We want software recommendation questions, not polls. Which means we want questions that are fundamentally about how to accomplish a task. Which means our questions belong on SU and the like.
This site exists because SU and friends don't do enough moderation, and questions that involve a product recommendation require more moderation than average.

i want to ask for a software recommendation
user58869
i am looking for an addon updater for os x that's like the one you can get for windows from the curse.com website, because they stopped supporting the os x version of their addon updater and it doesn't seem to work on the version of os x that i'm using...

...so i am trying to decide if i should ask for a software recommendation on the software recommendation site or post a question on another site asking if there are ways to get the unsuported os x version of the curse client to work on the most recent version of os x
user58869
is this something that i should post on the meta site first to get clarification?
You can ask for an alternative here. Be sure to explain what you're using curse for, don't assume in your question that people have heard of it. We have a meta question on that
I have software X and I like it. However, I want an extra feature that X doesn't provide. Or I want to run X on a different platform. How can I ask for an alternative to X?
@Alex asking how to get the client to work again would be a valid question for Ask Different, I presume
You can ask both. If you do you should link the questions to each other, as they're different means of accomplishing the same thing.

yes... what's interesting is that i could actually ask what amount to the same question on two different sites, but they would be two different questions really
