@danijelc About your answer here: It's an awesome answer, but it doesn't really fit the question. It would be great if you would ask a new question with the same requirements, except asking for Linux software. Then answer it with your current answer.

12:59 AM
@Gilles You pinged me in the comments, but you deleted the answer before I could respond. I've written about that question in this meta answer, and I'm wondering if perhaps the question should be edited to better fit the OPs original intent and the valid answer that was deleted could be restored.

@BenMiller Oh, sorry, I forgot that this would notify the author of the answer but rob you of the notification
> @BenMiller No: Windows is listed as a requirement, other platforms as a bonus. This mention of Puddletag should be an addendum to your answer (especially as Puddletag advertises itself as a Linux equivalent of Mp3tag). Since this answer doesn't purport to answer the question, I'm deleting it. danijelc, if you want to recommend running Puddletag under Cygwin or otherwise under Windows, edit instructions on how to achieve this and flag for undeletion.
Given that Puddletag advertises itself as a Linux alternative to Windows's Mp3tag, it's best to have a single answer mentioning both anyway

@Gilles Windows is only listed as a requirement now, but it was not a requirement from the OP. The question was worded poorly, but based on the OPs comments and meta question, it is clear now that he can use any OS, and simply prefers Windows. My meta answer explains in more detail.

@BenMiller I know the question went through multiple stages. The last edit by the OP did say “works on Windows and is free”

@Gilles Puddletag may advertise itself as an alternative to Mp3tag, but that doesn't make it the same program. I rolled back the edit to my answer, because I don't personally use Puddletag and can't recommend it. I believe it is generally accepted that only one program should be recommended per answer.

@BenMiller er, no, it is not generally accepted
On the contrary, I recommend a single answer per poster
especially in the case where there's one program for Windows and one for Linux, it makes no sense to offer them in different answers
they aren't competing solutions, they're alternative solutions depending on clear external constraints

1:15 AM
@Gilles Actually, the last edit by the OP said "works on Windows and is free, but I am still curious to know about other OS and non-free applications." This is awkwardly worded and ambiguous, but based on the OPs meta question, it now appears that it is being misinterpreted to mean that he could not use a Windows solution. If the question is now edited to be more clear and inline with the OPs intent (based on his meta question), would the deleted answer be restored?

He's still saying he wants a Windows application in the meta question

@Gilles The problem is they really aren't the same program. The linux program offers a function that the Windows program doesn't have that would be useful to the OPs task.

I guess it would make sense for the question to say “I have both Windows and Linux and I don't mind which one I use for the task”

@Gilles And that is exactly what he says in the meta question.

@FranckDernoncourt If a Linux solution is ok, edit your question to state it clearly, then flag to have the Linux answer undeleted

So, please suggest some games. and also, we can't use Bluestacks because it does not work on our PC (we dont h...

I wonder if this is really Utkarsh's dad

@Caleb, wow, you even updated the link for me. Thanks!

@JourneymanGeek

@kalina: yes?

we already have a to use for these kinds of things
well, or improve or accept and edit it
<3

Actually, I'm kinda iffy over the question itself ;p

well obviously any further action is up to you
:P

Well
Why don't I ping the editor and ask? ;p

9:30 AM
yeah why don't you do that
:P

Morning'

@Caleb: Ping ^^

@Fractaliste o/

I don't even need to use a superping, I'm dissapointed.

@JourneymanGeek The question is worse than iffy, but we're going to want a tag for questions dealing with distro recommendation as its a pretty specialized field of interest.

9:32 AM
@Caleb: Thats a different issue. I'd close if it someone flagged or closevoted it (hint hint)
I do think its a slightly meta tag - I mean, if you're using linux, you're invariably using a distribution, right?
What's that add over the linux tag, and how would we handle the tag wiki?

@Caleb we have
we don't need a separate tag for linux distros, just use +

9:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek The linux tag is going to be over-run with reqs for apps that run on linux. The expertise for that is not the same as for linux itself, and more than the sum of two parts.
(I argued a similar case somewhere, looking for that...)
@kalina That does not enable the sort of user who would be a distro expert to follow their area of expertise.

