I don't even know what that is. :-P I'm just sticking to reviewing (basic) data structure code, not writing it myself.

@Jamal It's a good idea. It's good practice to do that anyway.

Reviewing code and helping others is fun, but writing the code makes me nervous. But I do pride myself with not being completely wrong, while not even running the code I review (not that this code is even ready for running).

I'd say don't be nervous - the worst that happens is you're wrong, in which case you get valuable debugging practice

That's true. I'm also not used to downvotes, so that's another issue.

eh, it's all just internet points in the end. Learning is far more important :)

Which I am. :-) On second though, I have no idea why I said that I couldn't understand pollFront()'s implementation. I must've passed right over it, but it seems obvious now.

probably the function name...it's an odd name

He mentioned being a Java developer, so it must've come from there.

Q: Nullable<T> Implementation for VB6/VBA

lol.upvoteBecause I was spoiled with C# and the .NET framework, whenever I have to work with VB6 I feel like something's missing in the language. A little while ago I implemented a List<T> for VB6 (here), and before that I implemented String.Format() and a number of string-helper functions (here). Don't go...

12:55 AM
Very funny, StackExchange...

Funny, the link reads "nullablet-implementation..."

"Nutella T-bone implementation for V8"
YUM

...not sure about the V8 though...

Don't like processed vegetables in a can?

It's not that, ...it's ..too healthy to go with a T-bone spread with nutella (yuck!)
Yay! 5K!!

1:05 AM
That's true. I'd keep the Nutella for desert anyway. Having them together feels weird.

I think I might ask on SO about the last part in my Nullable<T> question, this is something a Hans Passant could probably answer. I really have no clue, I think I broke VB6 with that setter...

I've just found out that the OP of the C++ linked list question hasn't cast a single vote on SE, despite having sufficient rep.

Does he not know how to? Has he not taken the tour?
I mean, it's simple enough; you just click the up-arrow...

He knows how to accept answers, at least. I could at least mention it for his CR question. It may be rude to mention his other profiles.

for a moderator, yeah. but for a trusted user... is it?

I'm not sure, but it seems to not make a difference. However, lack of voting is none of a moderator's concern. It's voting irregularities that I should go after.

true

Either way, I shouldn't talk about users behind their backs on this site, even if it's all public. I don't want that to come back to bite me.

right. but I'm still leaving this guy a tiny little friendly comment.

Fair enough. That's really all we ask for in exchange with the time we've spent.

Q: Is it a good practice to put exceptions in every method?

pocI don't know is it a good idea to put exceptions in every method. I always put an exception when every new method is created, and I don't know if it is a good or bad practice. I thought it may be a bit of an annoyance when viewing the source code. Is it okay to put logging functions in the exce...

Welcome to StackExchange! Please note these sites run on an economy of votes - on larger sites it's not necessarily a problem because of the high volume, but on beta sites such as this one, voting is the cornerstone of our success. If you like this site, please vote; people take considerable amounts of time to answer questions here, and they do it only in the hope of earning some votes.. and ideally, a checkmark - voting and accepting answers cost nothing, and it's the best "thank you" you could ever express on a StackExchange site :) — lol.upvote 8 secs ago

@lol.upvote I seem to remember you saying this comment would be tiny. :P

isn't it?
it's all relative...

You're such a politician. ;-)

you have no idea ;)
wait 'till we have our own elections!

@lol.upvote - Just took a scan over your List<T> class. How far down the rabbit-hole do you want to go with vb6?

You're going to pass out those "I Voted" stickers? :-)

Hey @Comintern, welcome to the 2nd monitor! What do you mean exactly?

William MorrisonA user must query a large database for information repeatedly. This query may take up to ~7 seconds. This must be done asynchronously. Only one query will be running at a time. Well... my answer would depend mainly on how closely you want to stick to a "traditional" VB6 approach (which you've done nicely) and how willing you are to get into hacking territory.

oh.. wait does that mean you know a way of implementing generics in VB6?

Yes. It's a little involved though.

By all means, if you have spare time, I have votes to spend - post your answer and let the votes flow in!

3:28 AM
The link I posted on the data structure of Variants, mixed with some judicious (if imprudent) use of CopyMemory and AddressOf lets you do that.

..that's the kind of code that crashes with AccessViolationException-ish errors eh?

Not at all. You just have to keep an eye on memory allocation like in C.

And here I was, thinking BASIC stood for "Beginners' All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code"...

