My flag weights starting to get messy. 518.8. Haha.

12:36 AM
eheh
i was wondering about that at one point

@KronoS Generally speaking, quad core is slower on a per-core basis than it's dual-core and single-core counterparts (that is changing). Older applications and games that are only optimized for single/dual core processors may suffer, albeit only slightly if you have a newer model. There will be a net increase in performance due to the fact that each process can be allocated to a core which will handle it most effectively.

4:50 AM
@SimonSheehan hi!

Hows it going @Sathya?
Took me a while to see your message :P

@SimonSheehan going good..

Good good. Looks like I'm off to sleep though, have a good day @Sathya

5:11 AM
thanks, good night @SimonSheehan

oh hello, what's this then?
10kers can access info about the new anonymous feedback - meta.stackoverflow.com/q/99370

some interesting stuff in there
the question with the most positive anonymous feedback on our site was zero-voted, wow O_o

8:20 AM
@DMA57361 yep.. interesting trends there

Morning everyone
A lot of old posts are getting bumped up...

2:43 PM
@SimonSheehan is there? been a bit busy this last hour or so, you got any examples?

Q: How do I run a program in Ubuntu using Wine that requires JRE?

I have an application that requires JRE to run on Windows. I have now migrated to Ubuntu and am trying to run the same application using WINE. However I get the error: "No Java Found". Any ideas how I can run the application?

@DMA57361 Just one of many popping up lately. Its nice that Gareth does the edits but...some posts are really old.

ah, yeah
it's a bit of an awkward situation - because the edits are beneficial but at the same time get in the way a little bit

Yeah. Like I went to go answer the question then went "Oh wait...09'"

well do feel free to answer old questions if you have the answer

2:53 PM
there's even badges for it as well, you know ;)

I've seen, might be a good one to pickup :)
Also, just upgraded my internet, finally!

@SimonSheehan from and to?

@DMA57361 From 10mbps down, 512kb/s up, 60GB bandwidth limit, to 25mbps down, 1mbps up, 125GB limit

oh nice, but what speeds does your link actually work at?

What do you mean by that?

2:56 PM
well I have an 8mbps connection, but the link only holds at ~4.5
line noise, distance from the exchange and so on

Oh no, it actually holds at that speed, its nice. I've got a 19ms ping from the server's in toronto.

oh very nice then

Yeah, it's quite nice. Getting off the 60GB limit was my biggest issue, i've been going over since January 2010

that's a lot of downloading :P

Haha, well it's 4 people in one home constantly using it, and some people like YouTube a lot, so it starts to mount up :P

2:59 PM
yeah
I got a link without a limit specifically to avoid having to worry about it

Well in my area there actually isn't an unlimited provider. There is 1-2 towns over, but not here

ISP does traffic shaping instead (I think...), but I'd rather have slow than expensive

Good point. Well i'm out for a bit, cya later @DMA57361

cya

3:50 PM
any of ya'll know nginx config? @JourneymanGeek

4:22 PM
lol @bckbck

@Sathya was testing out the "easter eggs"
15
Q: What Easter Eggs do the chat sites have?

MosheAccording to @balpha, he SE chat sites may have individual Easter eggs, depending on the site. If you find them, please post. Edit: Because it's so easy to make this stuff up, a screenshot as proof would be nice. (Although Photoshop ain't that hard either...)

@bckbck not to be taken in it's literal sense ;) just say you want to find clippy.

Feel free to weigh in:

Q: How do I interpret the specification of memory (RAM)?

KronoSWhen looking at memory there are a few specifications that I don't understand and was hoping to have clarification on. What do these terms mean, and how do they affect the systems performance? Feel free to give technical data and answers to these, but not specific to the specs that I list as ex...