>_>
Is there such a thing as a distro expert?

@Caleb considering that probably 99% of the questions that get tagged with will relate to Linux, I don't really see this as much of a counter argument. Anybody who is an "expert" in Linux distributions could just follow this tag

I think I'd approve the edit, but you're going to have to handle the tag wiki if I do. ;p

A: We should NOT have hybrid tags

CalebI think this would need to be examined on a case by case basis, and sometimes there is a purpose to the hybrid tags. I think hybrid tags need to be evaluated on a case by case basis. Do they identify a field of expertise or interest that is not of fully of interest to one or more of the compon...

we can't use for all operating systems but we can use for linux

9:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yes. And it's not the same as a linux user that knows a bunch of apps. And those guys may NOT be interested in following a behemoth like
@kalina Of course you can't. We're talking about taxonomy here. We're trying to split questions up based on meaningful areas of common expertise so that they get the right attention and can be found when needed. The point isn't to bring everything under one roof. Experts in picking Windows versions or in choosing between tablet ROM's are not going to be the same guys that know when to use one distro over another.
If you don't see or agree with my point we should probably take this to meta.
I realize its not a cut and dry case, but I think it's important enough that I'll make my case there if anybody really thinks I'm missing something.
The real issue is that it's going to be rare that questions in this space are not either cock fights or gorilla vs shark :-/

10:16 AM
Jumping in I'm pro the "linux-distributions" tag, and contra "pressing" that into a common "operating-systems". To compare, see what a bunch of graphics/image tags we have which are much more specialized. Considering Linux distros often focus on special needs, such a tag makes much sense IMHO.

As it stands, the answer to this question is either "none of them" because it really might not suit your use-case at all or "most any of them" because most major distributions these days fulfill these criteria equally well. There is not enough information about your users' workflow or how you would like to admin these boxes (rolling release? updates handled by users? re-image and distribute disks from scratch periodically?) or your other preferences to make an informed recommendation. — Caleb 18 secs ago
@JourneymanGeek I don't see anything that is mod flag worthy (i.e. closure is part of the normal life cycle of a question like this not something a mod intervention is required for), but I did VtC.

@Caleb Just upvoted that comment – you beat me to writing something similar :)

@Caleb: my VTCs would be an instalkill, so I'm a bit gunshy for now.

@JourneymanGeek Do you think any attempts to answer that question right now are likely to result in a answer field that is easy to rank based an suitability of the solution (rather than favorite of the voter) and that will draw towards a conclusive resolution rather that become a fly-trap for everybody adding answers to defend their favorite distro? On what basis would you moderate flags that come in an answers the the question as it stands?

@JourneymanGeek As Caleb placed his VTC, it's in the queue for everyone above 500 rep (which currently means 27 users). Assuming 10%+ checking that, you can join the Q at pos #3 or #4 then, so it's not a "sledge hammer", but a normal one :)

10:29 AM
@Caleb if we're going with these questions shouldn't also be tagged , then

@Izzy: That would be ideal, yes.
or, XD. another mod can instahold it

@JourneymanGeek But than you should kick in. 27 possible voters is not enough to be sure it gets nailed otherwise :)

@Izzy: I would kick in at one or two in that case.

@JourneymanGeek Oh, too late :)

;p
Still getting used to this

10:31 AM
Gilles already did :)

Actually, there was this conversation on RA where someone had a older computer, a younger kid, and was trying to find a distro to throw on it (the computer, not the kid)
Re-framed, it would probably be a better example of that sort of question

Who did I piss off over at U&L? I haven't even been there much lately and just got serially downvoted across some of my better received answers.

@Caleb contrariwise, distribution-choice is the only tag I ignore on U&L

@kalina That I would probably agree with, but not positive.

@Caleb only on U&L? I'd bet on a Christ.SE user who's trying to hurt you where (in his view) you can't retaliate

10:34 AM
@Gilles Doesn't that bolster my point that it is a distinct area of [dis]interest?