Ahh, that's fun stuff that. (Memory-management in C)

hiu
hi

3:31 AM
hoy!

Variants give you a lot of flexibility because they can be used essentially like a pointer in C. You use AddressOf to get the Variant struture and it exposes the underlying memory address that the runtime uses.

FsCK you MIcrosoft!

I used it back in the day to get a memory map to a file and then hack it into a SafeArray structure for shared memory space between applications.
@Portia - LOL! I wish fsck worked well with NTFS...

why ntfs?

I get asked to recover NTFS drives all the time and don't like the Windows tools.

3:38 AM
@Comintern if you post an answer along those lines on the List<T> question, something I can implement and use in production code, I'm throwing a bounty at you!

In the spirit Code Review, the "production code" is going to depend on how liberal your co-workers are.

@lol.upvote i want upvotes

@Portia create an account on CR first!

@Portia You have to post some questions or answers after you make an account.

^^ yeah, that too :)

3:40 AM
And please make sure they are on-topic. :)

@lol.upvote are you on AU?

@Comintern: Congrats on 500 rep! You can now vote to close and reopen. As it would happen, the upcoming question should be off-topic.

@Comintern ...or I might just keep it to myself if it's too way beyond (I'm pretty much the only dev touching and using that specific code though, but we're a very small team).

@lol.upvote - Take a look at the code here: vbforums.com/… and tell me if you think it is something you could reasonably put into production (obviously with some polishing).
LOL!

@Portia nope. some would call me a Microsoft Fanboy :)

oh shit yay!
@Comintern hmm that's more all about the Win32API than VB6, really.

Unfortunately I have no one to spend it with tomorrow. All I have is a math test...
(it's still the 13th where I live)

@Jamal singleness is bliss, at least every Feb.14th! (still the 13th here too, for another hour and 10 minutes)

I do save money this way... :-P

Yep, but you can leverage Variants and other COM data structures to use them like generics. For example, you can manually change the VB6 type definition of a SafeArray by altering the memory structure of the Variant.

@Jamal please complete this R_____ MO____
YOU CAN ADD ANYTHIGN BUT IT SHOULD HAVE A MEANING

@Comintern woah, you're not a programmer, you're a wizard!!
Stick around and your 500 rep will turn into 5K in no time!

Nah, I just figured out how to break VB6.
:-)

funny, at one point I tried to use AddressOf to try to reference (call) a method by its memory address... .... ..and failed miserably.

@Portia: Reviewing Moderator?

You have to use indirection. For example, I mentioned in-line assembly.

yeah, that's where I go swooooooosh ;)
actually, that's where I say "f*ck that, I'll just write it in C#"!

3:56 AM
:-) You just have to think outside the box a little -
You can use COM to execute arbitrary code pretty easily - grab the AddressOf a string's memory space and then call it like a function. Can't do that in C#.

@lol.upvote what the F*ck are you saying?

@Portia I'm saying in-line assembly is capable of frying my poor little brain.

@Jamal oh thanks

@Comintern not even in an unsafe block?

@Jamal someone is harrasing me in Root access chat. what to do?

OK, unsafe block is a different story I guess.

@Portia Flag the comment as offensive.

@syb0rg mods there are stupids

@Portia: Any mod can act on any chat flag. I can take a look at it myself, unless someone else sees it first.

The weekend challenge gives me an incredibly bad urge to golf my answer. :-)
Golfing in C# is like golfing in real life for me though - not equipped for the task at hand.

@Comintern That's kinda how I approach these challenges too. I make my code as short as possible. For example:

Q: Sudoku Solver in C

syb0rgI had this code lying around, so I figured I would submit this as my first attempt at a weekend-challenge. I would prefer if reviews contained suggestions on how to improve the algorithm, but all suggestions are acceptable. #include <stdio.h> int isAvailable(int puzzle[][9], int row, int col, ...

it shouldn't - one thing that's centric about CR, is that we're looking to get good, readable + maintainable code
yeah thanks @syb0rg :p

Well, I imagine golf code would have plenty of room for improvement.

@lol.upvote bye

@lol.upvote Hey, it works, and is readable. And it was the shortest solver posted to my knowledge.
:)

I know - I've been trying to figure out how to golf an output function for to 3L 5L jug question on Codegolf all day.

@red_eight right. but golfing is explicitly off-topic here.

