice doesn't carry through text like it does in my head. )

Yea. The specifics of how the detection works aren't public, not even to moderators, but basically, if you get an unusual amount of upvotes from a specific user, then the system removes them and recalcs your rep. Sometimes it'll take away even more than what that user gave you, as happened to me once when somebody voted up too many of my answers trying to be nice

I think I had the same happen for me once
got a ton of upvotes on all my answers one day
those tools are shiny!

7:19 PM
hahaha. congrats @slhck :)
now you have even more tools at your disposal to help us out :)

Those are really useful @nhinkle!
:D
the background queries seem to take a while to load though

some of the queries can be pretty slow

7:33 PM
@slhck Congrats, I thought you already had 10k ages ago ;)

@SimonSheehan Haha, thanks.. nope, I haven't been answering that much for a couple of weeks :)

@slhck You do lots of good editing and commenting though, makes up for it :)

thank you.. it's just that I don't know that much about Windows so I wouldn't even dare to answer a question unless i know I'm right, and there are people out there who have way more experience
So have used your recent edit privileges yet? :)

Oh a bit here and there, but not enough really. I'd like to start doing it more since i've really slowed down on my answering :)
Although it's very nice to not have to wait for approval

Yeah that makes it somewhat easier!

7:43 PM
I also ran into times where I waited for approval, and someone else edited it before I got approved :P

it happens to me on Stack Overflow all the time
At some point I just stopped editing the cr*p over there, it almost feels useless :P

Haha. Well Super User and Gaming are the only two im on, and their not nearly as busy as SO, so it's not too big of an issue ;)

So what are you up to @SimonSheehan?

@slhck Reading The final Harry potter book... For the thousandth time probably :P It's quite good.
I spend a great deal of time reading usually

Well that's good! Haven't read a book in ages.. the last time when I had a 15hr flight

7:54 PM
Haha. I've actually managed to acquire a full bookshelf of just books I own.

Neat :D Mine's filled with books from my girlfriend that don't fit in hers

xD It's a nice break from computers.

it's also definitely better for your eyes I guess

Oh I'm not so sure. Staring at small text still, usually I get my glasses if I'm staring at it for a long time

Mh... Sometimes my eyes get all dry from reading real printed text. Probably means I'm just a hopeless nerd.

8:00 PM
I can feel my contacts drying up now.. Driving kills it to read signs at a distance :P

Heh! Sounds too familiar!
Can't use contacts anymore though

Oh? Why not?

I have... this thing (not as extreme as in the picture).. where my cornea is getting thinner and thinner.. so wearing contacts really hurts.
Which is kinda lame because the only therapy is contacts :/

Ouch. Can't possibly do laser eye surgery one day?
I can't see half a meter away without glasses

Laser doesn't work in that case.. I had a different type of surgery which involves UV light treatment, that was kinda awkward, but it went quite well

8:07 PM
Well that's good. The miracles of science!

Oh, gotta go, time for some cooking! Have fun with reading @SimonSheehan :P

Cya later @slhck

Psh contacts. I just told my eyes to shape up or I'd disown them. Now I'm back to 20/20!

Haha. I tried that, but their a little rebellious

8:29 PM
can anyone here school me on the difference between newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139279 and newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139280, besides the heat spreader?

well one's got a dual rank and the other is quad
also one has parity
> Sometimes memory modules are designed with two or more independent sets of DRAM chips connected to the same address and data buses; each such set is called a rank

I think they both have parity according to the datasheets

A DIMM or dual in-line memory module, comprises a series of dynamic random access memory integrated circuits. These modules are mounted on a printed circuit board and designed for use in personal computers, workstations and servers. DIMMs began to replace SIMMs (single in-line memory modules) as the predominant type of memory module as Intel P5-based Pentium processors began to gain market share. The main difference between SIMMs and DIMMs is that DIMMs have separate electrical contacts on each side of the module, while the contacts on SIMMs on both sides are redundant. Another differe...
as far as parity goes:
RAM parity determines whether a random access memory unit stores a parity bit for error detection purposes. Non-parity RAM does not include a parity bit, and parity RAM does. Parity RAM requires one additional bit to be stored with each byte of information, requiring memory modules to store 9, rather than 8, bits for every byte. The purpose of parity RAM is to detect when a memory error (corrupt bit or bits) has occurred. Undetected memory errors can have varying results; from simply annoying to catastrophic. In the case of the home PC where data integrity is often perceived to be of littl...
@Radu didn't look like that.. but you might be right...
that was just a quick glance that I did

thanks, any idea of the performance implications of quad vs dual?

@Radu TBH I just looked those up and don't know a thing about them...

8:37 PM
that's okay :P

I'm assuming that quad = better... but that's literally a gut guess and nothing of experience or knowledge

I'm just wondering if the $70 difference can be justified
I suspect it can't

9:36 PM
If a post is an undisclosed advertisement, but useful (a for-pay service that does what the user is asking for), should it be reported for spam?

@DarthAndroid Which one are you talking about?

Oh, zapped anyways!

Damn
missed out on my potential flag weight

I guess in that case, it's pure spam.. heck, even the user was named "GmailBackup"
Remember that spam works because it appears useful to some people :P

9:39 PM
True, and normally I would have, it was just that the question was about backing up gmail, and the flag dialog reads "undisclosed advertising, and is not useful or relavent"

Hmm, that's true. Might be misleading. But still the intentions were wrong.

Will keep that in mind. Thanks :)

10:02 PM
My gawd what's up with that question's answers?

10:30 PM
Hello?

10:47 PM
@slhck "in vietnam" lol

Well I'm sure there are a lot of flags flying around now :P