@Caleb yes

@Gilles Yes, only on U&L. And you might be right.

but I don't think is good, I prefer a more general tag.

@Gilles this is sad
@Gilles \o/

shrug

10:36 AM

Or do we want to separate the OS choice questions (which are more likely to have real arguments) from the Linux distro choice questions (which are more likely to be “whichever”)?

I don't see anything in common except the timing and the fact that they are mine :)

@JourneymanGeek well outside of my area of expertise

How do you notice these things anyway?

10:37 AM
I have no idea about kerebros either ;p
Oh wait, you edited it. My bad

@Gilles Not sure for the "whichever" part, Gilles. Name me a good distro for musicians. Or for kids. There are quite specific ones.

Waiiiit a second

@Gilles Something like that. I think they are pretty distinct.

@JourneymanGeek I was thinking whether I should throw in my Trac answer again. IMHO supports Git as backend as well. Not being too familiar with Git, I'm not sure if it would fit the other requirements.

See the MSO post above. I think it's a case of a hybrid tag being more useful that the sum of its parts.

10:40 AM
@Izzy: Look at that link... ;p

@JourneymanGeek Huh? Link?
Checking...

"Brought to you by: nicolas_raoul"

@JourneymanGeek Which one? That SF link from your previous post?

Ouch, we're talking about different Qs, sorry...

10:42 AM
@Izzy Git support in Trac is dodgy and the DVCS workfow of merge requests that the question specifically asks about is pretty much something you have to do on your own.

@Caleb Thanks! That was the kind of answer I was looking for. So no link to Trac there :)

Just my opinion (but I do admin 20+ Trac installations on which to base said opinion).

@Caleb Beat me again. I have 2 Multi-Env installations (3 if counting my old server)

@Undo I believe that OP question was edited wrongly in this case. As I see it, we shouldn’t delete part of question but eventually reword it in better way. OP was asking for windows solution but would accept other OS too as he clearly stated latter in his meta.
@Undo I'm not disputing deleted answer, after all you guys need to mederate site and make it as good as possible. What I'm stating the original question could be interpreted in different way that’s all

@danijelc that clout belongs on my and Caleb's heads. We felt the question being much too broad (A or NOT A, B or NOT B), and needed some more strictness. We tried our best to figure the user's real need. Unfortunately our edits crossed with your answer.

Woman slapped across the face with a large fish, police outraged <-- for some reason I am unable to read this article without laughing...

12:35 PM
@Izzy Yup agree on that quite borderline to broad question

@kalina: I don't trout that

@Izzy that was more or less good explanation of why i consider it can be interpreted differently
4
A: Do I have to ask one question per OS?

Ben MillerYou can ask one question and include multiple OS options as possibilities. The problem with this question is the way you originally worded it was a little ambiguous: works on Windows and is free, but I am still curious to know about other OS and non-free applications. This could be t...

@danijelc I understand the question could have been interpreted in the way you propose, the problem was that was going to make far too broad a question. Hence why I tried to channel the OP into the other reading that would make a focused enough question for the answer field to not be a mess-in-the-making.
Those exactly highlights why this is a problem: "but the two answers you have now are both valid and distinct". The way you would have us redirect this question, a plurality of completely different answers might all be equally valid. The voting will stop reflecting a good recommended solution for a particular use-case and start reflecting everybody's favorite way to manage music on any platform. This question could be read two ways but one of those ways leads to a mess and one offers a way to keep it tidy. — Caleb 31 secs ago

@Caleb yep getting your point, not necessary agreeing but I'm not disputing at all. I mean at end we need to filter such questions in best of ways to avoid mess and keep quality as high as possible

@Fractaliste I don't think that will let up either. The problem I suspect our attrition rate will be high too.

"attrition"?

The site is still young
These number are not really representative yet
But the number of user is quite impressive

> a reduction in the number of employees or participants that occurs when people leave because they resign, retire, etc., and are not replaced

@Caleb oh... for some reason I was seeing it as militar term

@Caleb Yay!