A: Parsing annotation

rolflAdding a second answer to address the parsing and PHP side of things. PHP is not a language I am very familiar with, so you can hep with that (whoever you are). You have some inconsistencies in the parsing of the $value. You have two specific places where you expect contradictory values. First,...

probably for good reason

@rolfl I was trying to recruit a PHP guru earlier, it looks like I have so far failed...

I pointed out problems in his code, and proposed one solution... which he has poked holes in./
The holes he poked in my solution are probably not as big as the holes I poled in his... but, all you get from poking holes is leaks, so it's time to patch things.

4:30 AM

@red_eight - Jmal is your man.... for Mips and x86
@syb0rg they are a very contovertial group from South Africa that have taken a subset of the world by storm....
including a portion of the US market, and then they have hit it quite big throughout europe.

I think I'll start with x86 on Linux.
The intel manual is huge though. =(

woah that chick is scary!!

Yolandi is odd, but Ninja is just OTT
@red_eight - serious suggestion... pick up some pic microcontrollers.

@red_eight: Monkey is right. Although I'm not quite fluent in them, I can at least assess the structure and such. If it's basic enough, I can understand the algorithm.

That's how I learned.

4:37 AM
@red_eight Not NASM?

NASM works on Linux.
I think.

If you install it, yes.

I have used NASM, but on Windows. I'm not sure if they would be different. The makefile I use is pretty much the same.

I think I'll try to do something simple like a binary search or something.
As a first program.

If you want, I can link my GCD/LCM calculator for x86. It may give you an idea.

4:39 AM
PIC10F206 is my favourite.... 35 instructions, 14-bit instruction, 8-bit memory (all 0.75KB of it), and yet I built a camera remote control (Infra-red) with it.

@rolfl I'll have to look into PIC.
@Jamal Thanks for the link.

Really, StackExchange? Right at the same time? You could've waited...

4:40 AM
red_eight.... if you do, it opens up a whole new concept of hacking ....
and learning how to do the electronics side of things allows you to play in a different way... but, it's not like programming a PC in assembler.

@rolfl Probably a dumb question, but how do you use a micro-controller? I know very little about hard-ware.

It's not 'simple'. But, the small chips are all assembler-based, and the initial hardwar setup is 'not bad' (about $100 to get going and then it's like most things, you have to pay for your successes, and your mistakes.
You need to work with parts you can easily 'prototype' with... it takes a while to get it going.
I am only recommending it because, if you are interested in assembly, there is nothing like programming PIC's (and similar).

All right, I'm tired. Good night all!

And, if you get 'hooked' there's a lot you can learn, etc.

I'm looking at this site right now: microchip.com/wwwproducts/…

4:50 AM
'night robot!

Night @syb0rg

Consider two parts, the PIC10F322 -> http://www.microchip.com/wwwproducts/Devices.aspx?dDocName=en552977
and the 18F4553 http://www.microchip.com/wwwproducts/Devices.aspx?dDocName=en530214
I have used them both, very nice chips. The 4553 talks USB to your computer, etc.
The 10F is just so small, but, with some imagination, can do a huge amount.
The larger chips have more peripherals, which means it can do more things in hardware. It is not for everyone.... but, as I say, if you are interested, it could be very neat for you.

@jamal really? Need a better title :p

@lol.upvote: I'm as clueless as you all are. :-P
But I did remove the tag. :-)

I'm watching the videos on that site right now. When you click "Buy now" in the 4553, it goes to a bunch of different choice. What is the difference between all of them?

@red_eight - you also have a sampling option (are you in the US?) where they send you parts for free ... ;-)

Yeah, I'm in the US.

awards bounty to someone who can come up with a better title

The differences between them are often:
- temperature ranges (can they work inside a car's engine compartement)
- packaging - big parts for easy prototyping, compact for fitting on a small space on a custom board)

It would be awesome if Jon Skeet showed up again one day. I think he was a bit active on CR during its early days.

Eric Lippert came by the other day, left a comment.
(can't remember where though)
there
I agree; both of these make me twitchy. The solution I would recommend is: take a step back and ask yourself what you are really doing. You are writing a parser without writing a lexer first. I would be inclined to structure this code much more like a traditional compiler. Define a lexical grammer. Decompose the text into a sequence of tokens. Then run a parser over the tokens to produce a data structure. — Eric Lippert Jan 27 at 23:21
+127... am I rep-capping 2 days in a row??
anyway.. gotta sleep if I want to get up! see ya!

Wow, what a coincidence. I'm writing a parser without a lexer right now too.

@Comintern you know who this guy is?

Yeah. Wasn't he on the language development team for Javascript?