@Sathya heheheh

my curry-sense tells me it'll be on the blog soon @Kronos

4:30 PM
@Sathya ;)

I'm also fairly certain it's a dupe

Personally I think Crysis 2 has the best Easter eggs ;)

@Sathya I tried looking, but couldn't find any...
should've asked the search.su ninja @Sathya

Great little Easter egg ;)

Q: How does RAM frequency and latency differ? How does it affect performance?

Niels WillemsI have a question regarding two specifications of RAM memory, the amount of Mhz and the latency timings (example: 9-9-9-24). Which one of the two is most important for system performance and why? Also what exactly is the difference between the two?

@KronoS ;)

4:33 PM
@SimonSheehan they look like they're rabbit humping more than dancing...

@KronoS o.o
Never quite saw it that way, but eh.

Q: Why are there different clockspeeds and timings on RAM?

EikernI don't consider myself a novice when it comes to building computers or computer hardware in general, but I've never taken the time to fully understand RAM. Can somebody tell me why there is a need for different clockspeeds when it comes to RAM? And what the timings are good for. Thanks

@KronoS Did you try out any of that emulation stuff yet?

@Sathya knew you would find it... though mine asks for more detail on the matters
@SimonSheehan not yet... working on another blog post first... that's on the agenda for soon

yeah @KronoS, that's why I haven't closed it :

4:35 PM
@KronoS Oh great. I'm still tweaking so ill share any finds with you

Also looking into getting a dif TV since my rear projection TV is a beast and takes up a lot of space

@SimonSheehan emulation?

@Sathya Game emulation on a PC

@SimonSheehan thanks! lemme know what all you get

Consoles mostly

4:35 PM
ok

Got a picture, moment..
Metal Gear solid 2, PS2

I'd tread lightly on that. it's not strictly legit

@Sathya Ah, but i am doing a 100% legal way!
Dumping my own BIOS files from the PS2, and using my own discs
Which were all purchased
Making it legal :)

@SimonSheehan bios is from your PS2?

@Sathya Yes.

4:37 PM
cool.

@Sathya that's what I said...

Indeed.
Also, Spyro the dragon, PS1 game
The controller is my favourite :P
So yeah, finding my way around things.
@Sathya @KronoS Essentially as long as you own it, its legal.

@SimonSheehan own the system or own the games?

@KronoS Well both really. Like with PC games, torrents were started originally not for piracy, but for people who had lost the discs. As long as you originally legally purchased and owned it, you can download it again.
Although in Canada pretty much all legal so...

no one gives a damn about legality and such here (in India)

4:50 PM
Haha. We have radio announcements encouraging you to report family members of piracy. But were the #1 downloader of illegal content in the world

@SimonSheehan radio announcements to report... family?! Wow...

@KronoS "Do you know someone commuting acts of piracy? Report them to the CRTC and know your doing your part"
Usually something along those lines.

Wow...

@SimonSheehan wth O_o

Except no one likes the CRTC (Canadian radio and television commission) Because they only care about big business. And who reports friends anyway?

4:54 PM
@SimonSheehan wait... canada is the #1 downloader of illegal content?
I would've thought it was brazil or swedan
or china for that matter

@KronoS I saw it on slashdot one day. Was surprised too

well, taken my spin on the speed wave (in the stars on the right)... I'm third from last >.<

Ouch. I did above average somehow

I might get a little bit more if I made the test cleaner (ie, I had various web things up, wife's on her laptop, etc) but it's probably more representative of "what I see" when on the web this way

5:18 PM
Well gonna go pickup a new modem, be back soon

2 hours later…
7:44 PM
I just added to this superuser.com/questions/295785/mass-dropping-of-mysql-tables which some people might find useful - I hate typing lists if there is an easier way!
it's about how to drop hundreds of selected mysql tables automatically using grep

4 hours later…
11:35 PM
@satya : sadly, no. So far been running nothing but apache

I hardly get apache running, nginx sounds terribly tricky ;)

nginx is supposed to have some advantages

I hear lighttpd is useful for sites

same basic idea ;p