1:52 PM
@Caleb Congrats!
I need +61 to "work the flags" :)

@Izzy I just cleared out four VLQ flags ;(
It's going to be nice having someone else in the queue that can make suggestions and whatnot.

@Undo Cleared out? As helpful – or "content lost"?

@Izzy As in helpful and content lost/deleted.
Can I edit the comments on meta.softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/a/662/46 to make them less... caps-locky?

@Undo Definitely! Looking forward to fill that gap. Shouldn't take that long. Either later today, or tomorrow, I guess.
@Undo Look whom they are from.
I'd say go for it.

Yay!

1:56 PM
Q/days will not be our problem... apparently

Well, I was tempted to say "remove all CAPS", instead of replacing them by lowercase...

There, now my eyes don't burn :D

@Undo Yupp! Looks much cleaner now :) Good job!

Thanks ;)

@JourneymanGeek I was going to suggest Handbrake.

handbrake should work

I see no reason it wouldn't.

handbrake nope

yap
dvd have protectiosn and handbrake cant read it

it can if you have VLC installed

idk on win
on Linux u need a lib for that but yes with workarround is possible to rip DVD than use handbrake

hmm
and blah, as I said, too late at night ;p
Maybe I'll try tommorrow
unless someone else answers. I am cool with that ;p

ISO wouldn’t be best way but generally u can rip and convert

IIRC VLC can also play ISOs straight up
without any conversion

3:01 PM
yap il maybe reply latter aws too busy now

ya ;p
Its almost bedtime for me XD

see VLC and handbrake together can do that just last time i done it like idk yers agoo would need to look in that
nite and latters

user58869
@danijelc i've used a program called ripit in the past, it copies the whole dvd into a folder, then you can play that with vlc or use handbrake to create an mp4

user58869
ripit is for os x

yes
On Windows idk sicne im not running win for long time
on Linux u basically rip dvd than use handbrake or vlc to convert
VLC is kinda slow to convert at least slover than handbrake
vlc it self need libdvdcss libdvdread4 libdvdnav4 installed to decode DVD at least on ubuntu
idk for other distros since i mostly play audio vide stuff only on ubuntu
gotta run
latters
Actually handbrake in theory shuld be able to rip if libdvdread4 is installed, will test latter

@danijelc for your Flickr thingy: Have you checked the addons available to Gwenview? I remember there was something with Flickr integration. But not using those services, I'm not sure how far that goes.

Q: Are hosting recommendation requests on-topic?

UndoI just saw this question: Looking for hosting for Laravel It's asking for a hosting recommendation. Are these on topic here?

^ Opinions wanted.

@Undo that's a service recommendation, not a software recommendation

That's what I was thinking too.
I suppose we should close it as off topic,
There is a new (beta) SO site for "software recommendation" Q&A - softwarerecs.stackexchange.com. Based on this (meta.softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/44/…), your question might be on-topic there. But it is definitely off-topic here. — Stephen C 24 mins ago
^ Aha! So that's what happened!

@Undo i'm waiting for stack exchange 3.0 where there is no distinction between sites, you just ask a question and it gets assigned to the correct place for you

@danijelc That's what I figured meanwhile with some Google-Fu as well. Sorry for the false alarm.

5:30 PM
@Alex Yup. I hope one of those places is /dev/null
3

@Alex The mobile apps actually take a small step towards that direction with the "select a site" input when asking a question

no worries @Izzy See this downloading from Flickr is kinda pain in ass thing

user58869
@ventic that's interesting, does it make suggestions of which one to choose?

Not yet at least

No, not really. And I doubt it will.

5:32 PM
It should be possible considering MSO is doing suggested tags already

user58869
@Undo when you ask a question on any site it makes suggestions down the side of possible answers. so i imagine the technology is already there to enable such a thing as suggested site

Oh, huh.
It does expect people to apply some thought, though, which they don't always do.

meh, I would say that if this cause so much trouble lets just ban anything you can't run localy

@Undo to make it fast off topic, too broad and very low quality all in one

@danijelc Oh – that's a completely different case then :)

5:48 PM
@Undo its like asking i would like to watch movies and i heard VLC, BS player and SMPlayer are good which one should i use

Yup

@Undo Yuck "I don't understand what I'm doing. Can you help me for better confusion?"

I didn't have a question about whether it should be closed, it's more about the on-topicness of the core question.

@Izzy yap hence i need something for easy downloading and removing my "art"

@danijelc You mean, we should have kept that as "bad example"?

5:50 PM
@Undo idk for me off topic since is about service and not software

Yeah

@Izzy maybe idk I'm not experienced enough active here only like 21 day is all and occasionally on AU

And earlier there was a boring closed w/o comment flag.

I made few when i woke up just sayin'

@Undo Hm, so who dealt with my "obsolete" flags on several comments then?

A mod
I wish 10kers could deal with comment flags.

@Undo Ah! There are more of them then... #D

5:55 PM
Yup :D

Good! I would feel bad raising flags 24/7 otherwise.
Apart from the fact I couldn't even do that, as I'd be running out of flags after 1/4

Journeyman handles most of the flags when I'm asleep. I handle most of the flags when Gilles and Journeyman are both asleep/out. If Gilles and I are both awake, Gilles ends up handling most of the flags because I sit here and think about them for too long.

@Undo Oh you used to develop with Laravel ? I started to learn it on january !

@Fractaliste That was a copy-paste of a deleted question

Nah, that givz 2 pointz

Yeah! Tools link there. Hm, empty room – no flagz...
@Undo Ouch. I was on the edge recommending a mig from ASE today. Why didn't I do that? Seeing this one, my candidate would have been a... "shiny little thing?"

It's a good question, I just want the precedent to be, "You ping someone before you migrate anything to SR"

@Undo I neither downvoted nor VTCd it. Only seeing it reminded me of the one I VTC'd on ASE today. I was really close to request a migration, as it was a good one. Guess next time I just do it (quality given, of course).

softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/1721/… Are we going to replace google search engine ? :/

And yes, that's what I like about Seth. He always comes asking first. And when it tends to be a "no", he asks again whether we could give the user an advice at least.
Giving the best to both ends – a clear win-win. I'm proud I voted for him on AU :)

yup :D

@Undo something for ya again

Awww there's a VLQ flag in the queue, but it's custom and thus @Izzy can't see it ;(

and another VLQ :) maybe @izzy can see this one

I was already on it. Left my comment for now (as the A is salvable if the poster will put in some effort).
Tricky thing: "Please describe how it meets the OPs req... wait: which requirements?"
Our old trouble: Answer matches question. But question is LQ...

yes exactly no requirements, and well to me looks fishy since OP is new user to SE in general
got reply and accepted all in like 10 minutes

Yupp. I thought something similar.
Gives no requirements, receives an exactly matching answer, tests it, finds it fitting his needs, and accepts the answer. Within 10 minutes. Wow. Either very effective, a wonder, or a fake...

exactly

OK, sorry folks, gotta go... BBL :)

Finally bothered to stylize the ticker feed at the top left as well

Cya!

Oooh shiny

I think I want it less grey... brb

@Undo I upvoted your close vote suggestion just because of intent - you still need to word it better, maybe a more generic thing pointing to a page listing the things outside of our scope... like along the lines of 'this question has been closed as it is off topic as defined in our [scope](link)' or w/e
I also updated the documentation thing on meta

Q: Overzealous deletion of answers

limeI recently answered Realtime system monitior as floating bar with an admittedly too short answer. I received a couple of downvotes and some comments asking me to improve on the answer. So I did. Then I wrote a somewhat lengthy reply to the comments, and was planning to proceed to edit my answer ...

uh-oh

Quick question for you all.
One of our flags
> This question does not appear to be about Software Recommendations Stack Exchange or the software that powers the Stack Exchange network, within the scope defined in the help center.
Why does it contain this snippet "Stack Exchange or the software that powers the Stack Exchange network"?
Anyone know?
Oh wait that's just the Meta.
Nevermind. >.>
